who police the police? “Addressing Current & Historical Realties Affecting Our Community”
BLACK LIVES DON’T MATTER
By: Roy Douglas Malonson
I’m tired of seeing Benjamin Crump at the microphone. I’m tired of seeing him on television holding news conferences. Not because I don’t like or respect the man, it is because I now know that when I see the civil rights attorney, it means another Black person has been killed in either a racially-motivated incident or at the hands of police. Seeing Crump is a constant reminder that a bounty is still on our heads and BLACK LIVES STILL DON’T MATTER! If it is not clear to you yet, it should be. How in the hell is it that while, what could possibly be the trial of the decade is being held in Minnesota (the murder of Houston’s George Floyd), another police officer in the state killed an unarmed Black man. But no matter where you are from, the eyes of the world are upon the police, yet they still have no problem gunning down a Black man or woman - for no other reason - than being Black. This time, the picture looked slightly different, the crying mother standing next to Crump was not a Black woman, but she joined the ranks of the other ‘Black lives matter’ parents because her biracial son, Daunte Wright, had Black blood and in the eyes of the police, his life did not matter.
Katie Wright, the victim’s mother, described the last day she spoke to her 20-year-old son. He called to tell her he had been pulled over by the police, and she said she had no idea it would be the last time she would speak with him. She wasn’t plagued, however, with the fear Black mothers typically have when they hear the words “police” and “son,” she thought everything would be OK. “I said ‘OK, when the police officer comes back to the window, put him on the phone and I can give him all our insurance information,’” she said. “A second goes by, and I hear the police officer come back up to the window and ask Daunte to get out of the car. Daunte asked, ‘For what?’ The police officer said, ‘I’ll explain to you when you get out of the car.’” The mother said she could hear the police and her son struggling. “Then the police officer asked him to hang up the phone. Three or four seconds went by. I tried calling back to back to back because I didn’t know what was going on,” she said. Still, the mother did not think her son’s life was in danger. She thought, worst case scenario, Black Lives cont’d page 3
THEY STILL DON’T CARE By: N.L. Preston
Do you need further proof that we don’t matter? The Kenosha, Wisconsin police officer who shot Jacob Blake seven times, leaving him paralyzed, is back on the job. On August 23 last year, officers responded to a 9-1-1 domestic disturbance call. When they arrived to the scene, they tried to detain Blake, who was not cooperating with them and, instead, continued to try to get inside his SUV, in which officers saw children inside. That is when Officer Rusten Sheskey shot at Blake’s back seven times when Blake opened the driver’s door of his vehicle. Three of Blake’s sons were in the backseat at Don’t Care cont’d page 6

‘Why can’t we all get along?’ American society is overly characterized by materialistic values; even though, it is constitutionally structured upon spiritual values. This stark reality difference between what America says and what America actually does is the difference between God and the devil, truth and a lie, night and day and Trump and Biden. Herein is America’s real spiritual problem as embedded in the Rodney King question after the LA Riots in April 1992: “why can’t we get along”? Is the answer to the question grounded in the belief that most Whites believe that Police Departments are the “first line of defense and protection for them against minorities? When in fact in American society criminality is an intraracial phenomenon! Material values engender external values and external lifestyles. Hence, external values produce selfish hoarding, rather than generous sharing based upon
the spiritual philosophical principle of: “I am my brother’s keeper”! Thus, the love of things (creature comforts) is a dangerous love, because you love something that cannot love you, and your greatest human need is for love. you just might be a fool! Love called us into being; even though, we are conceived in sexual-pleasure, but God has said: “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee,” (Jeremiah 1: 5). Life belongs to God, and God determines when life begins or ends. Ours then is an individualized spiritual journey in search of why God allowed each one of us to be called into being (existence). Work is a spiritual sacred command from God, and life and living are not free gifts. Therefore, if you desire something for nothing, what you will receive is nothing, and nothing from nothing leaves nothing. Unfortunately, Christian Right Evangelicals, GOP, and Trump Loyalists desire something for nothing, because they want others (minorities) to work for them based upon institutionalized discriminatory White Privilege. Hence, The System is structured to work for the system,
and the system is controlled by White males for White males. It was designed that way in the beginning, but in the twinkling of an eye God can change things absolutely today, because God can make the first last, and the last first. In the beginning it was against the law to teach slaves to read or to teach them how to analytically think, only demand that they do physical work and ask no questions. Thank God for a few spiritually enlightened Whites who taught slaves to read the Bible, and the spiritually enlighten slaves taught other slaves. Yes, it is a fact that Whites are more educationally advanced than Blacks; not because Whites are more innately intelligent, but because of racial discrimination. Even in the 21st Century some White Americans are seeking material values, seeking to deny Blacks the Civil Right to vote, and the human dignity of work. But God: “For by grace are we saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it the gift of God: not of works, least any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2: 8-9). Therefore, our salvation is of GOD based upon spiritual values, not material values! - AANI

MEGHAN DESCENT INTO MADNESS Ken Burns’ PBS special further cements Ernest Hemingway as a phenom, a monstrosity. He was like all of us in the final analysis, a summation of our contradictions and strengths. He was not an angel and he was a mere mortal. While watching this tour de force, I thought of damaged geniuses. Miles Davis comes to mind. Especially how he was gripped with paranoia at the end of his days. Miles originated from a rich and dysfunctional family with a powerful father who couldn’t stop the fights with Miles’ mother Hemingway was prophetic when he wrote, “Ask not for whom the Bell Tolls.” According to Hemingway’s critics, he began to believe his own press his own BS. The celebrity persona
brought the groupies and they heaped lavish praise upon him. He was a demigod of fiction and creative writing. That is the problem with celebrity - separating the man from the myth. It is a mistake to get too far away from being an ordinary man or woman. Extraordinary is OK, but it is not advisable to stay away from the ordinary man too long. The ordinary man is demythologized every day after he makes ROLL CALL. One of the problems with CELEBRITY is that you can never be anonymous. You can never be private because too many people know your face and your work. In London and Vancouver, these metropolises are secular cities but you can find your party even behind dark glasses. Life events can attack you like a ruthless band of bandits. Lovers and friends can leave, and loneliness and despair can’t attack you like a band of ruthless jump out boys. Ask Van Gogh, he literally took a razor blade and sliced off his left ear and nearly bled to death before a medical intervention. Madness cont’d page 5
GREATER HOUSTON EDITION Black Lives cont’d he was getting arrested. “When I called back, the girl that he had in the car answered the phone, and it was on FaceTime. And she was crying and screaming and said that they shot him. And then she pointed the phone towards the driver’s seat and my son was laying there, unresponsive. That was the last time that I seen my son,” Katie Wright described. “That’s the last time I heard from my son. And I’ve had no explanation since then.” So, what happened? What did police have to say? Police in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota - where the shooting occurred -said Wright was initially pulled over for an expired tag. Bodycam footage shows that after Daunte Wright stepped out of the car and then got back in, Officer Kim Potter said she was going to use a Taser on him. She didn’t grab a Taser, instead she grabbed her handgun and opened fire. “Oh sh*t! I shot him!” she could be hear saying. Potter, who is white, says it was all a mistake, but not many are buying her story. “I cannot accept that. I lost my son. He’s never coming back,” the victim’s father, Aubrey Wright, said during an interview. “That doesn’t even sound right. You know, this officer has been on the force for 26plus years. I can’t accept that.” Congresswoman Maxine Waters (DCA) even publicly questioned the mixup of the Taser and handgun. She also spoke about the toxicity between police and the Black community. She released a statement that read, in part. “I am deeply horrified by yet another police killing of an unarmed black man – no more than 14 miles from where Derek Chauvin stands trial for the murder of George Floyd. Despite the worldwide protests and the increased scrutiny of policing practices, Daunte Wright, a young man who so feared for his life that he called his mother during the stop, is dead following what was just a minor traffic incident. Daunte’s mother now joins a painfully long list of women whose children have fallen victim to emboldened police officers who hide behind their badge.
April 18, 2021 “It is the unfortunate reality that driving while Black, running while Black, walking while Black, sitting in your vehicle while Black, bird watching while Black, serving in the military while Black, and quite frankly – doing anything that any other person could do, but doing it while Black, is dangerous and all too often ends in death. How many more of our sons and daughters must die for a so-called traffic violation? How many of our neighbors must die for a so-called counterfeit bill?” So again, Crump was again in front of the cameras, standing by a family who lost a loved one due to police violence. Sadly, he was already in town for the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than 9 minutes. Floyd’s family left the trial to meet with the Wright family outside the Minneapolis courthouse. “They thought it was important that they give comfort to Daunte Wright’s mother and family,” said Crump, who is now representing the Wright family. Philonise Floyd, George Floyd’s brother, said his family stands in solidarity with the Wright family. “The world is traumatized, watching another African American man being slayed,” Philonise Floyd said. “I woke up in the morning with this on my mind. I don’t want to see another victim. It’s a time for change, and that time is now.” But will there be change? You’re still not blind, are you? When you have one ounce of recognizable Black blood in you, many police no longer recognize you as a human being. They are locked and loaded, with weapons aimed at your heart and ready to kill. Why? Just ask the families of Eric Garner, Alton Sterling, Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Walter Scott, Philando Castile, Stephon Clark, Breonna Taylor and, of course, George Floyd. Like we told you, to them, Black lives still don’t matter. Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton will be delivering Daunte Wright’s eulogy at New Salem Missionary Baptist Church on Thursday. Sharpton’s organization, the National Action Network, will also cover the funeral costs. -- AANI

KNOW YOUR HISTORY
SUPERCENTENARIAN RICHARD OVERTON
By: Nevaeh Richardson
During a time where we are stressing that “Black Lives Matter,” we want to celebrate the life of a Texan who definitely had a life well-lived. In this week’s “Know your history,” we’d like to tell you the story of supercentenarian and veteran Richard Overton, a Texas native. Richard Arvin Overton (May 11, 1906 – December 27, 2018), lived to be 112 years and 230 days old. He was the oldest verified surviving U.S. World War II veteran and the oldest man in the United States. He served in the United States Army. In 2013, he was honored by President Barack Obama. He resided in Austin, Texas, from 1945 until his death in 2018. Overton was born in Bastrop County, Texas, to Gentry Overton, Sr. and Elizabeth Franklin Overton Waters. Overton gained media attention during the 2013 Memorial Day weekend when he told Fox News he would spend his Memorial Day “smoking cigars and drinking whiskey-stiffened coffee.” Overton had been known to smoke about a dozen cigars a day. On that same Memorial Day, Overton met with Texas Governor Rick Perry. Overton was also invited to the White House where he met with President Barack Obama, and to the Veterans Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, where he was singled out by name for praise by the President. During an NBA game between the San Antonio Spurs and the Memphis Grizzlies on March 24, 2017, Overton was honored during a half-time break. Overton is the subject of a 2016 documentary, Mr. Overton, in which he is interviewed about his daily routine, thoughts on his longevity, and his military service. On May 3, 2016, he became the oldest surviving American veteran after the death of
Frank Levingston. On May 11, 2016, Overton became a supercentenarian. Following the death of Clarence Matthews (born May 1, 1906) on July 22, 2017, Overton became the oldest living American man. Overton was hospitalized for pneumonia in December 2018. He was placed in a rehabilitation center, where he died. - AANI

TAMIR RICE: TIME TO HOLD SOMEONE ACCOUNTABLE The family of Tamir Rice is still seeking justice in the death of the 12-year-old who was shot and killed by Cleveland police in 2014. The family has asked the Justice Department to reopen the case, which was closed during the Trump Administration. On Nov. 22, 2014, Tamir was playing with a pellet gun outside a recreation center in Cleveland. A man drinking beer and waiting for a bus called 911 to report that a “guy” was pointing a gun at people. The caller told the dispatcher that it was probably a juvenile and the gun might be “fake,” but authorities claim that information was never relayed to the officers. Officer Timothy Loehmann and
Officer Frank Garmback arrived at the scene and the 12-year-old was killed. In December 2015, a grand jury declined to bring criminal charges against the two officers, claiming video of the shooting was of too low quality for them to see what exactly took place. Rice was Black, and the police officer who shot him was white, and the family says that is the reason the Trump Administration shut it down. “I’m still in so much pain because no one has been held accountable for the criminal act that took his life,” Rice’s mother, Samaria Rice, said in a statement. Pressure is being put on Attorney General Merrick Garland and the
Biden administration to begin publicly delivering on a commitment to combat racial discrimination in policing. Will they? - AANI
Was it because of an argument with fellow giant-artist, friend and lover Paul Gauguin? Hemingway and the 27 club, Hendrix, Cross ROADS Delta Johnson, Morrison, Joplin and others could not stop their avatars from leading them to descend into a brilliant madness. Charlie Parker’s “BIRD LIVES” anesthetized himself into the next world by overdosing at age 33. One fellow writer and analyst said that no insecure overachiever can compensate while standing in quicksand. Really, forget your critics and don’t be overly concerned by what the citizens of Nutbush think of you. Your family and three friends – YES - but not the gallery. St. Augustine said, and I paraphrase, be careful of what you love because you become what you love. And now we come to the crux of
the matter. Duchess Meghan Markle made Oprah and all of us freeze and blink when she said in the interview, “I did not want to live.” Did she know that Nikki Giovanni transversed the mental universe when she said, “treat yourself well and you can treat others well?” The Crown (monarchy) is important, the Prince and Queen are important, the British people are important, however, why be flipped by their conception of you. A grown woman submitting to a scheme of having to ask an employee if it is permissible to go to the Doctor is unacceptable in 2020 or 2021. A royal mother is denied security for her children and innuendo floods the ether about how “brown” your unborn baby would be. Because the world has color anxiety, the world starts soul searching. Our shining prince, Malcolm, knew color anxiety as “ whites disease.”
Now Doctors are addicting you to powerful anti-anxiety drugs. I am sympathetic but worrying can’t change destiny. “Mind candy” can’t change destiny. Hemingway couldn’t comprehend that fat meat was greasy, and that alcoholism was progressive and fatal. BB King told Queen Elizabeth how to fight the hounds and alligators with the Blues. “If you want to keep on flying, don’t look down at the ground.” No one can make you feel inferior unless you give them your permission. Even if Hemingway’s daddy descended into madness and committed suicide, he could break the grip of celebrity and become an ordinary man and live. I am musing about a complex matter. I admit that I am somewhat unsure that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. I do know that in another episode
