Devices to Track Physical Activity

1. Heart Rate Monitor: § Personal Monitoring Device § Measures heart rate during exercise and gives immediate feedback § Used for various types of exercise § http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dp_U8lPN9LU&feature=related 2. Speed & Distance Monitors: § Measures how fast you are going and how far you have gone § Some models are aimed for specific modes of exercise § Allows you to download data to computer to track progress (most

models) § Heart rate monitor (some models) § Includes alarm, date, time, and stopwatch

3. Pedometers: § A pedometer is a beeper-sized device you wear on your waist that counts

the number of steps you take. § Pedometers provide objective measurement of physical activity and are one potential remedy to the problem of inaccurate activity recall.

Types of Heart Rate Monitors 1. Heart Rate Monitor Watch § Used for people who like to lose weight and increase level of fitness § Most popular 2. Strapless Heart Rate Monitor § Does not require a chest strap § Works by using 2 fingers/placing on the sensor for about 4 to 12 seconds § Obtains accurate ECG HR readings 3. Chest Strap Models § Offers continuous HR info without needing to stop during § Better accuracy § expensive

3

Top 3 Heart Rate Monitors 1. SUUNTO TIC § $90.00 § 3 programmable training zones § Real time calories burned § Speedometer style dial § Log session with min, max, and average data 2. SUUNTO T3 § $170.00 § 15 workout log § Training effect software (scores the intensity and effort of a workout on a 1 to 5 scale) § Speed 3. CICLOSPORT § $70.00 § Consistent and reliable § Recall time spent in a particular training zone § Handlebar mount and visual counter 4

Types of Speed & Distance Monitors GPS-Driven Version: §

Uses Global Positioning System satellites to track speed and distance

§

1 piece: Wrist unit

§

Accurate speed and distance PROS: § § § § §

Most accurate 1 piece Convenience No stride calibration Tells exact position

CONS: § § § §

§

Expensive Wrist unit must be facing the sky (necessary for satellite lock) Signal reception may be interrupted by taking sharp turns and swinging arms Might not work in some areas (dense forests, canyons, between tall buildings, indoors) - Some have option of including foot pod to use where there is no satellite reception 5

Types of Speed & Distance Monitors Accelerometer Version: § § §

§

Uses a sensor to send data to wrist monitor to track speed and distance Nearly as accurate as GPS-driven version 2 pieces: - Wrist unit - Sensor (foot pod or bike hub) PROS: § Less expensive § Accurate on all terrain and when making sharp turns § Works outdoors and indoors CONS: § Less accurate § Less convenient § Requires stride calibration 6

Types of Pedometers 1. Spring Levered § A spring-suspended horizontal lever arm moves up and down in response to the movement of your hips as you walk or run. The movement opens and closes an electrical circuit, and as the lever arm makes contact, a step is registered. § Spring-levered pedometers must be placed in a vertical plane, perpendicular to the ground, in order for them to work. They don't work if they tip forward to a horizontal plane. 2. Piezoelectric § Piezoelectric is a material that generates an electric charge when it is mechanically deformed. Piezoelectric pedometers use a horizontal cantilevered beam with a weight on the end that compresses a piezoelectric crystal when subjected to movement like walking. § This generates a voltage proportional to the acceleration and the voltage oscillations are used to record steps. § 7

Top 2 Pedometers 1. Omron GoSmart Pocket Pedometer HJ-112 § Best Pedometer § Estimated of about $30.00 § Uses dual accelerometers to count steps, more accurate for overweight and slow walking individuals § Counts everyday steps and aerobic steps separately while tracking distance and calories burned 2. Yamax Digi- Walker SW-200 § Basic Pedometer § Estimated of about $20.00 § Only counts steps § Easy to use, high accuracy results § Uses a spring-lever mechanism, and it can only clip to the waist

Benefits of Heart Rate Monitors 1. Contributes to Loosing Weight: ยง Experts claim that in order to lose weight you need to raise your heart rate to as much as 70% of max heart rate for 30 minutes. 2. Helps Monitor Our Health: ยง

Allows you to detect health problems that you would not notice otherwise.

3. Helps Maintain a Level of Discipline: ยง It can tell when your exercise is falling below your ideal intensity 9

Benefits of Speed & Distance Monitors ยง

A speed and distance monitor acts as a speedometer and odometer during your run, it provides your running speed and distance traveled.

ยง

Allows you to know how fast you are running (pace or speed)

ยง

Allows you to know how far you have run (distance)

ยง

Allows you to preset distance marker for automatic lap/split times

10

Benefits of Pedometers ยง

Pedometers provide a way to measure your physical activity and can act as a motivator.

ยง

10,000 steps is a popular recommendation for pedometers

ยง

Exercise decreases risk of diseases, improvement in bone density, decreases in BP, reduction in certain types of cancer, increase in muscular endurance and strength, etc.

ยง

ACSM recommends aerobic exercise for 30 minutes each session, 3 days per week at a moderate intensity along with 2 days of resistance training, also at a moderate intensity

11

How to Use a Heart Rate Monitor 1. Determine HR Max ยง Max HR (bpm) = (220-Age) 2. Construct target zone for workouts ยง

Aerobic training 70% and 90% HR Max

3. Start monitor as soon as you begin the activity let it measure your HR 4. Frequently check HR monitor: ยง Check at 5 min and 10 min mark to see if your working at ideal zone 5. Take note of the amount of time it took to get to your ideal heart rate. Keep track of beats per minute

12

History of Heart Rate Monitors § Earliest models consisted of a monitoring box with a set of § § § § § §

electrodes which attached to the chest 1977 Saynajakangas founded Polar Electro 1979 he filed the first patent for wireless heart rate measurement 1982 started manufacturer of the first heart monitor 1998 Polar invented a monitor for athletes who tend to over train 2001 The company launched the first heart rate monitor based training system for team sports Today other companies have joined polar in the manufacturer of heart rate monitors
