AFFORD are proud to announce that two of our four DES sites have been awarded a 5 star rating by the Department of Social Services. The star ratings system measures the relative success of providers in achieving an outcome for customers participating in the program. Ratings are from one to five stars, with one being the lowest and five being the highest achievement. The AFFORD Fairfield and Bankstown DES sites have achieved an outstanding rating of 5 stars, followed by Liverpool who achieved a 4 star rating and Blacktown who achieved a 3 star rating. While it is wonderful to receive the recognition from the Department for the work undertaken by our sites, the important thing is that the star ratings recognise the incredible results achieved by AFFORD consultants who work really hard to source employment opportunities and create a sense of achievement and purpose for our customers which improves their quality of life. Congratulations to the teams at Fairfield and Bankstown for achieving a 5 star rating.

Ashfield Day Program added an outdoor pergola to the backyard of their site 12 months ago and thanks to a Community Building Partnerships Grant some outdoor furniture was purchased to compliment the undercover BBQ area.

Each week Ashfield holds an in house BBQ, and at times they are joined by other sites. The customers accessing the site thoroughly enjoy the social aspect of having a BBQ lunch with their friends, as well as friends from other sites. The outdoor furniture allows them to accommodate larger groups of people and to further extend their programs to other sites across AFFORD. After the BBQ lunch, they are joined by a music therapist, and in the warmer weather music sessions are held outside. Recently, a client that has attended Ashfield Day Program for many years had a birthday and his parents offered to come to Ashfield and cook a BBQ lunch for all of the staff and clients. On the day Ashfield had around 40 people on site for this birthday party, and the additional furniture allowed them to accommodate for a large number of people. Ashfield regularly engages in fundraising events involving morning teas, and are fortunate to have many attend these functions and to have a well equipped and functional outdoor area to support their events. The grant also allowed for the purchase of a hoist to assist with lifting clients for personal care requirements.

Daffodil Day for Condell Park August 28th was Daffodil Day and the team at Condell Park Day Program showed their community spirit by hosting a Daffodil Day stall at Bankstown Hospital. The Condell Park team sold merchandise such as teddy bears, pens, fridge magnets, pins and of course fresh daffodils. Both staff and customers had so much fun on the day with everyone really getting into the spirit of the event and enjoying the positive interactions with the local community whilst utilising money handling skills. The team raised $1852 for the Cancer Council beating last years total by over $400 which was an outstanding effort. Thanks to Paul Mitchell and the team at Condell Park for organising another successful event. Condell Park Day Program look forward to hosting a stall again next year and they will be hosting a Pink Ribbon day stall at the hospital in November as they did last year.
