CARING ABOUT OUR STAFF
OUR FIRST AFFORD ACADEMY MILESTONE
In This Issue
Another huge milestone was achieved last week, with our first group of Afford Academy trainees starting their intensive training program. The program was created internally and targeted to new leaders moving up across our business. Affordians who attended the program absolutely loved it and the feedback we have already started receiving has been phenomenal. One of the Team Leaders who attended the first session was so impressed they wanted to share their experience and highlights from their training:

I think what you have implemented here to teach new team leaders is absolutely amazing and I wish this had been available to me, even though I was fortunate to have someone who was an excellent TL.

Even after doing this job for just under two years, I found the Academy helpful to myself, as there are areas of the job that I find come easily, but other areas which I still find a challenge. There were also things that I didn’t know or felt I didn’t have a proper understanding of but learning in a small group instead of having things explained via a teleconference call or email was extremely helpful.
Upcoming Events Trivia Answer
I enjoyed listening to Joy speak on the first day, I found it very inspiring and some things she said during her talk about mindset, attitude, solution-focused, accountability and ownership, responsibility etc. I found it very interesting and helpful. It’s good to listen to people with a lot of experience and learn from them, there is always something you can take from their experience. Joy is a wealth of knowledge and we can learn a lot from her on how to manage our sites effectively, It was extremely informative. The presenters were great and had a wealth of knowledge of the subjects they presented I want to thank Joy, Kiralee and all the presenters, as the training was excellent and the manuals are amazing and extremely helpful.” For future attendees, a hot tip from our trainee - “I would recommend that future students take up the available accommodation for the week due to the amount of information you need to process, and homework required. I found it hard to complete the homework when I returned home and needed to be in parent mode.” Congratulations to those who were our first Afford Academy attendees, you have become part of Afford history!

AFFORD PROVIDES THE PLATFORM TO NETWORK
Recently Miami Day Program held a networking event at their hub in a bid to connect our Customer Care Managers with the local Support Coordinators in the community. Networking with external support coordinators is so important because they impartially refer clients to any organisation or NDIS service. It is so crucial for external support coordinators to see Afford facilities for themselves and witness the award-winning supports and services we offer in our day programs. Once they see our programs in action, they can confidently refer their clients to Afford knowing they really are getting the best services and support available to them. Miami staff held their morning tea for support coordinators on a Tuesday morning in late-July, which was a fantastic success! The day was organised by Miami Customer Care Manager, Louise Connelly, due to COVID-19 putting a stop to their open day earlier in the year. “Based on feedback from our guests today, I’m confident we’ll see an amazing stream of referrals come our way,” said Louise Connelly CCM. Approximately 25 support coordinators attended the networking event, which were all new connections. The attendees were extremely impressed with not only the look and feel of the hub, but more importantly, the team. Not surprising as we have the besttrained staff in the sector! “This was a roaring success!!! Thank you for all your hard work making this day happen Louise and to Jelena and the rest of the team for giving the site the happy vibes and smiles all round. Looking forward to filling this site SOON!!”, Sulett Van Wyk, State Manager Customer Care excitingly, emailed the team after the event. “It was a much better turn out than expected!! Such a great vibe!!!”, said Jelena Bekic, Miami Team Leader.

Staff Matters WELLINGTON POINT DAY PROGRAM OPEN DAY
Recently our Wellington Point Day Program in Queensland held an Open Day to celebrate the rebranding of the new site. They succeeded in raising awareness in the community about our awardwinning services and supports available in their area. We welcomed many special guests on the day including Local Councillor, Wendy Boglary, who was so impressed by the event and the services we offer, she shared pictures on her Facebook page from the day! Other special attendees included, Katie Bolton, Home Instead Senior Care Client Service Manager and Byron Shreeve Redlands Council Safety Officer, Rob Spencer, Star Community Services Chairman and Chairman of Redlands Disability Network and Tracey-lee Napier, Community Engagement Officer from Real Communities and Fresh Futures Logan Chairperson. “I would like to add, how much effort and commitment that the Wellington Point team leader and seniors put into this event and how truly proud I am to be part of their team,” said Carolyn Johnston the Wellington Point Customer Care Manager. Wellington Point Day Program is another great merger success story, with Afford acquiring Redlands Respite in early 2019 the site has now blossomed into an incredible Afford Day Program, under the guidance of Executive Manager Client Services QLD, Allan Sio! The day program recently had some new signage installed to refresh the site in addition to the signage that was installed back in 2019. The new signage featured a birthday tree, Afford logo, a new door featuring the iconic we heart NDIS logo and some cranes decorating some dull looking windows. The Afford design flair is well known across our sites and is what sets us apart from our competitors. The team at Wellington Point are always looking into new initiatives, events and more to make sure that the wider community are aware of our services.
Reminder! Staff please be reminded about the importance of the following: • Please note that all New South Wales and Victorian staff need to wear masks while working – inside and outside. This is in line with this morning’s announcements for NSW – it nominated Western Suburbs but for certainty we request all staff in NSW to comply. Victoria had already moved to this point. If you have any doubts or issues with stock please discuss with your Team Leader or Manager.
