We Must Walk

A

s an African-American man “raised” in America, I have personally witnessed disrespect, unfairness, racism and other un-American characterization displayed frequently against Black people in general and Black males specifically.

When I’m asked about negative activities directed at my people and then asked “how do I respond to such evil”, my answer is , “I walk by faith”, which speaks the truth about the God I serve and how I know we, as a people, will win in the end. You see, when you “walk by faith” you can connect with other real people of all races, who believe in doing the “right thing”.

Just like “fake people” work with other “fake people” to accomplish their devious activities; people who “walk by faith” also come together and through their faith, they flip the script on their enemies. You must understand when you really “walk by faith”, you become fearless and will speak out against evil when confronted with it. I often hear people say that the people who are in power, regardless of their goals, cannot be controlled. Sad to say, this is true if you don’t have the strength and power God gives those who believe in Him and “walk by faith”!

Recently, the world has watched the divisive outdated behavior of Trump and how it has caused problems in America, and the world in general. But, the world is now seeing a brave strong God-inspired effort by the true people of America who

are willing to stop Trump and get him out of the White House.

With the U.S. Congress now being controlled by Democrats, I’m expecting them to vote to impeach this man.

Whether you are willing to acknowledge it or not, the average American is feeling better about our Government since the 2018 election results. Look at how many of Trump’s people, from his staff to governmental appointees have been charged and indicted for crimes associated with assisting him in his unlawful and unethical actions.

This should serve as a warning to others, you don’t insult and disrespect God’s people who “walk by faith”, because God does not approve of this type of behavior and it does not go unpunished. It can plainly be seen that Trump recruits people who are like him, “arrogant and ignorant”. He selects these types of people because he knows these people will do what he tells them. He also knows that true people of God will not disrespect other people or violate their human and civil rights!

Over the years, I’ve spoken and written many articles about how history repeats itself. These words have been shown to be true and are validated by true historical facts. In relation to Trump and people like him who think the only way they can get and keep power is through intimidation, inappropriate criminal behavior and devious racist activities; they should check with God, who can teach them a more excellent way of doing business.

As for the “true Americans”, who really know God is real, God always win and he can defeat any force of evil; “We Must Walk By Faith!” As we walk in faith, we must exercise our rights and vote for changes; after all, this is the true American way!

Why You Sound White?

(Becoming Part II) Through my education, I didn’t just develop skills, I didn’t just develop the ability to learn, but I developed confidence.

- Michelle Obama n the book Becoming by Michelle Obama, she talks about a time when she was talking with some girls her age.

One of the girls asked, “How come you talk like a White girl?” When I read this, it immediately resonated with me. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told, “You sound like a White girl.”

For the longest, I didn’t know how to take it, or even understood what it meant. I would just shake it off and say, ‘no I don’t.’ I didn’t know whether I should be offended about it, laugh about it, but mostly, I was confused about it. Here I was a Black girl being called White.

What did this mean?

After being called this a few times, I eventually told my parents. I needed answers. More importantly, I just wanted to understand. My parents told me that it’s because of how I talk and articulate when speaking.

To others, I sounded proper just how the “White people sounded.”

Just like Michelle Obama’s parents, mine taught me how to enunciate my words and to avoid slang talk. My parents always had us reading and learning new things. We also traveled to different places during family vacations. This helped us gain experience and become well-diverse and knowledgeable about

different cultures and aspects of life.

Today, I know I don’t sound like a White girl, I just articulate what I am saying. I speak English, point blank. I believe as a Black person, there is a certain stereotype we have to continuously fight against and one is that Black people talk “ghetto” or speak “Ebonics,” which is broken American English also known as “African-American English.”

According to Encyclopedia Britannica, scholars think, “Ebonics, like several English Creoles developed from contacts between nonstandard varieties of colonial English and African languages.” The source further adds that this language is typically used by those who have a low level of education. More information about Ebonics includes, “the emergence of Ebonics as a separate dialect may be correlated with the emergence of African-American traditions in music, religious practices, and cooking styles, all of which developed separately from the practices of White Americans.”

Separate practices means separate languages and in that result, it means separate races. So how can we break this stigma of not being able to speak properly? Apparently by “talking and sounding White.” Michelle Obama further talked about how her parents wanted them to succeed in life and one way to do this was how they talked. She states, “The idea was we were to transcend, to get ourselves further…we were expected not just to be smart but to own our smartness-to inhabit it with pride-and this filtered down to how we spoke.”

I am proud of who I am, how I talk and the education I’ve received. I don’t talk White, I just speak English. And if someone else says, I sound like a White girl... I’ll say, ‘Thank You!’

Holiday Helper “Christmas is not as much about opening our presents as opening our hearts.”

I

t’s almost Christmas time.

What are your plans ? Are you excited ? I realize as time goes on that Christmas never gets old but, I am getting older. Old enough to know the truth about old St Nick but, I still share in the excitement of the holiday’s nonetheless. So, this year I’ve decided to do my part in helping along with Holiday cheer.

I started by saving my school money for the month. So that that I can buy everyone in my household a gift from the dollar store. Remember it’s the thought that counts, I told my Mom that I am going to bake cookies and two cakes she agreed to assist me if needed, which it will be. I told my step dad I want to help him hang the lights and wrap the trees in the front yard. Sometimes effort is more than money, because memories can last longer than a dollar.

This Christmas get involved with your family and the community, it’s smallest things can have the biggest impact. If there is an older person on your street, take them some of the cookies you bake, clean out your closet and donate old clothes and toys if you still have them.

Help your local church with Christmas program. For an example, you can fill candy bags or help with the production of the Nativity scene. My family and I feed the homeless and pass out blankets, socks and

other small things. Even though this is a larger scale of helping - the point is to get involved in spreading holiday cheer and showing compassion for one another.

You can make a play list of all the best Christmas music to be played for Christmas morning as you and your family celebrate the holiday. You would be pleasantly suprised to see how much MUSIC MATTERS during the holiday seaason. I can feel Christmas in the air when I hear the temptations croon, “Silent Night.

You can also commit to conducting all the cinematic needs by being the family videographer and taking pictures and videoes of your memories as a family. Assert yourself into helping make the magic during this holiday season. Family is the most important thing in our lives and it’s important that we come together and grow stronger.

Life is not always about receiving but, it’s about giving as well. You have to anticipate your holiday mood, it’s easy for positive emotions to build and grow. That’s one reason why the holiday spirit is so contagious.

When one person is happy, it can lift the spirits of others.

They in turn pass this happiness on, and it all keeps going like a game of “happy tag”. It’s no surprise that people say they wish the holiday mood could continue all year. All the happiness and cheer that puts you in a good mood is good for your health whether you know it or not.

Overall, I believe one of the best gifts we can give is to share our time. An anonymous writer once wrote, “The greatest gift you can give someone is your time. Because when you give your time you are giving a portion of your life that you will never get back.”

We MUST Understand

Negroes Made in America

M

arcus Garvey once said that, “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”

I could not agree with him more, which is why it never ceases to amaze me how so many of our Black folks got all of these opinions about any and everything. But what bothers me the most about these opinionated folks is, many of them have the wrong opinions about the wrong things. With some of these Negroes who are made in America, you just can’t trust them worth a dime.

Despite all of the obvious hardship that the current President is trying to impose on Black folks, there still remains many members from our community that are trying to justify his cause. This is nothing new, because in the past there were Black folks taking up for the cause of the Klu Klux Klan (KKK) and most of us know the history on the basis of their mission. So there will always be some within the group who just have to be the odd balls, if for no other reason than just going against the grain, out of spite.

As it is, we are surrounded by those from our community who will take up for anything and anybody without regard to who they are and where they come from. They would side with folks who don’t look like them, just because it means that they are going against their own people. This reason in part, is why I have labeled them as “Negroes

Made in America”.

The problem with “Negroes Made in America” is that they don’t know the history of their existence in this nation. We MUST Understand that if you don’t know your history, you damn sure don’t understand what’s going on in today’s society. So you will stand and support anything, even if it means that you are hurting yourself and those you love in the process.

Certain media outlets have a way of allowing some of these “Negroes Made in America”, to make a mockery of themselves.

If you were to watch and listen to some of the Democratic and Republican debates, it is no accident that they feature Black analysts who don’t have a clue about the way that things really are. Some of these outlets take pride in giving platforms to Black folks who support the cause of the current President, because it sends out a very broad message.

They want to reflect the idea that things have changed for the betterment of we, Africans living in America. Addressing the faithful and loyal readers of African-American News & Issues, we are living in an era, where people want to hold fast to the mindset that we should just forget the past. They say “let bygones be bygones…” But that is foolish, because you can’t forget the past. The past is considered history and true history, explains what’s happening today.

We MUST Understand that it is imperative that we never forget what happened on yesterday. Because what happened on yesterday, will at some point repeat itself again in some shape, form or fashion. Even the Bible says that, “there is nothing new under the sun”. Everything that is happening now, especially as it relates to African-Americans has happened before. So for these “Negroes made in Amer-

ica”, who choose to teach our future generation that it is a new day and everything has changed; they do not realize that they are, setting them up for failure.

There are those who believe just because we HAD a Black president, that we no longer live in a racist and discriminatory society. But, all you have to do is look around and pay attention to the agenda of the current President. So far, he has proven that the primary reason he was moved to become Commander-in-Chief was to blot out the history of the first acknowledged Black POTUS. So we must be careful in our thinking and delivery of conveying that the past is no longer important to our present. History will repeat itself again, as it always has. So to these “Negroes Made in America” who think that the past is irrelevant, if they are not careful; neglecting the truths of the past and focusing on the lies of today will wipe them completely out of history all together.

Throughout the history of Africans living in America, there has always been some form of divisiveness that has existed to oppress our people. So don’t be fooled by thinking that things have changed all that much, they have only materialized to accommodate the ever-changing advancement of a modern society.

This is one of the reasons that African-American News & Issues exists and will continue to. We thrive on addressing and highlighting current and historical realties that are affecting our community.

And believe it or not, some of these “Negroes Made in America” are negative impacts on our race and they do not even realize what they are doing; and if they do, they are just too selfish and small-minded to care.

By Rebecca S. Jones HOUSTON - “We are the few, the intellectual and the educated; and we accept only those students who want to achieve.”

Those words were recited every morning from the loud speaker, which soared across the campus of Forest Brook Senior High School when I was a student there. Although faint visions of that proud “Blue and Gold” are still visible, much of the “Blue” has been overshadowed by “Black”. The word “High” has been replaced with “Middle” on the school board and while there are many faculty and staff I do not recognize one thing still remains the same - that fervent spirit of “young intellectuals who want to achieve.”

Recently, I was privileged the opportunity to return home and what a delight it was. Not returning as a Magnet student or the Senior Class Vice President of the graduating class of 2000, but, as the Editor of African-American News & Issues.

As Ms. Quwanda Forest (Production) and I entered the classroom of Dr. Cheryl BanksJones, we were welcomed with

smiles and intelligent conversation from a mixed crowd of 6-8 graders. Though the two of us were eagerly anticipating sitting down discussing journalistic styles and publication formats with our hosts’; we were overtaken by the ingenious minds who began teaching us lessons instead. (LOL) Nelmy Y. Esparza jump-started the Journalistic conversation.

“You know… nothing never really goes around like news, unless it’s something stupid – like fights and stuff. But, anything that is important like events and things that really matter never really go around. So, for the people who actually care and want to read the newspapers, they do.”

Jayla Hollins chimed in and shared how the Journalism team has been an asset in her life.

“The newspaper helped me to become a better writer. Not just having the newspaper but, also having art classes because art isn’t just drawing. It can be acting, writing stories and different things that express creativity.”

Dr. Cheryl Banks-Jones

The Force Behind the Pen

Dr. Cheryl Banks-Jones became a resident of Houston in 2005, after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Not willing to allow her circumstance to overcome her volition, she began educating in Texas just as she had in her home state.

In past she has taught as an instructor at George Washington Carver Middle School, her graduating high school, McDonogh 35 College Preparatory High School in Louisiana and La Marque Intermediate Technology Academy in La Marque. She began serving as an educator at Forest Brook Middle School in August, 2016. Although she has only been there a couple of years, she has already planted a great deal of seeds in the lives of her students. While facilitating as a History teacher, Dr. Jones saw the need to create a Journalism team for students.

She was inspired by the fact that the middle school had never created a yearbook of their own. Therefore, she compiled a group of enthusiastic students

and began teaching them how to format and layout a newspaper.

“It was a method of teaching them how to apply what they were learning in class,” she said. She continued, “To me, it was important getting them to read, write and do the higher order of thinking.” Since establishing the Journalism team she has noticed that it has helped to “increase students’ confidence within themselves, build self-esteem, increase test scores and has assisted with their articulation.” All of the projects of the team are student-lead. She shared, “They have an urge to give back to the community and one of those results was displayed when they went to plant trees in Stewart Park.”

As it relates to the expectations of the Journalism team, Dr. Jones hopes that it will increase their awareness so that they can grow to become productive citizens

after they leave. She strongly believes working with the youth and educating them is a calling in her life. Additionally, she stressed the importance of teaching her students how to use cursive handwriting instead of print. Ultimately, her desire is to develop them to compete with other students on a city to nation-wide scale.

Dr. Jones earned both her Undergraduate and Master’s degrees from Xavier University in New Orleans achieving Accounting and Curriculum and Instruction degrees, respectively. She also received her Doctorate in Christian Counseling from ACT Bethel Bible College. Today she maintains her greatest accomplishment was accomplishing her doctoral degree; because it has lead her to do more and push herself and her students even further.

To date, Dr. Jones has dedicated twenty-years to educating young minds. In respect to Forest Brook, she is grateful to Principal Gentry for seeing the vision and giving them the opportunity to bring their Journalistic

goals to fruition.

She also thanks 21st Century who has been very instrumental in helping the team accomplish their achievements.- AANI

Avoiding the Holiday Blues

But for some, the holidays bring hurt. Caused by factors including the weather, separation,

The retail industry’s “holiday hype” presents an overly sentimental, nostalgic, and even imaginary notion of the holidays (usually to try to sell you something). Sill, feelings of sadness, loneliness, or depression don’t automatically vanish just because it’s the holidays. Acknowledge your pain, be open and honest with others, refuse to feel guilty, and get help if necessary. It’s ok to laugh! Don’t

4. Take time for yourself – Why is it called holiday depression? Because, for most people, these feelings don’t occur at other times of the year. Remind yourself of what you enjoyed during the previous months, then continue them during the holidays.

Make yourself a priority! Instead of a “Discount Double Check,” give yourself an “Emotional Double Check”. Give yourself permission to feel what you feel. Just don’t stay there too long! Getting enough rest, eating and drinking in moderation, exercising, and continuing other favorite activities can maintain normalcy, routine, control, and predictability.

5. Consider that your depression may actually be caused by this time of year – Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, occurs because of reduced exposure to sunlight—which is just what happens during the holiday season when daylight hours are shorter. Check with your doctor to see if light therapy might be beneficial for you.

6. Help others – Soup kitchens, homeless shelters, nursing homes, churches, and scores of other organizations can always use volunteers, especially at

critical times of the year. Additionally, you’ll benefit from the company of other people around you rather than being alone.

And, help others help you!

Tell those who care about you what you do or don’t need from them. They often don’t know how to help, or what to say, but want to.

7. Bury the hatchet – Perfect families don’t magically appear during the holidays, but family conflicts can. “Letting go” and forgiving can help heal past wounds. Additionally, family feuds can even be deliberately set aside until after the high-tension holidays in order to facilitate the peace and enjoyment of everyone at this special time.

8. Start your own traditions – Both families and traditions change with time. (Every tradition had to start somewhere!)

Rather than reminiscing over the “good old days,” accept the fact that change may be necessary, grasp the season as it is now, look forward to the future, and create your own family traditions that can be enjoyed and even preserved for future generations.

9. Keep your alcohol intake low – Don’t pour gasoline on a fire. Remember, alcohol has a depressive effect on your nervous system, so if you’re experiencing the holiday blues, drinking too much alcohol will only worsen your depression.

10. Rededicate yourself to your spirituality – The “reason for the season” is often swallowed up by maddening materialism that can distract from the history, meaning, and significance of holiday celebrations.

Step back, slow down, and refocus on transcendent, eternal matters. Rededicate yourself to spiritual pursuits, such as church attendance, church work, prayer life, and other disciplines. Regain the focus originally intended by this time of year.

11. Every day, Veterans who served in the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard connect with proven resources and effective treatments for depression and find solutions that improve their lives. It can be difficult to handle depression on your own, so talking to your family and friends can be a first step. You can also consider connecting with: ● Your doctor. Ask if your doctor has experience treating Veterans or can refer you to someone who does. If you feel comfortable enough with your physician, he or she may be able to help you find tools to manage loss of interest or pleasure even without direct experience with Veterans. ● A mental health professional, such as a therapist ● Your local VA Medical Center or Vet Center. VA specializes in the care and treatment of Veterans. ● A spiritual or religious adviser

In its 20th year, HCDE Head Start’s partnership with Bates Collision Centers is giving away cars No. 35 and 36 to two moms who will be recognized with the Responsible Parenting Award.

Owners Lee and Leila Bates have made this annual giveaway a priority because they recognize the sacrifices parents often make in order to provide for their children.

Banks and Gulley were nominated by Head Start Center managers. Bates employees donate time to work on the cars and help fill them with gifts, and other community members and businesses donate gas, insurance and materials needed to rehab the cars.

giving to others, there’s no doubt that we are the ones that receive the biggest gift, the gift of helping others.� “It’s our favorite day of the year, when we get to see the smiles on the families’ faces as they tear off the bright red wrapping paper to find their shiny ‘new’ car inside,� said Leila Bates. “It’s especially fun to hear the giggles of the kiddos as they open the trunk to find it loaded with gifts with their names on them. About Sheena Gulley, HCDE Head Start Fifth Ward Center, recipient of the 35th rehabbed car: Sheena Gulley is a single mother of two sons Marcus, 13, and Jay’Me, 2 and two daughters Zyriah, 8 and Myriah, 4.

Gulley relies on Metro and Uber to get to and from work.

She is unable to spend much time with her children or attend their school activities because of no transportation and work schedule. She will soon begin taking online GED classes with HCDE, which are free and offer flexible learning opportunities for busy adults.

About Parishellia Banks, HCDE Head Start Baytown, recipient of the 36th rehabbed car: Parishellia Banks is currently raising her niece’s two-yearold son, Jayce, after she passed away during childbirth.

Banks relies on family and friends to take her and her great nephew to work and school. She also suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure and finds it difficult to make doctor appointments because of no transportation.

About Harris County Department of Education: HCDE provides special education, therapy services, early education, adult education and after-school programming. Services are funded by government grants, fees and a local property tax of approximately $9 per homeowner. For every dollar in local property tax collected, HCDE provides $4.40 in services to the 25 Harris County school districts. We operate four campuses for students with profound special education needs and adjudicated or recovering youth who require a low, student-teacher ratio and highly structured environment.

Annual Jazz Soiree

HOUSTON - The Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. with One Delta Plaza Educational Center (ODPEC) honored four NASA African-American women leaders at the 17th Annual Jazz SoirĂŠe Scholarship Fundraiser on Dec. 2, at the Hilton Americas-Houston Hotel in downtown Houston.

The theme- “Harlem Renaissance: All That Jazz�- provided the historical musical framework to celebrate four pioneering STEM leaders and local “Hidden Figures� serving at Houston’s Johnson Space Center. The event raised tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships to be awarded in early 2019 to high-achieving, college-bound students.

The NASA honorees receiving the Geraldine Pittman Woods Award for Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) were: Vanessa Wyche, Johnson Space Center Deputy Director; Annette Moore, Johnson Space Center Chief Information Officer; Debra L. Johnson, Johnson Space Center Director of the Office of Procurement; and Donna Blackshear-Reynolds, Chief of the Spaceflight Operations Resources Office in the Office of the Chief Financial Officer.

Wyche, Moore and Johnson are members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Blackshear-Reynolds is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Houston musicians Joe Carmouche and Lloyd Hughes immersed attendees in the smooth sounds of jazz. In addition to live entertainment, the affair included dinner, dancing, a silent auction and vendors. There were 22 celebrity waiters contributing $1,000 or more whose generosity will enhance the more than $120,000 awarded by the Houston Alumnae Chapter this academic year.

xxxx gling. Residents of Peppertree Manor, Palisades of Inwood, Chelsea Senior Apartments, and Primrose Casa Bella Apartments were in attendance.

This red carpet event was filled with glitz and glamour, live music and great food. Ladies and gentlemen were decked out in their finest evening attire.

Some walked down the catwalk as part of the Acres of Angels Fashion show. There was also a hats contest, a Sunday-best and evening wear exhibition featuring men of style. Guests were treated to a lavish sitdown meal catered by Gourmet Soul. Special guests and speakers included Mayor Sylvester Turner, Claude Cummings, Vice President of Communication Workers of America 6222, Houston City Council Member in At-Large Position 4, Amanda Edwards and judicial candidates and elected officials.

Miss Hawkins, a beautiful lady, and resident of Peppertree Manor that has a disability but doesn’t allow anything to stop her from living a graceful, dignified life was honored as this year’s Acres of Angel’s Queen.

Mr. Harris, also from Peppertree Manor, is this year’s Acres of Angel’s King.

Edna Griggs, Acres of Angels CEO, puts events like this together in order to “enrich the lives” of senior citizens living in her community.
