Legend defined is, “An extremely famous or notorious person, especially in a particular field.” So, in admiration I call to the front, Ms. Beverly Allen Robinson, a legend in the ministry of the Dance.

Ms. Beverly has been a pillar in the Acres Homes community and a graduate of M.C. Williams High School, and she has studied under the tutelage of Professor C. Lee Turner and Dr. Joeann Valley Rush. The love and admiration for dance was ignited in the heart of Acres Homes M.C. Williams High School, which currently a middle school. I can say that you should never forget where you have come from because it may be the evidence that enriches the journey ahead.

It is not often that you find genuine people that have a heart for the things of God. However, so many ministries have been blessed to be uplifted through the gift of dance, song and the arts. Therefore, following graduation Beverly began to teach praise dance at Progressive Missionary Baptist Church and Galilee Baptist Church where another legend also presides by the name of Pastor Edwin Davis.

We MUST Understand

Not Another 400 Years “Unchain the African-American Mind” Dear Mr. Malonson: I read some of your article in reference to Trump Making America Great Again. I know that 100% of African-American community newspapers support the Democratic Party. But there are new brave leaders who admonish Black people to leave the Democratic Party, because it has Destroyed the Black Community!

Namely: Rev. Jesse Lee Peterson; many florists, bakers, photographers-businesses closed because they would not do a Gay Wedding; Elbert Guillory (State Senator from Louisiana); Former Civil Rights Leader, Clarence Henderson; AME Grandmother voted for Donald Trump and recently, a Black Man was the “ONLY” black face in the London Protests for TRUMP!!

Mr. Malonson, I think it’s time to present the real facts. The President has a right to protect our borders, we cannot allow any and everyone to come to this country, we have to check their backgrounds. Why is that so hard for you to accept that this is in the best interest of our nation and our community!!!

Most importantly, Democrats do not protect the sanity of life, they want to take away our rights to bear arms, they want to force the churches to perform gay marriage, and these issues are not in the best interest of African Americans. Why won’t you allow the African American people to see the reality about the destruction that the Democratic Party has done to our community! Present the facts, and let the people choose, Free the African-American Mind.

Dear Editor, This letter is to draw awareness to our education system as the current system is focusing too much on statewide assessments and quick to label our children as a behavioral problem, saying they don’t care, or these students are incorrigible. Our community needs focus on social emotional learning with a holistic teaching approach that supports the whole child.

Our children in our community have to learn and understand what is means to be social and emotional before academic learning can be assessed. Recognizing their emotions, learning their strengths, building confidence, expressing empathy, and managing their stress of everyday life has to be addressed early throughout elementary.

Majority of our children come from low-income communities and broken families with one or both parents having been incarcerated. These children have a huge disadvantage with increased risk factor and making it to school daily should be noted as a positive. Bringing social emotional learning to every classroom these children will learn the tools and skills that will prepare them to deal with the stress of their daily life, they will improve academically, they will improve behaviorally, they will learn how to management their attitudes and learn everlasting life skills.

Now, we can teach our children how to set basic realistic short term goals - then long term goals and model responsibility. We don’t want to eliminate all assessments, we intentionally what to bring a focus to social emotional learning. It’s time to reform the current educational system. It’s time for new energy in Texas politics. My name is Carey Lashley and I want to energize and empower my community and support change.

Accountability Part II.

I

concur with the words of the former president, as I have often stated, “We have two of the most powerful tools a person can have, ‘our money’ and ‘our vote’ – and we should be careful who we give them to.”

There was a reason why our ancestors vicariously fought for our right to vote.

Although back then, they were not allowed to have a voice in deciding who should represent them; it never stopped them from fighting for the right to vote for the generations that were to come.

As I stated on last week, I am continuing on in an “Accountability” series, as it relates to the African-American community. Because I am tired of the “pass the buck” mentality; we have allowed candidates for public office to come into our communities and solicit our support to get them elected.

Yet, once they are elected, they totally forget about the

promises they made to our communities. So, We MUST Understand it is time to hold those we elect accountable of the tasks they were elected to do.

Sad to say, a great many of our elected officials only have one major concern, votes. However, this benefits you as an individual because, the key to securing votes is people and money.

Therefore, members of the community should, analyze elected officials. Analyzing elected officials means to, learn as much as possible about your elected official’s agenda. After all YOU elect them to represent YOU, so you have the right to hold them accountable.

Furthermore, once we encounter an elected official who refuses to do their job, we have a duty to get rid of them. They must start to understand putting the country and the people first should be their priority. If your congressperson votes against things that are important to you and your area, you’ve got to vote against them. This is one of the best ways to get their attention. You have got to let them know that their career is not YOUR priority - YOUR JOB, YOUR FAMILY, YOUR COMMUNITY and YOUR FUTURE ARE! Finally, I urge elected officials to hold yourselves accountable. If each elected official would start holding his or herself accountable, it would take away the stress of us having to do your own damn job.

Property Tax Relief or Deceit?

L

ast week, the Texas Senate passed the controversial property tax reform bill, Senate Bill 2. This bill is just an attack on local governments and their ability to provide basic services to their communities, without providing any meaningful tax relief.

We have watched our City of Houston leaders grapple with balancing a budget with the hindrance of the local revenue cap for years. This cap makes it a challenge to provide essential city services like picking up trash and filling potholes. SB 2 will add another restriction and will only further exacerbate Houston’s current situation.

Texas is a two-tax state that primarily uses property taxes and sales taxes to fund government services. Since the start of the session, the governor, lieutenant governor and speaker of the Texas House have all advocated in support of property tax relief.

SB 2 would lower the rollback rate from 8 percent to 2.5 percent for schools and 3.5 percent for other local governments.

But, Republican leaders want to fund the property tax cut by increasing

the state’s sales tax from 6.25 percent to 7.25 percent, which would be the highest in the country. I strongly oppose raising the sales tax because it is a direct attack on our communities. Low income and minority communities, especially those that live paycheck to paycheck, will be hit the hardest by this tax increase. That is unacceptable!

Further, property taxes are tied directly to public school finances. You cannot start talking about property tax reform until you fully fund public education. In 2011, Texas Republican leaders cut public education to the tune of $5 billion. That massive budget cut reverberated in schools in the Black community and was felt at neighborhoods surrounding Yates, Worthing, Kashmere and Wheatley High Schools. Restoring the 2011 budget cuts come first before we even begin discussing property tax reform. Local government services are the backbone of a community. They pave the streets, keep the traffic lights on, toilets flushing, protect our homes and so much more. Republicans need to let local jurisdictions decide what is best for their community.

If the community has a problem with their local leaders, they can voice their pleasure or displeasure at the ballot box.

State leaders need to heed that lesson, as many found out in the November 2018 Election. Keep local governments local and stop this attack on our community.

Confederate Heroes???

M

uch of the discussion surrounding Confederate Heroes and monuments are centered around preserving heritage. But, whose heritage is worth preserving?

For some of us, it is not possible to separate the brutality of slavery from the actions of confederate soldiers. This conflict is deeply personal to me, my family line can be drawn back to a slave being raped by her White slave owner.

Not everyone has stories from their ancestors they can be proud of. My great-great grandmother Janie’s life was full of violence and suffering. She was born into slavery, separated from her mother at five, raped remorselessly, bore children from those rapes, and lived separately from her fair-skinned children who lived with their White father.

To many, the Civil War was so long ago, the war and the consequences of it are taught in History class, but for me, it was shared through my Mother and Grandfather’s words.

Confederate monuments and holiday’s honoring “heroes” is a visualization of how this part of US History has been sanitized and “white washed”.

When I look at monuments honoring the Con-

federacy, I see a painful depiction of the brutality that created my family line.

The definition of hero is “a person admired for achievements and noble qualities” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Are the actions of Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee heroic by this definition so that they warrant an official state holiday to remembering them? While leaders such as Robert E. Lee may have fought nobly in a brutal war, it is impossible to separate that he not only was fighting on the side that defended the act of slavery, but he himself was a slave owner.

humane, and a shameful part of America’s past, not a noble quality. If Texans want to remember their family members who fought and died in fight-

ing for the Confederacy, I encourage them to honor them on their deceased family member’s birthday, anniversary of their death or any other day of importance.

Neither the state nor federal government have holidays to remember veterans of each American war separately, so why do we have a holiday to specifically honor the “Confederate heroes” in Texas?

Holidays like Confederate Heroes Day and the presence of over 170 public spaces with Confederate monuments in Texas offer a sanitized version of history.

HOUSTON- Early on Bruce Austin understood the biblical inference, “To whom much is given, much is required.” He was blessed to be birthed into a family of educators and professionals and was also dealt his own measure of brilliance.

While he has experienced the highs of working in the most prominent positions the nation has to offer; he’s also had his share of battling with life’s most debilitating illnesses. Nevertheless, he main-

After completing his stint in the military, he returned home to Houston and proceeded to attend Texas Southern University. There he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, MPA in Public Administration (specialization in policy analysis and administrative law), and JD – Juris

awarded a Presidential Management Internship.

He served in the United States Department of Justice, Washington, DC, in the Offices Administrative Counsel, Information Technology, Controller, Personnel and in the Office of the Assistant Attorney General for Administration.

While in the Navy, he was privileged to travel around the world visiting the likes of China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Guam, just to list a few. As

Mrs. Gwendolyn Carter receives Community Service award at the TLOD Area I Conference.

PRAIRIE VIEW - Recently, Mrs. Gwendolyn Carter received a very distinguished award for her community service at the Top Ladies of Distinction (TLOD), Incorporated Area I Conference in Houston.

Mrs. Carter is a retired educator and resident of Prairie View for over six decades.

She has volunteered as a meal delivery driver for Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels program, since September, 2008 in Waller County.

To date, she has help deliver over 6,000 meals to residents. Wow, what a committed worker!

Passion defined is, “An intense desire or enthusiasm for something.” The passion for dance led Ms. Beverly to organize praise dance at True Light Baptist Church. My brother Khandon Kinniebrew also known as “King Camo”, was given the opportunity to dance at an event headed by Ms. Beverly, who works with my mother LaShawn Kinniebrew at the Harris County Appraisal District and has brought praise dance to their Annual Christmas Corale. There are no limits as you can see. When the call of God is on your life, limits are lifted, barriers are broken, hearts are mended and your gifts opens doors for you.

Ms. Beverly currently serves as a Praise Dance Director at the Church of New Beginnings where she leads The Angelic Faith Dancers (kids), Movement Mimes of Faith, Truth Steppers, WINGS (Women in God’s Service) and Symbols

of Faith under the leadership of Pastor/Founder Michael Lee Jones.

What I have learned is that you must be diligent with whatever your passion may be, and doors will open because of the leg-
