HELLO Hey there! My name is Afiqah. I am currently a Year 3 Architecture undergraduate student at National University of Singapore (NUS). I am recently interested in guerilla architecture. I find it important to conserve heritage while creating new and exciting spaces. I believe architects don’t have to build big to create large impact. I also believe that guerilla architecture allows for a more sustainable approach, which is quintessential today. In general, I am passionate about creating meaningful and joyful spaces for different users. Aside from my curiosities in architecture, I am constantly learning new things and exploring my creativity through film, photography and graphic design. .

THE GREEN LINK 2018 YEAR 2 SEM 2 DESIGN STUDIO TUTOR: LOOI CHEE KIN
The whole narrative of this project revolves around the idea of creating a multidirectional architecture; one that encourages users to make their own choices rather than dictate where or what they should do. This narrative is derived from my observations and experience of walking through the whole stretch of Kallang river. What really struck was how the experience was very linear and monodirectional. There was little opportunity for Park Connector Users (PCN) to stop and get close to the water. Building relationship between man and his environment is crucial, especially sow when working towards the goal of sustainability. Therefore, the design intervention aims to bring people closer to the water, in hopes of building a healthy relationship between the two and making man more conscious about his actions towards the environment.

The green link is an important feature of this design as it allows the building to assimilate into the surrounding context. At the same time, this green link becomes a facility for the residents and PCN users in which pockets of recreational spaces are provided. This gives them a reason to linger on the Kallang River and also provides an opportunity for them to get closer to nature. Symbolically, the green link becomes my vision of bringing man and his environment together where the two benefit each other and thrive together, creating a sustainable future.
K A LL A N G R IVE R S I T E A N A LYS I S
The main observations from walking the whole stretch of Kallang River was the lack of opportunities for interaction with water. The river becomes merely a visual guide for a person to get from one place to another. How an

to
enhance a user’s spatial experience at Kallang River?
CO N CEP T The aim is to create a multidirectional architecture which sits on the Kallang River. This architecture has to allow decisionmaking by users itself. To move from a linear and
mono-directional
experience
which
is caused by the dictative nature of paths, the architecture has to break away from conventional circulation paths and provide options for users to decide on.
Above is a
framework to understand
how people use spaces and overcome invisible boundaries. It begins with how the space is perceived, followed by the user’s understanding of how to use the space which eventually informs the behaviour of user in response to the space.
ITER ATI O N S WA LL A R C H I T E C T U R E Do walls only exist physically or do they also exist as a result of our perception?
Issues: Walls create a very enclosed space,
restricting
natural
ventilation.
While high walls create spatial depth, the building becomes fortress-like, rendering it unappealing and impractical.
O B LI Q U E F U N C T I O N The building has to be more open. Movement and resting spaces are combined. The spaces provide users with options on what to do. The tilting of planes forming ramps, not only allows for circulation but also rest. By breaking up floor planes, there is a sense of depth and also constant visual connection with the river. Tilting planes may slow down movement, heightening users’ awareness of the surrounding.
CH O S EN S ITE - P OTO N G PA S IR AVEN U E 3 The location was chosen because of its centrality with respect to the whole stretch of Kallang River, making C4 a potential pit stop for PCN users and enhacning their journey as a whole.

People
HDB avoid
spending time by the river during the day because of the lack of shade and overwhelming heat.
Man and the environment share a symbiotic relationship. Horticulture is the proposed community building activity as not only does it benefit the environment, it is also scientifically proven to bring mental health benefits. As such, workshop spaces will be provided in the C4.
The existing bridge is merely a means to cross the river, Despite the beautiful views that can be seen from the bridge, users neglect to pause in their track. The whole experience becomes unidirectional and people forget to appreciate their surroundings. A possible reason for this is that the bridge is narrow and is constantly exposed to direct sunlight, making it uncomfortable for users to linger.
