THE MANAGER

Eddie Howe THIS AFTERNOON WE WELCOME STEVE EVANS AND HIS ROTHERHAM SIDE, WHO HAVE SETTLED WELL INTO THE CHAMPIONSHIP AND ALREADY HAVE A COUPLE OF WINS UNDER THEIR BELTS. We know from facing Brentford a few weeks ago just how dangerous newly promoted sides can be, and we’re expecting a really tough test today. After a disappointing result at Blackburn it was good to get back to winning ways against Northampton in the Capital One Cup, where we passed the ball well, worked hard and took the opportunities we created on the night to move into the third round and a difficult tie at Cardiff.

with a well deserved point, and a reward for our travelling support who backed us throughout. Jason and I were delighted to bring Andrew Surman back to the club on a permanent contract before the transfer window closed last week. Andrew was a key player for us last season and instrumental in our form in the second half of the season. He understands our philosophy, and will add to a really strong squad.

AFTER A DISAPPOINTING RESULT AT BLACKBURN IT WAS GOOD TO GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS AGAINST NORTHAMPTON IN THE CAPITAL ONE CUP.

We took that form into a really tough test away at Norwich a few days later. Facing a team who have kept most of the players who performed in the Premier League last season, we responded really well after conceding an early goal. Callum’s equaliser on the stroke of half time was a reward for our response, and just as pleasing was the quality of the passing and movement in the build-up. In the second half we defended well as a unit, and had a couple of opportunities ourselves to win the match, but in the end we were happy to leave Carrow Road and head into the international break

We are really happy with the business we’ve done over the course of the summer window, bringing in Dan, Junior and Callum in addition to Andrew. It gives us strength in depth, genuine competition for places, and adds quality rather than quantity, which was always our aim. Just as pleasing is keeping our squad together, which gives us a strong platform to push on in the months ahead.

> THE CHAIRMAN

Jeff Mostyn I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO EXTEND A VERY WARM WELCOME TO CHAIRMAN TONY STEWART, THE DIRECTORS, PLAYERS, STAFF AND VISITING SUPPORTERS FROM OUR GUESTS THIS AFTERNOON, ROTHERHAM UNITED. I would also like to congratulate Tony and everyone involved with the club on their promotion to the Sky Bet Championship last season. Our visitors this afternoon have trodden a similar path to us over the recent past. Both clubs were relegated into Football League Division Two in 2008 with a deduction of 17 points, this followed the 10 point deduction the previous season. History shows that with a great deal of perseverance, commitment, and some might say a siege mentality given the transfer embargoes, both clubs survived the drop out of the Football League that season. Whilst many thought the prospect of either club ever reaching the Championship was a fantasy, I am delighted to say the fantasy has become a reality for both of us. Knowing Tony as well as I do, I know that his commitment to Rotherham United is immense, the magnificent New York Stadium alone is a testament to his investment in the club. Once again the similarities between the two clubs is mirrored by Maxim Demin’s incredible commitment and investment in our own club.

for the duration of the match. As always we are here at the Goldsands this afternoon to win the contest. I am certain, like me, you are all delighted to be back watching football following the international week. I am finding the break more and more expensive, having to go shopping instead of watching football! Don’t worry, there are only three more this season. Given the break it would be easy and remiss of me not to comment on our last game away to Norwich City. I would like to congratulate Eddie, Jason and the boys on a fantastic performance in front of 26,000. The point we gained was the very least we deserved. The Norwich directors said we were the best footballing side they have played this season, praise itself from a recent Premier League side. I sincerely hope that today’s game will be as exciting as the previous encounters between the clubs. Please get behind the boys from start to finish and thank you all once again for your incredible support. Enjoy the game! Kindest regards,

As for today’s game, we hope the similarities end there and we can leave the friendship behind, at least

> THE CAPTAIN

Tommy Elphick GOOD AFTERNOON AND WELCOME TO THE GOLDSANDS STADIUM FOR THE VISIT OF ROTHERHAM UNITED. It’s good to be back at home after a tough visit to Norwich in which we came from behind to get a good draw, and then of course we had last weekend off due to the international break. I think the result at Norwich concluded a positive start to the season and we can take great confidence from it into this next chunk of games. We said that result would define our start and we have to look at not only the results but the performances, and I feel both have been positive.

And if anyone doubts our style of play, and I’m sure there aren’t many that do, take a look at our equaliser at Norwich - 31 passes, numerous switches of play and rotations, and then a clinical finish to round it off. It was so pleasing for all the lads because we work on these phases every day. The break last weekend has given us plenty of time to prepare for this game; we’ve all put plenty of hard work in and got through some great work on the training pitch, so we should be primed to go from the first whistle. We were pleased with so many different aspects of the Norwich game but we still feel there is more to come and these two home games give us the perfect opportunity to do so and to gain more momentum in climbing the table.

IT WAS GOOD TO SEE ANDREW SURMAN COME BACK ON DEADLINE DAY

It was also good to see Andrew Surman come back on deadline day. We all know his strengths and his style of play so it won’t take long to see him at his best for us. Equally though it was just as good that there weren’t any departures, keeping our squad intact, as the window can throw up some crazy scenarios.

Looking ahead, we have two home games on the trot now and we want to take full advantage of that. Rotherham have made a good start to life in the Championship and have shown that they are more than capable of holding their own. As a club they have momentum and they also have a manager that gets his players working hard for him, so we need to try to outwork them as a minimum requirement and then hopefully our passing style can shine through.

I said about the hard work that we will have to put in today and you fans can help lift us and give us that edge to start quickly and outwork a team, so we ask you to be as loud as ever and help us move forward. Enjoy the game,

Rotherham United

By Richard Jones

AFTER CONSECUTIVE PROMOTIONS, AND COMPLETE WITH A STUNNING NEW STADIUM, ROTHERHAM UNITED REPRESENT A TEAM FULL OF CONFIDENCE AND MOMENTUM. However, it was a different story six years ago, when the club was on the very brink of existence but, thanks to Tony Stewart, Rotherham’s fortunes have drastically improved. The local businessman stepped in and bought the debt-ridden Millers, who faced administration at the foot of League Two, PAGE 14 / AFC BOURNEMOUTH v ROTHERHAM UNITED 13/09/2014

with a 17-point penalty in 2008 and invested heavily in the club to transform the South Yorkshire side. Rotherham’s meteoric rise coincided with the move to their £17m New York Stadium and the arrival of Steve Evans in 2012, who overhauled the squad and led Rotherham to backto-back promotions.

The Millers’ chairman has his eye on the top-flight and with over £30m and counting invested and a strong squad, the South Yorkshire side could well be up there with the promotion pack again this year.

> OPPOSITION GUIDE THE MANAGER

Steve Evans can boast four promotions in four years, with two consecutively in his last two seasons at Crawley Town, before he became Rotherham manager in 2012 and led the club to back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship.

ONE TO WATCH

Midfielder Richie Smallwood impressed on loan from Middlesbrough last season and recently made a permanent switch to Rotherham. The 23-year-old made 19 appearances for the Millers, including the play-off final, where he scored the penalty shoot-out winner against Leyton Orient.

CULT HERO

Ronnie Moore’s prolific record as a striker in the 80s helped the Millers become Division Three champions and when he returned as manager in 1997, he led the club to two consecutive promotions to seal his place as a firm fanfavourite.

A SPOT OF BOTHER

The passion of Millers boss Evans can sometimes get the better of him. Whilst managing former club Crawley, the Scot’s outburst after a heated showdown against Bradford City, which saw five players sent off, cost him a six-game stadium ban.

FAMOUS FANS

Comedians Barry and Paul Elliott, better known as The Chuckle Brothers, from the children’s BBC show, are lifelong fans and were made honorary presidents in 2007, whilst former referee Howard Webb and Muse bassist Chris Wolstenholme also follow the club.

KEY PLAYER: LEE FRECKLINGTON Lee Frecklington joined the Millers on loan in 2012 and made an instant impact, with a goal in his debut against Aldershot Town. The midfielder joined Rotherham in search of first team opportunities after he struggled to fit in plans at Peterborough and has quickly become a fans’ favourite at the New York stadium. The 29-year-old played in the Millers’ consecutive promotion campaigns and scored 22 goals in two seasons to earn a permanent deal. Last year, Frecklington made 39 starts and was voted Player of the Year for his strong performances as a link between the defence and attack.

DID YOU KNOW? Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena rent row was not the first of its kind and followed Rotherham’s exit from Millmoor, where they played for over a century and gained their nickname from the nearby Hovis flour mill. Whilst Coventry played fixtures at Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium until a recent agreement, Rotherham United spent four seasons at Sheffield’s Don Valley stadium whilst they built their New York ground after a rent disagreement.

LATEST NEWS Despite a host of summer arrivals, the Millers boss made two final swoops on deadline day, with the signatures of strikers Jonson Clarke-Harris and Luciano Becchio from Oldham Athletic and Norwich City respectively. Becchio joined on loan from the Canaries, whilst Clarke-Harris signed permanently and smashed the club’s previous transfer record set by forward Jordan Bowery, who recently joined from Aston Villa. The three strikers provide firepower after Millers’ top-scorer last season Kieran Agard was lured away by League One side Bristol City. Another addition to the New York Stadium was a big screen, which was recently installed in the North West corner of the ground and will provide pre-match interviews, team line-ups and action replays.

ADAM COLLIN

Adam is a big lad and a big influence on the team. He’s been at the club for a few years now and kept us in games last season with some of his saves.

06

04

KIRK BROADFOOT RICHARD WOOD KARI ARNASON Kirk has only recently joined the club but he has made a good first impression. He is a centre half, who has done ever so well out of position at right back.

He is a big, strong lad who looks after himself and never lets the team down. Richard made his first appearance of the season two weeks ago and did well.

One of Kari’s biggest strengths is his composure on the ball – he’s always so calm and his distribution is good. That’s always a good thing to have in a centre half.

03 JOE SKARZ

Skarzy is one of the first lads I met when I joined and he’s one of my best mates at the club. He gets up and down and puts good crosses in, but he defends well too.

Meet the Rotherham United squad Midfielder Richard Smallwood introduces this afternoon’s visitors to the Goldsands Stadium.

27 MATT DERBYSHIRE

Matt is quick, has good movement and is up there as one of the best finishers in the squad. He’s a great lad off the pitch too.

01 SCOTT LOACH

Loachy hasn’t had too many chances in the first team, but we see every day in training what a good goalkeeper he is.

PAGE 16 / AFC BOURNEMOUTH v ROTHERHAM UNITED 13/09/2014

08 LEE FRECKLINGTON

Lee is the heartbeat of the team. He gets up and down the pitch and scores important goals, which he did a number of times last season.

17

18 BEN PRINGLE

He is a hard working player who has a lot of quality on the ball. Ben made it into the League One team of the year last term, which was thoroughly deserved.

02

CONOR NEWTON RICHARD Conor hasn’t played BRINDLEY too much this season, but he is pushing for a place in the team. He’s sharp and is good with both feet.

33

He’s a powerful lad and has a good shot on him for a right back. Richard gets up and down the pitch well, which is a real bonus for the team.

25 JOHN SWIFT

Swifty was away with England Under-20s during the international break. He’s learning still, but he has the quality and the right attitude.

RICHARD SMALLWOOD

I signed on loan last season and it was a massive success for me. We went up through the play-offs and I was really pleased to sign on a permanent basis.

28 ANTHONY WORDSWORTH

He’s a big lad who has a good touch and awareness. Anthony has been a good addition since he signed for us.

09 ALEX REVELL

Alex is a target man and he wins more flick ons than any other player I have ever seen. He’s also the hardest working player and has goals in him.

10

26 PAUL TAYLOR

Paul joined us on loan from Ipswich Town and his quality is undeniable. Hopefully he can chip in with a few goals and enjoy his time with us.

24

JORDAN BOWERY FABIAN BRANDY Jordan is quick, powerful and strong, which makes him difficult to play against. He is still young though and has a lot of potential.

Fab is just coming back from injury and will be an important player for us when he’s fit. He’s got great quality.

Shirt Tales FROM THE AWAY TOP THE MILLERS ONCE LENT BOURNEMOUTH, TO THE VICTORIOUS PROMOTION SHIRT THAT NOBODY LIKED, MATCHDAY’S RESIDENT REPLICA KIT EXPERT GARETH DAVIES LOOKS AT FOUR ROTHERHAM OFFERINGS FROM THE PAST. During their formative years in existence, Rotherham United took to the field in a predominately black shirt trimmed with an amber V. The reasoning behind this colour scheme is a mystery as it bore little resemblance to the Rotherham County and Rotherham Town teams that merged in the mid 1920s to form the present day Millers. It was for the 1928/29 campaign that Rotherham first adopted their now well

known red and white combination, one which they have used with very little variation since. Most of the suppliers that the Millers have used over the years have replicated this well, with very few failures, although most offerings would be described as steady rather than spectacular.

History Maker HOME 2012/13 Similarly to the Cherries, Rotherham have had a pretty problematic recent history in terms of finance. Both clubs found themselves in administration during 2008, and if the situation here at Dean Court was considered traumatic, things were even worse in South Yorkshire. At loggerheads with previous regimes over use of their Millmoor ground, Rotherham were forced to play home matches at the soulless Don Valley athletics stadium in Sheffield. Thankfully this was only a temporary measure, as just four years later the side were running out at a new purpose built ground. The move back to Rotherham saw the club mark this momentous occasion with a commemorative new shirt

PAGE 20 / AFC BOURNEMOUTH v ROTHERHAM UNITED 13/09/2014

which not only carried the club emblem, but the town’s coat of arms too. Made by Puma from their stable of generic templates, it was a simple and attractive design of white sleeves and red body, with the maker’s branding appearing inside a neat shoulder flash. If the return home was considered a remarkable achievement, this shirt’s levels of fondness rose to extreme proportions as the team exceeded all expectations by gaining promotion to League One whilst wearing it.

Classic Cherries AWAY 2000/01 There was actually nothing that could be considered remotely ‘classic’ about this shirt and a game at Millmoor involving the Cherries in March 2001, so perhaps ‘unusual’ would sum things up more aptly. The reason being that in the aforementioned match, the visitors curiously took to the field wearing Rotherham’s away shirt.

The explanation for these strange circumstances is that both Cherries’ shirts from this particular season clashed with the hosts’ principal offering. The Football League’s solution to the problem was for Bournemouth to wear blue and it didn’t prove a lucky omen either as Rotherham won the game 3-1!

Best Forgotten AWAY 2013/14 Even though promotion was attained via the play-offs wearing this shirt, which prompted chairman Tony Stewart to declare grey was his favourite colour, the Millers faithful still won’t be swayed with their opinion that this is one of the most disappointing shirts Rotherham have ever worn. It’s easy to see why though as grey often makes for a

drab, uninspiring effort with this shirt exactly that. It was supposed to have a two year lifespan, but has been relegated to third choice for this campaign, making way for a much improved predominately white affair which the Millers will wear today.

Masterpiece HOME 1980/81 Rotherham have seemingly always adopted a cautious approach to their home shirt designs over the years. However, the period with Hobott as supplier during the early 80s bucked this trend as they managed to do things differently and still win supporter endorsement.

Their first home shirt was the best of the lot and it was used during the 1980/81 Division Three promotion campaign. Complete with iconic v-neck, its most striking feature being the use of gold trim throughout. An excellent complement to the standard red and white colour scheme, the only disappointment being this wonderful detail hasn’t been used since.

> ANDREW SURMAN BACK FOR GOOD

The summer transfer window brings with it the usual air of un-expectancy, from the rumours of clubs making big money moves to others being stripped of their prize assets. But whilst names are bandied about and speculation comes and goes, one name was continually connected with the Cherries. So although it was no huge surprise to the public that on the evening of deadline day two-time loanee Andrew Surman was eventually unveiled as an AFC Bournemouth player, the man himself admits it was still a race against time. “The longer it went on it became clear that it was probably going to go to deadline day and I did wonder if it was actually going to happen,” he admits to Matchday. “It was a bit of a mad time because at the start of the summer I thought I was going to be coming here and then the manager at Norwich said he wanted me to stay, so there was that to consider. “It was difficult because I had to live away from my

family for eight weeks in a hotel. Every day I was thinking ‘Am I going to have to pack my stuff up?’

of speculation but a couple of tough years for the midfielder, who recently turned 28.

“I was literally living out of my car, and I had three suitcases that I kept packing and unpacking because I didn’t know

Having experienced the ecstasy of promotion to the Premier League with Norwich in 2011, injury then forced him to spend a year on the side-lines before he returned for his second loan spell with the Cherries last summer.

I WAS LIVING OUT OF MY CAR AND I HAD THREE SUITCASES THAT I KEPT PACKING AND UNPACKING. MY LITTLE BOY WAS GOING BACK TO SCHOOL AND I DIDN’T KNOW IF HE WAS GOING TO BE UP THERE OR DOWN HERE.

where I was going to be.

“My little boy was going back to school and I didn’t know if he was going to be up there or down here. “It was an unsettling time for both myself and my family, but I am glad it got sorted and we can all look forward to the future now.” The move puts to bed not only a summer

And it was the twelve months he spent on the south coast that opened his eyes to the realisation that his future lay away from Carrow Road. “I have got great memories of my first two years at Norwich but I just felt it was time to leave. The last two years hadn’t gone well for me there and I had a great year here last year. I just wanted a fresh start. “It was difficult because at the end of the day I was under contract with Norwich so it wasn’t a case of saying that I wanted to leave and them agreeing because they’ve got business to sort. They weren’t going to let me go for free. “After I started the first game it probably looked like I had decided to stay there, but there were still a W W W. A F C B . C O . U K / PA G E 3 1

lot of discussions between myself, my agent, Norwich and Bournemouth going on and ultimately I felt it wasn’t quite right and I didn’t feel that I was going to be playing that regularly. “At the time the manager there said he wanted me to be part of it, but the longer it went on I wasn’t being offered a long term contract when others possibly were. “I felt that maybe I wasn’t valued there as much as I’d liked to have been, but I felt I would be valued here. I had no doubts I wanted to come back.” Another factor that probably affected the delay in the deal being completed was the fate of the fixture list, which handed the Cherries a trip to Carrow Road just two days before the window closed. Omitted from the squad, as he had been for all but two of the Canaries’ August fixtures, Surman was at the game in his Norwich tracksuit but laughing and joking with the Cherries as he watched them board the bus to take the route that he would take just two days later. “It was a strange experience for me because I was a PAGE 32 / AFC BOURNEMOUTH v ROTHERHAM UNITED 13/09/2014

Norwich player at the time so I wanted the lads to do well but I was thinking, ‘I could be a Bournemouth player in a few days so I want them to do well too’, so I was glad it was a draw and a decent game in the end really!

I FELT THAT MAYBE I WASN’T VALUED AT NORWICH AS MUCH AS I’D LIKED TO HAVE BEEN, BUT I FELT I WOULD BE VALUED HERE. I HAD NO DOUBTS I WANTED TO COME BACK.

“I wasn’t surprised Bournemouth came and did well and put on a show. I don’t think anyone was to be honest; I obviously knew what they were about but Neil Adams and the people at Norwich expected them to come and do well, which they did. “If Norwich had been playing someone else on that Saturday the deal

might have got done before, but I think that’s why there’s so many deals done on the last day, because teams are holding out for money or because of terms, or fixtures like that one. “I told the gaffer there that I wanted my future sorted before the season even started, so I was hoping that fixture wouldn’t matter, but in the end I was still a Norwich player when the game came around, which was a bit surreal.” Fast forward just over a week and as Surman speaks to Matchday, the drama of deadline day is well and truly behind him. Fresh off the training pitches, whilst admitting it has been another tough session, he is in a buoyant mood when talking about the future both for himself and the team. “It has been just like fitting back in from the end of the last season as obviously I know all the lads and what the gaffer is about,” he says. “The tempo is high, which I haven’t been used to at Norwich, but it won’t take long to get back used to how the manager likes to do things.

international break has given me a good chance to get some good training in with the lads. It’s been about getting my legs back and things like that. “We have real strength in depth in the squad now, especially in midfield, but it just makes you think we have more chance of being promoted. It also makes you realise that whoever comes in has to be at it and prove you deserve a place in the team. DISABLED SUPPORTERS UPDATE AFC BOURNEMOUTH HELD ITS FIRST DISABLED SUPPORTERS FOCUS GROUP ON FRIDAY 8TH AUGUST, WITH THE AIM OF IMPROVING THE MATCHDAY EXPERIENCE FOR DISABLED SUPPORTERS, THEIR PERSONAL ASSISTANTS AND FAMILIES. 15 supporters attended the productive meeting, which took over three hours, and as a result the club has since taken the following actions: • The room in the East Stand is now open to disabled supporters on a matchday, offering the opportunity to meet before the game, purchase a matchday programme, as well as providing refreshments. With today’s game being the launch of this room, feedback from those who have used it is encouraged, and should be sent to disability@afcb.co.uk. We have also managed to implement improvements to the disabled supporters experience in the 1910 club bar such as providing more chairs pre and post match. • Wheelchair users have been emailed encouraging them to use the East Stand platform on matchdays. Supporters have also been reminded that booking must come through the club and can be done so by e-mailing disability@afcb. co.uk. The issue of film crews using the platform has also been addressed and since the start of the season all media crews have used the press gantry. In addition all season ticket holders sitting in front of the platform have been emailed to explain why the platform is there.

not seen the emergency contingency plan for disabled supporters. This has been sent to the focus group for comments with a view to finalising the plans in the near future.

• The relevant people have been spoken to regarding staff walking from stand to stand during the game, and a line has been included within the press pack asking photographers to be considerate of supporters in row A. Stewards have also been briefed to move supporters on during the game. • Supporters had raised the point that they had noticed the disabled toilets were being used by people without a disability. Posters have since been put up, and stewards have been briefed. • The club have spoken with the chair of the safety advisory group about the possibility of removing seats in row A to allow more space for wheelchair users. Due to the hazard this would create for supporters in row B, unfortunately the club are unable to move forward with this. • The focus group raised concerns as they had

• Away travel for wheelchair users has been again looked into and companies suggested at the focus group have been unable to assist. The club welcome further suggestions of companies that could help, please e-mail your suggestions to disability@afcb.co.uk. • Away stadium information for supporters with disabilities is something that is being enhanced by the club. There will now be a link on away ticket stories providing information on the disabled facilities. Clubs will also be contacted in advance of the away fixture to request any additional information. • Access in and out of the club store was raised as an issue during the focus group. The club are planning to assist in this area in the near future. The next meeting will be held in early November and supporters will be contacted as soon as this has been confirmed. To find out more about how AFC Bournemouth are looking to improve relations with disabled supporters, please email disability@afcb.co.uk.

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST

PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST IN THE LATEST EDITION OF PROGRAMMES FROM THE PAST, WE TAKE A LOOK AT AN IMPORTANT SEASON IN CHERRIES’ HISTORY, BUT PERHAPS NOT FOR THE RIGHT REASONS. In 1972/73, John Bond was well into his heralded tenure at the helm of the newly named AFC Bournemouth, and had made significant progress during his two seasons in charge. Having just missed out on promotion to the second tier for what would’ve been the first time in the club’s history, by three points and one place, this season felt like make or break for Bond’s high-flying Cherries. Despite the inevitable departure of free-scoring Ted Macdougall for £200,000 to Manchester United in September, the campaign had begun well. Big wins against Rochdale, Port Vale and Charlton were all superseded by an incredible 7-2 away victory over today’s visitors Rotherham, which included four goals from Super Mac’s replacement Brian Clark. As illustrated over the next 16 pages, spirits were high at Dean Court on 3rd February

1973, with the Cherries two points off top spot in Division Three, and having a game in hand over league leaders Oldham Athletic. The game itself did nothing to dampen the spirits, a crushing 4-0 win saw the Cherries reach the summit of the division by 5pm, and talk was once again turning to promotion and the second tier. Goals from Micky Cave, Mel Machin and a brace from Phil Boyer, all in the first half, saw the Cherries cruise to a win which took the tally of goals against the Millers to a whopping 11 for the season. Unfortunately for the Dean Court faithful, the season would quickly fizzle out. Despite a good home win two weeks later against Bolton Wanderers, Bond’s boys would only pick up maximum points in three of their final 14 matches, and slip to a final league position of seventh.

After setting the pace for much of the season, the Cherries had narrowly missed out on promotion for the second consecutive season, and the knock-on effect would be dramatic. Bond and his assistant Ken Brown would depart to join Norwich City the following autumn after growing impatient at the Cherries’ inability to progress further than Division Three. With them they eventually took a number of important players including Boyer, Machin and John Benson, a move which Bournemouth fans would long lament and blame for seven seasons in Fourth Division wilderness after relegation under Trevor Hartley in 1974/75. n

SANNINO OUT, GARCIA IN AT WATFORD

HOCKADAY SACKED AFTER SIX GAMES AT LEEDS

POWELL HANDED HUDDERSFIELD JOB

Watford head coach Beppe Sannino resigned on 31st August, a day after they beat Huddersfield 4-2 with 10 men at Vicarage Road to stay second in the Championship table. The Italian, who had replaced Gianfranco Zola as Hornets boss last December, stated that he had “gone as far as I can” with the club. Two days later, former Brighton boss Oscar Garcia was named as Sannino’s replacement, having taken the Seagulls to last season’s Championship play-off semi-finals.

Leeds sacked manager Dave Hockaday on 28th August, after winning two and losing four of his only six games in charge. Owner Massimo Cellino admitted he had considered sacking the exForest Green Rovers boss after their 4-1 league defeat at Watford, but had a change of heart only for their 2-1 Capital One Cup loss at local rivals Bradford to lead Cellino to act. With Hockaday’s assistant Junior Lewis also leaving Elland Road, academy boss Neil Redfearn has taken over as caretaker manager for the third time in two-and-a-half years.

Huddersfield are the third Championship side to have changed their manager already this season, after Mark Robins left following their opening day defeat by Bournemouth. His replacement was unveiled last week as former Charlton boss Chris Powell. Terriers chairman Dean Hoyle said, “As a player, a coach and a manager, Chris knows what it takes to succeed at Championship level. Alongside his experience with Charlton, he was also promoted out of this division three times during his playing career and has become accustomed to winning.”

At the time of writing, Leeds, who visit the Goldsands Stadium on Tuesday have not announced a permanent successor, although a number of big names have been linked with the role. ExLeeds striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who spent last season in charge of Belgian side Royal Antwerp, confirmed his interest earlier this week.

Meanwhile, a fourth managerial change could come at Blackpool, who have lost all six games this season under Jose Riga. Although Riga remains in place for now, Burton Albion announced on Tuesday that their manager Gary Rowett had been approached by Blackpool and, with their blessing, had held talks with the Seasiders but chose to stay with Burton.

Having stepped down from that job in May, the Spaniard then spent two months in charge of Maccabi Tel Aviv, but resigned in August citing the current security situation in Israel. Watford technical director Gianluca Nani, who had arrived alongside Zola in 2012, resigned on the same day that Garcia arrived, but star striker Troy Deeney has signed a new four-year contract.

Punk Football: The Rise Of Fan Ownership In English Football

by Jim Keoghan

THE PROBLEM OF FINANCIAL MISMANAGEMENT RUINING FOOTBALL CLUBS HAS BEEN COMMON IN THE GAME OVER THE LAST FEW DECADES. In this book, Keoghan highlights the plights of many teams and their fans who went from being mistreated customers to saving the clubs they love. The fans had to take action into their own hands and the DIY ethos of punk music can be seen in football as ordinary fans eschew the established system and decide there is nothing stopping them from getting together to run the clubs they support. The troubles at Bournemouth in 1997 feature heavily and are accompanied with quotes from Trevor Watkins: ‘As a long-time supporter with a legal background, Trevor approached the board to assist in the fight for survival. The club were £5 million in debt and creditors wanted their money. The club didn’t generate enough revenue to make ends meet. I think losses at the time were about £50,000 per month. It was in many ways, the ‘classic’ football story. ‘”What do supporters do when the club they love is facing extinction? The answer is they do what they have to do to ensure the

club survives,” states Trevor. The trust fund was officially launched at a meeting at The Winter Gardens, attended by 3000 people and addressed by fans, local councillors and Mel Machin and succeeded in raising £33,000 in that one night.’ So where does this sit with AFC Bournemouth and Punk Football? The book describes how rescue packages were unsuccessful with local businessmen. ‘With no-one coming forward we began to think ‘why not us?’ Just because fans had not owned a club before didn’t mean that it could not be done. After months of searching the trust eventually put together a group of wealthier supporters and drafted a plan.’ It was a bid that the bank agreed to back. Bournemouth became the first club in England to be owned by the supporters, therefore

the first example of ‘punk football’ in the league. Later chapters focus on teams such as AFC Wimbledon, who were formed as a reaction to MK Dons, and FC United of Manchester, who came about due to the mistreatment of fans by owners. As well as various other teams there is also an insight into how Portsmouth went from Premier League big spenders to strugglers in League Two, yet still exist. ‘Working together supporters can achieve something remarkable, ‘punk football’ has changed what it means to be a fan in England today.’ Something changed in football, thanks to actions in this town, 17 years ago. n Follow Tom on Twitter @tomblay

> THE ANALYST

The Analyst MICHAEL DUNNE OF THE ALL DEPARTMENTS PODCAST IS BACK ONCE MORE. THIS WEEK, THE SEARCH IS ON TO SEE IF THE CORRELATION BETWEEN DISCIPLINE AND RESULTS IS AS OBVIOUS AS IT SEEMS. Even the loudest advocates of using the data driven approach to try and win football matches would concede that, at best, the statistics only tell half the story. Nowhere is this more apparent than when it comes to collecting figures for fouls and red and yellow cards. Studs up tackles that everyone in the ground seems to see apart from the officials can go entirely unpunished. Equally, a devious centre forward can dive over a goalkeeper’s outstretched arm, get the innocent ‘keeper sent off and promptly wheel away in triumph after scoring the resulting penalty. Infuriating as these events can be, disciplinary data recorded over a period of time can begin to tell the tale with a little more clarity. Our red and black hearts should swell with pride when recalling that our Cherries committed the least fouls over the course of last season in the entire Championship. Our total of 430 free kicks awarded for fouls against equates to an average of just 9.25 per game, compared to 13.33 for the division’s most frequently penalised team, Yeovil Town. Bournemouth were the seventh most fouled team in the Championship, with 538 free kicks going our way over the course of the season, at

fifth highest in the division. Only four Cherries saw red over the season, although the league high was just six. Seven opposing players were sent off against us, bettered only by Reading and Sheffield Wednesday on nine.

To play the thrilling brand of football seen frequently at Dean Court last season, whilst maintaining such a clean cut image, is an accomplishment to match any of our recent triumphs. Our virtuous reputation is further enhanced when it comes to yellow and red cards. Last season the Cherries collected 65 yellow cards, sixth lowest in the division, whilst the 86 shown to our opponents were the

Despite the old adage regarding 10 men playing better than 11, Bournemouth lost three of the four games where we found ourselves a man down. A similar pattern emerges from the seven games where an opponent saw red, with the Cherries picking up three wins and two draws. Perhaps most tellingly, we lost just one of the eight Championship fixtures where none of our players saw a card of any colour. n

JUNIOR CHERRIES Leading children’s author to appear at fanzone

The Junior Fanzone has already been a huge success this season and for the visit of Charlton, it is set to be bigger and better than ever with the visit of popular children’s author Dan Freedman. Having worked closely with the England national team during his time working at the FA, Freedman’s exciting journalistic career has seen him interview Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, David Beckham and Sir Alex Ferguson. And now he has turned his hand to writing, shooting to fame with the popular ‘Jamie Johnson’ book series, documenting the journey of a young footballer who is on a quest to make it to the top. ‘’You’ll read this and want to get out there and play,’’ former England captain Steven Gerrard said of his books. ‘’If you like football, this book’s for you,’’ Frank Lampard added, and now you could meet the man himself ahead of the Charlton home game on Saturday 18th October.

Freedman will be signing autographs in the Fanzone from 12.30pm, whilst there will also be books on sale and an exclusive giveaway, so make sure you come along to meet the man himself! Reserved exclusively for supporters under 16, young fans can also take part in a host of activities at the fanzone, including games, Xboxes, colouring and lots more, in the Broomhill Garden Buildings family stand between 12.30 and 2pm.

> WE’RE ON OUR WAY

We’re on our way to Vicarage Road Opponents: Watford Kick-off: Saturday 20th September (12.15pm) Capacity: 17,477 (all seated) Distance from the Goldsands Stadium: 105.7 miles Post code for sat nav: WD18 0ER Ticket prices: Adults £26, over 65s £15, young adults (16-19) £15, students (under 25s) £15, under 16s £10. Coach travel price: £19 per person for season ticket holders and £24 per person for non-season ticket holders (leaves the Goldsands Stadium at 8.00am).

Matt Freeman discusses his tips for Cherries supporters travelling to Vicarage Road for next Saturday’s televised clash against Watford. What was the atmosphere like at the stadium? It was a strange atmosphere last year given the result, but there were a lot of Cherries supporters there, and as it was the first away day back in the Championship, it was enjoyable. Away fans are located behind one of the goals at the Vicarage Road end of the stadium and are given quite a large allocation, so if a lot of supporters travel, it could be very noisy. Where would you recommend to eat/drink around the stadium? Odd Fellows in nearby Fearnley Street welcomes away supporters, otherwise the ground is in walking distance of the town centre, where there is a large Wetherspoons outlet called the Moon Under Water, an O’Neils and a Walkabout. Where are the best places to park? There doesn’t appear to be any on-site parking at the club, due to it being located in the middle of a town. However there are lots of car parks in the nearby town centre, which is around a 10 minute walk away and there was also a private match day car park

Last time out: Watford 2-0 AFC Bournemouth which we parked at - Watford Grammar School for Girls, which cost £7. This is slightly nearer to the ground than the town centre and around a five minute walk away. Are there any tips you would give people in terms of travel methods? Travelling by car is easy and takes just under two hours. We took the M3, then the M25, exiting at junction 19 and following the signs to Watford. It is next to a hospital which is also well signposted. If taking the train, it is easiest to get the train direct from Bournemouth to London Waterloo, before then taking the tube to Euston and embarking on the overground to Watford Junction. Watford High Street is the nearest tube station, as Watford Junction is around a 20 minute walk away, but you could either walk or get the train to the High Street. n W W W. A F C B . C O . Local businesses enjoy sun-basked corporate golf day OVER 80 REPRESENTATIVES FROM A HOST OF LOCAL BUSINESSES ENJOYED THE SUNSHINE AT AFC BOURNEMOUTH’S CORPORATE SUMMER GOLF DAY. Held on the picturesque course at The Dorset Golf & County Club on Monday 18th August, the event, sponsored by the Greyhound Freehouse at Winterborne Kingston was a huge success as players lapped up the August sunshine during their 18 holes. Then with the competition on the course over, they then returned to the club house for a three course meal with wine and coffee, whilst the day’s winners were announced. B&H Air Conditioning Services were victorious in the main team event, narrowly

outpointing Site Safety Limited in second place and TGM Electrical in third. There was also a team prize for the yellow ball game, where each member of the team takes it in turns to play the yellow ball at a hole until it is lost. Under the stewardship of Chris Suttle, Suttles of Swanage scooped the prize, whilst Scott Morgan was the winner of the individual best score on count-back with 43 points. To find out more about the events AFC Bournemouth’s commercial department hold, please call 08445761910, or email commercial@afcb.co.uk. n

> AFC BOURNEMOUTH DEVELOPMENT SQUAD

Carmichael sets high standards for new season JOSH CARMICHAEL HOPES THE DEVELOPMENT SQUAD CAN BE COMPETING AT THE TOP END OF THE FINAL THIRD DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE THIS SEASON. The Cherries entered the newly created competition in the summer and opened their campaign with a visit to Luton Town last week. “I’m really looking forward to the league getting underway,” he told Matchday. “It’s the first time the development squad has been involved in a league and I think it will be good for us. “We want to try and win it. We want to win as many games as we can and see how high we end up in the table. “We had a competitive league in the youth team and we’ve gone into the development squad, where we’ve only really been playing friendlies. PAGE 92 / AFC BOURNEMOUTH v ROTHERHAM UNITED 13/09/2014

“When there’s points to play for it means more. You have to deal with winning and losing.

“Playing with people involved in a national squad will always help you improve.

“It will be a competitive division but I think we should be up there. If we do what we do well, then I think we can have a good season.”

“Hopefully I can take that experience into our games and do well.

Carmichael has high hopes for his own development, having enjoyed a relatively injury free pre-season which featured time away at a Scotland Under-20 training camp. “I feel like it has been a good start for me,” he added. “This is my first preseason for two years and it has been good to play games and be involved. “Going away with Scotland was good for me too.

“If I don’t get back in, then at least I have done it and I’m in their thoughts but hopefully I can.” n Stephen Purches’ side started the Final Third Development League with a 5-0 defeat to a strong Luton Town team. Cherries: O’Flaherty, Lee, Muleba, McCarthy, Kaye, Cornick, A Coulibaly, Carmichael (Butcher, 60), Gilkes, Quigley (Surridge, 80), Whitfield.

YOUTH TEAM OUT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE FOR MASON AFC BOURNEMOUTH’S YOUTH TEAM ARE DEFYING THE STEREOTYPE OF MODERN FOOTBALLERS BY SHAVING THEIR HEADS TO RAISE MONEY FOR EB CHARITY DEBRA, AFTER MEETING INSPIRATIONAL LOCAL YOUNGSTER MASON WHITE. Joe Roach, Carl Fletcher and the youth team met five-year-old Mason, who suffers from the uncurable skin condition epidermolysis bullosa (EB), at the end of August and were so moved with his plight that they decided to shave their heads to raise awareness and funds. EB affects around 5,000 people in the UK and means that sufferers are missing the important sticky layer of protein, collagen seven, that binds layers of skin together and as a result, Mason has his skin bandaged up to prevent blistering caused by even the slightest of knocks. “Mason’s Mum came in and spoke to us about him, and we decided to look into some ideas about how we could raise some money and awareness for his condition,” second year scholar Joe Quigley explained. “It was really touching. It got to all the lads and I am sure they will all say it was quite sad. We decided that we wanted to do as much as possible to raise awareness for the condition and help Mason himself.” The boys opened a ‘Just Giving’ page at the end of August, and with donations coming from far and wide, at the time of

PAGE 94 / AFC BOURNEMOUTH v ROTHERHAM UNITED 13/09/2014

writing the total currently stands at over £1,800. “We want to get it up to £5000 now,” second year scholar Matt Butcher added. “We just want to get as many people involved as possible around the club and beyond - to get them to donate and to get the total up. “There has been a knock on effect, our family members are talking about it and then people keep getting involved and donating.” Mason will join the youth team at the home match against Wigan Athletic later in September, and will be introduced on the pitch as the boys bid to raise the profile of the fundraiser even further.

“Our message to the supporters is just that we would like them to help by donating,” first year Henry Lander added. “We want to raise as much money as we can but we also need to raise awareness, to try and find a cure for Mason’s disease. “Or if people want to do it, they should shave their head and put it on social media to raise awareness and try and nominate people to try and get them involved too. The more people that get involved the better.” To donate, please visit bit.ly/TheBigShave. n

> THE FINAL WORD

The Final Word WITH RYAN FRASER

It has been a busy couple of weeks for me, with a lot of travelling, as I have been away on international duty with Scotland. While the rest of the team had some time off after the Norwich game, I went away to meet up with the under-21s. We had our first game on Thursday against Slovakia and we knew before the game that we couldn’t qualify, but we still wanted to win to finish second. We played quite well, and I was buzzing because I scored. I think that was around the 60th minute but then we conceded in the 91st minute, which was a real kick in the teeth. Especially as if Slovakia hadn’t got that point, they wouldn’t have got through. In the end they won the group, which was incredible really, as they beat the Netherlands on Monday night to go through.

I haven’t played up front for Bournemouth, but I am happy to play wherever and I like doing it at international level, as the more positions I can play, the more likely I am to play. I know I am not the biggest player, but I played up front on my own as well, and it can feel lonely at times but it’s a skill I am learning and like I said, I am just happy to play.

I ENJOY GOING AWAY ON INTERNATIONAL DUTY AND I AM THE KIND OF PLAYER THAT NEEDS FOOTBALL TO

IMPROVE.

For me personally I was obviously really pleased to score the goal. I don’t shy away from the fact that goals are something that I would like to add to my game, and something I have worked on closely with the gaffer here. I just used my pace and went through one on one, and then rounded the keeper to score. I have now scored three goals recently for Scotland, but that probably has something to do with the fact that I have been playing up front.

PAGE 104 / AFC BOURNEMOUTH v ROTHERHAM UNITED 13/09/2014

Although I would have obviously liked a break like everybody else, I enjoy going away on international duty and I am the kind of player that needs football to improve. Jason said to me I needed to start being able to play 90 minutes more often and I played virtually all of both games, so going away was huge for me and now I need to use it to kick on at club level.

At the time of writing, I haven’t trained with the lads yet, but I really hope I can be involved in the next two games because after a frustrating pre-season, I feel like I am fit and in good shape now. These are two big games for me, and for the lads, and we will be looking to build on what was a great point at Norwich. n
