2016 Is Not Good Enough for 2020

It’s déjà vu all over again. he defeat of theDemocratic presidential candidate in 2016 was crushing, and many reasons have been given for why Hillary Clinton’s bid for the White House went down in flames.

Some people blame her failure to visit key states often enough. Others blame a lack of enthusiasm on the part of African-American voters. And then there were the Russians, among many other things.

But four years after their humiliating defeat, many Democrats seem to be leaning towards agreeing that what they did in 2016 is good enough for 2020.

Enter Joe Biden, stage right, with a broad toothy grin and promises of moderation and electability.

The reaction of many African-Americans to Joe Biden’s appearance on the political horizon is a huge yawn of boredom.

What many White politicians and policymakers in the Democratic Party do not realize is that Af-

rican-Americans understand that Donald Trump is not the sole problem we face today.

He is merely the symptom, not the disease. And the disease has festered for centuries, mutating from one epoch to another – through slavery, Reconstruction, the Civil Rights Movement, down to today. It is not enough to just beat Trump.

Conservative and moderate Democrats stuck their heads in the sand after November 2016 and ignored the White supremacy dynamics that were in play during the election. They resolutely proclaimed that Trump rode into office on economic anxieties.

Black folk have much more economic anxiety than Whites but we did not vote for Trump. Trump rode into office on anxieties over the loss of White supremacy.

In 2008, what voters of color saw in Barack Obama was a step towards social justice and racial equality. What they saw in Hillary Clinton in 2016 was a privileged White woman who had once equated youth of Color with animals and called them “superpredators.”

Now Democrats are asking for a “do over” in 2020, serving up a moderate-to-conservative Democrat trailing a foul-smelling political history that we ignore at our own

peril. If we unpack Joe Biden’s political history, we find the following: School Busing – In 1974, as a junior U.S. Senator from Delaware, Joe Biden promised his White constituents that he would oppose desegregating schools by busing students. In the 1970s, it was clear that many school districts were segregated along racial lines because housing patterns were likewise segregated, and busing students was the most logical solution to achieve school integration.

Biden did not care about the social injustice of segregated schools. He only wanted to satisfy his racially bigoted White constituents. Because of politicians like Joe Biden, school districts today are more segregated than they were in the 1970s. This is an argument backed by data.

The National Center for Education Statistics’ data show that the percentage of African-American students attending majority White schools is down to 23 percent from a high of 44 percent in the 1980s. The current situation is equivalent to the integration level in 1969.

The Hyde Amendment – The original Hyde Amendment, passed in 1976, barred the use of federal funds to pay for an abortion except to save the life of the woman or if the pregnancy arose from

incest or rape. Joe Biden voted for its adoption and has staunchly supported that law until recently, when he began his current presidential campaign. He insists that his decision to flip on this issue was not due to politics, but he has expressed no other reason that makes sense.

Anita Hill – When Clarence Thomas was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1991, Joe Biden was the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Biden’s aggressive questioning of Anita Hill, an African-American law professor who accused Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment, appeared to many Americans to be inappropriate and hostile.

Anita Hill told the Huffington Post Live that Joe Biden did a disservice to the American public when he refused to call other witnesses who could have corroborated Hill’s characterization of Thomas’ behavior as sexually inappropriate. And she asserted that this failure got in the way of bringing to the public a better understanding of sexual harassment.

It took Joe Biden almost 18 years to offer an apology to Anita Hill after acknowledging that his actions during the Thomas hearings were “wrong.”

But, this 2019 apology was so weak and disingenuous, Anita Hill refused to accept it.

The 1994 Crime Bill – Biden does not deny that

he was the architect of the 1994 Crime Bill. But what he does deny, in the face of facts to the contrary, is that it led to mass incarceration in America. And the weight of that outcome was borne mostly by People of Color.

Attempting to execute a complicated two-step shuffle, Biden denies that the bill led to mass incarceration while at the same time trying to distance himself from responsibility for the impact of the bill.

But his maneuvers have been met by sharp criticism from several other Democratic presidential candidates who believe he should accept responsibility for fostering such bad policy.

The road to Donald Trump was paved with politicians like Joe Biden, their big grins and folksy sayings masking an indifference to the suffering of People of Color. You can find them at every level of government, professing not to be racist, but tolerating racism in local, state and federal policies.

Politicians like these ask us to forget and forgive while they provide us with nothing but empty promises and disappointment. But, there must be some accountability for politicians like Joe Biden because, while he is not the first of his kind, unless People of Conscious act, he will not be the last.

We MUST Understand

We are the change that we seek.”

was reminded of the words of our former President after watching the most recent Democratic Presidential debate held at Texas Southern University. With all that the nation has witnessed in the last few years, it is very clear America needs CHANGE we can all believe in. Donald Trump’s administration should have shown the American people several things.

Most importantly of them all, African-Americans should be paying close attention to the candidates who are seeking office. Because if we are not careful, we are going to land ourselves in another four years of confusion We MUST Understand, enough is enough!

It is time for US to wake up and start being concerned about the things that affect US and Our Children. I always tell people, We MUST hold Our Leaders accountable.

And that is, regardless if they look like us or not.

As it is, we have two of the most powerful tools

that any person in America can have “Our Money” and “Our Vote” carries a lot of weight, which is why We MUST be careful who we give them to.

As it relates to the “Great Debate” which featured the ten leading Democratic candidates for President, the central focus was placed on gun control and health care, as well as, immigration.

It was the first time all ten candidates appeared on the same platform.

I must admit that several of the candidates stood out to me as I watched them address issues which directly impacts, we Africans living in America.

But overall, I would have to say Beto O’Rourke stole the show. However, Cory Booker, Joe Biden, Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders all made compelling arguments in response to the issues presented to them.

Concluding, I would like to encourage all of our readers to pay close attention to all of the debates involving candidates seeking the office of presidency. We can learn a lot from these candidates just by listening to them talk and paying attention to their mannerisms.

Because in the words of Lyndon B. Johnson, “It’s not doing what is right that’s hard for a President. It’s knowing what is right.”

So, the best way for us to see what type of President is best to serve us, We MUST pay at-tention to how they feel on things that matter to us.

Another Cruel–Irony: The Homeless Pay for their Homelessness

T

here is yet another breath-taking cruel irony to the plight of the homeless. That’s that the homeless pay for their homelessness. They pay in two ways. One is through taxes. The other is through who gets the tax dollars and how those dollars virtually guarantee that the ranks of the homeless will swell even bigger.

First, there’s the tax question. The great myth is that the poor don’t pay taxes. Or at least pay tax dollars that amount to anything. The myth is pedaled as an article of fiscal faith by conservatives, and legions of complaining rich folk.

It serves a couple of cynical purposes. One is that corporations, the rich, and even the middle-class, are burdened down with high taxes to pay for services that the poor as tax slackers don’t pay.

The other is to gouge the federal government for even bigger and more tax breaks for the rich.

Trump has spun this line masterfully with his and the GOP’s multi-trillion-dollar tax heist for the rich. There’s talk of anoth-

er tax heist for them in the pipeline.

A cursory look at the tax numbers blow the conservative’s tax mythmaking apart. A 2017 study by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy found that the poorest of the poor, that’s those with annual income under $19,000 plop in more that 10 percent of the federal tax dollars.

Toss in millions more to that total in California and states with a state income tax. Put bluntly, the poor pay a greater percent of whatever income they make than the wealthiest 1 percent.

That’s just for starters.

If they earn a dollar from work at any point during a given year, they pay payroll taxes. If they put their foot on a car accelerator at any time, they pay gas taxes.

If they buy a taxable consumer item, they pay sales tax. These are all taxes that go into the public tax coffers that supposedly are there to provide public services and goods and some accommodation for shelter at least in theory.

This points to the other part of the cruel irony for the homeless. That’s who gets those tax dollars and public revenue and how they are used to dump even more people on the streets. The tip off about that came in a recent meeting of the uber-wealthy, at the exclusive Harvard Club in New York.

Wealthy investors lined up to get in on yet another tax giveaway to the rich. This time the tax

giveaway was the fancy sounding, but wildly misleading and grossly misnamed “opportunity zone.” The zones were expanded with passage of the 2017 tax bill.

If an investor will invest dollars in an economically distressed neighborhood, the feds will kick in generous tax breaks for those dollars. The rich can hawk their stocks or other investments and dodge capital gains taxes for years by pumping dollars into a zone. They double down on this by not paying any federal tax if they plop their monies into projects in federally certified opportunity zones. Context: Estimates are that capital gains deductions overall cost the treasury nearly 50 billion dollars the past decade.

The idea behind these investments is to increase housing, create jobs, and businesses in poor neighborhoods. If one calls building luxury condos and townhouses with spas for pets, and yoga, complete with trendy coffee houses, housing that the lowest of low income can afford or businesses that will create thousands of jobs for those same low-income persons then the program is doing its job.

The federal dollars that the rich grab from the federal government to build their show piece developments are the very dollars that the homeless in one form or another pay out.

Put another even more brutal way, the poor are subsidizing with their tax and public revenue dollars

those developments which were never designed for them and consign them to the streets.

That’s not all. The spruced-up streets and passageways that surround those developments are alien and forbidden territory for the homeless.

If they stray onto them, they are quickly and unceremoniously shooed away.

Now remember these streets and passageways are also public space.

They are paid for with those same tax dollars the poor and homeless pump into the federal coffer and are pumped back out in the dole of tax breaks to rich investors and mega project developers.

The federal tax loot of the homeless is aided and abetted by cities and counties that eagerly snatch at the promise of development extravaganzas in their city. The developments and projects pad their local tax and revenue purses. At the same time, public officials can brag and kid themselves that they are transforming their cities into world class showpieces of development.

No wonder Trump is the opportunity zone’s number one cheerleader.

He calls them the “hottest thing going” and spouts the bogus line that they create jobs, business investment, and of course housing for the poor. He’s right about one thing.

They do create lots of housing and investment for his billionaire investor pals.

A Resilient People

HOUSTON - August 20, 1619 marks a day in American history where Our Ancestors (over 20 Africans) arrived on the shores of Virginia near a place called Port Comfort (present-day Fort Monroe in Hampton, Virginia).

The irony, however, is that this group of Africans, who were brutally and forcefully stolen from their homeland, would experience everything but Comfort in the centuries to follow.

As it was the African slaves who were brought to this country were made to build a land which would never rightfully become their own.

They were subjected to numerous forms of punishment including: being whipped; shackled and bound; unmercifully beat on; underwent mutilation of their bodies; some were branded to show ownership, or simply to be made out of a mockery; many faced wrongful imprisonment; and of course lynching and being murdered was the final phase of punishment.

In many cases these forms of punishment were the result of some type of disobedience; but there were also times that slaves were mistreated due to the assertion of dominance from their Masters’.

During this era, slaves of both genders were raped, along with many other violent and torturous

acts.

Our ancestors, as disempowered and uneducated as they were, became indentured servants who proved to be the greatest asset to the land of America.

According to, James McPherson’s Battle Cry of Freedom, “In [1860], the nearly 4 million American slaves were worth some $3.5 billion, making them the largest single financial asset in the entire

Had it not been for the struggle Our Ancestors endured, we would have no knowledge of people like: Frederick Douglass, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, Barbara Jordan, Mayor Sylvester Turner, Harriet Tubman, Cicely Tyson, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Sojourner Truth, Roy Douglas Malonson, Pastor F.N. Williams, Ovide Duncantell, Alfre Woodard, Madam C. J. Walker, President Barack & First Lady Michelle Obama; and sure the list is endless when spelling out African-American men and women who made great strides and contributions to American culture to ensure that each generation double-mirrored their successes.

HOUSTON - Recently, Lone Star College-North Harris commemorated the opening of a center in the East Aldine community with a building dedication.

Lone Star College-East Aldine Center’s building dedication began with a ribbon cutting ceremony, followed by an open house.

Public officials and community leaders joined Lone Star College representatives to recognize the occasion. The new center, located at 2430 Aldine Mail Route Rd., will provide a mix of academic college transfer courses, as well as workforce training programs.
