Craig has been a Supported Employee at Afford’s Prestons Australian Disability Enterprise (ADE) for 10 years. For years he has enjoyed his work at Prestons which involved packing and labelling but as time progressed and Craig got older, Afford Prestons staff realised that Craig sought more and needed a change to bring back his zest for life.

Under a grant provided by the Department of Social Services, Afford’s NDIS Support Officers have been working to find suitable supports for Craig outside of supported employment. During his NDIS Planning process, his Support Coordinator was able to work with Craig’s brother and group home to arrange trial activities at Canley Vale Lifestyle Centre. Thanks to the support of Afford, Craig has now retired at 58 years old and is now an active and happy member of Canley Vale Lifestyle Centre where he enjoys the social and recreational activities it offers. After his transition from ADE work into an afford Lifestyle Centre, Craig is living his life how he wants, doing activities he enjoys and is experiencing greater fulfilment and meaning in his life.

Alistair’s Goals Set Sail Alistair is a client at our Ashfield Lifestyle Centre who has always dreamed of taking part in a sailing experience. Afford’s staff realised this was one of Alistair’s life goals and put the wheels in motion for Alistair to join the Sailability Program and on Wednesday, 24 January this year, Alistair’s dream became a reality as he was invited to take part in the Sailability Program at Manly Yacht Club, hosted by volunteers. Every effort was made to provide a stress free travel environment for Alistair, so priority was given to seating in the van to reduce the noisiness of the trip to their destination. As soon as he arrived at Manly Cove, Alistair’s face lit up. He looked super relaxed, sitting back in the shade, appearing to enjoy viewing the spectacular bay and beach surrounds. The Cove had lots of activity for Alistair to observe, such as children swimming, stand up paddle boarders, loads of boats and Sydney Ferry commutes. The very friendly, competent sailors, assisted Alistair into the two man sailing boat “Ing”, which had just been fitted with new sails. He had no hesitation in becoming a shipmate onboard. As the wind filled the new sails, the boat took off and Alistair was checking out the sails and having a truly sensory experience. There was quite a breeze and, thankfully, Alistair returned to shore with his hat still on. After all of the group had participated in their sailing experiences, everyone gathered at a shaded table overlooking the sandy beach to eat lunch together before returning to the Lifestyle Centre. Congratulations Alastair on reaching your sailing participation goal!

TTW Tune Into Hope Transition to Work (TTW) Trainees were recently lucky enough to attend an Industry Visit at Hope Radio Station! All were very fortunate to get an amazing tour around the studio, meet some of the different people who worked there and learn about their roles. Everyone also had the chance to see some of the very cool equipment that is used in a radio station, watch a radio show being broadcast, and even have a look inside a performance studio. The day was made even better when the lovely staff at Hope Radio surprised the Afford TTW trainees with a delicious morning tea of muffins and soft drink, complemented with a video about the Hope Radio Workplace, what they do at the station, and why. Trainees listened to a very interesting speech given by the Radio Producer, Tom Ford, about how he became involved in his job at Hope and the ways in which radio shows are put together. Trainees quickly learnt that a radio station is very much a team effort, with lots of different divisions coming together to help the station run smoothly and effectively. There was then an opportunity for trainees to ask questions - and they took full advantage, asking about the types of music played at Hope, the number of radio stations in Sydney, and why Tom himself chose to work there. It was amazing to see the Afford TTW trainees participating so enthusiastically and taking a real interest in the behind the scenes workings of a radio station. On the way out trainees were given a Hope Radio Show bag, complete with a Hope drink bottle, pamphlets, lollies, and a very snazzy Hope Radio Hat!!
