PERSONAL STATEMENT Since I graduated with a BSc in Architecture from the University of Malaya last year, I have become more certain of my desire and dream to become a qualified architect. My desire was further solidified through my current work as an Assistant Architect in Kuala Lumpur which has given me more confidence that I am on the right track in choosing the right career path. Armed with this new confidence, I decided to take my career forward to higher levels in pursue towards achieving my dream. As a kid, I have always been fascinated with creativity and visual arts. My passion in visual art has led me to choose architecture as my future career. I used to fantasize what my buildings would look like and would draw out my imaginations onto a piece of paper. As I got older, fantasy became a step closer to reality when I was accepted to study architecture for my undergraduate studies at University. Through my studies, I started to understand that architecture is more than just drawings but a combination of art and science in resolving problems. I was strongly attracted to architecture mainly because of its subjective nature. Instead of memorizing words from books or lecture notes, I felt that architecture knowledge can only truly be gained through practical experiences and observations. It is a lifetime learning process that never ends. Furthermore, I found architecture interesting as it is not only about a study of buildings but it is also a study about society and life. I believe architecture is a worthwhile career to pursue as whenever there are new developments, not only would they visibly impact the surrounding landscape but they also affect the society surrounding them as well. For example, an architect needs to understand the sociology of a particular site in order to create adequate space for people’s needs. These are the reasons that make me absolutely believe that architecture studies would lead me to a bright and exciting future.

Personally, I would describe myself as intellectually curious, creative, and not one who gives up easily. I am also always continuously seeking new challenges. This can be clearly seen through my working experience where I managed to overcome my fear and accept the challenges of every task without hesitation. I enjoy my work as I get to discover and learn various new aspects and social context of the architecture and planning practice. I am always ready to take on responsibilities and am a good team player. I have well-developed interpersonal skill and am able to communicate easily with people. I enjoy meeting new people, prompting my desire to travel around the world to broaden my horizon and explore new cultures. I also have good IT and drawing skills as evident in my coursework achievements. While I was studying, I used my spare time to improve my drawing skills and was a member of the sketching society at University. My ability to assess and resolve conflicting points of view has also benefited me in achieving academic excellence. With a deep passion for art, I continuously strive to expand and develop my talents to higher levels. For instance, I challenged myself to exhibit my paintings at an art exhibition organized by University of Malaya’s Art Gallery-ERTI twice, both which were a success. Since then, I have continued to produce paintings as a hobby. Besides drawing, I also take an interest in music, especially singing. I have taken part in a number of singing performances and contests during my school and university days. I also took ‘gamelan’ classes (Malay traditional music) and learned to play a music instrument called ‘bonang’. Performing on stage gave me a great opportunity to shine and increase my confidence level in public. It was truly an interesting and enjoyable moment that I will never forget. The opportunity to enroll for Master in Architecture (part 2) with an international university will bring me a step closer to realizing my dream to be a qualified architect. I believe that with my skills and experience as well as my strong passion, I am an ideal candidate for this course

ARCHITECTURE & PLAY: LINEAR|PLANAR|HYBRID|CUBE MANIPULATION.YEAR 1.SEM 1.2010.INDIVIDUAL

Planar project : Conceptually, the sculpture inLinear project : The flying “MOTH” shape

was interpreted to few black sticks rectangles to symbolize the colour of moth. Those few rectangles were finally combined to form spaces and intersected to each other. Then, intersection space between few rectangles was wrapped up with white strings to enhance the special space.

spired by the “CATERPILLAR”. It consists a hierachy from narrow spaces to larger spaces that symbolizes movement from adjacent spaces to dominant spaces. Those adjacent spaces supported to each other and lastly created the dominant space.

Hybrid project : For this project, the concept was

inspired by the natural bamboo tree which it represents the spaces by its trunks and shady leaves. The combination of linear and planar elements in the sculpture purposedly to enhance the importance of spatial organization and space order in design.

Cube project : A project called “cube manipulation” was actually to introduce students to additional and substraction terms in creating spaces. I had required to think critically in designing excitement spaces in the cube and learn the importance of additional and substraction elements in implementing architecture by using solid and void.

KANTANG SHOPHOUSE, THAILAND: MEASURED DRAWING.YEAR 1.SPECIAL SEM.2011.GROUP WORK

The growing awareness of the importance of traditional and cultural heritage studies have led governments and universities to record past construction technique and means of manufacturing materials so that it will not be lost with time. The practice of measured drawings is substantial in documenting the details of old buildings. With the objective to record the old heritage of Southern Thailand, a Chines styled shophouse was selected to be documented. My role as assistant lead and quality control was including measuring and documenting every single details on site. After measuring work done, we had to prepare all the drawings before we submit it to the archive in University Prince of Songkhla, Trang, Thailand. This is one of the best architectural experiences as I learnt about different cultures and historical of other countries.

SUHAIMI FADZIR’S ART GALLERY.YEAR 2.SEM 4.2012.INDIVIDUAL

Existing old facade

Suhaimi Fadzir and his artwork

Suhaimi Fadzir is a Malaysian leading contemporary artist on mixed media. He had won many Art and Architecture awards and has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows worldwide. As he as customer, the task required students to propose suitable working studio and art gallery for the artist. The site is located in front of Jalan TAR which the place is hectic and busy. Although the place is congested with cars but less people are walked near to the site. There is still-standing old facade structure at site that need to be integrated in the art gallery design. The facade with Neoclassical architectural style is the leftover from PH Hendry Jewellery shophouse. The concept was to revitalise the surrounding by designing a gallery with unique form to attract more people to come to the gallery.

Chow Kit’s Adolescence center is a rehab place for teenagers around Chow Kit who are physically and mentally abused, abandoned as well as homeless. This center serves as shelter and accomodate facilities for street teenagers to encourage them to build trusting relationships in a positive environment. Educate them to maintain optimist and confidence by designing a center that gives feeling of homie. As home is the place where love is planted,it establishes a healthy and functioning family structure where the teenagers feel safe, secure and love. The design also enhance the open space and green area to give sense of oasis to the site and phsychological teraphy. Apart of providing residentials, the programmes also include spaces for informal educational to fulfill them with skills to learn life independent and disprove negative perceptions of community toward Chow Kit’s adolescence.Shophouse is a concrete idea which form developed as Chow Kit also consist of shophouses and commercial area.

‘HOME’ where the heart is “We need to give more, we should place them in HOME which are comfortable and which still provide them love and affection. Chow Kit is well known as a trade center in the city. Most of the building are from various architectural style of commercial shophouses. Therefore, to maintain site’s identity, the elements of the shophouses are implied as it to let the ambience of Chow Kit into the adolescence center. This is not only to keep the facade engage with the surrounding, but hence, it is to ensure the teenagers to feel like they are in their own place called ‘home’.

BASEMENT IDEA & CONCEPT

Perspective from Jalan Sri Amar

The idea is to understand Chow Kit’s people behaviour and activities as psychological approach to design a college . In order to make these people feel comfortable and inviting to learn here, the atmosphere should be familiar and the spaces need to allow them to feel like they belong to Chow Kit. After site analysis and research, the “steps” methodology is introduced slowly to attract students from any backgrounds to gain education. Therefore, the ground floor is designed by providing open-air spaces to trigger various typical activities in Chow Kit and provide learning module programmes based on what Chow Kit’s people expertise on the upper levels.

In the form context, tall steel tree columns symbolize tree canopies which show strength and support that education is for all. Furthermore, curvy corridors create sense of free flow spaces and openness to reduce intense of learning environment.

This project is additional interior project for me to understand and exploring another sub-topic of architecture. Besides, this project also has taught me lessons in dealing diplomatically with people in a construction world. Unit E2-2, Treez @ Bukit Jalil is owned by a young woman entrepeneur, Evonne and her husband. The house is consist of three floors which is the ground floor consists of garage, store and AV room while the first flloor is more to family space. OTHERS : HOBBIES & INTERESTS.2010-2014.

ERTI (2012-2013) ERTI is an annual art exhibition held by Universiti Malaya Art Galeri start from 2012. Thought this as a massive opportunity to develop my skills in art as well as to challenge myself to step up to another level, I participated in both respectively exhibition. ERTI I (2012): In first ERTI exhibition, I collaborated with my partner to produce an artwork called ‘ Akar (Root)’. This abstract piece express our definitions about life and the journey of human being is likely as plant which begin from root and growing up to be a mature tree. ERTI I (2013): Then, I participated the next exhibition in 2013 individually and produced two acrylic paintings called ‘ Woman in Red I & II’. This series is a result of my emotional and feminism side. Red colour is synonym to emotionally relate to woman and represent sexism.

ERTI I (2012)

ERTI I (2013)

The Siblings Project (2014) The siblings project is the Muslimah fashion project that produce handmade kimono caftan and ‘batik’ pants. This project is established by my two sisters and I to increase the interest of Malaysian women to wear Malaysian cultural fabric ‘batic’. We also made a kimono caftan design which mix Japanese cultural and Malaysian caftan. Therefore, this project is not only to challenge my creativity in fashion field, but it is also the opportunity for me to explore more in art and relate architecture in the modest fashion.

Urban Sketch Because of my deep interest in sketching, I have joined few groups of urban sketcher around my campus and Kuala Lumpur in order to practice my architectural sketch and draw skills. For example, I joined UM’s sketch group and KL sketch group to sketch buildings and scenery around Kuala Lumpur. This is due to my opinion, that to be a good architect, I need to sharpen my hand drawing and always keep my eyes on details.
