We are pleased to welcome Dean as a new member of the Afford community. Dean has recently started at the Afford Minchinbury ADE and is living in one of our Group Homes. Dean instantly became one of the team and has taken on his role of cleaning the Head Office with great enthusiasm and pride. Dean comes in with a smile and has gone above and beyond to make sure that the Head Office is sparkling clean. Dean spoke about his new role and said he “Loves to vacuum and make sure the paper is restocked for the photocopier.” He said he is loving his new role at Afford.

A Sad Farewell To Sanaa It is great sadness that we farewell Canley Vale client Sanaa Al Roumi, who passed away suddenly this week. Sanaa was receiving 1:1 support from Canley Vale staff in her nursing home. Sanaa was only 37 and a joy to work with. All the Staff would like to send out deepest sympathies to Sanaa’s family.

Chipping Norton Have It Covered

Donna Haviland

With the changeable weather causing many to stay indoors, the new pergola at Chipping Norton Lifestyle Centre will provide some relief from the heat, wind and rain. Clients are now not retsticted to indoor activities during extreme weather changes.

Favourite Movie: Steel Magnolias and Gone with the Wind.

The blinds on the pergola can be closed to keep out the wind, rain and heat and the pergola has turned the area into an extra room where clients can utilise it to enjoy their programs, or sit for lunch or just to sit and socialise with each other.

Team Leader ‘Butterflies’ Warwick Street Favourite Song: I have so many favourites but one that comes to mind is Echo Beach by Martha and the Muffins.

Favourite Hobbies: Fishing and camping. Favourite Foods: Gourmet Burgers If you could be an animal what would you be: An Eagle. What is your dream holiday destination: Canadian Rockys and onward to Alaska. If you had the power what would you change about the world: Discrimination and equality. What is the nicest thing someone has ever done for you: My husband surprised with a trip to Tasmania last year. I didn’t know where we were going until we got to the airport. If you had to teach something what would you teach: Manners and respect. Something no one knows about me: I have five rescue cats.

Thanks to a NSW Government Community Partnerships Grant, clients of the Afford Lifestyle Centre in Chipping Norton can now enjoy the outdoors all year round with their new outdoor pergola now completed.

Go Brothers Try Time! On Easter Sunday try time players from accommodation were thrilled to get out onto the football field during the Penrith Panthers versus Cronulla sharks game at the Penrith home ground. It was during half time, the clients were invited to play a game on the field, which they have been training hard for over the past few weeks. They had the best time and put all their ball skills to work in front of thousands of people who cheered on from the sidelines. What an amazing experience that will never be forgotten! GO BROTHERS TRY TIME.

Have The Confidence To Take Charge Of Your Life Everyone has their own unique abilities to be nurtured. Affords caring and dedicated staff work to support clients to achieve their best. Six years ago, Rachel and her family joined Afford to help identify ways for Rachel to overcome anxiety and lack of confidence in her own abilities. Team Leaders at the Afford Penrith Lifestyle Centre took the time to get to know Rachel better; learn about her interests and develop a plan, specifically for Rachel, that outlined some of her personal goals and aspirations. During her time at the Lifestyle Centre, Afford staff have gradually encouraged Rachel to begin making her own choices about what she wants to do when she attends and to get involved in activities she enjoys. Today, Rachel is a vibrant, happy and confident young woman that takes part in many programs. She is now one of the first to jump up and move to the rhythm of the music during music and dance programs, she has made a range of delicious dishes during cooking classes, and she enjoys swimming at the local pools. To work on her independence, Afford offers overnight respite services for Rachel. Afford Lifestyle Assistants are there to support Rachel if needed, but it is an opportunity for Rachel to experience living away from home. With the support of Afford, Rachel is now an active member of the Afford Penrith Lifestyle Centre community. Confidence in her own abilities now makes her willing to take part in new activities and try new life experiences. A testament to the transformational journey that Rachel has experienced, the Senior Lifestyle Assistant at the Afford Penrith Lifestyle Centre comments that ‘Rachel has become a participant in her own life, rather than being someone just watching it.’

Cherrywood Supersite Taking Super Shape The Cherrywood Supersite is taking shape with the activity block completed with new floors, walls and facilities. Penrith Lifestyle Centre clients are excited for the move into the Supersite with the first move into the activity block just around the corner! The Cherrywood Supersite is set to be a hive of activity with a Lifestyle Centre, secret garden and many more activities that are suited for clients of every care need. We are so excited to see this site transform into an industry leading facility that puts the needs of people with disability first and provides a breadth of choice and engagement.

Easter Show EGGcellent Adventure

Clients of the Ashfield Lifestyle Centre were super excited to visit the Sydney Royal Ester Show again this year to spend the day taking in the sights, sounds, smells and fun and thrills that can always be expected at the show. Clients eagerly awaited their trip in the week leading up to the Easter Show visit. Everyone was so excited that on every day in the week before their trip, one group of clients would come in extra early to beat the traffic; after all, the Easter Show is a once-in-a-year event! From the moment the group walked through the front gate it was an Easter Show spectacular of rides, animals, a variety of foods, show bags and stalls. From horse jumping to motorcycle jumping, clients and staff were amazed to watch it all! Everyone made sure to see the other Easter Show attractions such as the famous Animal Walk, sample the delicious Easter Show food, and all the other fantastic pavilions! Everyone returned back home from their long day of adventures with awesome show bags and a huge smile on their faces!!
