What Color Is Diversity?

“Why use paint brushes when Q-Tips are cheaper?” When a response is expected to be laced with a thought-provoking rational explanation, but instead you get practical and logical reasoning, it is assured that you are talking to a different type of millennial. I had the pleasure of speaking with New Orleans native Devonte Giovanni Rhea about his unique, “dope” art style that drips with color. Mastering his craft in only a few short years is a testament to his passion, drive, and self-motivated mentality.

Positive that he has been painting for all of his life, his answer was jaw-dropping. “I’ve only been painting for three years. I was always artistic as a child. My mom is very artistic, and that’s how I got into doing art.”

Although DeVonte was born in “The Big Easy,” his mother believed her gifted son would have more opportunities as a black male in a different setting. At the young age of three, DeVonte and his mother moved to Washington State. His mother enrolled in nursing school shortly after and sent DeVonte back to his hometown to live with his father for a year. DeVonte would later move with his Grandmother in California, only to return to Washington State after a few months.

He was then raised in Washington State until he returned to his beloved birth city to attend Xavier University on a full scholarship.

Ironically, DeVonte is not a social person, but his goal is to elevate his clout through social media outlets. “I have developed a unique style.

I see a lot of art on Instagram, and it looks like someone else’s art. I wanted to make sure my art didn’t look like anybody else’s.” To say that “VonDon Art” stands out amongst other artists would be an understatement. The arrangement of colors dripping into different color blocks allows DeVonte to show diversity as opposed to race and skin tones. “It took me six months to come up with a style that I was comfortable with, 2

even with the colors. I use the different colors to represent diversity. As far as the dripping, people have so many layers to them personality wise and character; I just wanted to represent that.” DeVonte doesn’t want his interpretation to cloud the judgment of his audience. He is pleased with allowing people to come up with their ideas as to how he came up with his niche.

“There hasn’t been a day that I have not painted because I love it so much. I do it every day for hours on in. I wake up, and I’m painting until I go to bed.” DeVonte’s dedication and commitment to be successful will serve his craft respectfully.

Using only acrylic paints, Q-Tips, and his fingers, DeVonte has been able to communicate life’s struggles, relevant issues, and icons of entertainment through art. “I feel like it has to be something that I’m going through, something I’ve been through, or something that I can relate to for me to paint something that looks amazing. It has always been something personal that sparks inspiration for me.”

Coloring diversity his way, DeVonte is destined to be one of the most talented artists that society will appreciate during a time where the world is experiencing political unrest, differing ethnic strongholds synchronous with gender rights movements, and racial anarchy dismissed as privilege. DeVonte is very much aware, relevant, and needed.
