angela fortino welcomes you. sprawl. i hate it, you dislike it, your mother might enjoy it and well grandma doesn’t know anything but it. but we can all agree the traditional form of sprawl and the american dream has become a nightmare. funny thing is majority of us either grew up in it or live there now. even funnier is that many of us may not realize our supposed city, town, or country side home is indeed another structure adding to suburban sprawl. i know i didn’t.
tending to one of five of our mother’s gardens, getting lost on our parent’s 5 acre plot and having to travel 15 minutes by car to get anywhere that defined me. a few years ago i learned the name of this place. 5467 nichols rd wasn’t city, wasn’t town, and wasn’t quite country. it was just another 1970s house in the harris subdivision. rural sprawl is what defined me. crisis over. well sort of...
sprawl = placelessness = crisis it all started in middle school. i had spent elementary school in the village of lennon, lived in what i thought was the rural country side of gaines township while venturing into swartz creek after school to hang out at the family grocery store. middle school came and it was off to another town, this time durand. where did i identify with? i wasn’t technically a “lennon rat,” as i was there only between 8 am and 3:30 pm from kindergarten to 6th grade, but i wasn’t a city brat from swartz creek since i lived in the country. yet i wasn’t even a country kid since i did not live on a farm! certainly, i wasn’t a “durand dirty” being that i couldn’t tell you which street was main street or where south side actually was. where was i? who was i? place i•den•ti•ty cri•sis (noun) a period of uncertainty and confusion in which a sense of where a person is from and how it has shaped them is insecure; typically due to a location’s lack of identity and uniqueness, compounded by the need to travel to various locations for necessities and daily activities.
college came and it was off to kalamazoo. finally i could escape my place identity crisis, or so i thought... new friend: “where’d you grow up?” me: “well....i went to high school in durand but lived in the country side of swartz creek.” new friend: “where?” me: “oh, some little towns outside of flint.” new friend: “oooooo. flint. that sucks.” lennon, swartz creek, durand, flint. all these places i was associated with but none defined who i truly was. but if one of these cities did not define me what did? it was my sisters and i playing in tall trees,
pi
today i study cities and everything in between. our surroundings inform our views and experiences...the built environment is extremely powerful yet dependent on the people who live in, care for, and manage it. as an urban planner i will help bring stability to places be it flint, durand, or even harris subdivision. (i have yet to come to terms that i am just another suburbanite.) no place should be a nightmare but many are. it is my generation’s job to pick up the pieces left behind by others and imagine something new, something that will mitigate placelessness and all the various crises that plague america’s built environment (be them personal or collective). throughout my portfolio, you will find class explorations in various environments. i acknowledge that every place is important; as cities are revitalized we must not allow the suburbs to become slums; we must protect rural land for future generations; we must strive for stability, equality and balance. expectations are high but my generation of urban and regional planners can handle it, that i do know.

passenger, commuter, and light rails are hot topics these days in michigan. to gain a better understanding of the existing rail routes in the state, a trip on the wolverine line from ann arbor to detroit was taken. data for travel speeds, distance, and scenery was recorded. using mecanoo’s “fun road” mapping concept, data was plotted along the rail route. the route was then straightened and using 6 degrees as a benchmark, the route and data was then translated onto a circle.

as amtrak riders exit the detroit station they are greeted by two things: concrete and motorized vehicles. while many people, including myself, know woodward is a wide thorough fare connecting detroit city to the suburbs, the expansiveness of this avenue is not truly realized until it is sectioned. a second section depicts the varied levels of access to the amtrak station. these sections expand the visualization of a rail user experience.

municipal waste | the constructed landscape. pro•ject de•scrip•tion
land is cheap in michigan so why not fill it with trash? afterall, trash IS a commodity...sold and traded as if it was a stock on wall street and we all know michigan could use an economic boost. unfortunately while landfills create cash flows they also cause contamination, hazards and are quite unsightly, especially for those who live and work near them. municipal waste: the constructed landscape is part one of a group project that explores landfills from a planners perspective. specifically, development and demographics around eagle valley landfill were explored.

in this section of the group project, we asked how much trash is coming in and from where? in 2009, eagle valley landfill took in a little over 500,000 yd3 of municpal waste from oakland county and a few surrounding neighbors. now that’s alot of trash! how is this possible? the wast-e-scapes infographics provide some dirty answers.

living around looked at an area immediately south of eagle valley landfill. 2-D data was transferred into a 3-D model to gain better understanding of the built environment. it is shocking the close proximity of industrial and residential uses; however, upon closer investigation, the residential area with the worst location is orion lakes mobile home park. sadly, we send our poorest residents to the least desirable areas, coincidence? i think not.

municipal waste | living around.
in the final part of municipal waste: living around, orion lakes mobile home park was further investigated. the park is a residential development located between eagle valley landfill and oakland heights landfill. the position of the park creates a less than desirable situation for residents as a landfill lingers in the horizon both to the north and south. a shadow study was first completed to understand the shadow patterns cast on the park. a second excercise involved renderings to visualize the juxtaposition of life and waste.
