Insect control available in one growing media solution

Now with EAMU for peat free growing media

Exemptor is the only systemic insecticide for the control of black vine weevil (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) and other major soil and foliar pests in container-grown ornamentals - both under protection and outside. Exemptor has a broad spectrum of activity against sucking and chewing insects including aphids, glasshouse whitefly, black vine weevil, leaf beetle and sciarid fly. Also Exemptor is not effected by temperature so it provides you with all year round control. Trials show that most plants grown in growing media treated with Exemptor are protected for the entire production cycle. This protection can extend into the distribution chain to the benefit of the retailers and end user.

Exemptor controls all of these pests once incorporated with one application into your growing media

An Advanced Solution for your growing media Exemptor is used as a growing media-incorporation treatment in the raising of all ornamental plants in containers.

• Protects crops which are prone to vine weevil attack • Where spraying or drenching is difficult, unwelcome, undesirable or ineffective

• For protecting crops from potting to sale

• Where pesticide resistance to other products has been experienced

• Where the absence of foliar pests or damage is essential at the point of sale

• For growers wishing to provide the highest quality plants and after-sale service whilst giving protection from foliar pest build-up

Particular market sectors that will benefit from Exemptor use are:

• Container-grown nursery stock (including hardy perennials)

• Pot plants e.g. cyclamen, fuchsia, geranium, pot chrysanthemums and poinsettia

• Bedding plants (especially pot bedding) • Hanging baskets • Also for containerised stock plants

“Here at Howard Nurseries Ltd. we are very pleased with Exemptor and happy with the control it provides in that we have not had any issues with vine weevil, aphids and leaf beetles; the product is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Rates of use

300g or 400g product per cubic metre of growing media dependant on crop. The active ingredient in Exemptor is thiacloprid. Thiacloprid:

• A member of the chloronicotinyl family • A different mode of action to organophosphates,

pyrethroids or carbamates and therefore may break resistance from these “traditional” insecticides

As a result our plants are now even more healthy and vigorous than ever before.”

• Possesses systemic properties; it may be ingested by

sucking and biting insects via the sap, but apart from this stomach effect it also exhibits a contact activity, when insects move around on treated plant surfaces

Gavin Erith, Container Manager, Howard Nurseries Ltd

• An active ingredient with a broad-spectrum activity against sucking and chewing insects (by contact or ingestion via the sap). The spectrum covers two groups of target pests: - The “traditional” insects such as aphids, whiteflies, weevils and now sciarid fly - Leaf beetles including Lily and Viburnum beetles

Profile

1. WILDLIFE Mammals & Birds

Exemptor is not classified as ‘Harmful to game and wildlife’. No risk management is necessary to protect mammals and birds. Exemptor is of low toxicity to mammals and of moderate toxicity to birds. To protect birds the product must be entirely incorporated in the compost. To protect birds remove spillages.

2. BEES

No risk management necessary. The active substance within Exemptor is of low toxicity to bees. There is no requirement to avoid application of Exemptor when bees may be foraging on flowering weeds.

3. NON TARGET INSECTS AND OTHER ANTHROPODS

Exemptor may have adverse effects on some non-target beneficial arthropods, in particular to foliage dwelling predators. However no risk management is necessary. When Exemptor is used in accordance with the label instructions it is unlikely that non-target beneficial arthropods will be adversely affected.

4. AQUATIC LIFE

Exemptor is classified as “VERY TOXIC TO AQUATIC ORGANISMS, MAY CAUSE LONG-TERM ADVERSE EFFECTS IN THE AQUATIC ENVIRONMENT”. However no specific risk management is necessary when the product is used according to label instructions since exposure of aquatic species will limited. Do not contaminate water with the product or its container. Do not clean application equipment near surface water. Avoid contamination via drains from yards and roads. Thiacloprid is very toxic to some sediment dwelling organisms and aquatic invertebrates and moderately toxic to fish and algae. However, no risk management is necessary. When used according to the label instructions there will not be sufficient contamination of water to present a risk to aquatic life. Exemptor must only be used incorporated into compost, therefore the LERAP spray application scheme is not applicable to its use.

5. SOIL AND GROUNDWATER

Thiacloprid is of low persistence in soil and of low mobility. Further investigations under field conditions confirm that in practice there is a low risk to groundwater where Exemptor is used according to the label. No risk management is necessary.

Earthworms

No risk management necessary. Exemptor has been shown to cause no adverse effects on earthworm populations under field conditions

Soil Micro-organisms

Exemptor is of low risk to soil micro-organisms. No risk management necessary in order to prevent risks to the processes of soil respiration and nitrogen turnover.

6. NON-TARGET PLANTS

Thiacloprid has low activity on plants, and consequently Exemptor should have no adverse effect on non-target plants.on non-target plants.

Use plant protection products safely. Always read the label and product information before use. For further product information including warning phrases and symbols refer to www.escience.bayercropscience.co.uk Care must be taken to minimise the risk of surface water contamination from farmyard and field sources. Thiacloprid is safe for honey bees and bumble bees

Thiacloprid - What you need to know Thiacloprid is an insecticide from a new chemical sub-class of neonicotinoids acting on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. It is one of the most effective and widely acting insecticides available to control a wide range of sucking and biting insects. • There are two classes of neonicotinoids,

nitro-substituted and cyano-substituted compounds

• Thiacloprid belongs to the latter class, a 3rd generation neonicotinoid with a low intrinsic toxicity to honey bees, in contrast to other neonicotinoids, such as thiamethoxam, clothianidin or imidacloprid

• Thiacloprid is safe for honey bees and bumble bees to the point that it can be used in openly flowering crops where agronomically appropriate

• There are extensive study packages, which go far

beyond the requirements of the current EU regulatory system, that show the safety of thiacloprid to bees

• Exemptor is mixed into growing media that plants are then grown in. Exemptor cannot be used as a spray or seed treatment and can only be mixed into growing media

• Exemptor is registered to be used in peat based

growing media but now has an Extension of Authorisation for a Minor Use meaning that Exemptor can be incorporated into reduced peat and non-peat based organic growing media

For more information visit Bayer’s bee health website beecare.bayer.com

• Around the world and for many years thiaclopridbased products have been widely used in beeattractive crops, such as oilseed rape

• No field issues for bees in the presence of thiacloprid have been demonstrated and no correlations have been found over many years between honey bee colony losses and the exposure to thiacloprid

• When label instructions are followed, thiacloprid is safe to use and has an excellent (IPM) profile fitting well into resistance management strategies

• Whilst its main usage is in agriculture, where Thiacloprid

also shows good plant compatibility in important agricultural crops including oilseed rape, corn, potatoes, fruits and vegetables, it is used by ornamental growers in the product Exemptor

Did you know... Thiacloprid belongs to a different subclass of neonicotinoids and its use is not impacted by recent announcements regarding further restrictions on the use of neonicotinoids as seed treatments in Europe.
