O

ne of life’s most heart wrenching and frustrating sights for me, is when I see young teenage girls pregnant, or caring for infant children they themselves have birthed. Too often I have witnessed the frustrations and sometimes anger displayed by pre-mature moms.

Too much I have seen their lack of hope and inner disappointments carried out on their completely innocent children.

It makes me wonder, what is her mindset? What are her inner emotions, what is her hope and what does the future hold for them, both mother and child?

She more than likely does not fully understand or comprehend the tremendous responsibility and accountability for that innocent child she carries or cares for. And how could she? She is only a child herself. She maybe herself is living with parents or relatives.

Depending on her age and situation, there may be programs to help feed and house them and provide some medical care But, the issue and reality is far deeper than that. For when children themselves have children, a completely innocent life and living soul is brought into this world, without request.

No child comes into this world wanting a single parent home, not knowing who his or her father is. No kid wants to see their father only at Christmas maybe with a gift. Children come into this world clueless and unaware and deserve more. Kids need to be brought up in caring homes and want the kind of loving relationships and mature mentoring

that comes with dual responsible parenting.

So how do we as a country, as a society of “western culture” address or try to remedy this problem? My first inclination is “God only knows”. But is that me being cowardly? Do I view it as hopeless? No, I think not. Part of the answer, I feel, lies in ones self worth and self values. Our young girls, at an early age, have to know and understand that they are more than sex objects.

They have to be taught and learn that their greatest asset is not between their legs. Then they themselves must commit to restraints and self-controls.

Realize and understand the value of just saying no. Stop using what they possess bodily as a means of enticement and attraction. It must be instilled within themselves self pride and respect, and then become determinates of their own futures.

Look and “see far”. Know and realize the consequences that come with the choices they choose.

I write this not pointing a finger at the female gender only.

But I believe that is where it starts. For how will a boy, soon to be man, begin to respect a female if she does not first respect herself and display self control of herself. We have all seen the Maury and Dr Phil type of shows where a young female is trying to prove fatherhood. Then heaven forbid, she is wrong, the audience goes wild and the mistaken mother runs off the stage crying and embarrassed. This may be good entertainment I suppose but what does that say for the female and more important, our society.

A change of direction in these conditions, situations and occurrences is possible, and is very much needed and necessary.

Discover Your Purpose

A

s a man of God, I’ve often told people that I wasn’t going to ever die. A lot of the people I’ve said this to, looked at me like I was crazy. I explained to them that the God I serve and the people who serve my God would not die spiritually but they will transfer to another, better world (Heaven).

While believing totally in the afterlife with God, I know God has plans for our lives, while we yet live on earth. So, in the meantime, I am asking everyone to seek the purpose that God has for their lives. I truly know that every person with common sense has a purpose, while they are living their human life.

That does not mean that everyone has to just play a “role” just to feel like they are living their life with purpose, this can be a very confusing way to live. The pressure of being a role model or trying to play a role that is not natural to you is something that most people can’t do.

However, when people find their true purpose in life and go and pursue that purpose, it makes their situations “Great”.

I am convinced that especially in our African-American communities and other American communities facing serious problems created by our nation’s history of mistreatment, people with positive purposes can and will make our current lives and the lives of our future generations substantially better.

A person’s purpose, in my mind, is probably the most natural attribute or talent that someone has. The satisfaction that it

brings you when you pursue and achieve your purpose is uplifting and you become a star, even to yourself.

This positive accomplishment is something that will never die or can’t be taken away from you by anyone. Sadly to say, these days we have witnessed world famous entertainers/superstars killing themselves. Most of the time because of their acquired status and the “big” money that comes with it, these famous superstars are often considered role models by the public, just because of the “role” they are playing. What seems to be missing is that they probably never had a “true” purpose that kept them wanting to keep on living.

No matter how insignificant people may think your positive purpose in life is, only you and God know that it has great importance. For instance, your purpose in life may be to feed the homeless, or register and inspiring people to vote, or help people in your communities get jobs. It may be something as simple as teaching people to respect their neighbors or helping people repair their homes or vehicles.

There are unlimited purposes that can be used to the betterment of others. To name a few others, one may include discovering ways to help the youth and senior citizens or just speaking out against injustices and racism against one’s neighbors, or by attending your local city council meetings, or by talking and communicating with your state and national governmental elected officers.

These are all wonderful purposes but I still believe that one of our greatest purposes should be our giving support for a true “role model” with a legitimate positive role.

Locked UpBut Innocent!

A

s a little girl, I used to want to be a lawyer. Who doesn’t like a good argument?

I have always loved analyzing things, proving things, and even arguing my point. This occupation was perfect. But then I grew up, and learned more about the process and our judicial system. I begin to question if the system really works. Now as an adult, I still question if our system really works.

There has already been too many unfortunate cases this year of people spending years on top of years in prison for a crime they didn’t commit. Take Quintin Alonso for example.

He was recently released from prison after serving 17 years for a crime he didn’t commit.

Seventeen years is a long time and sadly, he will never get that time back. The other sad part is that he was on track to spend the rest of his life in prison, because of someone’s mistake, or ignorance. Regardless to the cause, something is not right.

After 17 years, how do you pick up where you left off?

How do you mentally adjust being back in the world? How do you not feel anger for what you were robbed of? I can’t even begin to imagine what he’s feeling and what he’s been through.

Reading about his case has left me with three questions.

Is our judicial system effective? And more importantly, how many people like Alonso are sitting in prison for a crime they didn’t commit? And who do you hold responsible for this mistake?

As much as I respect those who work in the judicial system, I believe that there are gaps within the system that need to be closed. I do realize that it is not a perfect system, because nothing in life is perfect, but when innocent people are rotting in prison for a crime they did not commit is injustice.

No amount of money nor apologies can make up for what the person has lost. We are only here for a short time and time is precious. Our judicial system needs to do a better job of how these cases are processed.

There are many factors that contribute to someone being locked up, but innocent. This includes, false confessions, mistaken identities, and faulty evidence just to name a few. One thing we can be thankful for is DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid).

DNA has contributed to the release of many who were locked up but innocent.

According to The Innocent Project, 358 people in the United States have been exonerated due to DNA testing. Twenty of them were people on death row.

This makes me think about those who may have been wrongfully convicted before DNA came along, especially those who are serving life sentences, or who sadly those who are no longer with us.

We only have one judicial system. We can only hope that those that have to go through it are served properly, fairly, and accurately. I am praying for those who are locked up but innocent.

arter G. Woodson was an African-American historian, author, journalist and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. He was one of the first scholars to study African-American history and became the founder of The Journal of Negro History in 1916.

Therefore, if any man had a right to give advice and admonishment to the African-American culture, certainly he was one worthy of fulfilling that role.

We MUST Understand there are too many of our fellow African-American brothers and sisters blaming the White man for all of their problems and situations without taking into account the vices they have placed on themselves. I have said time and time again that we Africans living in America have come far but not far enough. The course of society has changed since the era that I came up with. As it is, our children are equipped with more resources and opportunities than that which those in my day had. However, sometimes having too many resources can serve as a handicap to people who are afraid to utilize them or just downright don’t want to change their circumstance.

My wife and I have operat-

ed as business owners for over 30-years, within that time we have had exposure to the likes of all types of personalities and characters. Throughout our experiences, we have realized that the African-American community is comprised of some of the most brilliant, highly-motivated and resilient people there is to find. On the contrary, we have also witnessed those who were lazy and wanted only what people would give them, with no desire to work for it. It is my belief that the latter of those are amongst individuals from within our communities who have no intent of rising above their circumstances.

As Carter G. Woodson conveyed in his book, The Mis-Education of the Negro this is the type of mentality that is crippling our communities and culture. He noted, “History shows that it does not matter who is in power or what revolutionary forces take over the government, those who have not learned to do for themselves and have to depend solely on others never obtain any more rights or privileges in the end than they had in the beginning.”

Too many of our children are being lost and left behind because there are those amongst us who refuse to get off of their a$$ and make things happen for themselves.

We MUST Understand opportunities will not just fall out of the sky for us. We have to make them happen. In some cases, people will have sympathy but in most cases it’s every man and woman for his or her self.

I often share my own personal story to encourage young people that there is nothing stopping them from aspiring and achieving greatness. In 1950 I was diagnosed with Polio which left me with certain physical limitations. Back then, the teachers

wanted to place me in special education classes. But, it was my father who refused to settle.

He said, “Yes, there is something wrong with your leg, but there is nothing wrong with mind.”

He also made that factor very clear to the teachers who made the suggestion of anything otherwise. So, instead of allowing my situation to cripple me I sought out various business ventures to occupy my mind and invest in myself.

At the age of 13, I opened a woodworking shop. I was made fun of because of my color, I was talked about because of my impairment. But, deep down inside I never allowed anyone to infiltrate my mind with the idea or notion that they were better than me because I had a disability. I was always reminded of my father’s voice, “there is nothing wrong with your mind.”

So, even though I had certain physical restrictions, I never allowed that to stagnate the ability of my mind. Therefore, I just want to encourage those from our community to never place limitation on yourselves and trust and believe that whatever your ailment or handicap is you have the power to overcome it – but first you have to empower your mind.

In closing, I would like to echo the lyrics of James Brown 1969 hit, “I don’t want nobody to give me nothing; open up the door, I’ll get it myself.” I encourage those from our communities to take heed to those words and the wisdom of the historic Carter G. Woodson. All we have to do is look within this current administration and it is not hard to tell that minorities are getting a raw deal out of government with Donald Trump as Commander-in-Chief. Therefore, it would behoove us to learn how to make and create opportunities for ourselves and our families.- AANI

Continued from Page 1 Within the field, she experienced much success as a realtor. Having always been equipped with a compassionate spirit, Toshia felt that success warranted the need to give back to the community in some way.

Accordingly, she purchased a plethora of hygiene products and created hygiene bags, enclosing each one with $5. Initially, her family was unaware of her intentions, yet, they took no thought in helping her put the bags together. Once the project was complete, the bags were distributed to a portion of Downtown Houston’s homeless population. She decided to couple her humanitarian efforts with creating a learning experience on benevolence, for her daughter and some her daughter’s peers.

As they assisted with delivering the bags, Hurd allowed them to provide community service, while teaching them about the less fortunate.

Formation of the Toshia Hurd Foundation After the initial project was successfully completed, she knew within herself this was something she wanted to dedicate her life to. Simultaneously her brother, Curtis Curley who was working at Exxon Mobil at the time, was inspired to educate and expose the community to hidden truths about Black culture.

As it was, his exposure to the international community through communication training and working with groups in project management served to open his eyes to a wealth of cultural knowledge. Therefore, he felt it was of necessity to share the knowledge he learned with those from the communi-

In the first learning experience, Curley showed a video of Africa. The video featured a trip he took to Kenya which displayed the elaborate skyscrapers, paved roads and other wonders of the country. During a recent interview he shared, “I was intrigued by what I saw as I begin to travel abroad, because things were very different from what I thought it was and had been taught.”

He continued, “I was only exposed to a lot of things because I went to school and worked with a lot of Africans at my job and they showed me this stuff. But, if I had received some of this knowledge when I was in middle or high school, I would have a better – or rather true view of the world. So, I felt I needed to structure some time in my schedule to invite people to my house and give them information I believed was valuable.”

Over time, those lessons evolved from him facilitating discussions ranging from cultural history, to personal development and financial literacy, amidst other topics he deemed pertinent to the community.

Once the pair started talking about their individual endeavors, Toshia suggested the establishment of a foundation.

Hence they merged the two concepts to create the Toshia Hurd Foundation. While it was established in 2015, the foundation acquired its 501c3 status in 2016.

The board of directors of the organization includes: Toshia Hurd, Mike, Curtis “Renzo” and Alisha Curley. The Toshia Hurd Foundation subscribes to a mission to, “give tactical advantages to youth by way

of education and unique experiences.” This goal is met through service, teaching and giving financially to empower the future generations.

Since inception, it has operated off of two key components, community service and education. The community service aspect is manifested through field trips and community projects.

The Toshia Hurd Foundation strongly believes, “Community service builds character and purpose by helping those who need the most help.”

Therefore, assigned field trips are planned to expose the youth to the various options the world has to offer them. Members are also actively engaging in the Complete Communities Committee initiative in Acres Homes by working with the local leadership in the community.

Toshia Hurd serves as the Community Chair for Beautification and Curtis Curley serves as Committee Chair for Civic Engagement. Most recently, the founder organized a neighborhood-wide cleanup comprised of 150 volunteers who went out in the Acres Home community.

The educational experience is delivered through means of a class dedicated to supplementing grade school education known as, The Compensatory Hour.

In this function, life skills, cultural history and logic are presented and taught in a classroom setting with the opportunity for students to interact.

also elaborated on. The class is free to the public and attendees have the privilege to earn a free computer for attending six classes. The foundation incorporated this incentive in the program due to the realization that many resident homes’ lack access to personal computers.

Challenges The foundation operates off of the expertise of like-minded, humble and sincere professionals who have a desire to do goodwill. Nonetheless, Vice President Curtis Curley expressed, “We are new to the non-profit world and are learning along the way. We are getting trained on how to get more people involved.”

When asked about challenges they have seen thus far he said, “We work and rarely do a good job at marketing. We are good as far as working with people, but we want to get more children and adults in the program; because on the educational side of things they add a lot to the conversation.

I’m not just standing in front of the class like a professor who knows everything - I like group learning. So, trying to get more people involved has been chal-

lenging for us, due to lack of time to recruit.”

Tentative Projects As part of the learning experience the foundation is anticipating a trip to the Emancipation Park to explain the significance it holds for the African-American community.

In November, the Toshia Hurd Foundation will be doing their annual hygiene bag giveaway.

The organization will also be participating in the Acres Home Tree Lighting in December.

Cheikh A. Jackson and Tyrese J. Skeene, charter members of Boy Scouts Troop 1906 of Prairie View, will be honored with their Eagle Scout Ranks, the highest recognition that Scouting offers to Scouts.

The Eagle Court of Honor is on August 12 at 4:00 p.m. in the Carden-Waller Auditorium at Prairie View A&M University. The public is invited to share in the celebration.

It was May 25, 2011 when the two young men and three others from Cub Pack 388 became the first members Troop 1906 sponsored by the Epsilon Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. All of the young men had in mind to become Eagle Scouts but Cheikh and Tyrese were the two determined to achieve this goal. This is a first for Troop 1906 and Prairie View after a twenty-year absence of scouts in the city.

After seven years of camping, leadership development and participation, family life and service to the community, the young men earned many accolades along the way including the 21 Eagle Merit Badges required for the rank. Additionally, they completed their required Eagle Project which addressed a need in the community.

Cheikh selected An AIDS/ HIV Awareness project that had some 40 persons being tested and educated on the disease. Tyrese’s project led to the painting and restoration of 22 Fire Hydrants throughout the City of Prairie View.

Both projects received rave reviews from the community leaders. Both scouts served as Patrol leaders and Den Leaders for Cub Scout Packs.

is headed to Prairie View A&M University as a Naval ROTC student majoring in Political Science with aspirations of becoming a Corporate Attorney.

During his early years, Cheikh was an active youth member of Mt. Corinth Baptist Church, Hempstead, Knights of Pythagoras (KOP) youth group of the Prince Hall Masons of Texas and the Go to High School Go to College Mentoring Program and Prairie View Volunteer Fire Fighting Association, Inc. Tyrese is the son of Dawnette and the late Hanzel Skeene and his headed to Houston Community College to begin his studies in Culinary Arts. His ultimate goal is to earn the Master’s Degree in Food Service Management and become an Executive Chef for

his own chain of restaurants.

During his early years, Tyrese has been involved as youth member of Community of Faith, participated in Backpack Drives, Highway clean-up projects, Mayor’s Family Day in the Park, the Special Olympics of Texas basketball camp and the Go to High School Go to College Mentoring Program.

Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church

For well over a century Brown Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church has existed as a historically religious landmark and sanctuary within the city of Houston. The spiritual institution was established in 1881, by ten motivated believers who were determined to win souls.

On July 10 of that year, they held an organizational meeting at the Francis Harper School located at the corner of Center and Court Streets, where the proposal for a new church to serve individuals in the West End and Chaneyville communities (Sixth Ward) was presented.

In recognition of the first leader to serve, the church was named in honor of Rev. Louis Brown Since its existence, Brown Chapel has remained as a beacon of light throughout the community and the city of Houston. With a rich history and a strong legacy of having a congregation that welcomes, accommodates and

serves all in brotherly love; the church has maintained its reputation of caring for the people. It has been known for meeting the basic needs of the community by having once served as a site for distribution of much-needed food supplies to needy families.

The congregation continues to minister to the social, spiritual and physical development of all people. Its Ministry to the Homeless provides food each month to Houston’s homeless.

The church has an active Women’s Missionary Society, YPD, Lay Organization, Children’s Church and Sunday School Department.

In May 2001 Brown Chapel was selected as the site for a made-for-TV movie about the life of rapper M.C. Hammer.

In November of 2012, Rev. Salatheia Bryant Honors was appointed as pastor of Brown, becoming the first female to lead the congregation.

The Prodigal Son Returns

I, Reverend Otis Lloyd Sr. (82), the Prodigal Son, has returned from Oakland, California to Houston, Texas, after 60 years. I was schooled here in Houston at Bruce Elementary, Phyllis Wheatley/E.O. Smith Junior High, and Phyllis Wheatley High School.

In 1954, I went to Oakland, California to visit my grandmother, Anita Lloyd and ended up staying. She took me to church and taught me the Word and of Jesus Christ. Ms. Lloyd, originally from Houston, Texas, moved to Oakland, California and helped form 3 Baptist churches. From her is where

I gained many religious ideas and furthered my education at that time at U.C. Berkeley College, majoring in Religion.

Through the Word of God, I began to see the image of Christ differently.

From the pictures I grew up seeing of Him, Christ was always depicted as a pale, blue-eyed, White male.

I learned from the 1st book of Revelation, 13. And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

Rev. Leonard Lee is a native of New Orleans, LA. He relocated to Texas in 2003. I presented this idea to the Baptist Minister’s Union in Oakland, California. They totally rejected and didn’t want to have any part of the idea. I voiced to them, “I can see the future generations need something like this. I’ll get on the street corners and praise God by myself!”

From that point on, I did so. I’d be on those corners singing, reading the Word, and praising the Lord. One of my main spots was the corner of International Blvd and 75th

St....and Hegenberger Rd. As the passersby strolled along, I’d hold up the image given to me and sing, “He’s Got the Whole World In His Hands”.

Sometimes people would sing along and listen to what I had to say. Other times, some, who didn’t and didn’t want to understand, called me many ugly names, beat, spit on, and someone even shot me.

I learned from the 10th chapter of Matthew, verse 22, Jesus said, “And ye shall be hated of all men for My Name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.”

Lebron James is the Black American Dream

By Marques Wilson Be your own boss. Maximize your brand. Control your narrative. In today’s sports landscape, and even in everyday life, these seem to be the 3 main tenets by which we can gauge the level of success achieved outside the regular measurables of awards and championships. To be able to accomplish all three is a rarity in this Age of the Social Media Dwelling, Smartphone Era, Court of Public Opinion Dominated Society to which the modern athlete is subjected to 24/7.

And then there is Lebron James

Arguably the most polarizing sports figure of the 21st century, his powers on the court

cannot be denied. For me personally, he is what you get when you throw Magic, Oscar Robertson, Larry Johnson, and a splash of Bird in a blender and season to taste(and yes, i PURPOSELY left that other guy everyone wants to compare him to out of my recipe). His accomplishments are well documented: Rookie of the Year, All-Star, Scoring champion, League MVP, All-Star Game MVP, Finals MVP, All-NBA Team, All-NBA Defensive Team, Olympic Gold Medalist, NBA Champion. His failures are also well documented: The Decision Part One and Two, 3-6 Finals record, the GOAT debates… But this isn’t what this discussion is about. This is more than measuring the accomplishments on the court and in the sport. This is about being transcendent and going beyond the sport and becoming a part of the Culture. About raising the standard for what it is to be a conscious, involved, forward-thinking, unapologetic, and trailblazing modern day Black man and athlete. About being your own boss, maximizing your brand, and controlling your narrative. The Modern Day American Dream.

Being your own boss is what we all dream of, to call your own shots, set your own value, dictate your own worth. While he has received more heat for this than praise or even ADMIRATION for being savvy enough and talented enough to pull it off, James has been keenly in control of his career trajectory since he first stepped on an NBA court in 2003. Was his “decision” to do The Decision{see what i did there?) the BEST decision in hindsight? Not really, but was there anyone else at the time that would have generated as much hoopla and suspense as Lebron did with what basically amounted to an extended press conference? And of course, everyone loves to vilify Lebron the GM, because it is widely accepted that Lebron hand picks his teammates and has had heavy influence on the rosters of all the teams he has been on. And all that has gotten him is 9 Finals appearances, including the last 8 in a row, with 3 titles victories. And only one losing season his entire career, in 2003.

But given the same opportunity, who wouldn’t take advantage of being able to pick our co-workers, set our own schedules, and dictate what gets done?

Maximizing your brand Getting the most out of your name, celebrity(or notoriety), stature, and marketability while the market is still desirous of you. Lebron has managed to secure a LIFETIME contract with Nike, multiple endorsements from everyone from Kia to Sprite to

Verizon, is a founding investor in Blaze Pizza, a minority owner of FC Liverpool, and has a multimedia company, Uninterrupted, which got a $16 million investment from Warner Bros.

He is about to begin working on the project for Space Jam 2.

He helped his wife establish a popular juice bar while in Miami. He has executive producer’s credits for The Wall, More Than A Game, and Survivor’s Remorse. He has acting credits for Entourage, My Wife And Kids, and Trainwreck. He has done voice work for Teen Titans Go!, the Simpsons, and the Cleveland Show. He is opening a public school in Akron and has been putting kids through college on his own dime for years. He averages about $86 million a year in total revenue, second among athletes in the world only to soccer star Ronaldo. Lebron is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, voice and agent of change, and business man the likes of which only comes around once in a generation… and never before seen to this magnitude in a Black athlete.

Controlling your Narrative

Being able to be properly seen or appreciated in spite of what outside sources or detractors may do to sway public opinion against you. In this regard, it becomes a matter of perspective as it applies to whether or not Lebron has “controlled” his narrative. While i dont think he really wanted the sentiments that a lot of anti-Bron folks put out there(sellout, not “clutch”, ring chaser, etc.), i think he and his team have done a masterful job of using said negatives to his advantage, and have kept him at the forefront of NBA conversations for the past 15 years.

Equally impressive is that, in this day and age of tweeting, snapchatting, and up-to-theminute invasion of privacy and

personal life, the ONLY negatives that you have about Mr. James are strictly based on what takes place on court. He is literally the living antithesis of every negative stereotype and connotation that is usually applied to young Black men. Product of a low-income single parent household, didn’t attend college, given an unGodly amount of money at an early age. Typically expected to indulge in excess, maybe squander his riches, get a few baby mamas, get caught up with the law or drugs or run reckless throughout the league?

Instead he is a brand that is on par with the Oprahs and Jordans of the world. He is the biggest star of the Millennial Generation, an activist with a voice that is equal parts defiant and inspiring, an instrument of change that goes well beyond the basketball court or the confines of his job.

So, as the younger folks put it, Lebron is out here living his best life on his own terms. He is not only great at his job on the court, as evidenced by the new $154 million contract that he has signed with the Lakers, but he is doing his job as a husband and father to make sure that his family is living their best lives as well.

His “decision” to basically join a lottery team in LA wasn’t his best option for success on the court, but for him to be able to let his wife pursue media opportunities and his kids to be able to attend top flight schools all in the same city that he works in? No losses to be taken at all with that scenario.

And at the end of the day, to be able to do the job you love on your own terms, provide and take care of your family, and give back to the world and create opportunities for those who need it, all while being uncompromising, unwavering, and unapologetically Black is the the stuff of myth and legend…Or maybe it’s just the American Dream.

Lone Star College recognized as a Top 10 Degree Producer for minorities

Diverse Issues in Higher Education has named Lone Star College a Top 10 Producer of associate degrees for minorities, ranking sixth nationally among all community colleges in the U.S. “Lone Star College remains committed to all students,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC chancellor. “Degree and certificate completion is a strong measure of student success and I am proud of the hard work our faculty and staff members put in to ensure our students have the very best instruction in the nation.”

Lone Star College also ranked fifth among the 1,100 community colleges nationwide in the 2018 listing for the number of minority students earning associate degrees in Liberal Arts and Sciences, General Studies and

Humanities, and sixth for students who earned an associate degree in education.

Houston has been cited as one of the nation’s most ethnically diverse cities and the LSC student population reflects that diversity. In fall 2017, 69 percent of Lone Star College students were either Hispanic, African-American, Asian or other.

The Hispanic population alone grew by 7 percent from fall 2013 to fall 2017.

“From the moment a student walks into the door, we are ready to assist them with academic advisors, counseling services and success programs to help them achieve their goals,” said Head.

The Diverse Issues in Higher Education Top 100 Degree Producers list is compiled by analysis of U.S. Department of Education reports submitted by

Texas Southern University’s Urban Research and Resource Center (URRC) announces its partnership with ACLU-TX for the purpose of reducing incarceration by 50%. More than half of the persons who are locked up in America’s prisons and jails are Black and Brown.

The partnership project is called the SMART Justice Initiative, a national project of the ACLU. Terri Burke, executive director of ACLU-Tx, is strongly committed to the initiative and brings national attention to the endeavor.

The Texas initiative was spearheaded by Anthony Graves who was wrongfully convicted and served more than 18 ½ years in prison for a murder he did not commit before his exoneration and release.

Today, Graves is an author, CEO of the Anthony Graves Foundation, and strong advocate for criminal justice. Graves

is a nationally renowned speaker and will bring his vision and passion to the initiative.

The initiative’s first project is the Speaker’s Bureau that trains second chance citizens to become criminal justice reform advocates and career development.

The classes are scheduled to begin in the fall at Texas Southern University’s Continuing Education Department.

Dr. Melanie Lawson, Director of the department strongly supports the initiative as a vehicle to move the country forward in changing the way we treat incarcerated people and those who seek a second chance. Serbino Sandifer-Walker, TSU Professor will teach the semester long course that will meet once weekly. Students who graduate the program will earn a certification from TSU and will be able to tell their personal stories to maximize positive impact.
