Head Coach Doug Hill Doug Hill enters his seventh season as head coach at Air Force The Hill File in 2013. Hill, who spent 13 seasons as an assistant coach at Air Force before being promoted to head coach in June of 2007, took Hometown the Falcons to heights last season the program had not seen in Fleetwood, Pa. nearly 15 years. A 1983 graduate of the Academy, Hill guided his team to a Education spectacular run through the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation U.S. Air Force Academy Championships and AFA’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament B.S., Focus on Engineering, 1983 since 1997. Air Force finished the season with a 10-9-4 record, including three straight wins at the MPSF Championships for the Univ. of Northern Colorado school’s first conference championship in program history. For his M.A., Sports Administration, 1994 efforts, Hill was named the MPSF’s Coach of the Year for 2012. The Falcons, who lost to the Univeristy of Washington 1-0 in the Playing Experience first round of the NCAA Tournament, defeated nationally-ranked U.S. Air Force Academy New Mexico three times during the season (although a 5-3 shootout advantage in the MPSF 1979-82 championship game is technically considered a tie) and senior midfielder Kevin Durr was named the MVP of the MPSF Championships. Hill, who enters the 2013 campaign with Four-year letterwinner Team Captain, 1981-82 a 46-60-9 career record, also guided last year’s seniors to the most victories by a class (36) All-RMISL, 1981-82 since the class of ‘04 (37). In his six seasons at the helm, Hill has coached 25 Falcons to all-conference honors, All-Air Force Team including five last season, four of which were seniors. This season, Hill has just three start1985, 1987, 1999, 2000 ers and 11 letterwinners returning. Hill, who holds a United States Soccer Federation “A” license, was a four-year varsity Coaching Experience letterman at Air Force and played for his predecessor, Lou Sagastume. He was team captain Air Force, Head Coach both his junior and senior seasons. In all four years, Hill helped the Falcons win the Rocky 2007-present Mountain Intercollegiate Soccer League championship. After graduation, he remained at the Academy as the assistant soccer coach and a physical education instructor for one year. Air Force, Associate Head Coach Hill left the Academy in 1984 for Dyess AFB, Texas, where he was an instructor navi2006 gator in the C-130 aircraft. In addition, he assisted and filled in as the interim head soccer coach for the men’s and women’s soccer teams at Hardin-Simmons University (Texas) from Air Force, Assistant Coach 1983, 1992-97, 2001-2005 1986-1988. In 1988, he led the women’s team to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) championship game and finished second in the nation. He also played on All-Armed Forces Team, Head Coach the all-Air Force soccer team in 1985 and 1987 and coached the 1986 team. 1999-2000 After eight years away from the Academy, Hill returned as an assistant coach in 1992 and helped guide the Falcons to consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament in `92 and `93. All-Air Force Team, Player-Coach In 1993, the Falcons advanced to the Final Eight after beating undefeated and No. 1-ranked 1999-2000 Creighton, 2-1, in four overtimes on the road in the first round. The 1996 team advanced to the WAC championships after going 14-3-3 during the regular season, while the 1997 squad Hardin-Simmons, Head Coach (M&W) earned a trip to the NCAA Tourney. 1988 Hill moved on to McChord AFB, Wash., in 1997, holding positions of Director, Wing Weapons and Tactics for the 62nd Airlift Wing and Operations Officer for the 4th Airlift Hardin-Simmons, Assistant Coach (M&W) Squadron, a C-141 unit. He guided the all-Air Force soccer team as a player-coach in 1999 1986-87 and 2000, winning the Armed Forces championship both years. He also coached the allUSSF “A” License Armed Services team in 1999 and 2000. 1994 In 2001, Hill returned to the sidelines at his alma mater. He was an assistant coach from 2001-05 before earning a promotion to associate head coach for the 2006 campaign. During that tenure at AFA, the Falcons were ranked as high as 19th in the country during the 2001 campaign and he helped Marcus Sagastume earn MPSF Co-Player of the Year honors in `03. Hill, who has over 2,800 flying hours to his credit, holds a master’s degree in sports administration from the University of Northern Colorado and retired from the Air Force in April of 2006 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. A native of Fleetwood, Pa., Hill, 53, lives in Colorado Springs with his wife, Kathy, and their two sons, Luke (14) and Greg (12).

Coaching Staff Chris Foster Assistant Coach Eighth Season Chris Foster enters his eighth season as a member of the coaching staff and fourth as a full-time assistant coach. Foster, who recently retired from the Air Force, is a 1989 graduate of the Academy with a degree in engineering mechanics. He also earned an MBA and a master of military operational arts and science; was a distinguished graduate of both Squadron Officers School and the Air Command and Staff College; and is a graduate of Air War College. A four-year starter for Air Force, Foster is No. 2 on AFA’s career scoring list (139 points), No. 2 all time in goals (54) and the program’s career assists leader (31). He was a four-time all-conference selection, three-time all-region selection, earned All-America honors in 1988, and represented the West in the College Senior Bowl. At graduation, he was the first soccer player to receive the USAFA Male Athlete of the Year award. He was a member of the 1989 University Games Team, played on the U.S. National “B” Team (1988-90) and represented the United States on the Senior Division National Team. Following graduation, Foster was stationed at the Academy as an instructor and assistant soccer coach and played professionally for the Colorado Foxes in the APSL’s inaugural season. He attended undergraduate pilot training at Williams AFB, Ariz., where he was awarded the Daedalian Trophy for flying excellence, and was stationed at Holloman AFB, N.M., where he played for the New Mexico Chiles in the USISL. Foster has been stationed at Bitburg and Spangdahlem AB, Germany; Tyndall and Eglin AFB, Fla.; RAF Valley, Wales; Langley AFB, Va., and NAS Keflavik, Iceland. He is a command pilot with over 1,500 hours in the F-15C, including over 250 combat hours. Prior to his retirement, he was the 306 FTG Liaison to the Academy and an instructor pilot at the Academy airfield. Foster is the father of two children, Christopher (17) and Kylie (10).

Before joining the Creighton staff, Doyle spent time at Penn State as a top assistant from 1999-2000. He helped guide the Nittany Lions to a 13-6-2 mark and a second-place finish in the Big Ten Tournament in 2000. That year, Penn State also advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals. He also was an assistant coach at William & Mary (1997-1998) and Mercer (1995-1996). Doyle received his NSCAA Advanced Diploma in June 1998 and also holds a USSF “A” license. He has been a part of the USSF Youth National Team Program and has coached at the state and regional level of the Olympic Development Program. As a college player at Creighton, Doyle started three years in net for the Blue Jays before his career was cut short by a knee injury. In 1992, he was named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year and also garnered first-team AllMVC and All-Midwest honors. He led the 1992 Blue Jays to a 16-2-1 mark and a No. 1 national ranking as a junior. He ranks among the school leaders in 12 categories. Originally from Katy, Texas, Doyle earned his bachelor’s degree in interpersonal communications from Bowling Green State University in 1996. Doyle and his wife, Katie, have two children, Lucy (4) and Liam (2).

Lt. Col. Marcus Corbett Assistant Coach First Season Lt. Col. Marcus Corbett enters his first season as a member of the coaching staff in 2013 after having spent the last six years as head men’s soccer coach at the Air Force Academy Prep School. Corbett graduated from the Air Force Academy with a degree in legal studies in 1998 and is currently pursuing his masters of sports science in coaching from the United States Sports Academy. He is a squadron commander in the Air Force Reserves with the 310th Space Wing at Schriever AFB, Colo. Corbett holds the NSCAA Premier Diploma and USSF ‘B’ Coaching License. He and his wife, Shanna, have 3 children, Donovan (7), John Michael (5), and Skylar (4).

Kevin Doyle Assistant Coach Second Season Kevin Doyle enters his second season with the Falcons in 2013. Doyle joined the Academy staff after spending three years as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech. Prior to coaching at Virginia Tech, Doyle was the top assistant at Creighton University from 2001-2006, overseeing the recruiting process along with training goalkeepers and the team defense. The Creighton goalkeeping corps and defense ranked in the national top-25 in goals against average in two of his final three years with the program. During his stint with the Blue Jays, the team made the NCAA tournament each year, including three quarterfinals and a place in the 2002 College Cup.

Support Staff Col. Gary Packard Officer Representative Col. Gary A. Packard, Jr., Ph.D., has been an officer representative and the eligibility chair for the men’s soccer team since the 2006 season. He is a 1982 graduate of the Air Force Academy and is currently the Permanent Professor and Head of the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership. Following graduation from the Academy, Packard attended pilot training and was a T-37 instructor pilot at Vance AFB, OK. He then flew KC-10s at Seymour Johnson AFB, NC before attending graduate school at Michigan State, where he received a master’s degree in counseling. He was then assigned as an instructor and counselor at the Academy before returning to school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning his Ph.D. in developmental psychology. Prior to returning to the Academy in 2003, Packard was a T-1 instructor pilot and commander of the 32nd Flying Training Squadron back at Vance AFB, OK. He has over 3,900 flying hours in T-37, T-38, T-1, TG-7A, and KC-10 aircraft. Packard is the proud father of four children (Mark, David, Jacob and Grace) and one granddaughter, Magnolia.

Lt. Col. Shawn McKelvy Officer Representative Lt. Col. Shawn D. McKelvy is in his fifth year as an officer representative for the men’s soccer team. He is an associate professor assigned to the department of law. McKelvy is entering his sixth year teaching at USAFA having previously been assigned to USAFA from 2005-09. McKelvy attended Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, as a presidential scholar and was a Scholar-Athlete All-American and a four-year varsity letterman in men’s soccer. He graduated in May of 1996 with a degree in business administration and then attended law

school at Washburn University School of Law, where he earned a Juris Doctor with Dean’s Honors in 1999. Since entering active duty in October of 1999 as a Judge Advocate, he has served at various levels of command; most recently he was assigned to the Office of the Secretary of Defense as the deputy director of legal policy. Last summer, he returned to USAFA as a senior military faculty member in the department of law. McKelvy and his wife, Anne, are the proud parents of three children, Brendan (16), Riley (14) and Kiernan (11). He is an avid outdoorsman, enjoying camping, hiking, running, and skiing, and is a huge Denver Broncos fan.

Lt. Col. David Walick Officer Representative Lt. Col. Dave Walick is in his second year as an officer representative for the men’s soccer team. Walick, who graduated from the Academy in 1993 with a bachelor of science degree in political science and humanities, is currently the sole USAFA psychiatrist and the chief of the Mental Health Clinic at USAFA. Following his graduation, Walick was assigned to graduate school in philosophy/ethics at Arizona State University, before spending two years in the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) then 18 months as an instructor in the USAFA department of philosophy and fine arts. In 1998, he began medical school at Tulane University School of Medicine and completed his residency in general psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. A four-year starter on the men’s soccer team at the Academy, Walick was an NCAA All-American in 1992 following a 45-point season that helped the men’s team reach the NCAA tournament. His 45 points during his senior season in 1992 is No. 3 on AFA’s single-season chart. He was a first-team all-Far West Region selection in 1992, was named to the allMountain Pacific Sports Federation team and was the team MVP in ‘92 as well.

Walick and his wife, Krissi, an Army orthopedic surgeon and West Point graduate, have two daughters, Adi (7) and Sage (4).

Lt. Col. Martin Gaupp Officer Representative Lt. Col. Marty Gaupp is in his first year as an officer representative for the men’s soccer team. He is an assistant professor assigned to the department of mathematical sciences where he heads the statistics and operations research divisions. Gaupp is entering his sixth year teaching at USAFA having previously been assigned to the Academy from 20022005. Gaupp is a 1994 graduate from USAFA where he majored in economics and operations research. He graduated from St. Martins College in 1997 with an MBA and went on to the Air Force Institute of Technology where he graduated with an MS in operations research in 1999. In 2005, he completed a PhD in mineral economics from the Colorado School of Mines. Since entering active duty in 1994, he has served as a contracting officer and scientific analyst at various levels of command from the Wing to the Pentagon. Most recently he served as the chief scientist for Air Education and Training Command in San Antonio, Texas, where he deployed to Kabul, Afghanistan as a campaign analyst. Gaupp and his wife, Britta, have two daughters, Amanda (9) and Keira (5). He enjoys running, ice hockey, and chasing his kids in all their endeavors.

2013 Season Preview New Players, New League, Same Expectations. Those are the facts facing Air Force men’s soccer coach Doug Hill for the 2013 season. Coming off the team’s first-ever conference tournament championship and first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 15 years, the Falcons will try to produce a similar season despite the loss of 10 seniors, including eight starters. The Falcons had a very productive spring season and Hill is looking for players to carry that load this fall.

Klazura, meanwhile, had three goals and one assist for seven points last season. He scored a golden goal 12 minutes into overtime to lead AFA past CSU Bakersfield 2-1 in the MPSF semifinals, setting up the championship game against New Mexico at the Lobos’ home field, which the Falcons then captured the title by defeating UNM in penalty kicks. Klazura also notched the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over Villanova to clinch the Penn Soccer Classic title for Air Force.

“It is always difficult to replace 10 seniors and eight starters’ game experience in one year, but many players will have the opportunity to step up to the challenge,” said Hill. “Of course we are rebuilding a bit this year, but we look to surprise a lot of teams this season. The silver lining is that we are hosting the conference championships this year and look forward to playing that in our home stadium.”

Fellow seniors Michael Thrasher and Mitch Kim return as well after appearing in 11 and 10 games, respectively, last season.

Leading the way in 2013 are senior captains Caleb Downey and Brian Klazura. Downey, a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honorable mention selection last season, scored three goals, including two game-winners against nationally-ranked New Mexico. He scored the game’s only goal less than four minutes into overtime as Air Force upset the fifth-ranked Lobos in Albuquerque, then notched the game-winner in a 2-1 victory over eighthranked UNM just one week later at Cadet Soccer Stadium.

Junior Scott McGillivray tied Klazura for the scoring lead among underclassmen last season with seven points on two goals and three assists. He fired 22 shots, with seven on goal, in 2012. Fellow juniors Matt Payne (one goal), Alex Frazier (one assist) and Luke Welch (four games, zero points) are expected to challenge for starting spots this season, as is Zachary Modly, who did not play last season after notching six points as a freshman in 2011. Four returning sophomores appeared in varsity games last season. Jacob LaPorte (nine games), Joey Haug (four), Ben Kern (three) and Connor Dunbaker (two) will look for expended playing time in 2013. The team’s leading freshman scorer last season, Abinadi Samayoa (two goals), is taking the 2013-14 academic year off for a mission and expected to return for the 2014 campaign. The incoming class consists of 13 players that make up another strong recruiting class. The class includes eight Development Academy players with two coming from the USAFA Prep School. Members of the Class of 2017 come from 10 different states. “Our new recruits will be looked at to step in right away and make contributions,” said Hill. “My staff did an outstanding job bringing in a strong quality class this year that will add strength and needed depth to our team. It was tough for any freshmen to break in the starting lineup last year with a heavy weighted senior class, but this year there are some opportunities for these players to compete with only four seniors.” The class is highlighted by the two prep schoolers, Blake Elder (Fort Worth, TX) and Ryan Ward (Frisco, TX), as well as direct entries Jake Schenk (Flemington, NJ), Kenton McGuire (Vancouver, WA), Cameron Duley (Roswell, GA), A.J. Esparza (Chandler, AZ) and Tucker Axhoj (Waxhaw, PA).

Senior defender Caleb Downey Federation, will open the regular season on Friday, August 30 at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif. After playing at the University of San Francisco on Sunday, Sept. 1, Air Force hosts service-academy rival Army in the first home game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Cadet Soccer Stadium. “Our non-conference schedule is one of the toughest we have had with high RPI teams like St. Mary’s, USF, Oregon State, Portland, Bradley, Cal Poly and San Diego State,” said Hill, who enters his seventh season as head coach. “It should prepare us well for our conference play. Our players need to gain experience quickly so we are putting them right into the fire starting with two tough exhibition games with Denver University (Aug. 18 in Vail, Colo.) and New Mexico (Aug. 22 at the Academy).“ The eight-team Western Athletic Conference will split into two four-team divisions for the 2013 campaign. Air Force is with Grand Canyon, Houston Baptist and UMKC and will play each of those schools in a homeand-home series. The Falcons will play the four schools in the other division, San Jose State, UNLV, Seattle University and CSU Bakersfield, just one time for a total of 10 conference games. The WAC Tournament will begin on Thurs., Nov. 14, with the semifinals scheduled for Friday, Nov. 15 and the title game set for Sunday, Nov. 17. The entire tournament will be played at the Academy.

Back to the WAC After spending the last 14 years playing in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the Falcons will begin play, once again, in the Western Athletic Conference in 2013. Air Force was a member of the WAC from 1996-98 before breaking off with seven other schools to form the Mountain West Conference. The MWC did not offer men’s soccer, however, so the Falcons moved to the MPSF. The Falcons left the MPSF with a bang, winning their first-ever conference tournament title last season, defeating nationally-ranked New Mexico in a title-game shootout to earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The WAC is the sixth oldest among the nation’s 11 Division I-A conferences. Its history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the original six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition. The first championship was held in November 1962, when Arizona won the men’s cross country title and New Mexico followed with the first WAC football title. Arizona finished second in the NCAA College World Series and, less than three years later, Arizona State claimed the league’s first NCAA title when the Sun Devils won the College World Series trophy. Fresno State was the last WAC school to earn an NCAA team title when it won the College World Series in 2008. Since 1962, several changes have occurred. UTEP and Colorado State became members in September 1967, while Arizona and Arizona State withdrew on June 30, 1978. The WAC then added San Diego State (1978), Hawai‘i (1979) and Air Force (1980). Before 1990, the WAC sponsored championships only in men’s sports. However, a merger with the High Country Athletic Conference formed a single conference under one administrative structure, and the 1990-91 athletic year was the first in which both men and women competed under the WAC name. Fresno State was added in 1992, and then in 1996, the women’s programs from Air Force and Hawai‘i along with six new schools (UNLV, Rice, San Jose State, SMU, TCU and Tulsa) came into the WAC. Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming withdrew on June 30, 1999. Nevada (2000), Boise State (2001) and Louisiana Tech (2001) were added while TCU withdrew following the 2000-01 season. In 2005, Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State joined the WAC after Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa withdrew. Boise State withdrew prior to the 2011-12 season. In 2012, the WAC added Denver, Seattle U, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State. The current membership began on July 1, 2013 when the WAC added CSU Bakersfield, Chicago State, Grand Canyon, UMKC, UTPA and Utah Valley to join Idaho, New Mexico State and Seattle U. The new institutions replace withdrawing members, Denver, Louisiana Tech, San Jose State, Utah State, UT Arlington, UTSA and Texas State. Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports – nine men’s and 10 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball. In 2013-14, the WAC will create a new digital network to give fans streaming internet access to many of its regular season games and postseason championships including volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, basketball, softball and baseball.

The USAFA The United States Air Force Academy offers a four-year program of instruction and experience designed to educate, train and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation. Each cadet graduates with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

Course of Study Cadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that provides the knowledge, skills and responsibilities essential to a career Air Force officer. The entire USAFA experience is integrated and mapped to achieve a set of desired outcomes in every graduate. The core academic curriculum includes courses in basic sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities. Cadets take additional elective courses to complete requirements for one of 32 major areas of study. About 50 percent of the cadets complete majors in science and engineering; the remainder graduate in the social sciences and humanities. Some of the most popular majors include management, aeronautical engineering, foreign area studies, history, behavioral science, civil engineering, astronautical engineering, electrical engineering and engineering mechanics.

Faculty Composition The majority of the Academy’s faculty members, more than 500 total, are Air Force officers. They are selected primarily from career-officer volunteers who have established outstanding records of performance and dedication. Each has at least a master’s degree and more than 55 percent have doctorates or other terminal degrees in their field of study. About 30 percent of the faculty are civilians who bring great depth of disciplinary and educational expertise and provide academic stability and continuity. Faculty members are intensely focused on cadet learning as an integral part of their officer development. The Air Force Academy has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for the most accessible and involved faculty for four years in a row. To provide greater contributions by a diverse faculty, the Academy has several distinguished visiting professors and endowed professors who serve one or more years. Officers from other services, as well as officers from allied countries are also members of the faculty. Distinguished civilian and military lecturers also share their expertise with the cadets during the academic year.

Athletic Program The Academy’s athletic program is designed to improve physical fitness, teach athletic skills and develop leadership qualities. To achieve its goals, the Academy offers some of the most extensive physical education, intramural sports and intercollegiate athletic programs in the nation. Cadets take at least three different physical education courses each year.

Military Education and Training An air, space and cyberspace-oriented military education, training and leadership program begins with basic cadet training and continues throughout the four years. Seniors are responsible for the organizational leadership of the cadet wing, while juniors and sophomores seek to develop team and interpersonal leadership and instructional skills. Cadets are projected into as many active leadership roles as possible to prepare them to be effective Air Force officers. Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor, Air Force heritage and physical training -- are emphasized the first summer during basic cadet training. Freshmen then study the military role in United States society as well as the mission and organization of the Air Force. Sophomores receive instruction in communication skills and juniors study the combat and operational aspects of the Air Force. The Academy offers courses in flying, navigation, soaring and parachuting, building from basic skills to instructor duties. Some cadets may fly light aircraft with the Cadet Flying Team. Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-week training periods. There are a variety of programs available and each cadet is required to complete two training periods each summer with leave during the other period. All new cadets take six weeks of basic cadet training in their first summer. Combat survival training is a required threeweek program during cadets’ second summer. For other second-summer training periods, cadets have options such as working with Airmen in an operational unit at an Air Force installation, airborne parachute training, soaring or basic free-fall parachute training. During their last two summers, all cadets are offered leadership training as supervisors or instructors in the summer programs listed above. Extracurricular activities also are an integral part of the education program. The cadet ski club, drum and bugle corps, cadet chorale and forensics are a few of the programs available.

HISTORY OF THE ACADEMY In 1948, a board of leading civilian and military educators was appointed to plan the curriculum for an academy that would meet the needs of the newly established Air Force. The board determined that Air Force requirements could not be met by expanding the other service academies and recommended an Air Force Academy be established without delay. In 1949, then Secretary of the Air Force W. Stuart Symington appointed a commission to assist in selecting a site and on April 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized creation of the United States Air Force Academy. After considering 580 sites in 45 states, the commission narrowed the choice to three locations. The summer of 1954, Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott selected a site near Colorado Springs, Colo. Colorado contributed $1 million toward purchase of the property. In July 1955, the first Academy class entered interim facilities at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, while construction began. It was sufficiently completed for occupancy by the cadet wing in late August 1958. Initial construction cost was $142 million. Women entered the Academy on June 28, 1976, as members of the class of 1980.

USAFA Senior Leadership Lt. Gen. Michelle D. Johnson is Superintendent, U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. She directs a fouryear academic, military training, athletic and character development program leading to a bachelor’s degree and commission as an Air Force officer. The general is a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Class of 1981. After graduating from the Academy, she completed graduate studies as a Rhodes Scholar before earning her pilot wings in 1984. Johnson has held numerous command positions at the group, wing and numbered Air Force level, and came to the Academy after serving as the Deputy, Chief of Staff, Operation and Intelligence, Supreme Headquarters Allies Powers Europe, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Casteau, Belgium. She has served in various assignments in air mobility, airlift and tanker flying operations and training, academic instruction and personnel. A command pilot, the general has more than 3,600 flying hours in the C-141, T-41, KC-10, C-17, C-5 and the KC-14 aircraft. The general’s military awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Aerial Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Combat Readiness Medal with oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal with bronze star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with bronze star and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Director of Athletics Dr. Hans J. Mueh athletic department made the transition to a federally-chartered non-profit organization in the summer of 2013, which will lead to more fund-raising opportunities. Mueh was instrumental in the USAFA Endowment and the announcement of the Holaday Athletic Center, an indoor training facility. The $15 million facility was completed in July 2011.

Dr. Hans J. Mueh is in his 10th year as the director of athletics at the Air Force Academy. A retired Air Force brigadier general, Mueh was vice dean of faculty for two years prior to his retirement from active duty in the summer of 2004. Mueh was heavily involved in Academy athletics before becoming director of athletics. He was the Academy’s faculty athletics representative from 1996-2004 and was a long-time member of the board of directors for the Air Force Academy Athletics Association. Since becoming the director of athletics, Mueh has led the Academy to some remarkable feats. In 2007, the Academy was one of only three schools (Michigan State and Boston College) to reach post-season play in football (2007), men’s basketball and ice hockey (200607). It marked the first time a service academy has ever had a team compete in the post-season in all three sports. In addition, under Mueh’s watch the men’s basketball team has played in another NCAA tournament and the National Invitational Tournament’s Final Four. The ice hockey team has won the conference championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament five of the last six years. Mueh was on the selection committee that hired current head coach Frank Serratore and led the Academy’s move into the Atlantic Hockey Association. The football program, the Academy’s flagship sport, has gone through a major overhaul under Mueh. He led the transition from the retirement of the legendary Fisher DeBerry after 23 years at the helm to hiring current head coach Troy Calhoun, a 1989 Academy graduate. Calhoun’s impact was immediate, leading the Falcons to a 9-4 overall mark and a secondplace finish in the Mountain West Conference in 2007. The Falcons qualified for their first bowl game in seven years, playing in the Armed Forces Bowl in 2007. The program has gone to a school-record six consecutive bowl games and averaged over 9,000 bowl tickets sold.

Mueh has also been active within the conference and the NCAA. He was recently selected to be part of the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabinet and has been active on the NCAA’s academics/eligibility compliance cabinet, the men’s golf committee and the region 7 postgraduate scholarship committee. Mueh has been equally active within the conference on various leadership committees. He is currently on the awards and recognition committee and has previously served on the joint council executive committee, and committees on championships, television and sportsmanship. Before assuming his duties as vice dean at the Academy, Mueh was permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry at the Academy, a position he held since October 1987 where he oversaw the annual design and instruction of 25 undergraduate courses for 1,500 cadets annually. Mueh was born Jan. 8, 1944, in Celle, Germany, and emigrated to the United States in 1951. He entered the Air Force in 1962 as a member of the Academy’s eighth graduating class, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1966. While at the Academy, Mueh was a two-year letterwinner in soccer as a goalie. He still holds the Academy record for saves in a game with 30, accomplishing it twice in 1965 against North Carolina and Benedictine. In his junior and senior years, Mueh helped the Falcons to the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Soccer League championship and quarterfinal berths in the NCAA tournament. He was a first-team all-league selection in 1965.

Following graduation, Mueh completed two assignments in intelligence before attending the University of Wisconsin where he earned his master’s degree in chemistry in 1970. He later earned a doctorate degree in chemistry from Wisconsin in 1976 as a distinguished graduate. He has also completed Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and Air War College. Between earning the two degrees, Mueh returned to the Academy as an instructor in the department of chemistry from 1970-72. He also served as assistant soccer coach and played semi-pro soccer with the Aurora Internationals in Denver during those two years, leading the Internationals to the Colorado state title in 1971. He volunteered for duty in Vietnam and served as an intelligence officer in Saigon, Republic of Vietnam and at Nakhon Phanom RTAB, Thailand, in 1972 and 1973. After earning his doctorate degree, Mueh returned to the Academy in 1976 as an associate professor of chemistry. He remained at the Academy except for a stint in 1985-86 as the special assistant for technical matters at the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon. In 1986, he assumed the position of acting head, department of chemistry, before being selected for his position of permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry in 1987. As faculty athletics representative, he was active in both the Western Athletic Conference and Mountain West Conference, and was the Academy’s representative on the transition team to form the new MWC, the only faculty athletics representative on the team. He competes in golf, racquetball, handball and tennis, and has promoted Air Force Academy intercollegiate sports throughout his tenure, beginning with work as chairman of the hockey eligibility committee, officer representative to the men’s golf team and five years as the officer representative to the football team. Mueh is married to the former Sally Flax of Cincinnati, Ohio. They have three children: Kristine, Kurt and Deborah.

Director of Athletics Dr. Hans Mueh is in his 10th season as the Director of Athletics. In 2006-07, Air Force was one of just three Division I schools to reach post-season play in football, men’s basketball and ice hockey and the first service academy to accomplish the remarkable feat.

Mueh has been just as successful behind the scenes with the administration of the department. Mueh restructured the department with an internal/external model that has streamlined resources and made the department more effective from top to bottom. In addition, the

USAFA Athletics Few schools in the country have an athletic program as extensive as the Air Force Academy’s. The goals of the athletic program are to enhance the physical conditioning of all cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for officership, to teach leadership in a competitive environment and to build character. There are three subdivisions of the athletic program: intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and physical education. The intercollegiate program has 17 men’s and 10 women’s NCAA-sanctioned teams, facing some of the top competition in the nation. Men’s teams are football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross-country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. The Academy fields women’s teams in basketball, cross-country, fencing, gymnastics, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis and volleyball. In addition, the Academy sponsors two non-NCAA programs; boxing and cheerleading. The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs compete at the NCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons compete in this conference against teams from Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawai’i (football only), Nevada, New Mexico, San Diego State, UNLV and Wyoming. All sports also compete against non-conference opponents, including many nationallyranked teams. The football team competes annually for the Commander-inChief’s Trophy, which is emblematic of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons have won the trophy 18 times, which is more than any other academy. The winner of the annual rivalry visits the White House to have the trophy presented by the President of the United States. The USAFA Cadet Field House is one of the most impressive buildings in the country. It’s a modern, versatile structure with seemingly endless uses. The $5.6 million building is five stories high and 396 feet by 426 feet, the size of three football fields laid side by side. The structure is divided into three areas--basketball arena, ice hockey arena and multipurpose area. The three sections have a combined seating capacity of more than 9,000. Clune Arena seats 5,858. The Cadet Ice Rink has a seating capacity of 2,470, while the multipurpose area seats 1,000 fans for track and field competitions. The department’s newest facility, the Holaday Athletic Center (below), was completed in July 2011.
