On the 1st July, 2015, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), opened the country’s very first shop front - the Nepean Blue Mountains NDIS shop front and the event was attended by one of our AFFORD board members, Ross Fowler. The launch of the opening was attended by NSW Minister for Disability Services, John Ajaka and Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, who cut the ribbon along with the Mayor of Penrith Cr Ross Fowler OAM, NDIA CEO David Bowen and local Western Sydney mother, Erin Kester and her family. In addition to being the Mayor of Penrith, Ross Fowler is also one of our long serving AFFORD board members. The Nepean Blue Mountains shop front will offer important information about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for people with disability and their families.

Thanks to grant funding from Bankstown Sports Club, a garden was recently planted at Condell Park Day Program. A Garden Therapist funded by the grant assisted the clients through education and hands on learning. Condell Park customers have planted and nurtured seasonal herbs and vegetables to use as part of their cooking programs. There is also a raised garden bed which allows customers in wheel chairs to participate.

If you had the power what would you change about the world: I would make sure that every child in this world was safe and happy

The Condell Park customers have really enjoyed tending to the garden and last month they harvested the first head of broccoli, baby egg plants (the last of the season), bok choy, ginger, parsley and basil. Staff and clients have really been cooking up a storm, proudly using the ingredients they have grown for some delicious lunches.

TTW at Dulwich Hill Our Transition To Work Trainers run the AFFORD Work Skills Program and recently staff member Judy Bennett ran the program for some students at Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design. Judy adjusts the programs to suit the students’ learning needs so the students are engaged and enjoy the concepts explored, reinforcing their knowledge and understanding of work education and experience. Dulwich High are already looking forward to the next year’s program. To the left is a photo of the senior class who all thoroughly enjoyed their class with Judy.

Henny Penny Program Jamisontown Day Program have recently been hosting a Henny Penny chicken program. 14 eggs were delivered in an incubator and both customers and staff watched them hatch. Customers were very excited as they got to name all 14 of the tiny chicks and they are now enjoying caring for the baby chickens. All the customers are loving the animal care program which has proved to be a hit with everyone at Jamisontown. In the photo on the right, Day Program customer Cain Edmunds is pictured with one of the baby chickens named ‘Butter’.

Judy also got a special mention from Faith Galang, Senior Support teacher at Dulwich High who praised her work with the students

Minchinbury Welcome Staff On Thursday last week many staff at Prestons and Liverpool packed up all their offices into boxes and made the move to Head Office at Minchinbury. Boxes and furniture abounded on moving day with items crammed into every available space. Minchinbury staff were pleased to welcome some familiar faces to the office and an afternoon tea was held to welcome staff last Friday. Food for the afternoon tea was supplied by Brian and the Healthy Lifestyles team from the factory at Minchinbury so a huge thanks goes to them for organising the beautiful food. “Best sausage rolls in Australia! Of course a photo (almost a selfie) was taken of the fabulous food and the staff enjoying it is shown on the right.
