Here we go again, the Republicans are scheming to find more ways to attack the Black vote and they are using the “law” to hide behind.

The election reform bill that sent Democratic lawmakers leaving their states and heading to Washington in an effort to stop it has been passed on to Texas Governor

Greg Abbott’s desk after the state House and Senate gave approval on Tuesday. We all know that Abbott is a Donald Trump fan and is hell bent on stopping any minority – or Democrat – from seeing any forward movement. Abbott and his antics are trying to take us back to the Jim Crow days, and Senate Bill 1 is just one way of doing it.

It is clear, Republicans are still angry that the Black and Brown votes were powerhouses in last year’s historic election, helping to “undo” the mess this country made by allowing Trump to become president. People just automatically assumed that Hillary Clinton would gain the presidency that they did not vote as they

should, and we see the outcome from that disaster. After four long years of Trump, people dismissed fears of the COVID pandemic and did what was needed to be done to keep Trump from getting a second term.

The world came to know a beautiful, bouncing baby boy by the name of Wendell Carl Baker on Febru- ary 14, 1946 in Bay City, Texas. Born to proud and devoted parents, Jerdie Mae Holland Baker and Milton Garland Baker, Wendell was reared in Littig, Texas, where he obtained all his formal schooling in the local public school district through graduation.

Critical Race Theory and the Whitewashing of America It was not enough that 47 states have introduced over 500 bills that will limit the time, places and rights to vote in America, as well as allow states to change voter results in those elections that Republican legislatures “feel” had fraud.

Without the recent attack on “Critical Race Theory,” it would be possible, for years to come, to show how a racist right wing White America abolished the voting rights of millions of Americans, many of whom happened to be people of color.

What is now being called “critical race theory” is not new. It is the very fabric of a legal system which has passed laws for over 100 years, based on limiting the rights of people based on race. It was the essence of the effort in the framing of the U.S. Constitution to count slaves as a fraction of a person rather than

as a total human being. Race theory was behind the passage of the 13th,14th, and 15th amendments to the U.S. Constitution in order to ensure that “all people are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights.”

It took those amendments to include all people, regardless of race, just as it did with the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Acts of 1965. These legislative and legal acts certainly had race as the basis of the push for equality.

The present attack on the concept of critical race theory is another attempt by the same people who brought us Juneteenth as a Federal holiday: to wipe out future discussion of race in our educational institutions.

Such an effort in just a short period of time would mean, for example, there could be no discussion of the Tulsa, Oklahoma massacre which many are just learning about 100 years after the fact. There would be no discussion in our schools about Sand Creek or Wounded Knee and the slaughter of countless Native Americans, or the imprisonment of thousands of Japanese Americans dur-

ing World War II after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and we dropped the atomic bomb on the Japanese - but not on the Germans.

If legislatures and school boards can be successful with the abolishment of discussions of race by placing all such discussions under the label “critical race theory”, then we move closer to returning to the America of Jim Crow racism and possibly the apartheid that gripped South Africa with all the horror that came with it.

We as people of color must come off of recess. We must now sleep at attention and prepare to fight on a daily basis with all our thought processes and collective numbers.

We must read, watch, prepare to march, speak up and stand; as we did during the civil rights movement which brought us to the limited freedoms of today, but not full equality, yet.

Take a look at where you live. Take a look at what is being done to people who look like you and those who agree with you, regardless of their color.

Democracy: Voting Rights Voting rights is the moral-order cornerstone of democracy, because without voting rights/civil rights democracy does not exist.

This is precisely why voting rights should never be about partisan politics, but the preservation of democratic principles of governance. Congresswoman Liz Cheney and Congressman Adam Kinzinger recognized and understood the dangers of former President Trump’s “Big Lie.” Yet, without shame, they voted in lock step with all other GOP Representatives against the John Lewis Voting Rights Act: shameful. Of course, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act is not radicalized legislation; it is only designed to strengthen the Voting Rights Act of 1965, because of Trump’s “Big Lie.” Hence, voter suppression is an unlawful attempt on the part of White Privilege oriented Whites to nullify Black and minority cit-

izen’s voter rights, and consequently, circumvents true multi-racial democracy. Moreover, voting rights and economic justice are flipsides of the same coin.

Voting Rights is not political neither Democratic Party or Republican Party partisan politics; but it is American democracy, chosen by the people, of the people, and for the people: one person, one vote. Christian Right Evangelicals, The GOP, and White Nationalist Groups are mentally tripping-out, because minorities are becoming the majority population. These White Privilege oriented groups do not want to lose perceived socio-economic privilege over the economic structure of American society. What they fail to understand is that only a small minority of White Privilege oriented males control and will always control the pros and cons of the system. Know this: the system works for the system that is the individuals that control the system. Fear not White Privilege oriented Americans; it is highly unlikely that Blacks and other minorities will ever control the socio-economic system-structure of American society.

GREATER HOUSTON EDITION SB 1 cont’d are trying to undermine the system and create obstacles for the people who became “gae changers” in the face of adversity.

SB 1 is expected to do several things, including ban 24-hour voting, drivethrough voting, unsolicited applications for mail-in ballots and will change protections for poll workers, among other things.

Abbott says the bill will “solidify trust and confidence in the outcome of our elections by making it easier to vote and harder to cheat.”

Here’s a quick snapshot breaking down of the bill, as outlined in the Texas Tribune: Ban drive-thru voting During the 2020 elections, voters were allowed to cast ballots from their cars. That will no longer be allowed.

Harris County was first to test this method during a summer 2020 primary runoff election with little controversy, but the county faced heavy Republican scrutiny and backlash after this method was used for the November general election.

September 5, 2021 New regulations for early voting hours, including a ban on 24-hour voting Early voting hours will now be from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., outlawing the 24 hours of uninterrupted voting Harris County offered at a few polling places for one day during the 2020 election.

The legislation also requires more counties to provide at least 12 hours of early voting each weekday of the second week of early voting in state elections.

That’s currently required of counties with a population of 100,000 or more.

SB 1 will lower that population threshold to 55,000, expanding hours in smaller, mostly Republican counties. The bill also adds an extra hour of required early voting hours for local elections, moving it from eight hours to nine.

Ban distribution of mail-in ballot applications SB 1 will make it a state jail felony for local election officials to send unsolicited applications to request a mailin ballot. That same

punishment applies to officials who approve the use of public funds “to facilitate” the unsolicited distribution of applications by third parties, which would keep counties from providing applications to local groups helping get out the vote.

New ID requirements for voting by mail Under SB 1’s new ID requirements, voters must provide their driver’s license number or, if they don’t have one, the last four digits of their Social Security number on applications for those ballots. They must also provide those numbers on the envelope used to return their completed ballot.

A correction process for mail-in voting SB 1 creates a new process allowing voters to correct their mail-in ballots if they are at risk of being rejected for a technical error. Voters could make those corrections online through a new online ballot tracker that was previously approved by the Legislature. The legislation will also allow voters who make errors on

AFRAMNEWS.COM 3 the mail-in ballot application itself to make corrections.

Poll watcher protections SB 1 would also make it a criminal offense to obstruct the view or distance the poll watcher “in a manner that would make observation not reasonably effective.”

Currently, poll watchers are entitled to sit or stand “conveniently near” election workers, and it is a criminal offense to prevent them from observing.

SB 1 also requires training for poll watchers and allows them to be removed from a polling place without warning if they violate the state Penal Code. A previous version of the bill only allowed them to be kicked out for violating the law or the election code after receiving one warning.

Establish monthly citizenship checks The bill will require the Texas secretary of state’s of-

fice to compare the massive statewide voter registration list with data from the Department of Public Safety to pinpoint individuals who told the department they were not citizens while obtaining or renewing their driver’s license or ID card after registering to vote.

Creating new rules for voter assistance The bill would establish new requirements — and possible criminal penalties — for those who assist voters who need help filling out their ballots, including voters with disabilities. The person assisting must fill out new paperwork disclosing their relationship to the voter. Assistants must also recite an expanded oath, now under the penalty of perjury, stating they did not “pressure or coerce” the voter into choosing them for assistance.

Republicans feel they are creating a “playbook,” that doesn’t mean we will allow ourselves to get “played.”

CROCKETT’S MAYOR

DR. IANTHIA LYNN FISHER is the current Mayor of Crockett, Texas, the first elected African American and the first African American female to serve in this positon. She is currently serving her second term in this capacity. It should be noted that she was preceded by former Crockett City Councilmen, the late Selmus Curtis, a great educator and Crockett businessman Elmer Murray, both African Americans, who were both appointed May-

ors finishing out unexpired terms of elected mayors. We do applaud them for serving the City well during their short tenue as Mayor.

Prior to becoming Mayor, Dr. Fisher was one of the most successful educators, community leaders and an ordinated minister of God with a lifelong commitment to helping her home town in so many important ways.

She was recently reelected to the Mayor’s

position, unopposed, in my opinion, after serving as one of the best Mayors in the history of Crockett, Texas. Her holding the position of Mayor has been so inspirational to all of the cities and towns in East Texas. One observable effect appears to be that African Americans are voting in East Texas at a higher level since the election of Dr. Iant h i a Fisher

and her serving in her hometown of Crockett.

Dr. Fisher, since her first election in May of 2019, has been instrumental in getting so many good things accomplished for the City of Crockett and the citizens who live in Crockett and East Texas.

On a family note, her husband, Jimmy Fisher, retired Chief of Police of Crockett, was the first African American to serve

as Chief of Police in Crockett. Together they are the parents of some strong talented children who are very proud of their parents success.

Additionally, she comes from a strong family led by her parents the late Sis. Earlie Groves of Crockett, a true leader and woman of God and the late Oscar “Son” Groves. Her sisters, Dr. Helen King of Huntsville, TX, Dr. Brenda Atchison of Dallas, TX, Victoria Essien and Dr. Ruth Waston-Houston

of Houston, Texas are all true leaders in their own rights.

Her brothers Billy “Hollywood” Groves and Rev. Oscar Henderson of Crockett are both men of God who have great respect for their sister.

que debemos asegurarnos de mantenernos en contacto con ellos y mantenernos positivos. Ha estado inundando toda la frontera y nuestra gente está perdiendo la pequeña propiedad que tienen.

Están perdiendo casas, coches, animales y familia. Necesitamos mantenernos fuertes y seguir siendo positivos y ayudar tanto como podamos.

In addition to her many accomplishments, she is the Chief Operating Officer for the Groves Educational Foundation, a non-profit organization, which recently hosted its Annual 35th Juneteenth Celebration on the foundation grounds located on Martin Luther King Jr. Street in Crockett.

With the current legislation declaration of the 19th of Juneteenth as a federal holiday, it was a true validation of the many years of services that Dr. Fisher has put into keeping the Juneteenth County celebration alive.

I asked her what she thought about her job as Crockett’s Mayor and her other accomplishments.

She stated: I guess I should say that first, it’s important to know who you are and what your values really are before you take on any public servant assignment. It is so easy to get sidetracked by so many outside influences. So I have learned to walk by faith. “I believe that God is the creator, Jesus is my Savior and the Holy Spirit is my guide.

important than things and should be treated in that order. I believe that developing real relationships is the key to good communication.

I believe that a city can only operate at its highest level if it is a “shared responsibility”.

I’ve learned that my campaign slogan “Building Bridges” is more than a slogan but it’s a commitment.

Metaphorically speaking, I found that bridges are necessary, they are not easy or cheap to construct but are the most effective and efficient ways to get things done and that they must be monitored and maintained continuously. Meaning that communication and building relationships are like bridges, they are always evolving. Lastly, I learned that infrastructure is more than a buzz word, it’s a concept. While we may think of it in its smallest terms, it really encompasses the whole process of city development; inclusive of its people, businesses, and projects. That in order to develop sub-

stantially, one must have infrastructure which is nothing more than a solid foundation.

This has been my greatest challenge, insuring that we are building on a solid foundation. In terms of accomplishments, I believe that I have been instrumental in insuring that a systematic process is developed and followed. Thus insuring that anything that we accomplish can be duplicated or expanded upon, regardless of who is in charge. We’ve accomplish numerous projects, but I think the greatest thing that I can say about my accomplishment is that under my tenure the healing has begun. We once again can proudly view ourselves as members of the City of Crockett, Paradise in the Pines. I think I want my legacy to be not about me, but more so about how I enriched the lives of those that entrusted me with the administration of their city. AANI

Wendell set his sights on higher education, following in his father’s footsteps by matriculating at his beloved Prairie View A & M University, where he studied Animal Science. Upon earning his bachelor’s degree, he continued toward his most auspicious life goal of becoming a veterinarian.

Wendell entered the renowned Tuskegee Institute’s College of Veterinary Medicine, then and currently the nation’s only veterinarian medical school that resides at a Historically Black College or University. Dr. Wendell Carl Baker, Sr. successfully earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1972.

Dr. Baker honorably served our country by devoting the next four years of his career to the United States Army, where he worked as an Army veterinarian. Most of all, Dr. Baker gained tremendous joy from educating the next generation of agriculturists, animal scientists, and future veterinarians. He returned to his Alma Mater, Prairie View A & M, and taught agricultural science from 1976 through 1984.

September 5, 2021 Manager. Over these eight years, Dr. Baker had the distinct privilege of working under the leadership and guidance of the legendary veterinarian, Dr. Alfred N. Poindexter, who instilled in him great confidence through hands-on experience while also demonstrating the spirit of giving back to the generations that follow.

The university classrooms and laboratories kept Dr. Baker intricately connected to his craft, which eased his transition of launching a private practice. In 1978, he opened the Baker Veterinary Clinic in Prairie View, where he treated all types of animals, large and small, in addition to establishing a specialty in equine and acupuncture and dentistry. Additionally, Dr. Baker was a pioneer in the field of white-tail deer DNA testing. Most notably, Dr. baker continued his commitment to growing and developing new and future veterinarians by intentionally hiring recent graduates and or interns from Prairie View A & M, as well as the Tuskegee Vet School. To his credit, hundreds of veterinarians, mostly African Americans, were trained under Dr. Baker’s tutelage and achieved their dreams through his nurturing

guidance.

Those who knew Dr. Baker well, know that he never declined a challenging case on a sick or injured animal. He was highly motivated by tough cases that were brought to him in the middle of the night or those that were so dire that a house call was required for treatment. Many of his clients boast about the special touch and great skill he applied to their animal when they were in the worst health or in a heightened emergency situation.

many interests and hobbies. He was a true outdoorsman and rarely missed an opportunity to enjoy the activities that afforded him immense satisfaction ad relaxation, including horseback riding, hunting, bay fishing, gun-shooting and target practice, and designing leather goods. Most of all, the time he spent with his family and closes friends was most cherished. He especially enjoyed watching classic western movies and

attending rodeos with his grandsons.

Wendell is preceded in death by his mother, Jerdie Mae Holland Baker; his father, Milton Baker; sister, Mable Ann; and son Wendell Baker, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory and continue his legacy a devoted wife, Annette Baker, step daughters, Maya Rutledge (Jason) and Arianne GaffordJackson; step-son, Kevin Murrell; grandchildren, Ashton Baker, Jaylon Lindsey, Javar Tompkins, Jamari
