On a Personal Note

My Journey

W

hen I first came to African-American News & Issues in September, 2001, I had no idea what awaited me ahead.

Initially, I began working for A-AN&I as a carrier while attending college and working other jobs. As the years passed, I found myself becoming more engaged with the newspaper and often stopping by the paper just to hear Mr. Malonson crack a

TRIBUTES few jokes and spill a little wisdom.

It wasn’t until 2009 that I realized how much of an influence the Malonson’s had become in my life.

Prior to that time, I had only worked closely with Mr. Malonson in regards to Distribution and had not really interacted much with Mrs. Malonson except in passing.

In 2009, after the loss of my son and mother within a month apart, I knew the best thing for me to do besides exercising my faith was to stay busy doing positive things.

At the time, I was just trying to focus and keep my mind off of my reality. It was during that time the Malonson’s decided to bring me on full-time.

I began working nonstop and found a safe haven in Distribution and Journalism. In the process, Mr. Malonson personally mentored me in many ways - from writing, interviewing, photography and countless other areas. I remember one Saturday afternoon, we went outside and he literally got down on the ground and showed me the various angles and different ways to shoot the camera in order to capture the best photos of people.

As it relates to Mrs. Malonson, I had always admired her from a distance and always considered her as the Proverbs 31:10 kind of woman - virtuous. She always walked with grace and had a certain aura about her that commanded respect.

I used to call her an “ornament”, due to her stylish trends and looks.

However, the more I got acquainted with her, I realized that there was so much more to her than styles and trends. As we conversed with one another, I realized that she was just as wise and knowledgeable about life, the Black community, business and anything else in between.

Though the years, I have been blessed in so many ways by being under the tutelage of Mr. Roy Douglas and Shirley Ann Malonson. Until this very day, I regard them as secondary parents. I will forever be grateful for the influence and impact that they have placed on my life.

Letters to Honorees This past weekend the Acres Homes Chamber celebrated the career of Roy and Shirley Malonson. I have worked with Mr. Malonson for over 15 years he is the person most responsible for our presence in the community. He promoted the notion of a significant presence in the community that led to the purchase of land. Mayor Sylvester Turner is also a life long resident of Acres Homes and was also a major influence in our decision to build.

Mr. Malonson has been unwavering in his advocacy for education and accurately predicted that if we built a center the community would respond positively. Victory Center was out of space the first year we constructed the facility and also houses one of best models for an Early College in the country.

Victory Center has also served as a model for our other community based facilities.

I consider the Malonson’s good friends and their legacy will be felt for many generations.

of the Houston Independent School District, where she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1955 and also furthered her education at Texas Southern University.

One of her first “semblances’’ as a legend came following integration; at that time, she became a “Door Opener” to help create job opportunities for Blacks in Corporate America. In the 60’s she was strategically selected as 1 of 3 first Black people hired in the Data Processing/Computer Department at First City National Bank, the largest bank in Downtown Houston.

By the time she retired as Assistant Vice President/Consumer Loan Officer, Shirley Ann had become a proud symbol of success to local Blacks around Houston. Pastor F.N. Williams recently affirmed this fact in a video tribute to the duo.

“First City National Bank was the first to hire a Black woman as an officer in the bank. Mrs. Malonson was the first Black woman and she rose to official status. So much so, they made her attractive - they put a red carpet on the window and put her in the window - where the public could see her as they passed down the streets - main streets and there she was, sitting at her desk. And as a result of that many of us deposited our monies, our means, our church monies at that bank. She is a first, and we certainly applaud her for that…Paving the way for other Blacks to be involved in banking…Carry on Mrs. Malonson you are still doing a good job!”

– Pastor F. N. Williams, Sr. Antioch MBC Roy Douglas stems from a family of 11 and was raised in the Acreage Homes community by his father John Curley Malonson. Despite being stricken with polio at six-months of age and walking with braces to help correct partial paralysis; his vision to succeed remained undeterred.

Encouraged by his father and equipped with his own measure of volition, Roy Douglas initiated an entrepreneurial journey as early as age seven.

From his savings of shining shoes, recycling bottles and later apprenticing as a wood-worker; he purchased his first home at the age of 16. Before graduating from George Washington Carver High School in 1968, he had become a master trimmer and sole owner of Roy’s Woodworking Company, the forerunner to the much-accomplished Malonson Construction Company. He later attended the University of St. Thomas. By the year 1980, he was named to a short list of

America’s best remodelers and builders, the only African-American to be included at that time.

Building an Empire Following, Roy Douglas took all of his earnings over the years and invested in land, buying two acres adjacent to a third acre he had his eye on.

Negotiations with the owner, Shirley Ann developed into a friendship, marriage and eventually a dynamic business partnership and a phenomenal community-engagement relationship. After marrying in 1982, the couple established Malonson RS Ranch in Acreage Homes on 23 acres of land.

Several years later, after Shirley Ann’s retirement and the recurrence of Post-Polio Syndrome health issues emerged for Roy Douglas; the couple decided to transition from the construction industry to devoting more time to community service engagement and the inception of several new business ventures.

Thus, the Malonson’s established Shirley Ann’s Black Art & Kollectibles Showroom, the largest Black Art & Kollectibles Showroom in Texas and one of the largest in the nation in 1992.

In 1996, the Malonson’s founded African-American News & Issues, the largest African-American newspaper in Texas with a Black perspective, addressing current and historical realities. Two years later, the Dynamic Duo set out on a mission to ensure pizza was delivered throughout the African-American community. Consequently, they purchased two Domino’s Pizza restaurants and later controlled a total of ten in Houston. Once their objective was met, they sold the restaurants.

In 2004, the couple purchased a 251-acres ranch from the legendary race car driver A.J. Foyt Jr. in Waller County, becoming one of two African-American Whitetail Deer Breeders in the nation. In 2013 Shirley Ann’s Flower Shop was incepted. The following year RS Deer & Cattle Ranch was birthed in Waller County.

Economic Impact As community organizer’s the Malonson’s founded the Acres Home Citizen Chamber of Commerce, focusing on business, community development and education; the Acres Home Community Development Corp, focusing on housing; the Acres Home Coalition for School Improvement, the first charter school in Texas and the Acres Home Center for Business & Economic Development.

The Malonson’s became the driving force behind Aldine ISD Montessori/Magnet Programs, Lone Star Community College System Victory Center and closed the deal on the Acres Home Multi-Service Center, Acres Home Repair Program and the Acres Home Police Station.

Through their encouragement, the Acreage Homes community was able to get neighborhood-based policing. The Malonson’s have also helped preserve the legacy of the National Black United Front.

They were also instrumental and helped found the Vietnamese Community Center.

Mr. Joseph Do, Director of the Vietnamese Community Center shared the influence Malonson has had on

him in their efforts.

He stated, “He is my mentor, he teach me everything, you know, good, bad, and ugly things.”

Additionally, the Malonson’s helped found the Acres Home War on Drugs, the first community War on Drugs in the nation. This initiative garnered the attention of then-President George H.W. Bush, who patterned the nation’s War on Drugs effort after the one started in Acreage Homes.

Former President Bush also quoted Roy Douglas’ stating, “We have to have personal accountability.”

Considering the above, it is no secret why over 400 people rallied together to help celebrate this Dynamic Duo on February 22. The Acres Home Chamber for Business & Economic Development, chaired by Mr. Warren Fitzgerald Muhammad, held its 30th Annual Awards Banquet, honoring the Malonson’s for dedicating over 35-years of impeccable service to the Acreage Homes community and onward.

State Rep. Eric Johnson tackles school-to-prison pipeline.

AUSTIN- Recently, State Rep. Eric Johnson (D-Dallas) presented legislation that would require school districts to report demographic data about out-ofschool suspensions to the state.

Just last week, Rep. Johnson laid out House Bill 65 before the House Committee on Public Education. The bill would require school districts to report the race, sex and dates of birth of suspended students, as well as information on why the students were suspended and the length of the suspensions. The bill would also require districts to report the number of suspensions that were inconsistent with student code of conduct guidelines in the Education Code.

Districts would add the information to a report they already submit to the Texas Education Agency regarding expulsions and alternative school. The legislation is an effort to give researchers and the public greater information about the frequency and underlying causes of school suspensions.

“My bill would require the same information already reported on expulsions and alternative school placements to be reported on out-of-school suspensions,” Rep. Johnson said. “This data will allow us to craft better policies related to school discipline, and that’s going to help us address the underlying causes of suspensions.”

House Bill 65 is part of Rep. Johnson’s ongoing efforts to shut down the school-

to-prison pipeline. In 2017, Rep. Johnson authored and successfully passed House Bill 674, which prohibits the suspension of students in pre-K through second grade except in the most serious cases.

Continuing that effort, House Bill 65 “is the data and transparency piece,” Rep. Johnson said.

“We want to make sure that kids are being put on a path to graduation and not to prison,” Rep. Johnson said. “People want to study this topic, but they can’t really study it without good data.”

Representatives of Texans Care for Children, Easterseals, Texas Appleseed and Pastors for Texas Children testified in support of House Bill 65 at Tuesday’s hearing. “We think a closer look at suspension policies can lead to an expansion of strategies that actually improve behavior and learning,” said David Feigen of Texans Care for Children, an organization that has highlighted research showing students who are male, African-American and in foster care or special education are disproportionately affected by suspensions.

Jolene Sanders of Easterseals told the committee that, in Houston ISD, African-American students make up 24.4 percent of the population but account for 51 percent of out-of-school suspensions.

“In order to really make meaningful progress in this area, we do need this data,” Sanders said.

The Lord has found favor in Pastor Paul, and through Divine Providence has allowed him to return to the Historic New Light Church Family as Senior Pastor. It is with much humility that he mounts the sacred desk where many great Carriers for the Precious Cargo of Calvary have stood and proclaimed the Kingship, and Lordship of Jesus the Christ.

Pastor Paul and Lady Angelia are the proud parents of Paul G. Wilkinson, Jr., Kerri P. Lang, and Robert E. Lang (sonn-law); and four grandchildren, Brooklyn Wilkinson, Paul Wilkinson III, Kendahl Lang and Regan Lang.

In the past, Pastor Paul has been engaged in many different capacities with the Eastern District Association, American Baptist Convention of Texas, and Young Men for Christ of the National Baptist Convention of America. Currently, Pastor Paul serves as Moderator to The American Baptist Southwest District Association, Second Vice President to The American Baptist Southwest District Congress of Christian Workers, and Secretary/Treasurer of the Benevolent Board to the American Baptist Convention of Texas.

The Lord has allowed Pastor Paul to serve as Pastor of the New Bethel/New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and Coliseum Park Missionary Baptist Church of San Antonio, Texas, and founding pastor of The Rock of Faith Missionary Baptist Church of Converse, Texas.

Pastor Paul has a passion for the Person of God, for the People of God, and for the Place of God, as he proclaims the WORD of God from the “Church on the Hill, with the Gospel for the Whole World”.
