here is no doubt significant investment is currently being piped into West Africa’s oil and gas industry as the continent’s rising demand for energy fuels a buoyant time for industry players. Spending on exploration and production projects, as well as oil and gas infrastructure projects, such as refineries, pipelines, LNG and GTL facilities was expected to reach $21.30bn in 2013. The continent is predicted to experience the world’s fastest regional energy demand growth between now and 2035 as urbanisation, rising populations

and strong GDP growth of its economies continue to expand. According to the BP Energy Outlook 2035 for Africa, in 2035 the continent will have 21 percent (1.8 billion) of the world’s population compared to 15 percent today and the region will account for 44 percent of global increase. The continent’s energy production is projected to grow by 93 percent between today and 2035: much faster than the global average of 41 percent. West is where it is at

Helping it to achieve this ambition is the $1.66 billion takeover of ConocoPhillips’ Nigerian assets, by Oando Plc’s subsidiary, Oando Energy Resources, a deal which was struck in December 2012, has reached financial close and is awaiting governmental approval for completion. The deal will secure interests in oil fields, on and offshore assets along with a stake in a power plant and is playing a major role in the 11

Safety Officer at Stubb Creek In recent years, the Nigerian government has liberalised and, in many cases, privatised the process of power provision in the West African country, paving the way for increased investment in gas infrastructure. Ultimately, the end-users, comprising both domestic and industrial consumers, will be the ones to see a real improvement in the supply of energy, an achievement of which Seven Energy’s Nigerian-born Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Phillip Ihenacho is exceptionally proud. “We’re a special case in Nigeria

because we not only invest in extracting oil and gas, but in the infrastructure you need in order to deliver gas to the consumers,” he said. Seven Energy has already made extensive progress towards achieving its ambitious goals in Nigeria. Having secured significant interests in the undeveloped Uquo and Stubb Creek fields in the south east Niger Delta, the company is now forging ahead with bringing the fields into production. Alongside this development, the company has recently put the finishing touches on its 200 million-cubic-feet-of-gasper-day gas processing facility near the Uquo field. The projects to provide gas to the Ibom Power station (near Ikot Abasi) and the Calabar NIPP power station (near Calabar) will generate over 750 MW of electricity, equivalent to more than 10 percent of Nigeria’s 61

Major provider Seven Energy has gone through a rapid transformative process since it was established as an arm of US oil services giant Weatherford in 2004, when it was operating mainly in the US and Canada. In its early days, Seven Energy’s operation was centred on developing discovered oil and gas fields that were not reaching their potential and bringing them up to international standards. The idea to pursue opportunities in the Nigeria market followed, and after a management buy-out led by Ihenacho in 2007, followed by a merger with the local Exoro Energy Corporation, Seven Energy was able to develop a sound, long-term investment Phillip Ihenacho, CEO 63

were no longer developing or were attributing less value to.” Seven Energy’s approach is to focus on the gas reserves and resources in these marginal fields and to develop its own gas processing units and pipeline network to transport the gas to end users. Although this would have been nigh-on impossible several years ago, the Nigerian government’s move towards commercialisation of the energy market has allowed the company’s approach to flourish. “There are a number of things that have happened in Nigeria 67

recently that make our operation possible,” said Ihenacho. “Most significantly, the power sector has been commercialised and the government is in the process of privatising generation and distribution companies in the sector,” he said. Commercial understanding Until now, the power sector has been primarily government owned, meaning that power plants have never been committed to paying commercially viable prices for gas. “With the liberalisation of the power sector in Nigeria, we are starting to see an industry framework that is more realistic

and so suddenly you have got a key component for stimulating gas supply to the power sector, that over time will become much more private sector led and much more powerful with the overall result being the improvement of the service for the consumer,” said Ihenacho. The regulatory changes and liberalisation of the power sector has meant that the company now has a key customer base that over time is expected to further broaden and diversify. This recent change in policy has been coupled with the Nigerian government’s ongoing Gas Master Plan. The plan is a proactive attempt by the government to establish basic policies around the gas market, including the principle of willing buyer/willing seller. It’s been a positive move for Seven Energy, which has welcomed the liberalisation of the market laying the foundation for private investment in infrastructure that will only come when investment is made attractive to business. The company has entered the Nigerian energy market in a considered and measured manner. typically producing and supplying gas on 15-25 year contracts, so we’re going to be interacting with the communities and customers in the long run,” he said. Although Seven Energy’s approach to Nigeria may be a break from many of the Supermajors’ operations in the country, the logic of the longevity of the company’s planned operation in Nigeria is unquestionable. The chronic power shortage in Nigeria is an issue both for domestic and industrial consumers in a country with the largest population and one of the fastest growing economies in Africa. Both domestic and industrial consumers rely mainly on privately owned diesel generators - and only 40-50 percent of the population has access to electricity from the grid. Diesel is around 10 times the price of Seven Energy’s current average gas sales price ($2.50 per thousand cubic feet of gas compared to $23.09 for the equivalent amount of diesel). Since the issue of power has become increasingly highlighted on the political stage in Nigeria, more has been done to attract private sector investors of Seven Energy’s standing to ensure that the infrastructure and 79

When we make an acquisition in a new location, we are typically producing and supplying gas on 1525 year contracts, so we’re going to be interacting with the communities and customers in the long-run” — Phillip Ihenacho modernisation of Nigerian energy is completed properly. “The government has done well to create a commercial environment that is conducive to investment by the private sector,” said Ihenacho. For some time, the government in Nigeria has attempted to encourage investment (mostly from Supermajors) into the development of the gas industry for domestic market supply. Looking forward, the government’s current path has led it to making investment more commercially viable, which is why the situation is now improving rapidly with new key players such as Seven Energy which are dedicated to the Nigerian energy market and will continue to be so.

Community partner Seven Energy’s record speaks for itself. With the company recently ticking over 7,500,000 hours with no time lost in incidents, it is rightly proud of its enviable health and safety and environmental record. The oil and gas industry – especially in emerging markets – operates on a rigorous environmental standards procedure. However, the company sees its exceptional record in this field as a minimum, and strives to go further with its operational certifications, as well as its community relations. “With the types of projects that we are involved in, we interact very closely with a host of communities,” said Ihenacho. “We build pipelines 81

T

he tenacity and perseverance of its leader has made privately-held Nigerian oil exploration and production company Oriental Energy Resources Limited the success it is today. Dr Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi first set up the Company in 1990 and despite early challenges, Oriental has significantly grown thanks to his steadfastness and vision. Group Chief Operating Officer, Rick Camp said: “Talk about a story of perseverance; Dr Indimi, who comes from humble beginnings, is a self-made man and has shown great

fortitude. “He is the sole owner of Oriental and received his first block OPL 224 in 1990 and persevered with it for almost 20 years before the drilling successes started to come.” At the end of the 1990s, the Nigerian Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) gave the approval to convert OPL 224 to OML 115 as a result of progress shown on the block. Oriental was then able to secure two more fields Okwok in 2006 and Ebok in 2007. Today, Ebok is producing on average 35,000 bopd and it is planned Okwok will go into 91

Aggressive exploration Ebok’s development followed aggressive exploration and drilling programmes. When it came into production in the second quarter of 2011 it initiated the largest development progamme for an independent Nigerian oil company to date. The Company has many milestones to be proud of, not least of which is its extensive technological achievements, which 92

include a number of firsts for the industry. “This is an extremely technologically driven industry and the Ebok JV Partnership have just produced a list of historical technical achievements that have been attained on the Ebok Field,” explained Camp. The long list includes: From appraisal drilling to first oil in 20 months; the largest capacity MOPU installation in Nigeria; the largest ESP-based development in offshore Nigeria; and the first usage of wireline retrievable ESPs in Nigeria

and second offshore installation in the world. The Company also drilled one of the longest extended reach wells in offshore Nigeria by an Indigenous operator with MD of over 10,300ft. Instrumental in its achievements have been the partnerships Oriental has formed with its technical partners, in particular Afren Plc, which is a partner on all three assets and Addax Petroleum which partners on the Okwok Field. It also works closely with Mercator Limited on its Floating Storage and Offloading (FSO) and its Mobile Production Unit (MOPU) facilities.

Major survey The past three to four years have marked the major turnaround in Oriental’s fortunes after the Company carried out an extensive seismic programme covering 348 square kilometres of ocean-bottom cable 3D seismic. The survey was concluded in 2012 and supplied the Company with valuable information. “We were able to utilise that information to help clarify the potential of Okwok and OML 115,” explained Camp. “The DPR has just approved our field development plan and we will embark on drilling two appraisal wells on Okwok and at least one on 93

t has been a rollercoaster journey for GPPS since it became fully operational in 2010, with 80 percent year-on-year growth to about $20 million revenue and staff numbers increasing from a handful to a 65-strong team looking after around 30 pipelines and facilities in Nigeria. The one-stop-shop pipeline maintenance and precommissioning specialists boasts of fresh technologies and methods which have received international endorsement from industry behemoths like Shell and ExxonMobil, helping to build a reputation which will allow them

to penetrate markets in the Middle East, North and West Africa. Chief Executive Officer, Obi Uzu, has brought his expertise on the technological side to GPPS from his prior endeavours, and his sights are set on becoming the best in Nigeria and West Africa in the shortest possible time. “We will become a multinational company in a few years, operating in five countries and looking to employ in excess of 250 people,” he said. “We will be a major player in Nigeria and West Africa.” Expansion Uzu has highlighted the Middle East and North Africa as strategically lucrative locations for GPPS to begin their expansion outside West Africa, and is in the process of discussing with future clients in the region with a view to opening up bases within the fourth quarter of the year. The proposal entails a joint venture with local partners in a deal which will see GPPS taking up to a 45 percent stake. “Western companies are trading in Tunisia, Algeria and Libya to a mind-boggling extent. We want a piece of the cake as well.” GPPS also plans to establish an additional two bases in West African countries which will help to

consolidate its leading position in the region Big endorsements GPPS’s outward expansion has been made viable by its rapid reputation building, crucial to which is its state-of-the-art technological processes built around wellmaintained brand new equipment, exceptionally experienced management team and highly trained and motivated workforce. “I have been in the business for 23 years, so I know what to improve on, in order to achieve impressive quality results,” he said.

Obi Uzu, CEO “Our dependable brand new spread of equipment enables us to safely complete projects much earlier than scheduled. This makes us a cheaper option.” One of its flagship technologies is its gel recipe - high viscous organic fluids used to flush out hydrocarbons from pipelines, clearing the way for cleaning and maintenance work. Uzu said: “You look at water and oil, they segregate in layers in static or laminar flow regime. If you apply our gel technology, you can push all the hydro-carbon in one flush even in a laminar flow rate.’’ 121

“I was part of a research team for gel technology in my previous work assignment. Our gel technology application makes it more efficient, environmentally friendly and overall better cost option for the client.” “Big companies like Shell, ExxonMobil and other IOCs in Nigeria have endorsed the gel technology,” he added. “They have been surprised at tested technologies available here in this part of the world.” GPPS is also using advanced pipeline monitoring equipment (instrumentation) that keeps them up to speed with what is happening in any given pipeline, including more precise readings of the rate of fluids, debris, pressure, cleanliness, detection of leaks and dryness in the pipelines. Reliable reputation Bolstering its reputation alongside its up-to-speed technological processes is an immaculate safety record and offerings of cheap and flexible business. Key to its safe standards is communication throughout the entire company and management’s lack of compromise on taking undue risks. “It is one thing to make good profits but we have to do it right and deliver it safely,” Uzu said. “You look 123

payments and able to cut costs by being based in Nigeria without head offices thousands of miles away. This is without diluting operating standards. Integrated services lines also makes GPPS a convenient onestop-shop, with services from precommissioning to cleaning, nitrogen services, de-oiling, facilities maintenance, and pumping among many others available. They also offer consultancy services and can operate onshore and offshore. Clearing hurdles Building up a reputation in a market with existing competition was one

of the initial challenges the company has faced up to. Finding initial capital at the onset is a problem being faced by many fledgling businesses in Nigeria today, and GPPS financed its early development through a series of joint ventures arrangements. “You can’t go to the bank and borrow money the way you desire if you don’t have the financial track record and support,” Uzu explained. “The interest on the loan could kill the business from the beginning.” Other hurdles included a lack of skilled labour in Nigeria along with poor supporting infrastructures which the government has to adequately address to boost more investment. Rigorous in-house training that involves internal competition between workers on a career tree system has incentivised the labour force to learn and move up the ladder by achieving clearly defined targets. “We need to hold people accountable and will reward the best, making sure we deliver the best services we can,” Uzu added. Having emerged on the right side of many potential barriers, GPPS can see light at the end of the pipeline and look forward to expanding into new and exciting markets in years to come.

nspections firm SGS Nigeria has invested in a new state-of-the-art research and distribution facility, as well as its seeds and crops division, in a bid to consolidate its position as industry leader. General Manager Micheal Moore, who has been with the company since December 2010, noted that the new laboratory for the oil, gas and chemicals division already has a solid reputation in the region. He said: “The laboratories in Lagos and Port-Harcourt are highly rated in Nigeria and West Africa. We provide quality control and troubleshooting expertise, and analysis using the latest versions of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), IP and other recognised industrial standards and specifications, with state of the art equipments and experienced trained personnel.” Moore was proud of the laboratory’s high-standards. “Our laboratories are yearly calibrated according to international standards. We have certified equipments and thermometers traceable to international reference standards, and we mobilise within the shortest notice to ensure that clients’ timing is met.

“We have completed an SGS laboratory information management scheme, and implementation will commence soon. Also, a preparation and target date has been set for ISO 17025 Certification. This combination puts us at the forefront and gives us an edge over our competitors,” he said. Services to soil The upgrade to SGS’s seeds and crops division, Precision Farming Services, has seen new machinery enabling an even better service. Moore explained: “The service has come to the forefront in agricultural requirements across West Africa, offering services unique to the region, and enabling farmers to accurately prepare new land for growing crops with 100 percent confidence of providing a good, healthy yield.” This is achieved by soil sampling, testing and mapping. SGS takes samples from a site, the location of which is indicated by a handheld GPS unit giving the coordinates. By testing these samples in the laboratory, the company can identify nutrient deficiencies and fertilisation requirements. Being the best SGS’s portfolio of services 127

Its motto “when you need to be sure”, provides peace of mind with integrity to its clients Solutions are tailor-made to fit a huge variety of demands around the world. SGS’s website explains: “wherever companies are in the world, we respond to their needs.” Moore said: “SGS Nigeria’s strength lies in its ability to draw on local talent as well as international technical competencies, networks, databases and a 130-year industry experience. “We aim to be the most competitive and productive service organisation to maximise the benefits in terms of cost, reliability, safety, quality, scheduling and warranty by utilising an established single source management.” He also praised the “integrity” 128

of SGS, and the innovative, entrepreneurial nature of the firm. Developing staff SGS prides itself on the quality of its staff, and as such has a rigorous process for choosing the best possible workforce. It ensures that candidates have the appropriate skills, and those that SGS focuses on particularly according to Moore include strong interpersonal communication skills, dynamism, the ability to innovate, and decisionmaking. The company desires for staff to remain with it long-term and always seeks to improve their skills through training, educational sponsorship and regular performance appraisal. their potential, SGS frequently reviews its employees’ talents to see if there are any further responsibilities or duties to which they would be suited. Environment Moore also enthused on SGS’s environmental services, saying: “As the world’s leading provider of these services, we offer testing, sampling, inspection, certification, verification and a comprehensive range of specialist solutions to help companies minimise their environmental impact.” SGS is looking to bring these quality environmental services to Nigeria in the coming months. “SGS’s vast experience and technical know-how is at the 129

elfaco’s commitment to social and corporate responsibility has seen it cope with threats that sent its competitors packing from the troubled Niger Delta long ago. At the same time it can now be credited with contributing to the re-emergence of smaller, local companies. Nigerian specialist service provider to the oil and gas industry Pelfaco Ltd has just celebrated its 25th anniversary, and after coping so well with the unique challenges of operating around the delta, is now looking to become a major force. It is also providing hope that the future of the region will be fruitful for local

businesses and the community. Its continued presence in the area has added to renewed confidence around operating there, with several new independent Nigerian oil companies appearing of late, requiring the company’s services. Business Development Manager Abraham Oriazowan, said: “We have been able to maintain good relationships with larger internationals as they know the quality of jobs that we deliver, and now Pelfaco is working with newer companies which are acquiring some oil fields from the majors”. He added: “But our existing clientele has remained, they have kept faith with us and we have remained; 133
