As a result of Afford Belmore’s reputation in the Canterbury Area as well as links within the community the Lifestyle Centre was asked to host a workshop facilitated by performer and choreographer Caroline Bowditch. Clients from Belmore and a number of other organisations who visited the site had a great time participating in the dance theatre workshop learning different moves with assistance from professional dancers and interpreters. The workshops were offered as part of Caroline Bowditch’s Falling In Love with Frida Australia tour, which is based on Universal Design in dance and performance pioneered by Jürg Koch at the University of Washington, Seattle and tells the tale of the reclaiming of a disabled artist, a love like obsession and an enquiry into how we shape what we are remembered for. This event is only one of many examples of the reputation Belmore Lifestyle Centre has built within the local community as well as the important role that they have in providing services to people with a disability within the area, well done guys and keep up the great work!

Fun Fact A flea can jump up to 200 times its own height. That is the equivalent of a human jumping the Empire State Building.

Afford Eager To Fight The Flu This Winter

Over the past 5 weeks 197 staff and employees have undergone flu vaccinations in a fight to stay healthy this winter. Vaccinators were surprised as statistics show only 15% of employees take up the flu vaccinations, however Afford more than doubled that figure with an uptake of 23.8%. Although needles can be very terrifying for most, all staff who had injections had a great time receiving a lollipop at the end for being brave, vaccinator Kay Davies was blown away by our friendly staff stating “I would just like to say what a great group of staff and clients you have in your facilities. I really enjoyed my time at Afford and have already put in my request to do your vaccinations again next year! Due to the success this year we will be starting the vaccinations earlier next year so stay tuned and beat the flu!

Belmore Families Discuss NDIS Recently Belmore Lifestyle Centre held an NDIS meeting to provide families and carers from the site a relaxed environment to learn about the NDIS and how Afford services can be most beneficial to them thanks to generous funding from Carers NSW. Approximately 40 people attended the session which was led by District Manager Robert Mauceri and Customer Care Coordinator Nancy Elnajar and involved a very insightful question and answer session followed by a light dinner, giving families and carers an opportunity to socialise. Many parents mentioned how appreciative they were learning in such a comfortable environment only surrounded by people they were familiar with and the informal and ‘simply presented’ style of the discussion “in language they can understand” as quoted by many who attended. The presentation was such a great success that many parents and carers have asked for more events like this to be arranged at the site. Many thanks to Gautam, Nancy, Sarah, Vinod, and Judy who were required to stay back much longer on the night than was originally planned due to the overwhelming success of the evening.
