Lt Gen Michael Gould took command of the U.S. Air Force Academy, as the 18th superintendent.

Lt Gen Michael C. Gould is Superintendent, U.S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo. He directs a four-year academic, military training, athletic and character development program leading to a bachelor’s degree and commission as an Air Force officer. The general is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy’s Class of 1976. His career encompasses a wide range of assignments, ranging from head football coach of the Air Force Academy Preparatory School, to serving as Air Force aide to the President of the United States. He has held numerous command positions at the group, wing and numbered air force level, and was commander of Cheyenne Mountain Operations Center during 9/11. Prior to his return to the Academy, he was Director of Operations and Plans, U.S. Transportation Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill. General Gould is a command pilot with more than 3,000 flying hours in the T-38, T-41, KC-10, C-5, C-17, C-21, C-141 and KC-135R. The general’s military awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Defense Superior Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

HISTORY OF THE ACADEMY In 1948, a board of leading civilian and military educators was appointed to plan the curriculum for an academy that would meet the needs of the newly established Air Force. The board determined that Air Force requirements could not be met by expanding the other service academies and recommended an Air Force academy be established without delay. In 1949, then Secretary of the Air Force W. Stuart Symington appointed a commission to assist in selecting a site and on April 1, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower authorized creation of the United States Air Force Academy. After considering 580 sites in 45 states, the commission narrowed the choice to three locations. In the summer of 1954, Secretary of the Air Force Harold Talbott selected a site near Colorado Springs, Colo. Colorado contributed $1 million toward purchase of the property. In July 1955, the first academy class entered interim facilities at Lowry Air Force Base, Denver, while construction began. It was sufficiently completed for occupancy by the cadet wing in late August 1958. Initial construction cost was $142 million. Women entered the academy on June 28, 1976, as members of the class of 1980.

THE ACADEMY/G GEN NER RAL FACTS S The United States Air Force Academy offers a four-year program of instruction and experience designed to educate, train and inspire men and women to become officers of character, motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation. Each cadet graduates with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the Air Force.

Course of Study Cadets are exposed to a balanced curriculum that provides the knowledge, skills and responsibilities essential to a career Air Force officer. The entire USAFA experience is integrated and mapped to achieve a set of desired outcomes in every graduate. The core academic curriculum includes courses in basic sciences, engineering, social sciences and humanities. Cadets take additional elective courses to complete requirements for one of 32 major areas of study. Over 50 percent of the cadets complete majors in science and engineering; the remainder graduate in the social sciences and humanities. Some of the most popular majors include management, aeronautical engineering, foreign studies, history, behavioral science, civil engineering, astronautical engineering, electrical engineering and engineering mechanics. Academic majors include: Aeronautical Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Behavioral Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Electrical Engineering, and Engineering Mechanics, English, Environmental Engineering, Foreign Area Studies, Geography, History, Legal Studies, Management, Mathematical Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Meteorology, Military Strategic Studies, Physics, Political Science, Basic Sciences, General Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences, Operations Research, Space Operations, Systems Engineering and Systems Engineering Management.

Faculty Composition The majority of the Academy’s faculty members, more than 500 total, are Air Force officers. They are selected primarily from career-officer volunteers who have established outstanding records of performance

and dedication. Each has at least a master’s degree and more than 55 percent have doctorates or other terminal degrees in their field of study. Faculty members are intensely focused on cadets’ learning as an integral part of their officer development. The Air Force Academy has been ranked No. 1 in the nation for the most accessible and involved faculty for four years in a row. To provide greater contributions by a diverse faculty, the Academy has several distinguished visiting professors and associate professors who serve one or more years. Officers from other services are members of the faculty and a small number of officers from allied countries teach as well. Distinguished civilian and military lecturers also share their expertise with the cadets during the academic year.

Athletic Program The Academy’s athletic program is designed to improve physical fitness, teach athletic skills and develop leadership qualities. To achieve its goals, the Academy offers some of the most extensive physical education, intramural sports and intercollegiate athletic programs in the nation. Cadets take at least three different physical education courses each year.

mission and organization of the Air Force. Sophomores receive instruction in communicative skills and juniors study the combat and operational aspects of the Air Force. Military studies for the senior class focus on military thought. The Academy offers courses in flying, navigation, soaring and parachuting, building from basic skills to instructor duties. Cadets may fly light aircraft with the Cadet Flying Team. Summer training for cadets is divided into three, three-week training periods. There are a variety of programs available and each cadet is required to complete two training periods each summer with leave during the other period. All new cadets take six weeks of basic cadet training in their first summer. Combat survival training is a required three-week program during cadets’ second summer. For other second-summer training periods, cadets have options such as working with young airmen in an operational unit at an Air Force installation, airborne parachute training, soaring or basic free-fall parachute training. During their last two summers, all cadets are offered leadership training as supervisors or instructors in summer programs, such as basic cadet training, survival training, freefall parachuting and soaring.

Military Education and Training An air, space and cyberspace-oriented military education, training and leadership program begins with basic cadet training and continues throughout the four years. Seniors are responsible for the organizational leadership of the cadet wing, while juniors and sophomores seek to develop team and interpersonal leadership and instructional tasks. Cadets are projected into as many active leadership roles as possible to prepare them to be effective Air Force officers. Fundamental concepts of military organization -- drill, ethics, honor, Air Force heritage and physical training -- are emphasized the first summer during basic cadet training. Freshmen then study the military role in United States society as well as the

Mueh was on the selection committee that hired current head coach Frank Serratore and led the Academy’s move into the Athletic Hockey Association. The women’s basketball program has shown steady improvement and last year won an Academy Division I record 10 games.

Dr. Hans J. Mueh is in his sixth year as the director of athletics at the Air Force Academy. A retired Air Force brigadier general, Mueh was vice dean of faculty for two years prior to his retirement from active duty in the summer of 2004. Mueh was heavily involved in Academy athletics before becoming director of athletics. He was the Academy’s faculty athletics representative from 1996-2004 and was a long-time member of the board of directors for the Air Force Academy Athletics Association. Since becoming the director of athletics, Mueh has led the Academy to some remarkable feats. In 2006-07, the Academy was one of only three schools (Michigan State and Boston College) to reach post-season play in football, men’s basketball and ice hockey. It marked the first time a service academy has ever had a team compete in the post-season in all three sports. In addition, under Mueh’s watch the men’s basketball team has played in an NCAA tournament and the National Invitational Tournament’s Final Four. Mueh hired current head coach Jeff Reynolds and helped him continue Air Force’s winning tradition last season. The ice hockey team has won back-to-back conference

The football program, the Academy’s flagship sport, went through a major overhaul. Mueh led the transition from the retirement of the legendary Fisher DeBerry after 23 years at the helm to hiring current head coach Troy Calhoun, a 1989 Academy graduate. Calhoun’s impact was immediate, leading the Falcons to a 9-4 overall mark and a second-place finish in the Mountain West Conference in 2007. The Falcons qualified for their first bowl game in five years, playing in the Armed Forces Bowl last year. Mueh has been just as successful behind the scenes with the administration of the department. Mueh restructured the department with an internal/ external model that has streamlined resources and made the department more effective from top to bottom. In addition, he has the department on course to become a federally chartered non-profit organization which will lead to more fund-raising opportunities. Mueh has also been active within the conference and the NCAA. He was recently selected to be part of the NCAA Division I Amateurism Cabinet and has been active on the NCAA’s academics/eligibility compliance cabinet, the men’s golf committee and the region 7 postgraduate scholarship committee. Mueh has been equally active within the conference on various leadership committees.

He is currently on the awards and recognition committee and has previously served on the joint council executive committee, and committees on championships, television and sportsmanship. Before assuming his duties as vice dean at the Academy, Mueh was permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry at the Academy, a position he held since October 1987 where he oversaw the annual design and instruction of 25 undergraduate courses for 1,500 cadets annually. Mueh was born Jan. 8, 1944, in Celle, Germany, and emigrated to the United States in 1951. He entered the Air Force in 1962 as a member of the Academy’s eighth graduating class, and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry in 1966. While at the Academy, Mueh was a two-year letterwinner in soccer as a goalie. He still holds the Academy record for saves in a game with 30, accomplishing it twice in 1965 against North Carolina and Benedictine. In his junior and senior years, Mueh helped the Falcons to the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Soccer League championship and quarterfinal berths in the NCAA tournament. Following graduation, Mueh completed two assignments in intelligence before attending the University of Wisconsin where he earned his master’s degree in chemistry in 1970. He later earned a doctorate degree in chemistry from Wisconsin in 1976 as a distinguished graduate. He has also completed Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College and Air War College.

He volunteered for duty in Vietnam and served as an intelligence officer in Saigon, Republic of Vietnam and at Nakhon Phanom RTAB, Thailand, in 1972 and 1973. After earning his doctorate degree, Mueh returned to the Academy in 1976 as an associate professor of chemistry. He remained at the Academy except for a stint in 1985-86 as the special assistant for technical matters at the Defense Intelligence Agency at the Pentagon. In 1986, he assumed the position of acting head, department of chemistry, before being selected for his position of permanent professor and head of the department of chemistry in 1987. As faculty athletics representative, he was active in both the Western Athletic Conference and Mountain West Conference, and was the Academy’s representative on the transition team to form the new MWC, the only faculty athletics representative on the team. He competes in golf, racquetball, handball and tennis, and has promoted Air Force Academy intercollegiate sports throughout his tenure, beginning with work as chairman of the hockey eligibility committee, officer representative to the men’s golf team and five years as the officer representative to the football team. Mueh is married to the former Sally Flax of Cincinnati, Ohio. They have three children: Kristine, Kurt and Deborah.

THE ACADEMY/AT THLE ETIC CS/F FACILITIES S Few schools in the country have an athletic program as extensive as the Air Force Academy’s. The goals of the athletic program are to enhance the physical conditioning of all cadets, to develop the physical skills necessary for officership, to teach leadership in a competitive environment and to build character. There are three subdivisions of the athletic program: intercollegiate athletics, intramurals and physical education. The intercollegiate program has 17 men’s and 10 women’s NCAA-sanctioned teams, facing some of the top competition in the nation. Men’s teams are football, baseball, basketball, ice hockey, cross country, fencing, golf, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track, lacrosse, rifle, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo and wrestling. The Academy fields women’s teams in basketball, cross country, fencing, gymnastics, rifle, indoor and outdoor track, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis and volleyball. In addition, the Academy sponsors two nonNCAA programs; boxing and cheerleading. The majority of the Academy’s men’s and women’s programs compete at the

NCAA Division I level in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons compete in this conference against teams from Brigham Young, New Mexico, Colorado State, San Diego State, TCU, Wyoming, Utah and UNLV. All sports also compete against non-conference opponents, including many nationally-ranked teams. The football team competes annually for the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, which is emblematic of service academy football supremacy. The Falcons have won the trophy 16 times, which is more than Army and Navy combined. The winner of the annual rivalry visits with the White House to have the trophy presented by the President of the United States. Falcon Stadium opened on Sept. 22, 1962. The stadium was originally built solely for football, but non-athletic events like the Academy’s annual graduation ceremonies are also conducted there. The newest modification to the stadium was completed in the spring of 2006 with fieldturf. Falcon Stadium has a seating capacity of 46,692.

country. It’s a modern, versatile structure with seemingly endless uses. The $5.6 million building is five stories high and 396 feet by 426 feet, the size of three football fields laid side by side. The structure is divided into three areas--basketball arena, ice hockey arena and multipurpose area. The three sections have a combined seating capacity of 11,000. Clune Arena seats 5,939. The Cadet Ice Rink has a seating capacity of 2,502, while the multipurpose area seats 1,000 fans for track and field competitions. Construction crews began work in August 2010 on the $3.8-million renovation to the Cadet Track Stadium, the outdoor home of the Air Force track and field team. Once completed, the Cadet Track Stadium, located at 6,980 feet above sea level, will be one of the premier track and field facilities in the nation. The department’s newest facility is the Holaday Athletic Center (pictured below), which will be completed in early 2011. The Academy broke ground for the new facility on Oct. 1, 2010.

Skarbonkiewicz’s athletic achievements include National Champion from 1995-1996; U.S. National Saber champion, 1996; qualification for the 1996 U.S. Olympic Fencing Team; No. 1 ranking in U.S. Saber point standing (1995-1997); U.S. National Championships top three saber team finish in 1996, 1997 and 1998, and Polish National Saber Junior champion (1990). Skarbonkiewicz is also a 2007 staff member of the Coaches College.

Strzalkowski brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the fencing team. At Penn State, he was the team captain in 1993 and 1994. He is a three-time NCAA champion (1992, 1993 and 1994) and a four-time AllAmerican (1991-1994). He was a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic fencing team. In 1994 and 1995, he competed on the World Championship teams and was a member of the gold medal team at the Pan-American Games.

THE ACADEMY/S SEAS SON OU UTL LOO OK: 2010-11 1 The Coaches Perspectives After losing several key performers to graduation, including Peter French, 2010 All-American (epee), Michael O’Connor, 2010 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipient (saber), and Jennifer Nolta, MVP and team captain (epee), the returning fencers will be focusing on improving the teams’ overall performances. The Falcons’ coaching staff states their goals for this year’s teams:

teams are led by the team captains, senior Daniel Trapani and junior Simone Barrette. “We want Simone and Dan to anchor the men’s and women’s teams by qualifying again to the NCAA Championships and earning All-America honors,” said the coaching staff. Junior Kaitlyn Bogan (Colfax, Wis.) returns as a starter and is accompanied by two freshmen, Juli Nokleberg (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Olivia Prosseda (Monument, Colo.), who will add depth to the women’s team. “Juli and Olivia are expected to have a good season and help take our women’s team to the next level,” added the coaches. The men’s

team returns several strong competitors in juniors Mister Jackson (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Ben Rinaldi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and sophomores Nathan Sorensen (Houston, Texas) and Dalton Boatright (Amarillo, Texas). Junior Phil Choy (Basking Ridge, N.J.) has been moved from the men’s foil team to the men’s epee team and will add experience and depth to the squad. The addition of freshmen Chase Houser (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and Adam Walker (Severna Park, Md.) will ensure that the men’s epee team remains one of the best in the country.

returns two starters: junior Saskia Hicks (Waterloo, Belgium) and sophomore Heather Nelson (Clifton Park, N.Y.). “We expect Heather to have a good season; we want her to qualify for the NCAA Championships and possibly qualify for the U.S. Junior National Team,” said the coaches. Junior Christina Cassabaum (Tucson, Ariz.) and several freshmen women will compete for the third spot on the women’s saber team. The men’s saber team is led by returning starters junior Geoffrey Pamerleau (Annandale, N.J.) and sophomores Scott Pippin (Palm Desert, Calif.) and Robert “Ed” Wood (Dallas, Texas).

The team adds new depth with freshmen Michael Gallagher (Golden, Colo.) and Emerson Woerner (Carmel, Ind.). “It is a young team, but they have shown promise early and we expect them to compete well at national and NCAA tournaments,” said the coaching staff.

FOIL: The men’s foil team is led by seniors Nick Stockdale (Lansdowne, Pa.) and Will Hock (Shreveport, La.). Stockdale was a 2010 NCAA Championships qualifier. Stockdale and Hock are joined by freshmen Dan Cohen (Scarsdale, N.Y.), Yevgeniy Shmurak (Overland Park, Kan.) and Travis Dyson (Weatherford, Texas), who will add depth to the team and make the men’s team very competitive. “We want Nick to qualify again for the NCAA Championships and earn All-America honors. Dan has a great chance to qualify to the NCAA Championships,” said the coaches. “This is a young team, but it has a lot of talent, so we expect great things from them this year,” they added. Women’s foil will continue with sophomore Yannie Horth and add freshman Diana Hock (Shreveport, La.). The women’s foil team is young and will be stocked with new talent from the pool of freshman walk-ons.

THE ACADEMY/FE ENCIING G SEA ASO ON REVIEW W The Academy’s fencing team kicked off the season hosting the annual Nick Toth Open in September and the Falcon Open in October 2009. Throughout the season, the fencers competed in North American Cups (NAC) around the country. The Falcons also competed in the Amarillo Open and two NCAA collegiate meets (Brandeis University and Duke University). The Falcons capped off the regular season with the 2010 NCAA West Regional Championships in California and the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Division I Fencing Championships in Boston. Along the way, the Falcons picked up a few individual NAC titles, five fencers qualified at the West Regionals for the NCAA Championships and two fencers earned All-America honors. The men’s team placed 10th in the U.S. Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) Coaches Poll. One fencer earned the Academy’s prestigious Outstanding Athletic Achievement Award. The Academy’s fencers traveled to Brandeis University to compete against Brandeis, Boston College, Brown University, MIT, NYU and Harvard in January. Nick Stockdale anchored the men’s foil team with a 15-3 record during the tournament, while Trapani led the men’s epee team with a 162 record. Trapani’s two losses came against MIT and Harvard. Two women finished with stellar individual records. In women’s saber, Nelson had a 14-4 record. In women’s epee, Simone Barrette had a 14-4 record against her opponents. The men’s team was successful in posting five wins over Brandeis, Boston College, Brown University, MIT and NYU. The men fell to Harvard, 10-17. The women’s team was unsuccessful in earning any wins, with losses to Brandeis, Boston College, Brown, Harvard, MIT and NYU.

finishing with a 12-0 record and improving his season record to 28-2. Tim French also added to the team’s success by posting a 10-2 record. Choy led the men’s foil team with a 7-5 record and won an important victory against UNC to win the match for the men’s team. In March at the 2010 West Regional Championships, five fencers qualified for the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships. The last time the Falcons had five qualifiers was in 2007. The Academy fencing team put the cap on the program’s most successful season. At the conclusion of the 2010 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships, Air Force took 12th place and French, who was the men’s epee runner-up, earned his third NCAA All-America honor. In the last seven years in the NCAA, 12th place is the highest team finish for the Academy’s fencing program. Barrette finished ninth with a 13-10 record and received All-America honors. Barrette had the school’s highest NCAA individual finish ever for an Air Force woman fencer. It was the first time since 2005 that two woman fencers, Barrette and Nelson, represented the Falcons at the NCAAs. Barrette is currently the second Air Force woman fencer to earn this honor. In saber, Nelson finished in 18th place with an 8-15 record, in her first appearance at the NCAAs. During the finals, French was the No. 11 seed in men’s epee, and advanced through the semifinals to compete in the final bout against Marat Israelian from St. John’s University. Israelian won the bout, 14-10.

Peter French, who was the men’s epee runner-up, earned his third NCAA All-America honor. Trapani finished 22nd with seven victories in men’s epee. In foil, Stockdale finished in 20th place with an 8-15 record. July 4-13, at the U.S. Summer National Championships in Atlanta, Ga., Nelson competed in the Under-19 Women’s Saber event on July 7, placing 3rd out of 73 competitors. Barrette fenced in the Division 1 Women’s Epee competition on July 6, placing 32nd out of 58 competitors. In February 2010, the USFCA Coaches’ Poll standings were released. The Academy’s men’s team claimed the No. 10 spot in the poll. It was the men’s team’s first USFCA national ranking since 2004 (eighth). The men’s fencing team was the first Academy team to earn a top-10 national ranking during the 2009 academic year.

At the Duke Invite in February, the men’s team finished with a 3-1 record, defeating Duke, Brandeis and UNC and losing only to #1-ranked Penn State. Nelson led the women’s saber team with a 9-3 individual record and Barrette had a 10-2 individual record in women’s epee. Senior Jennifer Nolta finished the day strong, posting a 3-0 record against UNC. The high point of the competition for the Falcons came when the men’s epee team went undefeated and captured the Men’s Epee Cup. Trapani led the way for the Falcons,

THE ACADEMY/FE ENC CING G HIS STORY Y Since 1962, the Academy has qualified 65 members of its fencing program for the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Championships and has sent two teams to participate (1980 and 1992). The 1980 team of Wendell Kubik (foil), Dartanian Warr (epee), Gary Hecker (saber) and Joe McLaughlin (saber) finished 17th. In 1992, the women’s foil team of Denise Chambers, Heidi Gibson, Jennifer Rawlins, Regan Ritchie and Kari Vad finished 12th.

Master Nick Toth 1961-1981 The Academy’s fencing program began in 1955, with the women’s team added in 1977. Master Nick Toth coached the Academy’s teams from 1961-81. The Air Force Academy hosts the annual Nick Toth Memorial Fencing Tournament, in memory of Toth. Born in Hungary, Toth had an illustrious coaching career after his graduation from the Central Sports Institute in Budapest. As a competitor, he won the International Master’s in saber fencing at Innsbruck, Austria, in 1948. Toth was the head coach of the U.S. Olympic Modern Pentathlon team in 1956 at Melbourne. He was the national coach in the Modern Pentathlon World Championships in 1955, ‘57 and ‘58. In addition, Toth was selected as the U.S. National coach at the 1971 World Junior Fencing Championships. In March 1977, he was inducted into the Coaches Hall of Fame. Toth passed away in January 1990. Air Force fencers were undefeated in six of Toth’s 21 seasons and won 15 Western Intercollegiate Conference championships. Eleven of his participants earned All-America honors, including John Swanson who was named three times. The Falcons have finished as high as third (1963) at the NCAA Championships and had 11 top-10 finishes. Women were admitted to the Academy in 1976. Before the NCAA, the women’s teams competed in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) from 1981-82. In 1981, the women finished 16th in the AIAW and in ‘82 they finished eighth in the national championships. In the AIAW Western Region, they were ranked fourth in 1981 and were the 1982 champions.

The Academy was the host for the 1997 and 2003 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships and was host to the 2006 NCAA Western Region Championships. In 2007, Air Force qualified five fencers for the NCAAs. In 2007, the NCAA Championship Committee changed the format for Regionals from a team tournament to individual competition. In 2010, the Academy had seven fencers earn all-region honors following their stellar finishes at the 2010 NCAA West Regionals. Five fencers qualified for the 2010 NCAA Division I Fencing Championships. The teams’ past achievements include 21 NCAA All-Americans (33 times), one two-time USA Olympian, 23 men’s Western Region titles and eight women’s regional titles. The women have achieved four consecutive region titles from 2002-05. Student-athletes have been awarded MWC Scholar-Athletes, the 2007-08 MWC Hal Rothman Sportsmanship award, and the NCAA Sportsmanship award, NCAA postgraduate scholarships, and the 2003 NCAA Woman of the Year (Colorado), and one selection as the 2007-08 independent nominee for the NCAA’s 18th annual Woman of the Year award. The nominees represent all three divisions and have excelled in academics, athletics, leadership and community service; an Academy-named scholar-athlete and two outstanding athletic achievement recipients. Former Academy fencer, Seth Kelsey, was the 2003 NCAA men’s epee national champion. Kelsey also participated in the World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) and competed in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. Cadet-athletes have assumed squadron roles as element leaders, non-commissioned officers, squadron commanders and peer counselors. Cadets also play key roles within the community, performing community service. Over the past 12 years, the team has compiled a 210-153 (.570) cumulative team record under head coach Abdel Salem. The program’s cumulative fencing record is 862424-7 (.660).

Former fencers have gone on to careers in the U.S. Air Force as pilots, commanders and general officers and, after retirement, a former president of U.S. Fencing, while others have returned to the Academy as head coaches, assistant coaches and officer representatives. Several Academy fencers have been accepted into the WCAP. The fencing program has one head coach, Abdel Salem, who has been at the helm of the Academy’s fencing program since 1999. Salem was a 10-year member of the Egyptian National Fencing team and competed in the 1984 Olympics. In 1996, he was named the U.S. Olympic Committee Coach of the Year. Assistant coach Adam Skarbonkiewicz, who is a 2002 Master of Fencing from the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice, Poland, joined the program in 2005. Tom Strzalkowski has been with the Falcons since 2002 as a volunteer coach. Timothy French, assistant coach (foil), joined the Air Force Academy’s fencing program in December 2009 as assistant coach. The Air Force Academy is affiliated with the Mountain West Conference. In fencing, the Academy competes against Western Region opponents UC San Diego, CalTech and Stanford University. Twice a year, the Academy travels to both coasts to compete in NCAA sanctioned meets against Duke, Notre Dame, North Carolina, John’s Hopkins and Army in the east, and UC San Diego, CalTech, Stanford and Northwestern in the west. At the Academy, 2010 marked the 54th season (1956) for the men’s fencing program and the 27th season (1983) for the women’s fencing program. In 2010, the Academy’s men’s fencing team claimed the No. 10 spot in the USFCA Coaches’ Poll standings. It was the Academy fencing team’s first USFCA national ranking since 2004 (eighth). The men’s fencing team was the first Academy team to earn a top-10 national ranking during the 2009-10 academic year. NCAA Championship History Before 1990, the NCAA held separate fencing championships for men and women. Championships were held for the men from 1941 through 1989 and for the women from 1982 through 1989. New York University and Columbia dominated the men’s side, winning 12 and 11 team titles, respectively. Wayne State (Mich.) was the dominant team on the women’s side before 1990, winning three of nine team titles. Since 1990, the NCAA team champion has been determined by a combination of women’s and men’s scoring.
