HAPPY 74TH BIRTHDAY!

REPARATIONS VS. SEPARATIONS By: Roy Douglas Malonson

Some people are true fans of the changes, especially when it comes to diversity and inclusion, that President Joe Biden has brought to the White House, but some criticize that his campaign promises, specifically ones made to the Black and Brown communities, were nothing more

than gimmicks to ensure he won the presidency. Recently, many feel a reported proposal from President Biden to pay $450,000 per family to migrants separated at the border under former President Donald Trump’s rule a slap in the face to Black Americans. Under Trump’s “Zero

Tolerance” policy in 2018, more than 5,600 children were separated from their families as the parents were federally prosecuted for illegally crossing the southern border. Because the Trump administration did not have a system in place to reunite the children with their parents, more than

1,000 families remain separated. But Biden has come out disputing that claim, saying those reports were “garbage.” The American Civil Liberties Union, however, said his administration did make commitments. The ACLU in a state-

We would like to send a “Happy 74th Birthday” wish to Deloyd T. Parker Jr., founder of Houston’s historic S.H.A.P.E Center. Parker has been the co-founder and executive director of S.H.A.P.E. since 1969. Growing up in Port Arthur, Texas, his parents, Mrs. Ruby Parker and Mr. Deloyd Parker, Sr., instilled in him a sense of humility, a willingness to help, the courage to face adversity, and the strength to fight injustices whenever and wherever it raises its ugly face. Parker worked in the Ujamaa Villages of East Africa and traveled to many countries in the eastern part of Africa, spreading S.H.A.P.E.’s philosophy. His most recent trip to Africa was in the summer of 2000. He went to The Gambia in West Africa where he met with the President of The Gambia and was able to expand relations with the government as well as grassroot community leaders. The initiation of the SHAPE Birthday cont’d philosophy was embraced by the page 6

Normalizing Abnormality Prostituting the truth is abnormality to the nth degree, because when individuals prostitute the truth they normalize abnormality and deviancy (sin). Christian Right Evangelicals, The GOP and White Nationalists Groups have become skilled professionals at normalizing the abnormal (lies, exclusion and sin) for White Privilege, because they desire something for nothing. Prostituting the truth is prostituting one’sself, and the devil has become the master of your being. Such individuals will do any and everything abnormal; even destroy the cornerstone of democracy (The Vote) by attempting to make the votes of minorities null and void, because of skincolor. Question: are Senators Manchin and Sinema wolves in sheep clothing? American democracy hangs in the balance

on the answer to this question, because when (48) out of (50) Senators are in agreement on democratic principles, policies and programs, and ungodly thinking obstructs the principle of majority rule something is drastically and radically wrong! Democracy oriented Americans; we need to get to the bottom of this issue quick and in a hurry before it is too late, because the flaw in American democracy has always been: White Privilege/ White Supremacy. No God conscience individuals are always asking the question: “what’s in it for me?” (Hebrews 11: 6) provides us with the answer: “Without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” That’s what in it for you, because individuals do not live forever. Believing that God exists is only the beginning; even devils believe that God exists. God will not settle for mere a c k n ow l e d g e m e nt of his existence. God desires your faith and personal relationship with him, because: “If we say that we have fellowship with him,

and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: but if we walk in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.” Christian Right Evangelicals cease lying to yourself in your ungodly attempt to make wrong, right by normalizing abnormality, because the Bible declares: “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him: and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.” God’s mercy and grace, the spiritual principles enshrined in the Preamble to the constitution, and the inclusive words enshrined on Lady Liberty are the cornerstone principles and values that have made America great, not White Privilege. The ungodly notion of White Privilege is destroying America and its democratic institutional structures.

Think About It By Dr. John E. Warren

Blacks, Veteran’s Day and Critical Race Theory Veterans Day was created as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. It became a national holiday by an act of Congress in 1938. As we honor the memory of those who served in this great conflict, separately and apart from other occasions honoring our War service members, let us not forget the special struggles of Black Veterans, especially during the years following World War I. We have seen from history that African Americans who fought for the freedom of others on distant shores, came home to disenfranchisement, segregation, and subhuman treatment on every front where they should have received respect and equality for having served. We have seen from a historical point that a

Black soldier named Charles Lewis, recently discharged from the military, was lynched in uniform in Hichman, Kentucky; in 1944, four Black soldiers after a white store owner claimed they tried to take over his place; in 1947, we repeat how Joe Nathan Roberts, a Black Navy Veteran, studying at Temple University on the G.I. Bill was abducted and shot because he wouldn’t say “Sir” to white men. What is so important about these stories today is that if “Critical Race Theory’’ is allowed to be implemented on the scale white legislatures and school boards are trying to do, to sanitize all discussion of America’s racist past, these stories will be lost along with the racist history they represent. Let us not forget that we have over 99 African American servicemen who earned and received the Medal of Honor in battle, fighting, and in some cases dying for a country who would only honor them when the flag was draped over their coffins and taps played at their graveside. Which is why I am pleased to introduce H.R. 40, the Commission to Study and Develop Reparations Proposals for African Americans Act. This legislation is intended to examine the institution of slavery in the colonies and the United States from 1619 to the present, and further recommend appropriate rem-

edies,” Jackson Lee wrote when the plan was released. “Since the initial introduction of this legislation, its proponents have made substantial progress in elevating the discussion of reparations and reparatory justice at the national level and joining the mainstream international debate on the issues. Though some have tried to deflect the importance of these conversations by focusing on individual monetary compensation, the real issue is whether and how this n a -

AFRAMNEWS.COM 3 tion can come to grips with the legacy of slavery that still infects current society. Through legislation, resolutions, news, and litigation, we are moving closer to making more strides in the movement toward reparations. Rep. Dan Crenshaw compared the amount to payouts received by families of veterans killed in the line of duty. “Biden wants to pay illegal immigrants $450,000 for their hardship while breaking our laws,” the Houston-based congressman tweeted. “For perspective, if a service member is killed in action, their next of kin gets an insurance payment of $400,000. Let that sink in.”

Has Biden become one of many politicians who have pandered to minorities to solidify votes? Many Black Americans feel there have been zero attempts to support mental, emotional, and physical trauma related to racism in this country. Blacks have been fighting forever for justice and compensation for the trauma endured to no avail. Hispanics Is it time for Blacks and Hispanics to bond politically and in the community to create agendas for our people, and work together to hold all leaders accountable? In the end, is it about money for reparations or separations? Or is it long overdue for unity on all fronts? - AANI

COMMUNITY

TRAVIS SCOTT GIVES BACK

By: N.L. Preston

It’s always good to see when celebrities give back to the community and Houston’s Travis Scott has really been going above and beyond. The rapper’s Astroworld Festival kicked off over the weekend and, while in town for the event, Scott made his way around town doing good deeds. On Wednesday, Scott presented a campus garden to the students at Young Elementary School in the Sunnyside community. He said he was inspired to do this because of the garden his grandmother, Miss Sealie Terrell, grew during his childhood. Terrell proudly joined her grandson for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “We grew up not too far from here on Rosehaven. She used to have a garden in her backyard that looked similar to this,” Scott said. “All she did was make flowers for people around the neighborhood and for family and mostly for anyone that asked, so it’s kinda crazy that we’re able to bring this to the elementary school and allow kids to have that same

experience.” The rapper’s nonprofit Cactus Jack Foundation presented the garden in partnership with the Houston Independent School District. According to Scott, Cactus Jack Gardens will give students the opportunity to learn about agriculture, gardening, food and nutrition. “Hopefully, you know, it gives these kids some sort of inspirational thing to do every day, and kind of help them look forward to the future,” Scott said. The principal of the school says the garden will be used as a teaching tool to promote healthy eating, showing students there are more yummy options out there instead of just fast food. The HISD Nutrition Services’ Get Growing Houston program teamed up with Scott’s Cactus Jack Foundation to install gardens at Alcott, Bastian, Rucker and Wesley elementary schools, Attucks and M.C. Williams middle schools and Washington High School. The community garden is one of the

many stops Scott made before his twoday concert at NRG Park. His foundation also presented a new basketball court in Sunnyside and on Thursday, Scott held a celebrity softball game at Minute Maid Park. About Travis Scott: “Travis Scott” was born Jacques Bermon Webster II on April 30, 1991 in Houston, Texas. From ages one through six, he lived with his grandmother in southeast Houston. Later, he moved to Missouri City to live with his parents. His mother worked for Apple and his father ran his own business. His father is also a soul musician and his grandfather was a jazz composer. Travis attended Elkins High School and graduated at 17 years old. During high school, he participated in musical theater. He went on to attend the University of Texas at San Antonio, before dropping out his second year to fully pursue his music career. His stage name is the namesake of a favorite uncle combined with the first name of one of his inspirations,

Kid Cudi (whose real name is Scott Mescudi). Throughout his career, he has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards and won a Billboard Music Award and a Latin Grammy Award. Scott began dating media personality and businesswoman Kylie Jenner -- of the Kardashian f a m i l y dynasty -in April 2017. On

February 1, 2018, Jenner gave birth to their daughter, Stormi Webster. Jenner appeared in the music video for “Stop Trying to Be God,” from Scott’s third studio album Astroworld. They broke up in September 2019 but quarantined together d u r i n g

the COVID-19 pandemic for the sake of their daughter and ended up rekindling their relationship. On September 7, 2021, after weeks of speculation, Jenner revealed that she and Scott are expecting their second child. - AANI

Because of its deep commitment to the community, S.H.A.P.E. has actively sought ways to oppose injustice and to better the community for all people. The community center was founded because Houston’s Civil Rights Movement needed a place that could give birth

Today, S.H.A.P.E is fondly called “The United Nations of the Hood,” for bringing together people of varied affiliations, for the improvement of the community.
