What You Need to Know About the NRA!!!

It is a pleasure to serve you once again in providing information in a format, that sifts through the mass media manure, and extracts facts and information that may prove to be useful to you and your loved ones some day in the near future.

of research on you own about the organization, if not, I will try my best not to talk above your head, because I want you to get these FACTS.

Between writing the previous paragraph and now, I have made several other stops, all within the area of Martin Luther King Blvd. in South Dallas near 175 and 30.

These stops were made rather quickly and in the process, the direction I thought I was going to take this article in, has taken a sharp turn. I was about to start out with the History of the NRA, but if you are anything like me, back in the day in high school, as students, we used to battle with our teachers all day about history homework and lessons. We did it so much, the teachers would threaten to put us out of the class if we didn’t hush. We were mostly debating with our teachers, at the age of 14 and 15, about why Christopher Columbus is so celebrated in this country. Later in life, I found out, Christopher, who was from Portugal, went to Spain, couldn’t even speak proper Spanish.

Here we go: FACTS 1. 40% of NRA members are women 2. 40% of NRA members are

comprised of mostly Asian and Hispanic women 3. The average age is between 40-45 4. Letter to the Editor: I sincerely appreciate the article you wrote in the African-American News&Issues dated July 10-16, 2017 page 3 titled ‘Blacks Should Stop Supporting People Who Don’t Support Them!-- My sentiments exactly (although we cannot do that with every business).

I wholeheartedly agree with you to some degree since many businesses we have to patronize others. As I am a small private Black business owner and at times have express the sentiments with clients and friends.

I do live in Acres Home and due to a stroke (& age 68) is now in semi-retirement. But presently, I am the Group Leader of a social club with 30+ members, (age 55+) whereby we attend events such as brunches/ dinners/concerts/ movies etc. once every 4 to 6 weeks. Everyone knows how I push supporting Black businesses ( i.e. Dorian’s, Ester’s, Lucille’s, Renae’s, Red Rooster, Chicago Bar&Grill, Martini Blu, along with attending Alvin Aileys Dancers, 40+ fashion shows, Black plays etc.)

I know you all are used to the “Straight No Chaser” type of tone. So, here goes…I’m going to try my best to be a bit more sensitive and minimize the sarcasm.

The Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1, 1863, which means, the NRA was established nearly 9 years later. (9 / 9 millimeter).

Veterans established the NRA -, and according to the NRA Website, on the about page, it was due to their disappointment in the marksmanship of the Union troops that fought in the war, to help free slaves.

Now I don’t know how many of you reading this, who are in at least your 40s and older, recall the Son of Sam shooter, David Berkowitz. According to wikipedia, pursuit of this serial killer was one of the biggest manhunts in the history of New York City. He was going around with a 44 caliber gun, shooting young innocent couples.

This was back in the Summer of 1976. Now if we look at the numbers again, 44 is a multiple of 11. Remember earlier when I mentioned there is an 11 year difference between now, and 1871 when the NRA was established. Bicentennial year means 200 years since the American Revolution that freed us. 1+1 = 2 in the 11 we got from establishing earlier, 146 years have passed since the NRA was created.

And if you look at the exact date they were established, that would be November = 11 and the day of the month=11.

As a child, I was haunted by the Son of Sam killer being on the loose. I was only 9 years old.

I, as well as others have discussed wanting to hire/attend a Black business to manicure our nails as well as our lawns— but can’t find any Blacks doing this or they are not located in our neighborhood. What can we do as a community to get these and other Black businesses back in our neighborhoods.

Can you check with our Black salons to see if they would be willing to invest in a ‘nail shop room or nail chair’ with the same competitive prices as the Asian shots that most of us Blacks go to?

Bring back those days-but with a real twist of seriously try to get back that Black business by letting the ‘Beauty Schools” know we are advertising for Black students to consider. This may even lead to another way of Black scholarship fundraising for those interested in doing nails.

Where are our Black man who can cut our yard but won’t. Everyone does not have books sense to continue higher education by going to college. But most of us have a God-given talent that may or may not be Continue on Pg. 3

Petitions Have Power Draft The Standard View Billy “Hollywood” Groves

In our highly technologized world, it’s amazing that petitions still have a lot of power. For starters a petition can be used to unite a community in a way that is positive and very unique. If there is a credible dangerous situation facing citizens and nothing is being done to address the situation, a petition is something that can bring everyone together to confront and possibly defeat this threat. It allows everybody the opportunity to sign their name on a list to express their thoughts on the problem. When that petition is sent to the people or the system they are opposing, it has a very strong wake-up effect on them.

Additionally, the fact that those petitions can also be sent to different governmental agencies such as: The Texas house of Representatives in Austin, Texas; the FBI Civil Rights Division in Washing D.C, The United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division in Washington D.D, and even your local government.

Furthermore, the use of petitions allows the media and other significant sources outside of the petitioner’s local zone to become aware of the situation. In other words, it gives the petitioner and the people the assurance that “The world is seeing what is going on around here mentality”.

Despite what a lot of people think, the Black community is not a monolithic group of people who all think the same way. We have different churches, different religions, different life styles, different aspirations and different mindsets throughout our communities.

However, the signing of a petition by all of those people signing their names signifies that all that are signing the petitions are expecting the same results.

In a way a petition can be compared to voting. It is actually a “street vote” which makes it as strong as or even stronger than our traditional voting processes.

This is true because of the large number of Black people and other underrepresented groups who have lost their right to vote because of prisons, parole and probation problems from the U.S. Judicial system and other voting barriers.

hidden. Most Black beauty school/beauticians fare very well if they are good, just as most Asian nail salons we go to and Hispanic they cut our yard and remodel our homes.

Why not hold a community meeting to help organize getting those and other Black businesses to advertise more intensively in your paper saying how her and Blacks.

Like you say, I don’t know of any Asians or hispanics that have hired Blacks to work in their shops-yet we continue to patronize them. And why isn’t someone asking them why since we support them and no we shouldn’t have to speak their language. Will you and other community leaders help to make something happen or should we continue to watch it exist?

Genuine Hard Work is a True Virtue!

The 16th President of the United

States, Abraham Lincoln once made reference to a thought that is very true in nature. In it he shared that,

“

Things may come to those who wait, but only the things left by those who hustle.”

I couldn’t agree with him more and would like to share with the loyal audience of African-American News&Issues that genuine hard work is a true virtue. If you really want to have something in life and that can relate to anything, YOU MUST WORK HARD! There is no substitute. Especially in today’s society, many people believe that because we live in the microwave age that everything will just come to them and happen instantly, but that is just not the case.

I often stress emphasis on members from our community going to get mis-educated and getting to the point where they think that they have arrived.

Unfortunately, when this happens, oftentimes these degreed misinformed Negroes are met with a sad reality. We MUST Understand that, a piece of paper don’t mean anything, if you have nothing to back it up with.

I have a serious problem with members from our community thinking and feeling that they are now too good to do the same type of jobs that their parents and grandparents raised them doing.

Many of our mis-educated college folk have earned their degrees off of the salaries of, janitors, garbage workers and the likes thereof.

However, suggesting that they work in the same field to gain some type of work experience is beneath them. There was a time in our history, when Black folks were only limited to construction, maid, cleaning and low-end jobs; but somehow with all of this mis-education and advancement of society these occupations are no longer considerations for our people. As a result, Hispanic-Americans and other races and cultures are racking up all types of money that Black folks are leaving laying on the ground, only to run to the nearest unemployment office.

We MUST Understand that nothing will ever replace the value of genuine hard work. Now, by no means, am I against education or have a problem with people going to school to better themselves by attaining knowledge. Some of my best friends, acquaintances and associates are possessors of Master’s and Doctorate degrees.

But, if you were to sit down and talk with them, they will share with you that it was a long journey for them, trying to reach any type of pivotal level of success. They did not just blossom or inherit hefty positions, they first had to work hard, with their degrees. In most cases, many of my degreed friends were inspired to get excel to higher levels of education, because of their ethic of working hard, first. Yet, it appears that many of our people either have not been taught or just simply don’t understand the basics of Success 101. Because all brains and no work experience or history will only get you nowhere fast.

We MUST Understand that working and obtaining higherlevel positions is very similar to credit-building. Most of the time, if a person doesn’t have any type of credit; it is virtually impossible for them to obtain credit. So you have to start somewhere. It is very simple to me, go out and work to

secure a life for your family and yourself.

While I am on the subject, I am reminded of a situation that I heard which took place at H-E-B. There was a young man who went to school and secured employment within the company. This young man came on the team with a degree in hand; however, he was made to work as a bagger. Since then, he has paid his dues within the company and has evolved into a manager, but he first had to start at the bottom in order to work his way to the top. My point is, while he was equipped in one aspect with the knowledge, he did not have a work history to accompany it.

This has been the case in many times, and it has a lot of our mis-educated folk ignorant to the fact that having a strong work ethic speaks volumes for you.

When a person has a degree and nothing else, it is simply telling a perspective employer that you went to school. It does not suggest that you will be an all-star worker just because you have earned a degree. But, having a solid history of work experience takes things to a totally different level, because it shows that you are willing to work hard and has some type of integrity while doing it.

Concluding, I would like to echo the words of Colin Powell.

He once said that, “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.”

We must prepare our next generation to understand that nothing in this life will come easy for them.

The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman. The most unprotected person in America is the Black woman. The most neglected person in America is the Black woman.”

In 1962, minister and human rights activist, Malcolm X, uttered these poignant and profound words. Today, fifty-six years later, his words still rang true. Despite Michelle Obama having served eight years in the White House as America’s first African American First Lady, despite Black women being the most educated demographic in the United States, and despite the Harvard Law Review electing its first Black woman president, Black women continue to be devalued and underappreciated for the fruits and labor in which they have brought forth and continue to bring forth in America.

Malcolm X’s statements serve as a painful reminder of the history of Black women in America. For centuries, Black women have been oppressed, locked out, and barred from enjoying the same privileges as their non-Black counterparts—and at times—their male counterparts. Whether it be the maltreatment endured during slavery, the disenfranchisement experienced during the Jim Crow era, the disparities that exist today with the gender wage gap, or the

objectification of the Black woman’s body in hip-hop lyrics and rap videos, Black women have constantly been on the receiving end of some of the worst treatment in society. Yet, they persist and carry on, because they have been taught and conditioned to persevere no matter the circumstance.

American writer, feminist, womanist, and civil rights activist, Audre Lorde, once proclaimed, “I am a Black Feminist . . . I recognize that my power as well as my primary oppressions come as a result of my blackness as well as my womaness, and therefore my struggles on both of these fronts are inseparable.” When she made this bold statement, Lorde was acknowledging and bringing awareness to the hardships that Black women face, as well as to the power and strength that comes from being a Black woman. She came to terms with the reality

that most Black women learn to reconcile, and that is that they are both Black and female, and with that, comes obstacles and burdens to bear. Thus, there is both pain and triumph found in Black womanhood.

Black women have been conditioned by society to believe that the kinkiness of their hair, the melanin in their skin, the fullness of their lips, and the curves in their waists are unattractive and undesirable traits. Likewise, Black women have been led to believe that they are “imposters” when they seek higher education and are often labeled the “Angry Black Woman” when they show any sign of emotion or discontentment. Yet, it has been the Black woman who has cultivated society and been its backbone.

During slavery, it was the Black woman in the house nurturing her slave owners’ children, during the Civil Rights Movement, it was a Black woman who refused to give up her seat, and in 2017, it was Black women in Alabama who came out in droves and elected Doug Jones to the United States Senate. Yet, society tells the Black woman that her Black is not beautiful (although it is often imitated), it treats her as if she has not carried an entire Nation on her back for centuries, it makes her feel as though this is a man’s world and she is just living in it, and it ignores the contributions that she has made and continues to make to the country she has helped to build and sustain.

However, two women from Houston, Texas have decided to change the negative and disparaging narrative that has far too

often been associated with African American women. Kandice Webber, a registered nurse and Black Lives Matter activist, and Nisha Randle, a PR specialist and co-founder of Houston Rising, organized the Houston Black Women’s March. When asked why there was a need for such a march, Ms. Webber said, “I was looking for a way to center and celebrate the voices and concerns of Black women. Like many Black feminists, I felt excluded from the mainstream Women’s March and have grown tired of seeing the work done by Black women go unnoticed and unrecognized.”

Indeed, history has proven that the concerns and issues of Black women have not always been at the forefront of the mainstream movements. On March 3, 1913, the Women’s Suffrage Parade was held in Washington, D.C. The event was scheduled one day prior to President Woodrow Wilson’s inauguration to “march in a spirit of protest against the present political organization of society, from which women are excluded.” Organized by activist Alice Paul in support of a constitutional amendment guaranteeing women the right to vote, the parade was geared toward suffrage for White women and not Black women or Black men. Paul quietly discouraged Blacks from participating in the parade, going as far as saying, “As far as I can see, we must have a white procession, or a Negro procession, or no procession at all.” Despite the fact that the right to vote was no less important to Black women than it was to Black Continue on Pg. 5

women, are socialized to believe that there is a finite number of us who can succeed. As a result, we are taught that other Black women are our competition. It’s important to us that we erase that narrative and we become our sisters’ number one fan.”

At the start of the rally, Ms. Webber informed the crowd, “If you are standing in front of a Black woman, you are standing in the way!” Indeed, it was both a bold and an assertive statement. Yet and still, it was true. March 3, 2018 was a day set aside for Black women. They had traveled too far and overcame too much for anyone to stand in their way, both literally and figuratively.

men and White women, African American women were told to march at the back of the parade with a Black procession. Still, the twenty-two founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. marched, becoming the only African American women’s organization to participate.

Thus, despite the many obstacles and challenges that Black women have faced and continue to face, the Women’s Movement has not always been welcoming or accommodating of the Black woman’s struggle, her voice, or her plight.

During her 1972 bid for President of the United States, U.S. Representative Shirley Chisholm (NY-12), the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first Black woman to run for president for a major political party, stated: “Of my two handicaps, being female put many more obstacles in my path than being Black.” To some, it may seem odd that Congresswoman Chisholm would refer to her gender and her race as “handicaps,” which may have indicated that she had an impediment or obstacle of some sort. However, it is not uncommon for Black women to view themselves through a double conscious lens, because for so long, Black women have been taught and led to believe that their gender and race determines their standing in society.

Pointedly, Congresswoman Chisholm noted that being a woman and being Black both present their fair share of obstacles, but it is her gender that posed the most barriers in her life. Yet, in terms of the Women’s

Movement and the different Waves of Feminism, Black women have often been deemed an afterthought. It is as if the Black woman’s experience in America does not equate to or is less important than the experiences of her non-Black counterparts.

Moreover, it is equally interesting that society socializes us to believe that “one size fits all” in regard to women. However, no one woman is the same. They all have different experiences and struggles. Especially, Black women. They are not monolithic, and their struggle should not be treated as such. Yet, many believe that the mainstream movements do just that.

On Saturday, March 3, 2018, exactly one hundred and five years after the Women’s Suffrage Parade, nearly two thousand Black women, men, and children gathered at Emancipation Park to commemorate the first annual March for Black Women—which many have already deemed the start of a movement and a revolution for women of color. The March for Black Women was born out of the need for Black women to celebrate their womaness, their blackness, and their progress. Surprisingly, there were many non-Black allies in attendance who came to show their support and stand in solidarity with Black women as they embarked on their new revolution.

When asked what her goals were for the Black Women’s March, Ms. Randle said, “I want to highlight the underrepresentation of black women in leadership roles in the political, economic, and social institutions in this country. Black women, more so than other

daughter, and LaTreshia Hamilton handed out information and stickers for the “Good Ol’ Girls’ Club” on behalf of Annie’s List, an organization aimed at recruiting, training, supporting, and electing progressive women to office in Texas; vendors from Melanin Monroe Boutique sold fashion merchandise; and representatives from ROADwomen, Texas Organizing Project, and the Harris County Democratic Party were also in attendance.

Black women were networking, taking selfies, catching up with old friends, and having sister-girl moments. Women expressed themselves through their hairstyles, clothing, and signs and posters. For a moment, it was as if every Black woman in attendance was already acquainted and were just catching up like old times. However, the only thing that most of the women had in common was the common bond they shared—their blackness and their womaness. To see all of the different shades, shapes, and sizes of Black women scattered across Emancipation Park was truly a sight to see! It was beautiful. It was healing.

CYPRESS - Author, poet, teen mentor, entrepreneur and motivational speaker, Stephanie Lahart, penned a piece encouraging our young Black men to aspire to greatness. She wrote, “Dear Young Black Males, You’ve got so much raw talent that’s within you.

Utilize it and make your money!

Don’t allow your gifts to go to waste. You don’t have to just sit back and watch other celebrities come up, get focused and get yours, too!

Grind and make your dreams a reality. Put in the hard work. Be dedicated to yourself. Create an online presence and put yourself out there where people from all over the world can witness your talents. There are so many platforms online that will help propel you to where you want to be. Get busy!

You know that you’ve got something special! Why not allow the world to see it? Don’t be afraid of success! Stop talking about it and be about it. Don’t doubt yourself!

Just go for it! GO HARD.”

Early on, Timothy, Sr. and wife, Shirley Pace began encouraging their young children to work hard and reach their full potential.

“College, military or hobo but you have to do something, because you won’t be allowed to just live off of us,” has been one of Shirley’s main selling points to motivate her son and daughter to excel towards greatness. She says, “We want our children to have better than what we did, so we began instilling work ethics in them very early.”

Since his induction into the arena of agriculture, Tim, Jr. has been dedicated to his task.

He begins his day at 4:30 in the morning and goes to the barn to tend to his animals. While there, he works his lambs out on the treadmill, walks, feed and nurtures them. After completing his day at school, he goes home to take a nap and then returns to the barn to care for his lambs. In the midst of balancing his passion, he still finds time to keep his grades afloat, insomuch that he is an honor student.

Through it all, Tim, Jr. has been blessed with the undying support of his parents, who are extremely proud of him and his endeavors. His mother expressed that he, “works very hard and is deserving of everything that he gets.” When asked about his journey thus far, Tim, Jr. revealed the following. “In raising sheep it’s like, you get out what you put in. Every day I go to the barn and work hard and manage my grades at the same time, I have an A and B-plus average in all my classes.

But it’s all about working hard and having that strive and determination for what you want - that’s what they have taught me. So, I appreciate my family, friends, my agriculture teachers, Mr. Taylor, Ms. Vaculin, Ms. Turner and everybody that supported through this whole ride.”

Tentatively, the talented young man has plans to compete in the district show in San Antonio as well as, returning to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo next year. He has set his sights on becoming a veterinarian and attending either, Texas A &M University or Oklahoma State University.

Dr. Williams united in matrimony with Oddie Lee Brembrey Williams. Unto this union one Son, Floyd Nathaniel Williams, II was born, a Minister also. Later he married Lola Jean Burkley Williams where he shared in raising four children: Edward, Norris, Mark and Kim Burkley.

Norris Burkley is a pastor in Galveston. He is currently married to Cuney Berryman Williams. Together they share the joy of life with two adult children. Edwina Mitchell Patterson and Lawrence Adams. Reverend Williams has twelve grandchildren and one great-grand daughter.

From the Hand of Loula I was born July 16, 1939 to Simon Davis and Patience “Rose “ Guillory Davis in LeonVille, Louisiana and was given the name Loula Mae. My mother, along with my two sisters, Semonia (Marie) and Genevieve (Jen), and myself relocated to Galveston, Texas, in 1946. I attended Booker T. Washington and historic Central High School, Where I graduated as an honor student with the class of 1957. I briefly attended Texas Southern University, and moved on to begin teaching at the Holy Rosary Catholic School of Galveston, Texas. After six years, I resigned from Holy Rosary and found a new passion as an accountant with the City of Galveston. On May 18, 1980, I decided to relocate to Houston, Texas, and embarked on a new career in the old and gas industry of which I worked for over 32 years.

“OK, I survived by my extended family and Parker Colorado and Atlanta, Georgia; Celina Hodge and Chalaine MacVittie, Jackie and Terry Hodge, Jenna and Pru Chelwick, hey you all know who you are. I leave friends and family from the oil and gas industry, where I had a blast, and my church family from St. Monica Catholic Church. I also leave my half-brother, Gerald Davis of Houston, Texas, and numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins.

I was preceded in death or in other words, those that left me by myself are: my parents. Simon Davis and Patience “Rose” Guillory Davis: sisters, Alberta Reed, Evelyn Rideaux, Edna Sonnier, Bernice Subject, Genevieve Davis King, Somonia Davis, and a half-sister Etha Davis Bergeron; a brother Joseph Guient; and I dear niece Marie Ards.” AANI

Frederick “Rusty” Foster Sr.

Frederick Foster Sr. was born September 21, 1959 in Houston, Texas. Frederick was raised by his parents Reverend Hobert Craig Sr. and Margjorie Craig. He was nickname Rusty by his dad. Rusty love the lord and joined Bright Star Baptist Church on the under Reverend C.L. Campbell, later he became a member of St Stephens Baptist Church under Pastor Dr. Paul D. Landrew. Rusty’s believe in God help lead his life as helped many with no expectation of receiving compensation. Many of his kind deeds and philanthropic acts have never been recorded. He was extremely proud of his annual school supply giveaway in honor of his mother a former head start teacher.

Rusty attended Bethune Elementary, Charles Richard Drew Middle School and George Washington Carver High School where he was an outstanding basketball player. He also was excellent and TV, radio repair and operating heavy machinery. From the marriage union of Frederick Foster and Kimberly Murray (Barnett) they were blessed with Frederick Jr, Kristina, Russell Keith and Kendrea. Rusty also raise his oldest daughter Cynthia Marie Sharp and was a father figure to the Da’Kari and Dey’Aira as he was a generous mentor to several family members, friends and neighbors.

Rusty began a welding apprenticeship under his father at Texas Pipe Building Company and later work for L.B. Foster for many years. He stepped out on faith and pursued his entrepreneurial spirit and began Fred’s Helping Hand.

He was the fourth of six sibling born to the union of Leonard Parker Sr. and Annie Baltazar Parker. His parents, two sisters Rosa Nowlin

and Martha Jones; brother, Leonard Parker Jr.; and daughter Mary Hawkins proceeds James in death.

James grew up in a traditional Catholic family and attended our Mother of Mercy Catholic School. He graduated from Booker T Washington High School, then enlisted in the United States Army. While in service, James received numerous awards and honors for expert rifle marksmanship. He was honorably discharged. Upon returning to civilian life, James studied Industrial Engineering at Texas Southern University.

While attending Saint Monica‘s Catholic Church, James met and married his wife Carolyn Malonson Parker. James often said that he fell in love with Carolyn watching her pray at mass. Their union was blessed with three daughters Mary, Shana, and Jamie.

As a member of the community, in the

1960s James personally sacrifice much to ensure ongoing desegregation at integration of all Aldine ISD. James also passionately supported the Democratic Party and was very politically active. He led and participated in campaign management teams, ultimately being instrumental in the election of many local, state, and national officials.

James was also a dedicated member of Saint Monica‘s Catholic Church. He was a member of one of the founding families of Saint Monica‘s, and a charter member of the Knights of Saint Peter Clavier Council 151. He coached the church youth baseball team, sang in the Voices of Praise Choir, and often gave heart and hands to many church projects. He was instrumental in the building and development of several church buildings including the new food pantry, and the rectory. James was inspired to join the

society of St. Vincent DePaul in honor of his late brother Leonard Parker Jr. Seeing the St. Vincent DePaul food pantry complete it was very important to James because he knew it would touch countless lives by providing food services throughout the Acres Home community.

James leaves a legacy of love to his beloved wife Carolyn Parker, daughters, Shanon Parker and Jamie Stein; brothers, Allen and Glenn Parker; granddaughters Natasha Phillips (Jermaine Phillips) and Meagan Hawkins; grandsons, Coleman, Luke and Zachary Stein; sons-in-law, Gene Hawkins and Kevin Stein; Godson, Eric Malonson; Goddaughter, Denitra Wynn; great-grandchildren, Rodney Thomas III and Talia Phillips; and a host of beloved cousins, sister and brothers-in-laws, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. New Deputy Director Names for Houston Permitting Center Houston Public Works has appointed Christon Butler as the new Deputy Director of the Houston Permitting Center. Chris was Acting Deputy Director since July 2017.

The Deputy Director of the Houston Permitting Center (HPC) oversees pre-development, plan review, permits, inspections and enforcement of the City's building and development codes. HPC is staffed with a trained workforce of over 600 employees and operates with an annual budget of nearly $85 million.

Historic Record for Primary Turn Out on Election Day

ith the Primary Election having taken place on Tuesday, final results indicate that Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee forged ahead with over 85% of the vote in her rebid in the Democratic Primary for the 18th congressional district seat. With 38,000 total votes cast and two people in the race, she garnered a resounding victory with a historic 32,514 votes which included 92% of absentee votes, 86% of early votes, and a STRONG turnout on election day. Out of all of the races in Harris County, the 18th congressional race was the driving force in voter turnout for the election.

Earlier on March 13, Commissioners Court voted to negotiate with two engineering firms that will develop the scope of the work.

Dubbed “Complete Streets”

“Now I’m excited to see that the Commissioner is bringing safer, more attractive streets to this community of twin universities,” Mayor Turner said. “… If the improvements in these areas were just relying on the city, they would be highly incomplete. I want to thank him for this spirit of collaboration and cooperation with the city utilizing resources at his disposal in order to address many of the needs within the city and within Harris County.”

Precinct One is committing $15 million to improve infrastructure near TSU and another $15 million to projects around UH. The goal is to create streets that

are attractive and a source of neighborhood pride, while improving safety and accessibility to all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit riders.

In addition to roadway work, the project also includes drainage improvements, which will help reduce street flooding during heavy rain.

“This is a win-win opportunity for everyone,” Commissioner Ellis said. “Pedestrian and bike-friendly streets bring neighbors together and encourage healthy activity. I also hope that these improvements will help attract new businesses and jobs for communities in Third Ward.”

Councilman Dwight Boykins, whose District D includes Third Ward, also praised the city-county partnership.
