Page 4 This week our first Afford Getaway took place with 15 clients and 4 supported employees taking off on a 5 day adventure to the Gold Coast. The holiday included trademark Gold Coast locations including Wet n Wild, Sea World and Movie World. For all of these clients this was a trip to remember with some experiencing their first trip as an independent adult, and for others this was their first time on a plane. Afford Getaways aims to tailor make holidays for our clients giving them the opportunity to go on the holidays they have always dreamed of and create new memories through new experiences with friends and family. A big thankyou goes to all staff involved in making our first trip as Afford Getaways a success. Our clients loved soaking the holiday fun and look forward to the next adventure!

Kenny Richards is a resident at our Cherrywood village who was one of the first clients to be introduced to the Afford Transition to Retirement program. Since joining in 2011 Kenny has become very active within his local community. With passions in a number of areas including aviation and general knowledge Kenny was stuck wondering what he might do when it came time for him to finish work all together. After consulting with his Transition to Retirement Coordinator, Kenny was introduced to community groups and activities connecting him with people who share the same interests. Kenny spent his time volunteering at the Australian Aviation Museum weeding and keeping the grounds tidy but always wanted to do more for his local community. With guidance from his Transition to Retirement Coordinator Kenny later joined the Penrith Community Men’s Shed. During his time at the Men’s Shed Kenny tirelessly contributed to give back to his local community that has given him so much over the years. As a result of his hard work Kenny has starred in the recent Western Weekender newspaper, where he talks about his role painting and giving out, hand crafted toys to the Nepean Hospital’s Children’s Ward just in time for Christmas. The extreme generosity of everyone including Kenny at the Penrith Community Men’s Shed was certainly welcomed with big smiles by the kids in hospital and their parents, with many in the Children’s Ward facing the prospect of spending the holidays in hospital. This is another great example of how our Afford TTR program provide many opportunities for our clients to participate in their passions as they transition to life after work and also help better others within their local community. Well done Kenny!
