Students from varying schools throughout the community submitted essays on their respective influential leaders from Acres Homes.

In the early 1960’s, many African-Americans settled into this profound and prolific area of Houston and there stood minds, leaders never knowing the impact they would someday bring to the Acres Homes Community.

By mid-1960’s, land that had once declined with dilapidated buildings, and “shotgun” homes within 964 acres were formed, and by the end of the mid 1970’s flourished and 2000 total acres were purchased. In the confines of a nine-mile radius, stretched from Alabonson Road, West Gulf Bank, Pinemont Drive and North Shepherd resided the most prominent figures and influential laborers of the Acres Homes community.

Treading the path of a Southern largest unincorporated, undeveloped area. The late Sammie Mae Ford described it, “like the country where people helped each other.” A place where leaders put their feet in the sand, grinded and allowed the acreage to flourish. Nicknamed after a rap song depicted as the “#44”-Metro bus line, without curbs, sidewalks or drainage systems with horses, is the place where the

work began. Past and present community legends were born and made all the difference in the Acres Homes Community.

Ruby Moseley, also known as the “Mother of Acres Homes” is a community activist for the Acres Homes community as well as the City of Houston. She advocated and played a huge role in creating the Acres Homes Multi-Service Center which stands bright and tall. She was one that played a role in wanting young people to reside in their own community and pursue an education within.

She refused to take no for an answer and advocated for city services. Also known as the Grande Dame of the community because she wanted to improve the community for senior citizens and children.

She continued to use her matriarchal skills and was recognized by Mayor Anise Parker for her accomplishments.

As a member and secretary of the Acres Homes Citizens Council, Ms. Mosely strived to make renovations to areas such as Lincoln City Park. She voted many times against allowing the Acres Homes community to be a crime-infested area and lobbied against hourly rated “no-tell” motels

which she suggested attracted drugs and prostitution in the Acres Homes community.

The mother continues to labor in the field continuing to be an activist and legend of Acres Homes.

While it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a community to allow things happen. her a beacon and a library was built in her honor.

Mayor Sylvester Turner is truly a living legend in the Acres Homes community.

Growing up in the Acres Homes area, he attended Klein schools and that is where his youthful life flourished. The well put together politician, educator and humanitarian wear so many different hats for the City of Houston and Houston.

He is a present legend with a future that is just beginning. He has a heart for the youth and has ensured that the youth in the Acres Homes community and Houston have the same or similar opportunities as he had to be successful.

Mayor Turner although holding one of the most powerful positions in the state and community, he has a forgiving heart and a perseverance intelligence.

I was introduced to the idea of writing this essay from my grandmother, Mary Fisher, for the “Shepard-Acres Home Legends” to not only honor but remember the African-American Legends of Acres Homes. Though I know nothing about the community of Acres Home, outside of what my family and church members discuss, because the community now is not as it was, but the foundation that was built from these community leaders is still present.

I am, however, familiar with leaders, role models and community legends. The ones who taught me not only how great a place ‘Acres Homes’ is, but also how great being an African-American woman can be.

Born on August 21, 2003, I did not meet my great grandparents, but I learned that they bore great community leaders and wonderful children. My grandfather and grandmother are both community leaders who left their imprint on many lives in ‘Acres Homes’.

They would recount the softball teams they once coached and the different leagues around the community the various churches

joined together to play the magnificent game of softball.

These little softball games would bring most of the community out that started a tradition of softball and baseball coming out of Acres Homes. They narrated how the parks would be full of neighbors having fun and living life in a safe environment.

We see the results of these small games in the Sylvester Turner Park which has many baseball and softball fields. Another community leader I admire is my Aunt Ada Jones.

She is continuously meeting with multiple community partners to discuss ideas and concerns for the safety and cleanup needed for what she calls “the best community every”, ‘Acres Homes’.

Aunt Ada will talk to anyone and everyone in the neighborhood because of her belief of this being “the best community ever” which helps continue the traditions she started a long time ago.

Starlight Missionary Baptist Church is where I attend church.

The Reverend Jason Meachum is my pastor.

During my time there, several role models have come by to share a word.

BEULAH SHEPARD

Beulah Ann Shepard Mayor, Acres Home

Beulah Ann Shepard was a political icon, a community activist, and also the fourth of seven children.

Beulah was born on June 14, 1921, to her parents, Emmitt and Queen Raleigh in Plain Dealing, Louisiana. Beulah only received a formal education and was also largely self-taught. In 1948, Beulah decided to leave Louisiana to help care for a sister with a new baby who lived in the African-American Acres Home community of Houston, TX. That year she succeeded in paying $1.50 for her first poll tax just so Beulah could vote. She decided to live in Acres Homes permanently and she first gained an employment as a store clerk.

Soon after, in 1954, Beulah happily mar-

ried Lee Shepard and even raised ten CHILDREN!!!!!!!!

Beulah was first exposed to politics when she became a volunteer for Lyndon B. Johnson’s U.S. senate campaign in 1948. Volunteering in the campaign taught Beulah to attend rallies while studying candidates and their platforms as well. Beulah also realized the effect of the ballot on her life. From that point on, she decided to work with many Democratic cities as well as countries, states and also some national campaigns for over 50 years and never missed the opportunity to vote in ANY election.

Between rallies, Beulah normally worked as a cook, a waitress, a maid and even a furniture salesperson. Beulah’s everlasting persistence for political and even civic equality for Blacks earned the respect and admiration of local and national politicians who sought her advocacy and gave her 24-hour access to them.

Beulah even received invitations from the White House and also met presidents: John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Jimmy Car-

ter and Bill Clinton.

Beulah Shepard was often the unofficial “Mayor of Acres Homes”.

She was also a charter member of Acres Homes Chamber of Commerce and helped organize the Acres Homes Health Council. In 1991, after many years of dedicated service to her community, Beulah retired. In honor of her success, the Acres Home Chamber for Business and Economic Development was named after Beulah in 2004.

Unfortunately, after long years of hard work, services and a great help with our community, Beulah Ann Shepard died on September 11, 2010, after suffering a stroke in 2007. Beulah left a prominent legacy behind.

In her honor, the city of Houston officially named the Beulah Shepard-Acres Homes Neighborhood Library after her. Hopefully we can encourage young readers and children like me to think about going to the Beulah Shepard library and maybe check out a book or two. It will help our literacy and help us remember her legacy.

ROY D. MALONSON

Mr. Roy Douglas Malonson is a vivid advocate for the Acres Homes community. Mr. Malonson was born into a family of 11 people.

As a child he was diagnosed with polio.

However, he did not allow illness to stop him from hard work and determination. So many times, he faced bullying from kids which were cruel by calling him names because of having to wear a brace.

Some of the same kids worked for his company and became his employees.

This encourages me to not allow circumstances and obstacles to stop me from pressing forward. Unfortunately, Mr. Malonson’s mother left the family at the age of 5 for unknown reasons. However, His father John Curley Malonson Sr.

challenged him by saying, “Something is wrong with your leg, but there is nothing wrong with your mind. Richness is defined by the mindset in which you adhere to.

Though in life we may have differences we can make an impact to do great things.”

Despite many of life’s challenges Mr. Malonson managed to stay in school and graduate from George Washington Carver High School in 1968.

He was an apprentice of woodwork and started Roy’s Woodworking Company, the forerunner of Malonson Construction Company.

In 1974, Mr. Malonson lost both his father and a brother to suicide. This is a pain in life that no one should have to endure.

Mr. Malonson took his earnings from woodworking and invested in land in the Acres Homes area where he made negotiations with Shirley Ann, a Booker T Washington graduate and eventually she became his wife. In the 1980’s Mr. Malonson got involved in the Acres Homes community founding the local chamber.

He has worked with HISD, Mr. Thaddeus

Lott to establish Acres Homes Coalition of Charter Schools. He has also established a newspaper by the name of African-American News and Issues which displays the news from an African-American perspective.

Some articles like “Embracing Fatherhood Ain’t Nothing new For the Black Man, Who Do We Go To and Time for Mothers to Mothers” brings day to day issues to forefront. Mr. Malonson and his wife Shirley, opened Shirley Ann’s Black Arts and Kollectibles Inc., which sales sculptures, ceramics, dolls and African masks.

Mr. Malonson has donated both time and financial support to many educational and community organizations. He also headed the Acres Homes War on Drugs, the first community War on Drugs in the nation. He founded the Acres Home Coalition Administrative School and also closed the deal for the Acres Homes Multi-Service Center and the Acres Homes Police Station.

It is possible to have respect even if there are differences.

FLOYD H. FLAKE

I would like to share my thoughts and details regarding the life of Pastor Floyd Flakes.

After further research, Pastor Floyd has had many accomplishments and has become a very important person in history. It is my hope that after reading this information, you will learn more about him as well.

Pastor Floyd Harold Flake was born January 30, 1945, in Los Angeles, California; however, he grew up in Houston. He has 14 siblings.

His parents were strong Christians which influenced his way of thinking. His dad, Robert Flake, Sr. and mother, Rosie Lee Johnson were proud that he was the first member of his family to graduate from college. He married Margaret McCollins and together they have four children.

Floyd received his BA degree from Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio. He

also attended United Theological Seminary. He has worked as a social worker and a marketing analyst at Xerox. He also worked as a Director at Lincoln University.

Another great job he had was, Director of the Martin Luther King, Jr Afro-American Center at Boston University. It is interesting to know that he was the President of the college he once attended from 2002-2008.

Pastor Floyd Flake was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from New York 6th district. He has been in office for 11 years. He is a member of the Democratic party. He is currently the senior Pastor of the Greater Allen A.M.E Cathedral of New York Church. The church has over 23, 000 members and known to be one of the top twenty churches in America.

He and his church have been on TV and many magazines such as BET, CNN, CBS, The New York Times and Ebony just to name a few.

In 1990, Pastor Flake and his wife were indicted for fraud and stealing church funds.

After further investigation, all charges were dropped.

He currently has ownership in Aqueduct Race Track Entertainment.

Flake is a member of several boards such as the Fannie Mae Foundation and the Princeton Review. I was excited to learn that he is also a successful public speaker and writer.

His best- selling book is called “The Way of the Bootstrapper”, Nine Steps to Achieving Your Dreams. He and his wife wrote the book together. The book talks about not needing much to succeed. If you have the mindset and a value system, you can be successful. In this book, Pastor Flake, has the enthusiasm to motivate people and teach them to become doers and not just sit down doing nothing.

He also wrote books called Practical Virtues and African-American Church Management.

These books can still be purchased today. He has many sermons that can be viewed on You Tube.

Some of them Sermons are titled, A More Intimate relationship with God, God’s Plan For Your Life and my mom’s personal favorite sermon is, Don’t Lose What You’ve Worked For. In conclusion, Pastor Floyd Flake is a man with great wisdom and knowledge. He is now 74-years-old and is still a great Methodist preacher.

LORETTA DEVINE

There have been many African-American performers throughout the years; some more notable than others, but still great, nonetheless. These female performers deserve more recognition than they are given for their outstanding work on the

many daunting roles they have to play.

From touchy historical roles to sassy old ladies to tiring Broadway performances, Black women have to play a lot of slightly to completely insulting roles.

Even though many of them have received said recognition, there are also many others that need to be noticed for the complete raw talent.

One notable actress who deserves to be more acknowledged is the charismatically, bewitching Loretta Devine.

Loretta was born on August 21, 1949, in

Houston. Her mother, Eunice O’ Neal was a beautician while her father, James Devine worked as a laborer. She grew up in the Acres Homes area of Houston, where her mother was a single mother to six children. There was no further recorded information about her siblings.

Her and her spouse, Glen Marshall, also had one child together, James Lawrence Tyler.

Loretta, now 69-yearsold, has a net worth amount over $8 million with her thirty years of performances on stage.
