In his impressive four-volume work Répertoire des catalogues de ventes publiques intéressant l’art ou la curiosité (“Repertory of Catalogues of Public Sale concerned with Art or Objets d’art”), Frits Lugt (Amsterdam 1884–Paris1970) covered the period 1600 to 1925. In Lugt’s Répertoire, the catalogues are arranged in strict chronological order and provide meticulous details of auctions, as well as recording annotations written in the catalogues. Lugt also indicates the library where the catalogue may be consulted. The online edition of Lugt’s work for the period 1600-1900 is the “entrance gate” to Arts Sales Catalogues Online, but is also available as a separate online database. For ASCO the microfiches were digitized. Online editions of the catalogues are available for all catalogues available by BRILL. ASCO will be updated and supplemented regularly. Since 2011 we digitize the sales catalogues directly from the original print copy in full color. 1600-1900 more than 30,000 catalogues accessible online supplements will be added regularly. In the coming years Brill will add more than 3,000 auction catalogues to ASCO from the Frick Research Library in New York. Online Online access
The Art Sales Catalogues Online (ASCO) publication offers easy access to complete historical art sales catalogues for the period 1600 to 1900. Lugt’s Répertoire online database has been included in this publication and serves as the “entrance gate” to the catalogues.
The earliest art sales catalogues, also known as auction catalogues, appeared in the early 17th century, as simple leaflets. Over time, the catalogues grew into extensive, richly-illustrated publications. The catalogues are intriguing not only from the point of view of Art History, but also provide glimpses into the economic and sociological climate of the time. Much research in the field of Art History relies on access to art sales catalogues. Art Sales Catalogues online providing access to thousands of complete sales catalogues from the period 1600-1900, combines a wealth of information from art sales catalogues with the reference facility of Lugt’s Répertoire.

War, revolution and politics have conspired to destroy library holdings or frustrate access to publications from China’s treaty century. The fully text-searchable North China Herald Online will be one of the primary resources on a period which continues to shape much of China’s world and worldview.
During this so-called ‘treaty century’ (1842-1943) the Western Powers established a strong presence in China through their protected enclaves in major cities. It was published weekly in Shanghai, at the heart of China’s encounter with the EuroAmerican world in a city at the forefront of developments in Chinese politics, culture, education and the economy. As the official journal for British consular notifications, and announcements of the Shanghai Municipal Council, it is the first -- and sometimes only -- point of reference for information and comment on a range of foreign and Chinese activities. Regularly it also features translations of Chinese official notifications and news. The Herald had correspondents across the whole of China. These supplied a constant stream of news on an extensive range of topics, as well as news and gossip, such as, -- apart from news and gossip reflecting the social, cultural and political life of the foreign settlements--, trade statistics, stock prices, Chinese news, essays on Chinese culture and language, law reports from foreign courts in the settlements, company reports, news on foreign social, cultural and political life, maps, cartoons, photographs, stock prices and law and company reports, advertisements, tables of tea, silk and cotton exports, or long-forgotten facts about missionaries, birth, marriage, and death announcements. Its coverage extends well beyond British communities, and includes other foreign nationals - the French, Danish, Italian, German, Dutch…, etc., etc.
Available on BrillOnline.comVisit brill.com for accurate purchase options and pricing information.
HIGHLIGHTSWORKSREFERENCEMAJOR4 The North China Herald Online
Although a thriving treaty port press developed over the century of the foreign presence, no other newspaper existed over such an extended period, and covers it in such incredible depth and variety. The dense unindexed columns of the Herald offer therefore an indispensable, still largely unexplored treasure-trove for any scholar of modern Chinese history.

The Brill Encyclopedia of Early Christianity (BEEC) focuses on the history of early Christianity, covering texts, authors, and ideas. The BEEC aims both to provide a critical review of the methods used in Early Christian Studies and also to update the history of scholarship. The BEEC addresses a range of traditions, including iconographic, martyrological, ecclesiastical, and Christological traditions, as well as cultic phenomena, such as the veneration of saints. The history of the transmission of texts and the attention to recent scholarship will play an important role. The BEEC focuses on early Christianity from a historical perspective in order to uncover the lasting legacy of the authors and texts until the present day. Its content is intended to bridge the gap between the fields of New Testament studies and patristics, covering the whole period of early Christianity up to 600 CE. Currently only 330 articles are available. The encyclopedia will consist of about 1300 articles. Every year about 300 articles will be added until planned competion in 2022. Once the online version is completed the encyclopedia will become available in print in 6 volumes.

Translated from German into English, approximately 800 keywords present the current state of international research and depict a complex portrait of Jewish life - illustrated by many maps and images. About 40 key articles convey central themes on concepts like autonomy, exile, emancipation, literature, liturgy, music or the science of Judaism. The seventh volume index offers a detailed list of persons, places and subjects that creates a reliable reference for working with the encyclopedia. The encyclopedia provides knowledge in an overall context and offers academics and other interested readers new insights into Jewish history and culture. It is an outstanding contribution to the understanding of Judaism and modernity.
From Europe to America to the Middle East, North Africa and other nonEuropean Jewish settlement areas the Encyclopedia of Jewish History and Culture covers the recent history of the Jews from 1750 until the 1950s.

History of Global Christianity deals with the history of Christianity and its global development over the past five centuries. Going above and beyond the subject of church history, it deals with the cultural role of Christianity in its widest sense: from the many interactions of Christianity within society, politics, economics, philosophy and the arts, to the myriad of ventures that form civilizations, nations, and communities. How did Christianity involve itself in these overarching structures of human life?

The reference work aims to trace the history of the global shift experienced by Christianity between the sixteenth century and the present day. Starting as a localized religion in Europe and Russia with small outposts in other parts of the world, that shift proceeded via missionary efforts that were accompanied by economic forces, movements of conquest, and trends of migration in its evolution toward the current stage: its demographic centers no longer only in the Northern Hemisphere, but most assuredly in the South as well.

The World Religion Database (WRD) contains detailed statistics on religious affiliation for every country in the world. It is the major source to render a definitive picture of international religious demography. The WRD provides both current and historical data, as well as sophisticated forecasts of future developments. For each of the world’s religions, best estimates at multiple dates for the period 1900 to 2050 are given. The WRD also offers access to the sources which underlie the figures in the database, such as censuses and surveys. Through an interactive feedback mechanism users can leave comments on sources or methodology related to any figure reported in the WRD. The WRD is constantly updated with new sets of data as they become available, such as estimates of religious affiliation at the province level and religious freedom information for all countries in the world. No other database available today is as comprehensive.

Book Sales Catalogues in the Dutch Republic, 1599 - ca. 1800
Praise for Book Sales Catalogues Online: “This is a wonderful resource, and a goldmine of information for anyone interested in the religion, politics, literature and intellectual culture of the early modern period. By the seventeenth century, the Dutch Republic had earned the title of ‘the bookshop of the world’, not just for the quality of its publications but also for the number of foreign imprints sold in its marketplace. The catalogues presented here help us to understand the book world in all of its various guises: the international trade in jurisprudence, the many varieties of medical texts, learned and vernacular, the sophisticated market in Bibles and devotional texts, the emerging passion for history and literature. The Dutch were the first and most sophisticated exponents of the book auction, and the editors of this project have trawled the world for examples, many of which survive in only one single copy. Exhaustively researched and beautifully presented, there is no better example of how digital technology can unlock the secrets of what previous generations chose to buy and to read.” - Andrew Pettegree, Professor of Modern History at the University of St Andrews, and Director of the Universal Short Title Catalogue. English language entries now available The Encyclopedia of Early Modern History (Online) offers 400 years of Early Modern History in one work. Experts from all over the world have joined in a presentation of the scholarship on the great era between the mid-15th to the mid-19th centuries. The perspective is European. That does not mean, however, that the view on the rest of the world is blocked. On the contrary - the multifaceted interrelatedness of European and other cultures is scrutinized extensively. The Encyclopedia of Early Modern History provides the latest answers to history’s key questions:
- Which major cultural currents have begun to become apparent?
- How did historical interpretation of certain phenomena change?
• More information on brill.com/emhb • April 2016 • E-ISSN 2352-0248
- Which ideas, inventions, and events changed people’s lives? - In which ways did living conditions change? - How do political, social, and economic developments interlock?
As in a web of red threads, the individual articles are connected to one another. The reader who follows the threads will keep coming upon new and unexpected contexts and links. The Encyclopedia of Early Modern History (Online) is based on the printed publication Die Enzyklopädie der Neuzeit (J.B. Metzler Verlag Stuttgart). At its peak in 1967, the U.S. nuclear arsenal consisted of 31,255 nuclear weapons with an aggregate destructive power of 12,786 megatons – more than sufficient to wipe out all of humanity several hundred times over. Much less known is that hidden away in earth-covered bunkers spread throughout the U.S., Europe and Japan, over 40,000 tons of American chemical weapons were stored, as well as thousands of specially designed bombs that could be filled with even deadlier biological warfare agents. The American WMD programs remain cloaked in secrecy, yet a substantial number of revealing documents have been quietly declassified since the late 1970s. Put together, they tell the story of how America secretly built up the world’s largest stockpile of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. The documents explain the role these weapons played in a series of world crises, how they shaped U.S. and NATO defense and foreign policy during the Cold War, and what incidents and nearly averted disasters happened. Moreover, they shed a light on the dreadful human and ecological legacy left by decades of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons manufacturing and testing in the U.S. and overseas.

Linguistic Bibliography Online contains over 440,000 detailed bibliographical descriptions of linguistic publications on general and language-specific theoretical linguistics. While the bibliography aims to cover all languages of the world, particular attention is given to the inclusion of publications on endangered and lesser-studied languages. Publications in any language are collected, analyzed and annotated (using a state-of-the-art system of subject and language keywords) by an international team of linguists and bibliographers from all over the world. With a tradition of over sixty-five years, and over 20,000 references added annually, the Linguistic Bibliography remains the most comprehensive bibliography for every scholar and student of linguistics. Linguistic Bibliography Online includes all bibliographical references of the printed yearbooks 1993-present, as well as additional materials which are exclusive to the online version (e.g. online resources). New bibliographical descriptions on the latest linguistic publications are added to the online database on a monthly basis. Annual volumes of the Linguistic Bibliography continue to be published in print.

HIGHLIGHTSWORKSREFERENCEMAJOR47
In order to understand the present day dimensions of mutual perceptions between Christians and Muslims, the history of relations must be recovered and accurately mapped. This work is currently being undertaken in an international project led by David Thomas, Professor Emeritus of the University of Birmingham. Its outcome is the series Christian-Muslim Relations: a Bibliographical History. Each volume contains detailed descriptions and assessments of texts written by the one community about or against the other, together with introductory and contextual essays, and an index, providing an important tool for future research. The first phase, Christian-Muslim Relations: A Bibliographical History 1 (CMR1), covers the crucial period 600 to 1500 (volumes 1-5). The second phase (“CMR1900”), which will take the project up to the end of the First World War, is a work in progress. So far 13 volumes of CMR have been published.
