On March 23, 1957, Ella Louise Edwards Dorsey was blessed with her first born of six children, a handsome baby boy whom she named Russell Tyrone. Robert and Alma Mills were excited to welcome Russell and were proud to become parents.

As a village, together they each played a major role in molding Russell to become an intelligent and hardworking young man.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s is a progressive and fatal disease that is devastating to not just the individual living with the disease but their caregivers as well. Today, there are 390,000 Texans living with Alzheimer’s-and every 65 seconds a new person develops the disease in America. I have been touched by Alzheimer’s with the passing of my Grandma who died of Alzheimer’s in 2016. Many people don’t know that Alzheimer’s disease doesn’t just affect people over 60 and that there are 200,000 Americans under the age of 60 living with Alzheimer’s.

Under the Younger-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease Act of 2019 (H.T. 1903/S.901), these individuals under the age of 60 would have access to nutritional programs, respire programs for caregivers, and other services to enhance the quality of life. I am happy to announce that Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has recently signed on as cosponsor for this bill.

I want to extend my sincere thanks to Congresswoman Jackson-Lee for her support of these efforts. Her support is important in moving this important bill forward and helps protect younger adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.

I disagree with you about the Christian viewpoint article. When will African-American Newspapers and writers realize that African-Americans have a right to vote for who they choose and not who you think we should? Most African-American Newspapers are totally Democratic, because that is their mindset of several years of indoctrination. Many African-Americans have left the Democratic Party.

Have you heard about the African-American Senator who was Democratic and turned Republican Elbert Guillory out of Louisiana? Of course not, if you only listen and read mainstream media.

Did you see the editorial on FOX news: the reporter Kimberly Klacik from Baltimore said that it’s not racist to want to have lower taxes, to enforce immigration laws & to want men to use the men’s restroom?

When will the Black media & newspapers wake up and realize that all AfricanAmericans DO NOT go to HBCU’s just because they Black…And we DO NOT all vote Democratic just because we Black…We want what is best for our country and our taxes and our community, and right now millions of African-Americans see TRUMP as the best candidate for President.

When will Black newspapers talk about the lack of fathers in African-American homes? These boys need dads, mothers cannot raise this generation of boys alone…When will the Black press talk about abortion in the A/A community?

These are serious and legitimate problems that you NEVER discuss!! Not all Blacks are Democratic and think the Democratic Party is for them, like the BET Founder, Robert Johnson. He recently said that the DP is moving too far to the left.!!!

ACCOUNTABILITY A majority of the inheritances of African-Americans intended for descendants, friends and loved ones have gone “unclaimed by the Millions”. MDL 1206 “unclaimed Check payments are currently still waiting to be claimed by us”.

What: MDL 1206 is the Federal Court case where the battle has already been won in your favor. This is the most important history making Federal Court case related to unclaimed money, land, mineral rights, wells and African-American Royalty Interest Owners. Each check identifies: land, mineral rights and money supported by signed lease agreements, trust accounts, safe deposit boxes and other assets and interests that had or has oil and gas wells producing on it.

Who: The Oil & Gas Companies already done the research and title examination. Oil companies submit MDL 1206 names to the court and check the list of Absent Royalty Interest Owners. The checks’ names are related to freed slaves - our Ancestors’ 2nd, 3nd and 4th generations, descendants, beneficiaries, heirs, (Grandparents, Great Grandparents, Great - Great Grandparents). WHY? “Checks are unclaimed”? Because the Owners could not be found by the last known address, moved or died, so heirs just do not know.

How: Simple! Create your own list of (over 30 or more) family members names/addresses and match them against the MDL 1206 list. If you find or connect any name(s). GO - FILE - A - CLAIM. Conclusion: MDL 1206 would benefit the well-being and welfare growth of the African-American community, the fundamental inherent dignity human rights to own and not be arbitrarily deprived of property and protect the family interests for their posterity legacies.

Heirs you have a duty to reclaim what the Ancestors would have claimed for themselves.

Knowledge is your right, control is a right and power; pass the message on, Pay It Forward. Freed slaves went through much worse and still took risk. Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, now us. So, please be PATIENT and STAND! Deborah Wilkerson Houston

We MUST Understand

I

t has been said, “You are your worst enemy.”

And honestly, I believe this thought has much truth to it. We MUST Understand each of US has the power to will ourselves to greatness or disable all of our potential on wasted causes. Because, we are as big as we think we are or as small as we think we are. To that regard, I believe there is also another enemy that is often overlooked and seldom talked about. Just like we can be our own worst enemy.

Sometimes, our very own people can be our worst enemy.

Oftentimes, we have a tendency to blame everybody and every other culture for the things that have gone wrong in our communities. But there comes a time when we must accept that we have also played our own part in self-annihilation.

Because African-American News & Issues is a publication that thrives off of highlighting current and historical realities affecting our communities that I feel it is necessary to address this topic. Many people are unaware that the first slave owner was a Black man according to colonial records. Here is a little history Wikipedia documents on the matter.

“Prior to 1655 there

were no legal slaves in the colonies, only indentured servants. All masters were required to free their servants after their time was up. Seven years was the limit that an indentured servant could be held.

Upon their release they were granted 50 acres of land. Anthony Johnson was a Negro from modern-day Angola. He was brought to the US to work on a tobacco farm in 1619.

In 1622 he was almost killed when Powhatan Indians attacked the farm.

52 out of 57 people on the farm perished in the attack. He married a female black servant while working on the farm.

When Anthony was released he was legally recognized as a “free Negro” and ran a successful farm.

In 1651 he held 250 acres and five black indentured servants. In 1654, it was time for Anthony to release John Casor, a black inden-tured servant. Instead Anthony told Casor he was extending his time.

Casor left and became employed by the free white man Robert Parker.

Anthony Johnson sued Robert Parker in the Northampton Court in 1654. In 1655, the court ruled that Anthony Johnson could hold John Casor indefinitely. The court gave judicial sanction for blacks to own slave of their own race. Thus Casor became the first permanent slave and Johnson the first slave owner.

Whites still could not legally hold a black servant as an indefinite slave until 1670.

Getting Rid of Trump Means Little With the Other “President” McConnell Still There

A

beaming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell drew raucous cheers from the throng at the 2016 Republican convention when he bragged that he torpedoed then President Obama’s Supreme Court pick Merrick Garland.

McConnell wasn’t finished he ticked off a few other pieces of legislation that Obama proposed that he did not like and did everything he could to scrap.

McConnell still wasn’t finished. Later he circled back on his Supreme Court obstruction touting it as one of his proud moments.

His boast told much about how one Senator could stymie a President, make or break legislation and appointments, and totally dominate government. It was enough to make one ask just who is the real President; Trump or McConnell?

McConnell has answered that question time and again when he says what business the Senate will consider or ignore.

It makes no difference how loud or long the public clamors for action on legislation. If McConnell

says no, that’s it. His imperial power was on full display in the wake of the mass slayings in El Paso and Dayton. The roar was deafening, and that even included a weak but momentary nod from Trump, for the Senate to so something on gun control legislation even if it meant calling the Senate back from summer break. That was up to McConnell. He said no and that was that.

For much of the nation’s legislative history, there was no such thing as a Senate Majority Leader. A House Speaker yes, this congressional position is clearly spelled out in the Constitution, but a Senate Majority Leader, no. The position evolved over the last few decades.

It began to take on the real trappings of power and prestige when Lyndon Johnson took the rein as majority leader in the 1950s. He sweet talked, massaged, compromised, and at times used the bully whip, to goad senators in line to pass key and controversial pieces of legislation, especially civil rights. In the decades after, Senate Majority Leaders mostly worked hard to attain bi-partisanship consensus on passing legislation and approving administration and judicial appointments.

That changed with McConnell and the election of Obama. McConnell repeatedly boasted that he would do everything in his power to make Obama’s presidency a failed presidency. He didn’t quite do that. However, once he grabbed the majority

leader post in 2012, as he bragged to the GOP convention in 2016, he dickered, delayed, dodged, and torpedoed any Obama legislative initiative or judicial appointment that he deemed unacceptable.

He was able to do that because he is a shrewd, calculating and crafty politician who knows every parliamentary trick in the book. He flies mostly under the radar scope of the mass media and public.

Obama and now Trump get the headlines, but he quietly does the real damage away from the public glare. In the decades of his tenure in the Senate he has learned the rules, procedures, and regulations that govern the Senate backwards and forward. He sets the calendar of what, when or if legislation will go to Senate Committees and the floor. He has the full and united backing of the GOP Majority Senators. He has the power to appoint or remove committee chairs. He has a President who despite his occasional grumble, and bluster about McConnell, knows that he is as dependent on him to get anything done in the Senate as anyone else.

So, if there is a President Biden, Warren, Sanders or Harris, with McConnell still holding the power lever in a GOP controlled Senate, he almost certainly will again convene private meetings with GOP party leaders as he did after Obama was reelected. He bluntly told the Senators then that the GOP must do any and everything to insure a con-

gressional firewall against a Democratic President.

That means again delay, dither, obstruct, gut, and torpedo initiatives and legislation of a Democratic President from the budget to all level of their appointments.

McConnell will do exactly what he did during nearly minute of Obama’s second term. He will orchestrate and maneuver in the Senate to determine who sits on the high court, the lower court benches, and bags key spots in federal agencies. These are all top-grade posts that initiate, make, and implement crucial policy decisions after many Congresspersons are long gone. McConnell will have virtual dictatorial control over which of the President’s nominees are put to a confirmation vote.

Getting rid of Trump while McConnell sits in the Senate driver seat will mean little. A big part of the Democrat’s 2020 Presidential election end game must be to oust McConnell. He’s got a viable Kentucky election challenger in Amy McGrath.

The DNC, Democratic Congressional Election Committees, State Committees, and Democratic Grassroots Funding Organizations should put armies of campaign workers and volunteers and should empty the funding bank backing her campaign. A victory combined with a Democrat in the Oval Office will end once and for all the tyranny of the one man who in effect is the other “President.”

I have known a lot of districts but they will always be the best students I ever had. They respected me for what I was trying to get for them. They understood I loved them and it was more about them getting what they needed to succeed.” - Dr. Kimberley N. Booker

HOUSTON - From humble beginnings in Northeast Houston, Dr. Kimberley N. Booker has become a true educator and public servant. Driven by purpose and motivated by a passion she developed during her fundamental years of schooling in the North Forest Independent School District; she has dedicated nearly three decades of service to the field of education.

Furthermore, Dr. Booker is an accomplished: Board Trustee, Administrator, Author, Mentor, Chief Executive Officer, Mother, Wife and above all a woman of spiritual conviction with strong Christian values. However, her entitlement in these roles did not come without cost.

Finding Purpose

At the age of ten, Kimberley’s father passed away. Although her mother, the late Odessa Haywood later remarried her mother primarily raised her and her two brothers alone. Odessa was a praying and God-fearing woman, who instilled sound values and morals within her children. Growing up, Kimberley’s mother always told her she could be anything she wanted to be.

While Odessa was a high school graduate and took up some college courses later in life, she always encouraged her daughter to do more and to supersede her accomplishments’.

After graduating from Forest Brook Senior High School, Kimberley matriculated at the University of Houston. Initially, she had a desire to become a physician. However, after enrolling in college it didn’t take her long to realize she didn’t mix well with “Science” and couldn’t stomach the sight of too much “Blood”.

Therefore, she regressed to her initial passion, education. Accordingly, she continued on and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education and a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston.

Upon completing her studies, she began teaching English at Forest Brook Senior High School.

Since that time, she has tirelessly extended over a decade of service to educating students across the Greater Houston and surrounding areas - working in Aldine, Houston and Spring Independent School Districts. Aside from being an instructor, she also worked in administration and served as an Adjunct Professor. Amidst passionately working to educate the “total child”, she returned to school to accomplish a Doctorate degree in Administration and Foundation. During our interview, she shared that it was important for her to attain her Doctorate from Texas Southern University - a local HBCU.

A mission she accomplished in 2010.

Driven by Purpose

In February, 2017, Dr. Booker was elected as a school board member of the Aldine Independent School District. She said, “The reason I became a school board member is because I believe in students, I believe in student success. I

two sons of our own. But my husband looked at me and said if it means that much to you... Go ahead and do it if it makes you happy! And right there, I knew it was God...”

Throughout her journey, Dr. Booker has made various personal sacrifices for the sake of education and declares she doesn’t regret

I gave up an entire salary to volunteer for the school board and when I did this it wasn’t planned. I hadn’t saved any money, I went to my husband who doesn’t play around when it comes to our finances. We have

doing so. Even in the face of having gone through a divorce; losing her home and vehicles; taking pay cuts and demotions in her professional career and experiencing the loss of her mother in 2009, amongst other obstacles; she remained committed to her “Purpose” - Education. So much so, that she established a non-profit

organization while working as an educator at Eisenhower Ninth Grade Campus - Young Ladies of Elegance.

Being the proud mother of two well-balanced sons, Dr. Booker always desired a daughter of her own.

One day while in meditation on the matter, she was spiritually inspired by God to develop an organization where she would not only mother one daughter, but scores of young girls across the city.

Young Ladies of Elegance is a two-fold program intervention and prevention. Participants have the option either be a mentor or receive positive mentorship from the staff of Young Ladies of Elegance.

Dr. Booker expressed, YLOE is, “a mentorship, leadership, positive role model organization which shows young ladies how to be leaders on the campus.” She continued, “If we have good girls, we want them to remain good and help somebody else. For the young ladies who have had challenges, well here we are.

We say we want to help and that’s what we need to do, stop talking about it and be about helping these young people because they need help.”

To affirm her commitment to Young Ladies of Elegance, Dr. Booker authored a book, Momma, I Need Help! She said, “I based it on my organization because, as Black people we don’t always see the importance of our daughters being in a leadership program. A lot of parents want them out there shaking and dancing and half naked. I’m not saying there’s nothing wrong with cheerleading or drill team - but what about their character? What are you teaching them? So, I wrote a book to mothers letting them know - your daughter is crying out for help and you need to see the signs.”

Silver Lining

Despite the many changes Dr. Booker has witnessed and experienced in education, she remains humble and always keeps a positive attitude. She strongly believes, “Education is not a joke and it’s essential for our students.”

Aside for being Driven

by Purpose in regards to education and mentorship, Dr. Booker has been happily married to the love of her life, Elder David Booker for 21 years She is the mother of two outstanding sons, Joseph Williams (28) and Jordan Booker (19), who both volunteer diligently with Young Ladies of Elegance.

A 25-Year Journey to Meet a Man I Already Knew...

By Bro. Kofi Taharka HOUSTON - I woke up at 5:00am on a summer morning July 2019 in Washington, D.C. preparing for a trip which was 25 years in the making.

I stepped outside in the dark to cool and refreshing air, especially compared to the heat and hu-

midity I just left in Texas.

During the 2 hour drive up to the Allegheny Mountains of western Maryland, many thoughts and considerations raced through my mind. My life- long confidant and driver was the perfect person to share this trip with because throughout our lives we have experienced many important milestones together.

About a week earlier I told him, “I need you for some soldier work,” he immediately agreed. Our ride through this beautiful area was filled with discussion, mainly me explaining the importance of the person that I was

going see and the overall context of why it was so meaningful. One road sign read “Be aware of Bear and Deer”.

Coming from a primarily flat part of Texas, the lush green rolling hills and picturesque valleys were inviting, I even joked to my brother to leave me out there so I could take in what nature had to offer. After a brief stop for directions, we went down a winding road, nestled in a small valley with mountains jetting up in the rear we had arrived at our destination. I felt strong, confident and determined.

OBITUARIES Gilbert Johnson, Sr.

Of this union 3 children were born-Corita, Cynthia, and Gilbert Jr. Gilbert settled on the Dairy Farm off of Jack Rabbit Road. Then he settled in Acreage Home and opened his first Texaco Service Station on West Montgomery Road. Lastly, Gilbert settled in the Carverdale community where he became a prominent business owner of Johnson’s Texaco gas station in 1957. He supported local businesses and helped extensively throughout the Carverdale area. He was a pillar in the community known for his hard work ethic giving nature, and willingness to assist those in need.

He accepted Christ at an early age and later in life became a devout member and Deacon at Greater Riverdale Baptist Church where he served for over 60 years until his home going.

Eternal rest and peace for Gilbert occurred on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 at 7:06p.m. at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital in Houston, TX. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, son, Gilbert, Jr., devoted wife, Ezola, daughter, Corita Johnson Wooten and 7 brothers.

He leaves to cherish his memories a loving daughter, Cynthia J. Boxie, 12 grandchildren, Doritha Banks, Merle Banks (Melody), Mark Johnson, Allen Childs (Regina), Troy Childs, Renderick Childs (Sandy), Shaun “Yogi” Childs (Keisha), Shaundra “Nikki” Childs (Gerard), Tonisha LeFlore, Shonte Crossland (Marrio), Star Boxie, Tonya Johnson; 27 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Edward Johnson (Tammy) and Bernard Johnson (Monique) and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and loved ones.

Russell Mills Russell joined church at a young age and was baptized at Star Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

Russell grew up and was educated in the Acres Home Community of Houston, Texas.

He attended Bethune Elementary, Charles Richard Drew Middle School and George Washington Carver High School in Aldine ISD where he developed a true love for agriculture. After high school, Russell worked at Houston Lights & Power (HL&P). Seeking greater independence, Russell took a leap of faith and launched his own business, Mills Construction.

At a very young age Russell loved riding horses. He competed in bareback riding and bull riding and steer dogging events throughout the country and was awarded the opportunity to represent in some of the most prestigious rodeos in the nation. Russell entered his 1st rodeo competition in bull riding at the age of 16 years old. In 1981 he won the Bill Pickett International “All Around Cowboy Award.” In 1984 in Gary, Indiana, he set the record in steer dogging with a time of 2.7 seconds and set the record at the Bill Pickett’s Rodeo. In 1989 he won the bare back riding at the final rodeo hosted

by Gilley’s. Russell was a true Legend in the cowboy arena. He was a cowboy and truly committed to his western roots. He was a member of Acres Home Riding and Roping Club, Prairie View Trail Riders, Southwestern Trail Riders and Butcher Boys Riding Club.

Russell loved hosting parties and dancing to zydeco and country music. As any true cowboy, Russell loved watching westerns, rodeos and horse riding.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ella Louise Edwards Dorsey, Robert and Alma Mills; his brothers Carl Dorsey and Kent Lemons.
