This is where you spend one-third of your day and that one-third affects the other twothirds. Your bed should be your sanctuary, your sacred place for rest and rejuvenation. And that begins with your mattress. According to a consumer report, you’ve probably logged more than 30,000 hours in your bed, and your mattress has likely become less comfortable and less supportive. Although there is no set formula for determining when you need to replace a mattress, there are several questions you must ask yourself. Do you regularly wake up tired or achy? Do you tend to sleep better away from home, than in your own bed? Does your mattress look or feel saggy? If you answered yes to any of those questions, then it may be time to replace your mattress. There’s no question that mattress shopping can be a hassle. Finding a mattress that is comfortable, durable, affordable, and healthy at a store where you’re dealing with honest educated mattress experts can seem like an insurmountable task to take on. People want to find a bed that is comfortable, durable and healthy. So how do you do you find it? Well, the answer is all in the quality of the materials used to make the mattress, and time and time again the material that seems to always win the durability column is natural latex rubber.

14

SAN DIEGO LIVING • MARCH/APRIL 2016

There are three main reasons people choose a natural latex mattress over an ordinary memory foam or a traditional innerspring mattress. The first one is that natural latex lasts about 2-3 times longer than mattresses that use memory foam or traditional innerspring. This solves the “mattress shopping every few years” annoyance. The second reason is that natural latex is a lot more breathable than traditional foams helping you sleep cooler at night. The third reason is that it’s a natural material, free from any harmful chemicals found in typical mattresses. Not only that, natural latex resists dust mites, mildew and mold and no need to let your new mattress air out for a week because with natural latex you won’t experience any off gassing like you do with memory foam. Latex mattresses are more resilient and supportive than traditional mattresses but still provide pressure relief for those shoulders and hips. If you’ve never tried a latex mattress you’d be surprised how different but comfortable they are. You can find healthy chemical free mattresses at Mattress Makers located at 7919 Silverton Ave. Suite 412, Miramar. They have been making mattresses since 1968 and they use 100% Natural and Organic Latex with a 20 year limited warranty. hether you have an idea in mind as to how you wish your interior looked, or don't have the slightest clue where to start, the eye of a trained professional is the most valuable asset you can have. A beautiful home doesn't just happen—it is the result of good planning, expertise, and is a true reflection of personal style. There are two things that Interior Designers must keep in mind when planning an design project. First, they must listen to the homeowners and simply get to know them. What do they like and dislike? What sorts of style do they tend to gravitate towards? Next, it’s crucial to examine the home itself to determine any possible constraints, and to gain a feel of how the home flows. The Designer can then start to create a look and feel that complements both the home and its owners. This might entail changing an entire mood or vibe of the environment, or upgrading specific materials to completely reinvent the space. The goal is to create a place that the owners can’t wait to get home to—a living area that invites both relaxation and peacefulness. Appropriating a mixture of modern and organic design elements with simple, clean lines, L’Attitude Design is a firm that can bring all of your design dreams to life. omeowners want their homes to resonate with the natural setting. An expansive wall of windows facing a spectacular view integrates the residence with its surroundings. But these open windows can mean extreme sun exposure raising the room temperatures to what some homeowners describe as unbearable. There are films on the market that have a nonexistent appearance offering high heat rejection and clarity while preserving the view. These advanced window films help block UV rays and infrared heat at the source while allowing natural light in, leaving the view virtually unchanged and enhanced. Window shades cost four times more than window films and block that incredible view. Films also protect from pre-mature fading. By blocking 99.9% of the UV rays, furnishings, fabrics and wood are protected from the harmful effects of the sun. And according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, window film is one of several recommended safeguards against UV damage for your skin.

18

SAN DIEGO LIVING • MARCH/APRIL 2016

Window films offer enhanced comfort and protection. They can reject anywhere from 20-84% of the incoming heat keeping the interior considerably cooler, reducing the load on cooling systems, thereby saving energy. Glare from the intense sun is also greatly reduced, sometimes eliminated. NU-VUE Window Films is an authorized 3M Prestige dealer. The 3M Prestige line of films uses non-metallized, multi-layer, optical film and nano-technology to reject up to 97% of the sun’s infrared light, up to 60% of incoming heat. Being nonmetallic, the Prestige Series Films aren’t susceptible to corrosion in coastal environments and will not interfere with electronic device signals. Setting the Prestige Series films apart is the precision with which light waves are controlled as they pass through or reflect off hundreds of layers of film. Compared to other films, the Prestige Series increases their performance at a faster rate as the sun’s angle increases. That means greater protection and comfort when you need it the most. When the sun is working its hardest so is 3Ms Prestige series.

Films that reject heat tend to have high reflectivity. Not with the 3M Prestige Series. These films are optically clear and can offer reflectivity that, in some cases, is lower than glass. That means the same visual clarity inside and out, day and night. The film isn’t noticeable, and it’s doing exactly what it is supposed to do. The house is more comfortable, your interiors are protected, glare is reduced with no maintenance. Most residential films carry a lifetime warranty by the manufacturer and are covered under the HERO and YGRENE programs. Call today for your free in home consultation to see how window films can help improve your home. The professionals at NU-VUE Window Films have been improving San Diego’s windows for almost 30 years. Their services include everything from residential, retail store, and commercial window tinting. They also offer film removal services and free in home consultations. Get a Goodnight’s Sleep, Every Night lthough we spend hours every single day on our mattresses, most people never put much thought into what their body is coming in contact with on a regular basis. Which is perfectly understandable, because your bed is probably not something that comes to mind when considering the possible toxins in your environment. The unfortunate truth is that the average mattress contains an uneasy amount of chemicals. Petroleum based polyurethane foam, synthetic materials, polyester fills, and a variety of other threading and fibers have recently been under scrutiny. However the more recent toxin to enter your sleep space is the addition of flame-retardants since 2008 that contain both arsenic and antimony (III) oxide, which both have suspected carcinogenic potential for humans. Your skin is the largest organ on your body. When you are sleeping on your mattress, your body is also sweating and detoxifying on top of these bothersome chemicals. It’s very frightening to imagine what your skin might be absorbing, every single day. With that being said—if you had the chance to choose between a chemical-laden mattress and a natural mattress, which one would you pick?

ONLINE AT SANDIEGOLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

Most people don’t even realize that natural mattresses are a viable option. Clean and safe for your family, natural mattresses are affordable, not to mention as comfortable and luxurious as some of the top-of-the-line mattresses on the market. The only aspects you will be compromising are the toxic chemicals. Each natural mattress is handcrafted in Southern California using components from Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The ingredients inside each natural mattress include 100% all-natural talalay latex, individual pocketed coil springs, organic cotton, and organic wool—all certified as chemically safe, and absolutely zero toxins. You will never have a more peaceful rest. Scripps Natural Mattress has been selling healthy mattresses since 2001. Along with certified chemically safe mattresses, they also offer organic bedding and pillows. WHY RUGS LEAVE THE HOME TO BE CLEANED By: Lisa Wagner (NIRC Certified Rug Specialist and author of www.RugChick.com)

Gabbeh wool rug BEFORE proper washing

M

any things cause damage to rugs: floods, fires, pets, and moths. But nothing ruins more rugs annually than wall-to-wall carpet cleaning companies. The chemistry, temperature, and techniques for steam cleaning installed synthetic wall-to-wall carpet are the polar opposite of how natural fiber rugs are supposed to be handled. Synthetic carpet is steam cleaned; natural fiber rugs are cold water washed. Most rugs are made of wool and cotton fibers, and should be treated more as fabric than as carpeting. They are to be washed and soaked to gently and thoroughly remove the contaminants, and someone who is skilled with rug fibers, rug dyes, and weaving types from around the world must do this. Here are the biggest reasons why rugs are never to be cleaned in the home. 1.) Dusting Can’t Be Done. Rugs can hold pounds of soil in them before they begin to look dirty. Most wool rugs release between two-and-ten pounds of embedded soil in the dusting process before the wash begins. This absolutely cannot be done in the home, so cleaners who steam clean rugs create an impacted layer of mud in the foundation of these rugs, which leads to a permanent graying of the wool and eventually dry rot in the foundation fibers. 2.) Heat Damages Natural Fibers and Dyes.

20

SAN DIEGO LIVING • MARCH/APRIL 2016

Gabbeh wool rug AFTER proper washing

High heat on natural fibers makes the dyes bleed and breaks wool fibers. You would never wash your wool clothing in hot water and dry it in high heat unless you wanted to ruin it. 3.) Tool Scarring. The metal tools that are safe to use on synthetic plastic fibers are not safe on wool, silk, and cotton rugs. Edges on vacuum tools, and rakes and brushes, can cause permanent pile damage and scarring on rugs. 4.) Heavy Chemical Residue. Fearful of getting the floor under the rug wet, those who clean rugs in the home are not able to rinse out all of the chemicals they put in, and the sticky residue left behind causes damage to the fibers and the dyes. 5.) Mildew and Odors. You cannot run dehumidifiers and high velocity fans in a home. Therefore, most rugs stay damp for too much time, which can lead to musty odors and mildew. 6.) Dirty Fringe. Fringe cannot be cleaned in the home, and usually it’s the fringe that looks the filthiest to begin with. These tassels need to be soaked to get the grime to release. Woven rugs will last several lifetimes if properly cared for. Protect your textile investments by sending them out for a proper wash. Lisa Wagner is a NIRC Certified Rug Specialist and international rug care trainer. Her family company, Blatchford’s Rug Cleaning & Repair, is located at 7848-G Silverton Ave., San Diego 92126. Protecting Your Home From Flood Damage

W

ith the knowledge of El Niño and the forecast of its recordbreaking intensity, it is imperative that homeowners do everything in their power to protect their homes. Utilizing the knowledge of this massive storm and taking direct action is an incredibly wise and responsible thing to do. Here are some tips from the experts about how you can try to prevent any damage to your home when the heavy rain starts falling. Overhanging trees. First, have a landscaper assess your property to determine if any overhanging trees are in any danger zones. Not only can harsh winds blow them over, but also rain can make them heavy, which might lead to breaking branches. The last thing you want is the damage caused by falling and breaking trees going through your roof. Rain gutters. It’s crucial to make sure that rain gutters are cleaned and clear. If your gutters are full, heavy rain can cause the water to back flow underneath your roof tiles and back into your home. Landscaping drains. If you don’t already have landscaping drains, you should probably think about getting them. Excessive water next to your home can cause a number of issues to your property. Lower elevation home. If your house sits lower than the street, you might want to consider having propped drainage installed. Another option is to have sand bags ready in case the drains on your street fail to properly function. Flood insurance. This type of coverage is usually a separate item in your policy. If you don’t already pay for flood insurance and water enters your home when it’s rainy, you might not be covered. Be sure to contact your insurance agent for details.

22

SAN DIEGO LIVING • MARCH/APRIL 2016

If all else fails and you find yourself facing flood damage, you can always call the professionals for their assistance. Water damage removal, water extraction, flood damage removal, and structural dry out services are all available to homeowners in the case of an emergency. There are some important factors to consider when hiring a water damage restoration company. You want to make sure that the company is local, licensed, experienced and also has the right equipment to effectively remove water damage with minimum demolition to your property. A company should use the best drying equipment and the latest techniques to effectively dry out a property, which minimizes the damage that can be caused from tearing down walls and cabinets. Emergency water damage services should be available 24/7, with fast response time. Finally, a company should be willing to work with your insurance company directly to help with filing a claim, making the experience less stressful for you. Christian Brothers Cleaning and Restoration is a local family-owned company that has been serving the San Diego area since 1980. homefashion DRYER FIRES ARE THE #1 HOUSEHOLD DISASTER

Learn How to Prevent Dryer Fires, Save Time and Reduce Your Utility Bill

M

ost homeowners are completely unaware that if unmaintained, a clothes dryer can pose a serious threat to their home and family. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, these seemingly harmless appliances cause an estimated 15,500 fires, 10 deaths and $100,000,000 in damages every year. When you learn how dryer fires happen you will understand how crucial regular dryer maintenance is to your safety. The reason most dryer fires happen is lint. Contrary to popular belief, your lint trap doesn’t catch everything, and this highly combustible material builds up inside your dryer with every load. A tiny spark is the only catalyst this hazard needs to become a full on disaster. The good news is that disaster is easily avoidable. Professional appliance technicians recommend having the inside of your dryer cleaned every three years. Most homeowners are shocked to see the amount of lint that is vacuumed out of their appliance and can instantly recognize the value of this service. A properly functioning dryer should only take 30 to 45 minutes to dry a load of clothes. If your appliance is running slower, this is a telltale sign of dirty dryer vent.

ONLINE AT SANDIEGOLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

Clogged vents prevent heat from escaping the machine, and keep moisture trapped inside your dryer. This means that an unmaintained dryer is not just dangerous; it is also wasting your time and raising your utility bill! Once cleaned, you will notice an instant improvement in drying time and begin saving money right away. If you are past due for a dryer vent cleaning there is no reason to procrastinate any longer, especially with the numerous benefits this service offers. To schedule your dryer vent cleaning, you can call Nick's Dryer Vent Cleaning and Air Duct Cleaning at (760) 533-0783. Clean Your Air Ducts

O

ne of the most important systems in your home is your HVAC system. It allows you to stay cool in the summer and warm in the winter and provides air circulation and ventilation throughout your home. While this system is largely out of sight and out of mind, it is essential to hire a company to complete air duct cleaning on an annual basis. There are several air duct cleaning benefits that you may not have stopped to consider. However, once your HVAC duct system stops working efficiently, you will very quickly begin to realize just how essential this component is to your comfort, health, and even your safety. Allergies, Asthma and Respiratory Problems. When homeowners don’t routinely complete air duct cleaning through a professional service, individuals in the home with any type of respiratory health issues often pay a very

big price. This can include more frequent and severe asthma attacks, increased allergic reactions for those that are sensitive to dust, mold and mildew, and increased illness. By cleaning your ductwork annually dust, mold spores, allergens and contaminants that collect in the ducts are efficiently and effectively removed. Energy Efficiency Boost. When a system is clean and free from dust, debris, and build-up, the airflow is going to be more consistent. This will help heat and cool your home quickly, which means a decrease in energy required to keep the temperature just right. Removing Odors. Even in a very clean and well-maintained home, the inside of your ducts collect dirt, contaminants from the air, spores and pollen and even mildew, mold and bacteria. Over time this can also create odors as the organic material collects in your system. Routine air duct cleaning removes all these contaminants, and also removes related odors. This leaves your home smelling clean and fresh while promoting energy efficiency and good respiratory health. inding a home that requires the same amount of cooling and heating throughout is a challenge. All have unique needs based on the home’s size, windows, doors and even the home’s position towards the sun. Mini split systems offer room-by-room control that can be remotely accessed with a smartphone application. Mini split systems offer homeowners room-by-room control utilizing a network of small, energy-efficient units and thermostats to send the right amount of conditioned air to each zone. The greatest benefit of zoning is the level of customization that can be achieved. You can cool and heat only the zones in use, which not only improves personal comfort, but reduces overall energy consumption and cost. Mini splits consist of an outdoor unit and up to eight indoor units that distribute the air conditioning and heat. The outdoor unit is about half the size of a conventional air conditioning condenser and much quieter during operation. So it will take up less space on your property and make your neighbors much happier. The entire system requires only a 3-inch hole in the wall for installation. Some outdoor units can handle up to eight indoor units,

Smartphone applications control the settings of your system, even when you are on the move, which ensures that energy is not unnecessarily wasted. Whether you’re out for the day at work or for a week on vacation, you can adjust the temperature from wherever you are. This enables you to turn down the cooling or heating while no one is home, which saves you money. Pool Fences Save Lives Are Your Children Safe

D

rowning is a leading cause of death for children under five across the United States. Children move fast, and even though you do your best to watch them, they can get outside and in the pool in that moment you are distracted by the phone, a chore, or the front door. Sixty-nine percent of all drownings occur while a parent was supervising. A pool fence can not only save your child’s life but a neighbors’ children as well. An accessible pool is more dangerous for your toddler than a loaded gun laying out on your coffee table. If there is a momentary lapse of supervision for whatever reason, backup systems are in place. The safety of your family leaves no room for compromise. Adult supervision, locked doors, perimeter door alarms, the pool fence, and swimming lessons; all five must fail before your child can drown in your pool. Removable safety fencing has proven to be a practical and effective barrier against drowning for nearly thirty years. Providing access to your backyard, while isolating the pool from your home. Pool fences should be at least 4 feet high and have a self-closing, self-latching gate that opens away from the pool. The bottom border of the fence material should be flush to your deck to prevent a child from pushing under. The basic principle that keeps pool fence in place is bilateral tension and the fence should be checked periodically to insure that you have benefit of its full function. A standard pool fence is removable in approximately fifteen foot sections. Each section can easily be rolled up and weighs only sixteen pounds. Most fences, however, are never taken down until children in the home are old enough not to require this safe guard any longer.

Pool fence is constructed of see through, texteline mesh mounted on aluminum support poles. The fence is placed into aluminum or plastic sleeves installed into your deck surface. To be a finished product your pool fence mesh should also be bordered on all four sides with vinyl border. Not only does this provide a finished look to your fence but also prevents unraveling of the mesh itself. Pool fence constructed of see-through mesh is not only more aesthetically pleasing, but allows increased visibility for additional safety. Life Saver Systems has manufactured the highest quality mesh pool safety fencing for over 25 years. S

o many homeowners find themselves in a situation where they have a big, beautiful backyard, but only wish that their families would use it more often. One of the greatest assets about living in San Diego is the gorgeous California weather. However, that sunshine unfortunately can’t be enjoyed behind closed doors when the kids choose to sit in front of the TV or computer playing video games. This is where we have to get creative as both homeowners and parents— how can we get everyone outside to enjoy all aspects of the home that we have so proudly invested in? One answer is to create a complete backyard environment that provides endless hours of fun and entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. While trampolines are obviously fun for the small kids, their appeal also extends to the older crowd. As kids grow, they will continue to use a trampoline over the years, making this addition a lasting source of both exercise and fun. AlleyOOP Sports® trampoline enclosures are one of the safest choices on the market, providing a protected space for your kids to jump and go wild.

Restoring MAKES YOUR BARBEQUE SAFER, AND YOUR FOOD TASTE BETTER ust about everyone loves a good outdoor cookout, especially living in Southern California where the weather usually allows for year-round barbeques with friends and family. However, when it comes to cleaning the barbeque, that’s another story. It’s probably safe to say that most grills out there could use a good scrub down. Deep cleaning your barbeque will not only make it sparkle and shine, this procedure also will improve the taste of your food! This procedure removes fat, carbon deposits, and harmful carcinogens that can be transferred to your food. The deep cleaning also removes grease, which will make your outdoor cooking much safer by greatly reducing the chance of grease fires. On top of all of this, barbeque cleaning also prevent future corrosion, protecting your investment and extending the life of your grill. Now that it’s been established that cleaning your barbeque is a great idea, some homeowners might be asking, “Why not do this myself?” A thorough cleaning can be a messy job, and takes around two-and-a-half to three hours to properly execute. Therefore, a mobile barbeque company that can come to your home and utilize their proprietary cleaning system is a wise choice for any homeowner. Skilled technicians are friendly and knowledgeable about all aspects of your grill. They will arrive on time, secure the area around the grill with tarps and towels to protect your property, and then disassemble the grill from top to bottom in order to do a full inspection. They remove all the internal parts, including the cooking grates, heat plates, burners, basting pans, warming rack and hood. Internal parts are taken out to the truck to soak in our dip tank. Professionals will then degrease and sanitize the interior and exterior of the firebox from top to bottom, taking great care to get the finer details. After the body of the grill has been thoroughly cleaned, the hood is also cleaned inside and out, using caution to maintain the integrity of the grain on the stainless steel. During the third stage of this proprietary service, a combination of clean water, degreaser and special power tools are used to refurbish the parts. After the parts have been refurbished, everything is rinsed with water, and the burners are drilled out to make sure gas flow is consistent during cooking. The grill is then reassembled, tested again, and completely polished. For more information on mobile barbeque cleaning, you can contact San Diego BBQ at (858) 605-5777. They operate under the motto “Old grills, new grills, and everything in between,” and their friendly and well-trained staff is there to serve you. San Diego BBQ also sells parts and provides repairs for almost all brands. Common repairs include ignition system overhauls, valve replacement and parts installation. You can see a complete list of their services and prices online at www.sdbbqgrills.com.

businessfinance IMPORTANT TIPS ON FINANCING

a Home Build or Remodel

B

By Aaron Miller

uilding or remodeling a home is an exciting project, yet it certainly can be daunting. From finding the right contractor to picking out plans, and from selecting the right finishes to setting a budget— there’s lots to “get right” before the first nail is pounded. Begin with securing the right financing. With many financing options to choose from today, how do you know which one is right for your project? Start by sitting down in person with more than one lender. This is an important project so it’s worth it to take your time reviewing your options and asking all the questions you want. Don’t be rushed. If a lender doesn’t have time for you at this stage, that’s a red flag. Arm yourself with knowledge. If you are remodeling and have adequate equity in your home before the project begins, a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC) may be right for you. Typically a variable-rate HELOC is good for fast, short-term financing, and it’s a minimal cost to get started. No equity? An “all-in-one” or “single-close” loan may be a better fit because these use the future value with improvements to establish how much you can borrow. Plus, these are typically fixed-rates that provide permanent financing for your mortgage. If you are building, a HELOC is probably not an option. Instead, consider the single close or a two-stage option with a closing for a line of credit to build

38

SAN DIEGO LIVING • MARCH/APRIL 2016

and a refinance at the end. Both are solutions for building the home but each has a unique set of advantages and disadvantages to explore with your lender. Whatever you choose, keep an eye on several important factors: understand your options for fixed- and variable-rates; all costs and fees; how long you have to complete the project; and how the inspections for draw disbursement will be handled. It’s important to know all of this before choosing your lender so you protect your interests while allowing your contractor to work unfettered from delays. Building or remodeling your home can be a great experience, but just like your house, this project requires you start with a good foundation— financing. ARE YOU MAKING

VALUE A PRIORITY?

W

hen it comes to making a purchase, whether you are buying something as small as a new chair or as large as a kitchen remodel, people tend to gravitate towards the lowest price. The fact of the matter is, who doesn’t want to save some money? There is an exciting thrill that comes with the concept of getting a bargain that seems to be ingrained in all human beings. However, succumbing to that thrill without giving your purchase any critical thought might end up being a choice that can completely negate your savings later on down the line. Here’s why. A low price tag almost always equals a low-quality item or service, no matter how you look at it. In order to achieve such a low cost on something, it’s almost guaranteed that corners have been cut to get there. During the recession, many people got used to low prices because businesses were simply trying to survive. But now, it’s crucial to recognize that the economy is showing stable improvement. Because of this, if you are a smart shopper, you

ONLINE AT SANDIEGOLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

have most likely started to become extremely cautious of the price that seems suspiciously low. Also, low prices oftentimes reflect a cheaply crafted product from overseas that can result in a short life span. The solution is simple: do the research before jumping at the sight of an attractive price tag. Always remember to prioritize both value and quality way above bargain because these are the factors that will guide you along the path to choosing a sound investment. Pay attention to the aspects that prove a company cares, such as customer service, honesty, and having pride in their product. Make sure you have an actual relationship with a company to ensure they are going to be there in a few years to take care of any future work. Information and education go a long way, and you will always experience peace of mind knowing that you made a confident decision. In the end, the lowest price more often than not becomes the highest price—it just might take some time to get there.

Reshape Your Body in 20 Minutes! By John Colman

When Diane Rand reached age 50, she got concerned that her weight was slowly creeping higher and her clothes were feeling too tight. As a practicing physician in San Diego, she knew the diagnosis. “Your muscles atrophy as you age, and this slows down the metabolism,” says Rand. “I knew it would keep getting worse if I didn’t correct it.” The antidote? Effective weight training. But, she’d never lifted weights before. Plus, her fulltime job as a physician as well as her family life left little time in her schedule for exercise. Fortunately, Diane read an article about “slow-motion” strength training, a revolutionary new exercise method promising a firmer, stronger, more shapely body from just two 20-minute training sessions per week. Even though the time efficiency and results sounded almost too good to be true, she decided to enroll with a personal trainer at The Perfect Workout, a local company with dozens of private fitness studios specializing in this unique approach. Right away she noticed immediate increases in her muscle tone and energy. After several months she’d also dropped one to two clothing sizes and was fitting into clothes which used to be too small. “My trainer pushes me in a safe way, and I walk away feeling great after each session,” says Diane. “This is the wave of the future.”

Lean Muscles—The Key To Reshaping Your Body The Perfect Workout’s trainers encourage clients to build lean muscle tissue, which increases the body’s metabolism, burning extra calories even while you’re sleeping. Many people—especially women—have a fear of “bulking up” like a

bodybuilder if they were to start strength training. In reality, if you’re older than 25, it’s much more likely that too little muscle is the problem rather than too much muscle. In their book Biomarkers: The 10 Keys to Prolonging Vitality , William Evans, Ph.D., and Irwin Rosenberg, M.D., show the research demonstrating that adults who don’t strength train lose an average of a half pound of lean muscle tissue each year starting at age 25. As an example, a typical 55-year-old woman will have 15 pounds less lean muscle (and significantly more fat) than what she had at age 25. Muscle takes up less space than fat, so this typical

55-year-old woman has arms and thighs that are softer and less firm, wears a larger clothing size, and has a slower metabolism that burns fewer calories each day. Effective strength training changes all of this. It increases your body’s metabolism, causing you to burn more fat and calories all day long. Strength training reshapes and tones your legs and arms. And since muscle takes up 20% less space than fat, adding muscle and losing fat will make your body firmer, smaller, and more shapely. A fit 140-pound person can wear clothes several sizes smaller than an out of shape 140-pound person. ONLINE AT SANDIEGOLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

healthbeautyfitness How Can Slow-Motion Strength Training Work So Quickly? Slow-motion strength training involves brief and demanding workouts to get great results. The basic concept? Lift relatively heavy weights excruciatingly slowly (10 seconds to lift, another 10 seconds to lower) for as many repetitions as you can until you’re unable to move the weights anymore. And when you learn to challenge your muscles as deeply as a skilled trainer can teach, it’s impossible to workout much longer than 20 minutes, even if you try. Dr. Philip Alexander, physician and faculty member at Texas A&M University’s College of Medicine, explains that it’s the intensity of exercise that stimulates greatest changes. “A slower repetition loads the muscles more effectively and efficiently. It’s harder!” exclaims Alexander. “That’s why it stimulates such a great total response from the body.” Dr. Alexander has tracked hundreds of subjects using slow-motion strength training, noting significant improvements in muscular strength, HDL cholesterol profiles, bone density, and glucose tolerance. Other research adds more supporting data. Two separate studies by Wayne Westcott, Ph.D., and one study by Ellington Darden, Ph.D., demonstrate that slow-motion strength training produces 50% to 59% faster improvements than regular weight training. And because the repetitions are harder, each training session must be limited to 20 minutes—making this exercise method quite time efficient.

In 3 months Justin Brunette dropped 4 inches from his waist and lowered his body fat percentage by 6.4% with effective nutrition and weekly 20-minute training sessions at The Perfect Workout.

Joyce Reclaims Her Youthful Figure 54-year-old Joyce Magnuson had always been slim and slender when she was younger. But in her mid 40s, life’s stresses caught up with her and she began gaining weight. “During the next few years, I kept getting heavier, until I was thoroughly broken and disgusted with myself,” says Joyce. Fortunately, she happened to read an article about slow-motion strength training and how it would reshape her body with just two 20-minute training sessions per week. The effectiveness of the method made sense to Joyce, and she decided to enroll with a personal trainer at The Perfect Workout. ONLINE AT SANDIEGOLIVINGMAGAZINE.COM

In 3 months Laura Retana Shelp lost 23.4 pounds and 10 inches off her waist with improved nutrition and two 20-minute training sessions a week at The Perfect Workout. After five months of combining an effective nutrition plan with two 20minute training sessions each week, not only had she gotten stronger, she’d lost 43 pounds and dropped from a size 16 to a size 10. She was also able to get completely off the blood pressure medications that she’d previously needed to take. She adds, “The perk is looking good in the current styles. Even Macy’s keeps me motivated to stay fit!”

Where does stress live? Stress lives the brain stem as a maladaptive fight/flight/freeze response that’s transmitted to the body via the vagus nerve. Soothing this response with mindfulness or talk therapy could take years, medications carry potentially dangerous side effects, and alcohol use may lead to addiction. Eyebrows are one of the most common choices for women looking to reduce their morning routine and find the perfect look for their face. Carefully sculpted permanent eyebrows can open up your face and make you look years younger. Utilizing a unique hair stroke method, your brows will look unbelievably natural once the process is finished. The end result is gorgeous maintenancefree eyebrows that will never smudge off or perspire away. Another popular permanent makeup choice is eyeliner. Imagine having eyeliner that is perfectly even, every single day. Permanent eyeliner applied by professionals can be soft and natural in appearance, or it can be more bold and artistic, for a dramatic look. You can work out, sleep, and shower, and it will never run or start to turn blue or gray. Lips are another great facial aspect where permanent makeup professionals can work their magic. You can choose from lip liner, a naturally blended lip liner, or even full lip color—all you’ll need is some tinted lip-gloss, and not one person will suspect that you

weren’t born with those beautiful lips. Aside from giving your lips some permanent style and color, permanent lip makeup can also give your lips a fuller look without the need for Botox® or other lip injections. Along with the factors of saving time in the morning and money on cosmetics, permanent makeup is also an ideal option for people that constantly battle allergies from traditional cosmetics.
