PRAIRIE VIEW - Waller County strikes again as new “address change form” threatens the students of Prairie View and their right to vote. Elections Administrator Christy Eason is requiring that students who registered with the campus address fill out a change of address form on voting day. This comes after a 2016 agreement between Waller County and University officials that students should use the campus address to register, due to a lack of individual mailboxes on campus.

I

wrote an article a little while ago about the Supreme Court and how outdated it is. With the recent selection of Brett Kavanaugh, who was sworn in as the 114th Supreme Court Justice, I know the time has come for “We the People” to all get together and eliminate the outdated U.S. Supreme Court. We can do this elimination and it “will not” be that hard, because there are more of us , true God respecting Americans, than there are fake racist people.

Also, in the past, I have written about why we should vote to eliminate the Electoral College System. As I revisit the “politics” and purposes of these two systems, I feel even more strongly that now is the time for us to come together and vote these un-American systems and people out of office.

I live in East Texas and I can see the current government, under the leadership of Trump as President, has taken us back in time. However, we do have checks and balances imbedded in our democracy which does allow us to vote evil out of office and to impeach those like Trump and Kavanaugh!

Texas Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke, a democrat is running against Texas Senator Ted Cruz for the U.S. Senate.

O’Rourke is the right person to represent Texas. Sadly to say, Ted Cruz is only a tool for Trump to put his un-American racist outdated policies in our nation. Beto O’Rourke is a true American who stands up for every Texan and he will represent

Texas and America much better than the inept Ted Cruz.

Beto’s wife, Amy O’Rourke, and his sister, Charlotte O’Rourke, spoke very well at a Democrat Rally for Beto held in Crockett, this month. The Democratic Party of Crockett and Houston County under the leadership of President Sharon Berry organized and hosted the rally.

As to be expected, there were a few protestors at the Democratic Rally in Crockett. One of those protestors is a local Crockett racist who has confederate flags hanging on his business and rides in a truck with a rebel flag.

Go Vote!

- Franklin D. Roosevelt t seems as if each election gets crazier and crazier.

There is so much going on in the world that it’s hard to keep up at times. With the upcoming election vastly approaching, the need to vote is more apparent than ever.

Politics is not a subject I like to discuss, but since the last presidential election, everyone needs to get out and vote regardless of who you are voting for.

If you want change, voting is one way to do it. From city elections, all the way to national elections, you have to exercise your right to vote to impact change. I know you have heard the saying, “If you don’t vote, then you can’t complain.”

It’s true. The people that are elected into office make decisions which impact us on day-to-day basis regardless of whether or not you feel like it affects you or not.

So if you don’t like something and you don’t vote, well, you can’t complain about anything that is going on. You don’t have that right, because you had the right to vote and you did not exercise it.

When people don’t vote, they don’t realize the impact it has in the long run. What people fail to realize is that, it isn’t just about the present, but it’s

about the future as well. The politicians who are elected into these positions will keep these positions anywhere from 2 to 4 years, and if they continue to get re-elected, then that time frame is extended.

In addition, when people in elected office make decisions that positively impacts you, you want that decision to stay and you want that person to continue in office. Well, if you don’t vote, then the next elected person can undo everything the last person set in stone.

If you’re African-American like me, then not voting shouldn’t even cross your mind.

If you know your history, then you know our ancestors fought for the right to vote. Being able to register to vote and then exercising the right is a privilege.

We are so privileged!

Have you ever thought about that? I don’t like politics, but I do believe in change, and I strongly believe in exercising my right for those that couldn’t.

Every time I go to the polls, I think of those who came long before me, and it inspires me to continue to vote. I do it for them, not myself. In this day and time, our voices need to be heard more than ever.

Early voting starts October 22nd, and the very last day to vote is November 6th, which is Election Day. I plan to go and cast my vote as soon as early voting begins. You should too.

It doesn’t matter to me who you are voting for, as long as you vote.

Finally, I will conclude with the words once expressed by Luis Gutierrez, on the subject of voting. He said, “Too many people fought too hard to make sure all citizens of all colors, races, ethnicities, genders and abilities can vote to think that not voting somehow sends a message.”

We MUST Understand

ormally, I try to start my editorials off with some type of nice, pleasant, inspiring or subject-appropriate quote. Unfortunately, I am not in the mood to try to paint a pretty picture of an ugly situation.

Appalled, embarrassed, offended, insulted are not even strong enough to describe the discontent that I feel for certain board members who sit on the Houston Independent School District, at the top of that list is Diana Davila.

I am confused, because the correct term is Board of Trustees. The irony is, many who wear the title and are supposed to be fulfilling the role have overlooked the root word for their titles’, TRUST. I am trying to understand what makes a person who cannot even be trusted, eligible to sit in an elected chair which is designated to be a trustee.

Something is not right about this.

After witnessing the HISD board meeting a couple weeks ago and seeing how a story we broke a couple months ago entitled, “HISD Witch Hunt” written by Gerry Monroe came to light in live and living color; I can’t say that I am surprised by the actions of those whose

motives had already been identified and called out.

Nevertheless, I have to say once and for all it is TIME OUT! I am sick and tired of being sick and tired of the way that many of our Brown brothers and sisters play the minority card when it is convenient for them.

I am sick of them flip-flopping at the drop of a dime. There was a point and time in history when Black and Brown shared similar stories and could identify with one another.

There was time when we struggled to come up together. There was a time when our Brown brothers and sisters were vocal and physical in the fight against slavery. If you don’t believe me, do some fact checking on the true cause of the Mexican Revolution. But, oh how time has brought about a change.

To that regard, I feel that it is necessary to send out a strong message. There should be no expectation from them of us, until Diana Davila is removed off of the board. Her racist and discriminatory personality has exposed itself to the fullest and we will not bow down.

Just as she wanted Dr. Lathan ousted, we are demanding the same for her. She needs to be put in check because, I am tired of this game they are playing at the expense of our innocent children and our hard-earned tax dollars.

I have been accused of being off point in some cases. But, I will not bow and I will not sway in this particular situation. Playing with the value and quality of education for our future generations is a major catastrophe and I cannot afford to sit silent on an issue which heavily impacts those from within our communities.

After all, that is the main mission of African-American News & Issues. We strive to highlight current and historical realities affecting our communities.

With that being stated, I have to state just as I have a problem with the Brown sisters and brother who made their stances known loud and clear, I also have a problem with those in Black leadership who have a place and a right to stand up and say something and don’t. I will admit that I was extremely proud of Wanda Adams that night. She stood her ground no matter what others may have said about her. She called the racist scene that was presented before her, just what it was.

I understand that President Jones wanted to allow everyone to have their voices heard, but as president you have the power – use it!

I appreciate those like Boris Miles, who called the State Board of Education in. And I believe is on to something with that. Because if they cannot act as civil leaders, then perhaps some other entity or agency should take over.

Because it seems to me, with all of the commotion and confusion going on, the main priority that administrators, the board and other officials should be upholding is the very one that is being neglected.

In fact, if we were to do a fact check on the track records of past superintendents, one thing is for sure.

Despite those that tried to destroy her, she has proven to be the main one truly concerned for the overall welfare and academical success of the students within her district.

What happened last Thursday night to Interim Superintendent Dr. Grenita Lathan was, without a doubt, racism at its finest.

Now, I know for a fact it was racism. The removal of Lathan was a slap in the face. I have never in all my life seen open racism from racists as it pertains to children.

As much as everyone tries to complain about me, they have yet to own up to the fact that we have racists running our school system. And, they are destroying our school system. And, the people that support them, at this point, are racists themselves.

If you were not there let me give you a glimpse of what happened. Almost every agenda item was postponed until a later date. Why? Because, as usual, they were trying to undermine Grenita. They will never understand, you can’t undermine greatness. No matter how many times they tried to marginalize her, she outshined them.

These people made sure that they ran thru the agenda, so they could get to the agenda item they really wanted. They wanted to undermine the good Dr., but as usual she made them look small.

Now, I was at home watching this on my phone.

Then, all of a sudden, Diana Davila made a motion to FIRE Dr. Grenita Lathan and install Abe Saveedra as Interim Superintendent. I was like WHAT THE HELL?!?!

I left my house and drove to HISD in seven minutes flat.

When I got out the car I didn’t know what I would do. But when I got in the board room my emotions took over. I said some things that I must apologize for.

But, I meant every single word.

Abe wasn’t coming back to Houston.

There was press conference this past Saturday at Emancipation Park. Every Black leader you could think of was there.

Congresswoman Shelia Jackson Lee was the coach. The starting guards were Congressman Al Green and State Senator Boris Miles. The starting forwards were State Rep Alma Allen and Harold Dutton. Every African-American faithbased leader in the city was there. Also, other organizations that were there was: NAACP, the BLM, the UUAA and a host of justice fighters.

It was apparent that the removal of Dr. Lathan wasn’t going to fly. Trust me, if these five board members wanted to go to war, we were ready to take them to war.

Senator Miles made it clear that a walking quorum may have been formed by these rogue trustees. If that happened, then they are in clear violation of The Texas Open Meeting Act. I know for a fact that they did violate the law.

Now, the very next day tweets went out to say Dr. Lathan would be reinstalled as Interim Superintendent. Point blank she should have never been removed.

Dr. Lathan is your only choice now, nobody is coming here to take a job with you clowns. Dr. Lathan has taken more punches from you racists than Ali in his prime. Her grace and elegance have been unshakable. Every one of you great White/Latino hopes have failed. Yet, you keep trying to get them appointed.

You’re trying to get to the money. We know a new bond is being proposed. We know vendors are targets. We know who you racists are now. That’s why Jolanda kept saying LET THEM VOTE. So, that way you could expose yourself.

If you think this board will

ever work together you are crazy. There is no trust in that room. There is no respect in that room. So, honestly, we need a redo. Our kids deserve better.

To allow the behavior of crooks and racists to exist, at this point, turns my stomach. For one-night Jolanda, Wanda, and Rhonda, put our kids first. If they were going to go out they were going to go out swinging. For that, our community applauds them. Not only did they save Lathan’s job they saved a lot of Blacks’ jobs that would have been stripped from them under the new regime.

They have forced this board to get itself in order. Should TEA takeover? At this point, this kangaroo court don’t have a choice.

And, for those that say no, I say this. Sit your racist behind down. You are no better than the KKK. These people have to go.

If they stay you better believe black people ain’t having it.

Latino leaders to cry now about black and brown unity. Until you check your people, we as African Americans don’t want to hear it. Until you ask Diana Davila to resign the communities we work with will not work with you.

I want to send a special thank you to all the politicians, clergy members, and community members that stood up for this great woman. And to all those that want to see her go, that ain’t happening. Our community is going to make sure we support her, and she keeps shining.

Line all you racists up and I promise we will take them out too. Grenita deserves respect.

And, if you don’t want a protest in front of your house, at the restaurant you eat in, or the church you attend, you better get your mind right or you will have 5000 angry Monroe’s in your business.

“The change of address cards won’t work. There’s hundreds of students registered this way and that could mean long lines. It needs to be fixed,” Mattox said.

Jacob Aronowitz, Regional Field Director to Mike Siegel was arrested for attempting to deliver a letter to Waller County Judge Trey Duhon and Waller County Elections Administrator Christy Eason with concerns on voter suppression October 10th.

A Press conference with participants ranging between Student Leaders, community activist, Democratic frontrunners and other champions of the community gathered October 11th to combat a decision by the Waller County Election Administration that many feels are an infringement of their constitutional rights.

The letter asks the County to update voter registration records as the “safest and surest method to protect voter rights.”

“No one should face hostility when they are trying to have their voices heard by their own government,” Siegel wrote in the news release.

“This extreme reaction by Waller County officials is unacceptable, but sadly not surprising given the county’s long history of abusing power and voting rights violations.”

This Historically Black College and University (HBCU) has run into this level of systematic oppression before. Waller County required students to fill out residential questionnaires to vote. This complication was taken all the way to the supreme court in the Symm vs. United States trail for voters rights in 1979 where it was ruled unconstitutional and infract on the rights alluded to us in the 15th

Congressman Al Green, released a statement in response to possible voter participation irregularities in Waller. County.

“Waller County has a long history of voter disenfranchisement as it relates to African-Americans and the students at Prairie View A&M University. In the historic 1979 case of Symm v. United States, the Supreme Court ruled that students at Prairie View A&M University had the right to vote in Prairie View. During the week of October 8, 2018, I received credible reports that students registered to vote on campus at Prairie View A&M would be required to vote at an off-campus location on election day and/or sign some additional paperwork. This could have thwarted students from exercising their right to vote. Finding this unacceptable, I alerted the U.S. Department of Justice about these reports and requested an investigation. I also went to the university and attended a rally with student and community leaders concerning these issues. Sometime thereafter, these concerns were addressed. Although these concerns have been addressed, we must continue to monitor developments at Prairie View A&M University as the history of suppressing student voting in Waller County is abysmal.” amendment.

A decade later in 1992, 19 Prairie View students were indicted with criminal charges when trying to use their campus address to vote for voting fraud charges by the Waller County Grand Jury; later using these charges to scare students into submission.

In 2003, a former Waller County district attorney wrote in a local publication that he planned to indict with voter fraud any student who didn’t meet his personal requirement for legal voting residency while 2006, 700 student voters had their votes “challenged” for having the audacity of a Black college voting in a primarily White community.

Lisa Seger, the Democratic candidate for Texas House District 3 took to Twitter.

“Waller County - whose his-

tory of disenfranchising the student body at Prairie View A&M University is so legendary that its efforts were brought to the Supreme Court in 1979, is at it again,” Seger tweeted. She said the statement of address forms are a barrier to discourage students from voting.

Once they realize that this wasn’t a legal battle they would win, Waller county tried other practices that were implemented to stop Blacks from voting.

In 2008, students were for the 3,000 registered voters on the campus, the nearest voting poll was a minimum of 30 miles away with most students not having a means of transportation. It wasn’t until 2013 that the students received a voting location on campus.

Eventually, Texas Secretary of State, Rolando Pablos released a statement guaranteeing that no

student would have to undergo any unneccesary forms or procedures to vote.

“It has been communicated and confirmed that the Waller County plan ensures, as it was always intended to do, that all students residing on campus who are registered to vote in the county will be able to cast their ballots at the Precinct 309 polling location on campus, and that no students will be impeded, hampered, or otherwise delayed in exercising their constitutional right to cast a ballot in the upcoming General Election.” Pablos said.

“No change of address form or statement of residence will be required prior to voting. After students vote, they will be able to update their address for future elections” The democratic candidate for congress Mike Siegal, who wrote the initial letter and whose

field director was arrested, said that the only solution against this long history against the student body is to reform the Voting Act all together with more specific legislature and making a poll day a national holiday.

“We need to strengthen the Voting act. If the power of voting is one of our nations greatest values than voting should be one of the most important days,” Siegal said.

Waller County is 70.5 percent white, according to Census data, while 82 percent of Prairie View A&M’s student body is Black, university data from spring 2018 show and with the university seeing record freshman enrolment numbers, more than 8,700 students are enrolled at the historically Black university.

Black Women and Breast

Breast cancer affects all population groups, yet age, race, ethnicity, income, insurance coverage and other factors influence who will develop cancer and who will survive. Although the overall rate of breast cancer is similar for Black and White women, African-American women are 42 percent more likely to die from the disease.

Other disparities for African-American women compared with White women include a higher rate of breast cancer before age 40, a greater likelihood of being diagnosed at a late stage and an increased risk of having triple-negative breast cancer, which tends to be more aggressive.

The biological reasons for breast cancer disparities among African-Americans are not well understood.

Triple-negative breast cancer, which makes up 15 to 20 percent of all breast cancers, is twice as common among Black women and is often diagnosed at a younger age.

Women with triple-negative disease are more likely to have BRCA gene mutations, an inherited factor that increases the risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

Yet, despite their higher rates of triple-negative breast cancer and younger average age at diagnosis, Black women are less likely to be referred for genetic testing than White women. “The quality of care and where you get your care is very important,� says Lucile L. Adams-Campbell, PhD, associate director for minority health and health disparities research at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington, DC. Care choices may be limited by poverty, lack of adequate insurance, family situation, lack of transportation

and living in an area without good services.

Black women very often experience longer delays between diagnosis and the start of treatment. A recent study at an Ohio cancer center found that it took 62 days for breast cancer treatment to begin for African-American women compared with 36 days for White women. PV’s Top Ladies attend National Council of Negro Women Conference in Duncanville DUNCANVILLE - Recently, the Prairie View Chapter of the Top Ladies of Distinction Incorporated attended the Ninth Texas State Unity Conference in Duncanville, held by the National Council of Negro Women with Lady Dorothy Allen Chimney, the Eighth National President of Top Ladies, as the Texas State Convener.

The National Council of Negro Women which was established in 1935 has worked to serve humankind, through its programs and projects of Economic and Entrepreneurial Development International Development, Research and Public Policy with the NCNW continued mission of its commitment to strengthen the resolve to: “lead, develop and advocate

At the close of the weekend, there was the Bethune/ Height brunch on the morning of the 18th. At the brunch, the National Council Women, all dressed in white attire with big hats, honored its legacy life and life-time members and Bethune Achievers.
