Page 3 Sean O’Leary is an individual who has been receiving Afford services at Belmore for several years. Before starting with Belmore, Sean resided in a hospital and found it extremely difficult to make new friends, meet new people, try new things and places, and socialise with anyone. Sean moved into his group home and begun 1:1 support with Afford Belmore staff, slowly getting used to new people and experiences.

Amongst Sean’s greatest achievements he has tried experience at a Retail Nursery for a number of months, office work at Belmore and is currently an active member of Belmore’s Meals on Wheels volunteer group. Sean has stated that volunteering at Meals on Wheels is now his favourite activity because he gets to meet and “talk to the old people”. Sean is now in the process of trying to “come to Afford more and making new friends” and trying new and exciting group activities. The growth and development of Sean’s social skills is due to the dedication of our great staff members Ibrahim, Kamil, and Vinnie who have been supporting Sean over the past year and half.

Club Afford Kicks Off In Style!

August saw the roll out of Club Afford activities across three of our hubs. Canley Vale and Belmore Lifestyle Centres and Cherrywood Village all hosted out of hours Zumba classes supporting Affords healthy lifestyle initiatives. On Saturday the 27th of August a group of 20 clients from our group homes, Cherrywood Village and Canley Vale and Blacktown Lifestyle centres took part in a day trip to the Powerhouse Museum at Darling Harbour and they absolutely loved it. The group was supported by passionate Lifestyle Assistants who went out of their way to ensure our clients had a fantastic time. Our Campbelltown hub has also held some great activities such as trips to the movies, museums, restaurants for lunch and is growing in popularity every week. Club Afford activities will be growing over the coming months to include more out of hour’s activities at our Lifestyle Centres and weekend activities departing from our four hubs. Our September calendar includes Zumba dance classes across four sites, a disco at Green Valley, movie night at Kings Park and trip to Richmond Jubilee and steam train ride from the Cherrywood hub. Be sure to keep an eye out for expressions of interest to staff for upcoming activities and spread the word to our clients to become a Club Afford member. For any enquiries or interest in staffing these activities contact Paul Mitchell at paul.mitchell@afford.com.au.

Raffles Meet Afford Superstars

Recently our 3 new group home residents visited our Raffles Call centre in Penrith for a suit fitting as they prepare for the Afford Ball. During their time at the call centre, staff recognised the three stars from the Penrith City Gazette which published an article on the residents moving into their new group home. Due to their new found fame, staff got them to sign the newspaper copy, telling them how famous they are now because they were in the paper. The signed article can now be seen in a frame displayed on the wall at the Penrith site.
