AFFORD Respite hosted their first supported holiday last week and it was an outstanding success. Tammy Mills organised the holiday, which was a supported cruise involving a 5 day cruise to Moreton Island on P&O Pacific Jewel from 3rd Sept to 7 Sept 2015. This was a fantastic opportunity for our customers to experience something most people take for granted in going on a holiday with their friends while still being supported in their everyday activities. It was also an opportunity for the families and carers to receive some well deserved respite. As you can see from the photo everyone had an absolute ball on the cruise. Tammy received lots of great stories from the clients on board and they were all grinning ear from ear when talking about what they did on the cruise. AFFORD staff even had parents on board approach them for contact details as they wanted their loved one to have a experience like our customers. This is the first of many different and exciting AFFORD supported holidays we have planned for the future - the next one is a supported holiday to Canberra.

The August Customer Service Awards have come around again quickly! This month we had 21 nominations, an increase from 15 last month. The winner was Rhiannon O’Brien, Fundraising and Events Manager who was nominated three times! The nomination details for Rhiannon were for organising successful grant funding and being a great support to team leaders and coordinators. She is always approachable, friendly and takes the time to go out of her way to help. She is a phenomenal representative for AFFORD and we would not get as many opportunities without the name she has in the disability network. Ruchi Desai, Assistant Accountant received second place and was nominated twice for outstanding customer service and taking the time to explain processes. Ruchi goes above and beyond to ensure all support and assistance is provided in understanding how accounts are generated. She has been an integral part of supporting sites in reducing outstanding debtor balances. Third place was a tie between Robert Mauceri, Coordinator Ashfield and Lakemba and Ilaisaane Ngalu, Lifestyle Assistant Respite. Illaisaane was nominated for going above and beyond every day she works with clients through ensuring she works in a customer focused way. Robert was nominated because of his passion for new projects in order to fulfil customers’ goals. Other nominations for August included: Judy Bennett - TTW Vocational Trainer, Debra Paterson - Senior Lifestyle Assistant Canley Vale, Foad Ichrakie - Employment Consultant Fairfield, Ibrahim Sesay Lifestyle Assistant Lakemba, Paul Mitchell - Team Leader Condell Park, Deb Fucci - Marketing Coordinator, Grace Ciempka - Employment Consultant Blacktown, Mark Schwenke - Team Leader Liverpool, Suzette Montana - Lifestyle Assistant Cherrywood, Kirstin O’Keefe - Coordinator Campbelltown and Canley Vale, Kim French - Coordinator Blacktown and Kings Park, Angelo Buenaflor - Supervisor Ingleburn Factory. Once again it is fantastic to see all the nominations coming in and we would love to improve on the number of nominations for September. Don’t forget to nominate the everyday heroes of AFFORD.

Guildford Open Day and NDIS Session Guildford Day Program held their open day on the 31st August which was followed by an NDIS information night and carers dinner starting at 5.30pm. They were very fortunate to have a good attendance on the night. Deborah Roberts held the NDIS presentation where carers could ask many questions and raise any concerns they may have with the NDIS fast approaching. After the presentation, everyone joined together to share an amazing dinner put together by Guildford staff. It was really pleasing to see how the carers all enjoyed each other’s company. There was much laughter among the guests, which is probably why the last of the carers didn’t leave until 8.30pm.

Hamper of Hope The latest exciting initiative for AFFORD is the Hamper of Hope which is full of goodies for Christmas. The Hamper of Hope consists of products made by other Australian Disability Enterprises (ADE’s), packed by employees at our Australian Foundation for Disability Minchinbury factory. The hamper is ideal for a Christmas present for staff, customers, family and friends and it provides meaningful supported employment for people with a disability. The Hamper of Hope has a website and also a Facebook page - visit www.hamperofhope.com for more information and to order. Feel free to like the Facebook page and spread the word amongst your friends and family to help AFFORD make this a really successful endeavour. Buy a hamper today!

A huge thank you goes to Nancy Elnajar for helping out with open day, to Deborah Roberts for the great presentation and to the wonderful team at Guildford for putting together an amazing feast. Some staff had put in a 13 hour day which was all worth the effort.

Father’s Day Breakie a hit at Jamisontown Jamisontown Day Program held a Father’s Day breakfast last Friday which was a big hit. They had a total of 7 families attend the event and everyone enjoyed a delicious buffet breakfast with hot and cold options. On the right is a photo of one group of families enjoying the breakfast, a catch up chat and the opportunity to take time out of their busy routine to relax and enjoy the morning.
