Last Friday, 4 May, Afford held its Annual Golf Day at Twin Creeks Golf Club in Luddenham. The sunshine was beaming and Afford Supporters came out in full force to support Afford. Over 100 players attended the event, with the day featuring a number of fun events including: a ‘Beat the Pro’ round, 18 holes of golf involving a special ‘survival ball’ and a very fun ball station hole, team skins event, another four secret holes, a delicious lunch, raffles, silent auction, and of course, the trophy presentation. Rob Richards was the MC and host for the day, who offered his witty charm and 30 years of golf expertise to ensure that everyone had an amazing time and the day went off without a hitch.

With the event’s growing reputation and the beautiful weather attracting a large number of business representatives from across Sydney, Afford was able to raise $70,000 - all going towards Afford’s great new services, such as Allied Health, and to provide above-and-beyond offerings throughout Afford Lifestyle Centres. This is the 11th year that the Afford Golf Day has been staged and it would not be possible without months of work from Afford’s Events Team - Rhiannon O’Brien, Toni Preston and Cristina Alvarez - who were assisted by fantastic volunteers like Megan Campbell from Raffles and Afford staff. The 11th year of the event was celebrated with a secret sixth hole - “The Terry O’Brien Hole”. Terry and Rob have been instrumental in the running of the Afford Golf Day for the past eight years. We are sad to say that Terry passed away last year, but his legacy will always live on with a perpetual trophy that will be displayed at Afford Head Office for years to come. Continued Pg. 3

As part of the program, clients are picked up via an Afford branded van and then driven to a grocery shop. Clients are given a list of ingredients which need to be purchased. On their latest shop, the group were able to finding what they needed with great success. After shopping, clients then return to the Centre and start to gather utensils and dishes that they need to begin preparing their meal. For their most recent meal, lasagne was on the menu! Clients enjoyed the process of layering their individual lasagne and were able to customise their likes and dislikes. For example, if someone did not like the béchamel sauce, they would apply only a thin layer. Once all the lasagne was prepared in the individual baking dishes, some of the clients set the table, placing the tablecloth, dinner plates, cutlery, and cups on the table. Other clients cleaned up the dirty dishes from food preparation. The clients put their copy of the recipe in their folders and spent time chatting about what they had done and how much they were looking forward to eating their creations, whilst waiting for the food to cook. When the food was ready, all clients grabbed a drink and ate their food at the tables and enjoyed socialising while they ate. Everyone enjoyed their meals and afterwards, they carried their dirty dishes to the kitchen and helped with kitchen cleaning duties. The next dish... Chicken Stir Fry! We can’t wait!

Annual Golf Day A Hole In One Cont. There are many Afford Supporters who sponsored or donated prizes this year. Without their ongoing support and generosity, events like this would not be the same. Major sponsors of this year’s event were Penrith Panthers, Livingstone, Rogers Construction Group and Clintons Toyota. There were also many businesses who unfortunately could not attend this great event, but helped by donating just under $10,000 worth of prizes such as signed memorabilia from the West Tigers, Penrith Panthers and NSW Cricket, as well as Milwaukee tools, go-karting experiences and more. Well done to everyone and we look forward to the fun in store for next year.

Huge Smiles At Luna Park Afford Respite is a great opportunity for clients to take some time out to relax and simply enjoy spending time with friends. Recently, Respite clients enjoyed a day out at Luna Park in Sydney. With Opal cards in hand, everyone set off to Campbelltown train station to catch the train into the city. When they reached their destination at Circular Quay station, everyone hopped off the train and walked across Sydney’s iconic Harbour Bridge - which is an experience in itself. Once across the bridge, the group was greeted by the big smile of the face of Luna Park and that’s when the real excitement began to rise. As the group stepped inside the gates, their enthusiasm to get started was obvious. Everyone enjoyed taking in all that Luna Park has to offer and had lunch by the water under the mouth at Luna Park. It was an amazing experience for all and was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to let their hair down and simply enjoy life.

Afford Driving Success Afford has over 100 branded vehicles representing Afford on our roads every day. Over the course of a year, Afford branded vans travel more than 1.5 million kilometres to provide clients with access to community activities, programs and disability supports. Every day, Afford vans are on the roads of Sydney shouting out with colour and vibrancy that Afford is a friendly and supportive service that can help clients explore their potential and reach their personal and life goals. Because our vans are so visible, day-in and day-out, we need to ensure that they are being well cared for and cleaned. We are so pleased to hear that the clients at Afford Windsor Lifestyle Centre are also taking on the responsibility of cleaning the vans to make sure they look spick and span when on the road. At Windsor Lifestyle Centre, everyone works as a team and everyone - staff and clients alike - understand the importance of working together to strive for the same goal. The clients at Windsor Lifestyle Centre say that they take pride in keeping their Centre’s vehicles clean and are proud to travel in them when out in the community. Well done team!!
