It is easy being green – looking back at 2015 In her recent Sealed Air Blog, Diversey Care President Dr. Ilham Kadri,

who visited South Africa during 2015 to address the local professional

Welcome to another new year and best wishes for the remaining months of 2016. Remaining optimistic, may it bring new opportunities, interesting developments and progression for all stakeholders in the professional cleaning industry. Our first issue for 2016 introduces a new format – the combination of the January/ February issue with the annual Buyer’s Guide – it forms a compact and multi-purpose journal for ease of reference to end users and facility service providers. Apart from being an up-to-date and elaborate form of reference, this issue offers the latest in industry news, informative features on hand dryers and cleaning equipment rental. The South African Textile Services Association (SATSA) is also prominently featured as the industry body prepares for its first annual general meeting later this year. An exciting gathering to look forward to is undoubtedly this year’s ISSA/Interclean show to be held in Amsterdam from 10-13 May. This event is regarded as the largest event in the world, where cleaning professionals meet to stay ahead of industry trends and view the latest product innovations. African Cleaning Review will cover this event extensively in order to bring you the latest industry developments as well as future trends. As usual, I wish to call on all companies within the industry to share their news, new appointments and new product launches with us. With a growing subscriber base, we are able to best promote your activities both in print and digital formats. I look forward to interacting with you throughout this year in order to best highlight the many developments and advancements made within this rapidly evolving industry. Our key aim remains to educate and inform end users as to the difference this industry’s services and products can make in contributing to workplace hygiene solutions.

looks back at the past year and highlights some of the most notable industry trends and developments.

F

or me, the end of every year always seems to be phenomenally busy, even chaotic at times. However, during this time, I think it is important to find a quiet moment in the midst of the storm to pause and take stock of the trends, events and changes that shaped the past year. And, for 2015, this is no small task – both for the cleaning and hygiene industry and for everybody at Sealed Air and Diversey Care.

It is easy being green Not by coincidence, 2015 has been a year of renewed sustainability commitments and the advent of the Circular Economy. For those of us in the hygiene industry, green cleaning is not exactly a recent phenomenon. However, during 2015 there has been a resurgence of interest in eco-friendly cleaning. This is perhaps in large part due to recent scientific breakthroughs, which have seen the development of products, that combine environmentally friendlycredentials with performance and efficiency. New, professional-grade products, such as Diversey Care’s SURE™, not only ensure that we, as an industry, are helping safeguard people from the effects of harsh chemicals, but also that we are protecting the environment for the sake of future generations – all without compromising performance.

Robotics: The future is here This increased focus on green cleaning brings me to another key trend which shaped the industry during last year – namely, robotics. Advances in technology have created a host of new avenues to achieve more sustainable cleaning, and the emergence of increasingly advanced robotics as truly product-efficient, water-saving and waste-reducing solutions has been a hugely significant example of this. The acquisition of Intellibot Robotics during 2015 by Diversey Care underscored our belief in an increasingly ‘robotic’ future, particularly in the field of floor cleaning. These machines now sit at the core of Diversey Care’s ‘The Internet of Clean’ programme – a concept that applies tech innovations such as connectivity, big data, remote control, distance monitoring, augmented reality and, of course, robotics, to our overall offering.

Reaffirming commitments to gender diversity During 2015 a number of initiatives were launched throughout our industry which showcased and confirmed a real commitment to drive forward the gender diversity agenda. It has been proven time and time again that a more gender diverse workplace – one which inspires men and women alike to reach their full potential – is far better positioned to

I have also long believed that the treatment of women is a very accurate barometer of progress. Therefore, as a forward-looking, modern and ambitious industry, we have a real responsibility to ensure that gender diversity is actively championed. It has been so encouraging to see programmes which aim to promote more inclusive workplaces, and celebrate the men and women who are pursuing this, take centre stage during last year – from ISSA’s Hygieia Network,

which is committed to developing female cleaning industry professionals at all levels and experience, to Sealed Air’s own WIN (Women’s Initiative Network), which aims to ensure that Sealed Air attracts, retains and advances the professional development of women. To me, these initiatives prove, not for the first time, that our industry takes its moral obligations seriously, and is at the forefront of driving positive change in the world. It has been a remarkable year for our industry and I am very proud of having played my part personally

Dr. Ilham Kadri in its progress. With a 2015 full of technological advances and progressive moves to improve working cultures, I am excited to see what new developments 2016 holds for our industry. I welcome the challenges and opportunities we have before us in 2016. Join us as we continue on our journey!

industry news #OutsourcingMustFall campaign continues

T

he University of Pretoria (UP) closed for registration during January following violent protests by outsourced workers. Thousands of people marched to the Union Buildings as the #OutsourcingMustFall campaign mobilised. In a statement, UP spokesperson Anna-Retha Bouwer said that efforts to resolve disputes with outsourced workers could not be reached at the time. “Since access to the entrances to the university is being impeded by protest action, and threats of intimidation

and violence continue, the university remained closed. According to Bouwer, protesting workers have demanded immediate insourcing of all contract workers and a minimum salary of R10 000 per month. According to the Workers and Socialist Party (WASP), cleaners at universities and colleges earn as little as R2 000 per month. “The university tabled a proposed phased approach to the insourcing of services linked to the expiry of existing contracts and has agreed to a top-up of existing salaries. This is in line with similar

agreements at several other universities such as Wits University and University of Johannesburg. Regrettably, this was rejected by the worker representatives and student representatives,” Bouwer said. Bouwer further said that UP remained committed to continue with a commission on insourcing, and a further meeting of the commission had been scheduled. Outsourced workers vowed to shutdown all Pretoria universities and colleges, as well as the Tshwane municipality, in protest against outsourcing.

oscor Cleaning Equipment’s heavyduty mechanical sweeper assisted in increased safety for all cyclists participating in the 2015 Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge by cleaning up the route. Jonathan Kirsch, sales manager at Goscor Cleaning Equipment, explained that they put their most advanced mechanical road sweeper, the MACRO M60, through its paces to sweep up debris such as glass, wood, stones and other potentially hazardous objects along the cycle route prior to the race. “The removal of loose sand and stones from the road surface not only helped to reduce the number of punctures, but also ensured safer cornering for the riders.” According to Kirsch, a number of excellent features make the sweeper the perfect solution for reliable, cost-effective and seamless urban road sweeping. The 6m3 hopper volume and 6 000kg net payload allow the sweeper to work fast and efficiently for extended shifts,

even under the harshest of urban road conditions, while the unit’s large surface filters ensure dust-free operation. The four-wheel steering delivers excellent manoeuvrability, and Kirsch adds that the machine’s excellent sweeping system allows for effortless sweeping in unbalanced conditions such as over speed bumps. He also points out that the machine’s ‘load sensing’ hydraulic system reduces both fuel consumption

and service costs. The well-equipped and spacious cabin provides premium operator comfort. The cycling challenge organisers rented the M60 workhorse from Goscor Cleaning Equipment over a three-day period to make sure that the entire route is cycle ready. “We are extremely proud to have been a part of Jo’burg’s biggest cycling event,” concluded Kirsch.

industry news Campaign for hygiene bins in mens toilets

V

ectair Systems, a leading technological innovator, manufacturer and supplier of hygiene products in a number of sectors worldwide, is taking the lead in encouraging establishments to provide hygiene waste bins in men’s toilets by spreading the word about the issues associated with urinary incontinence. The company is taking inspiration from a recent initiative in Germany, led by the Federal Association of Prostate Self-Help (BPS) in association with the German Hotel & Restaurant Association (DEHOGA). According to a study, more than five million men in Germany (12% of the male population) suffer from urinary incontinence, especially after prostate surgery. However, less than two million of those dealing with the condition seek medical treatment.

Urinary incontinence is a common and distressing problem which can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life. Men with urinary incontinence may have to wear special inlays that have to be changed frequently. However, many men’s washrooms currently lack a discrete, safe and hygienic way to dispose of these. BPS in Germany recognised this, and has proactively launched an initiative to promote the supply of hygiene bins in men’s toilets called the ‘Initiative für Hygienebehälter in Herrentoiletten’. It aims to help men suffering from urinary incontinence to enjoy an active social life without barriers. Legislation was also passed in Germany in 2013, which instructed establishments to install at least one

hygiene bin (incorporating a lid) in each men’s washroom so that men can easily dispose of their hygiene waste. According to the UK’s NHS, it is estimated that between three and six million people in the UK may have some degree of urinary incontinence, and many of these will be men. However, it is uncommon to see sanitary waste bins in men’s toilets around the UK. We hope that, through spreading the word about men’s washroom needs, we can encourage public places like hotels, restaurants and offices to provide a suitable and discreet solution for men’s sanitary waste,” said Paul Wonnacott, MD, Vectair Systems. Vectair has produced a ‘useful information’ document about urinary incontinence, which can be found on its website: www.vectairsystems.com

Dow Chemical and DuPont merge to create industrial giant

D

uring December 2015, two of the oldest names in US industry, Dow Chemical and DuPont, announced that they will merge to create the world’s biggest chemical and materials company. But the all-stock deal, creating a business valued at $130bn, would hold only until the new DowDuPont splits into three separate, listed companies with sharper industrial focuses: agriculture, material sciences and specialty products.

Dow and DuPont said that the combined company will generate huge savings and strengthen their competitive positions in a world economy beset with overcapacity and low commodity prices. Until the three-way split, planned for 18-24 months after the merger is completed, it will put DowDuPont ahead of BASF, Germany’s global chemicals powerhouse. The two companies are mature

blue-chip stars of the US industry. DuPont was founded in 1802, and became the foundation for one of the country’s greatest family fortunes. Dow is a relative youngster, launched only in 1897. Dow Chemical, known for its Styrofoam brand insulation products, is strongest in the plastics and industrial materials industries. DuPont, creator of Kevlar, used in body armour, is strongest in agriculture and biosciences.

Cameroon start-up offers clean streets, cleaner fuel

T

he streets and marketplaces of Cameroon’s economic capital Douala are strewn with fruit and vegetable debris of all sorts: banana peels, corncobs, coffee grounds and mashed sugarcane. But one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure, and the unsightly rubbish has become the raw material for Kemit Ecology, a start-up that has developed a process for transforming the waste into fuel.

8

African Cleaning Review January/February 2016

The company, launched in July 2014, sweeps the scraps off the streets and uses them to produce ‘organic charcoal’ briquettes for cooking. “It’s an ecological solution. Collecting the rubbish cleans up the streets even before it is turned into fuel,” said Muller Tenkeu Nandou, the start-up’s manager. “From the environmental

standpoint, organic charcoal emits very little greenhouse gas and practically no smoke,” stated Nandou, who earned a master’s in ecology, biodiversity and environment from the University of Douala in 2013 and now researches renewable energy there. Hygiene awareness boosts demand for hand dryers A new study, titled Global Electric Hand Dryer Market 2016-2020, conducted by industry market research firm Infiniti Research Limited attributes the rise in demand for hand dryers to an increased worldwide awareness about washroom hygiene. Additionally, the report forecasted that the largest growth will be seen in the European Union, driven by the large number of hotels and restaurants in the region.

T

10

he demand for eco-friendly appliances and increased awareness about washroom hygiene has led to the high adoption of electric hand dryers, which resulted in a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 12% for this market during the forecast period of 2016-2020. Hand dryers are widely used in the hospitality industry; therefore, their growth in the hospitality sector is expected to contribute considerably to the growth of the electric hand dryer market. Customisation of products is another fast-moving trend that is driving the growth of the electric hand dryers market. Manufacturers in the hand dryers market are offering customisation to cater to the needs of the users. For instance, World Dryer introduced its SMARTdri Plus energy-efficient and high-speed hand dryer into the market. Such innovations are likely to uplift the electric hand dryers market during the forecast period.

The competition in the present market scenario is fierce,

Segmentation and analysis by product of the electric hand dryer market

Competitive landscape and key vendors

• Hot hand dryer • Jet hand dryer With an enormous share of more than 63%, the hot hand dryer segment dominated the electric hand dryer market and is likely to maintain its number one position during the forecast period. The demand for these dryers is much higher compared to jet hand dryers because they are less expensive. Restaurants, hotels, offices, hospitals, malls and airports in APAC and ROW use hot hand dryers.

Manufacturers in the electric hand dryers market are continuously trying to address the challenges faced and launched several innovate products to cater to the needs of the users. The competition in the present market scenario is fierce, hence continuous product innovation by vendors is the key factor to withstand the competition and enhance their market share. Some vendors are focusing on producing electric hand dryers that are both userfriendly and eco-friendly.

hence continuous product innovation by vendors is the key factor to withstand the competition and enhance their market share. Geographical segmentation and analysis of the electric hand dryer market • Asia and Pacific (APAC) • Europe • North America • Rest of World (ROW) Europe accounted for nearly 50% of the market share in 2015, wherein the German market contributes the largest share in this region, followed by France – Italy and the UK are also among the top markets in this region. The EU has the largest number of hotels and restaurants, which is the main factor driving the growth of the electric hand dryer market in this region.

The leading electric hand dryer vendors are: • American Dryer • Dyson • Excel Dryer • Mitsubishi Electric • World Dryer Other prominent vendors in the market include Askon Engineers, Bio JetDrier, Hokwang Industries, Taishan Jieda Electrical Industrial, Panasonic, Palmer Fixture, and Warner Howard UK. As part of this hand dryer feature, African Cleaning Review took a closer look at the latest high-speed hand dryers available to the local market and highlights the most relevant features, advantages and technical specifications. The hand dryers featured here are available from the following leading distributors in South Africa:

Initial Hygiene Services Initial is the leading hygiene solutions brand that delivers efficient, professional hygiene services to businesses of all kinds. The company’s comprehensive range of advanced kitchen, office and washroom hygiene services, products and environmentally-friendly solutions meet the needs of every organisation.

Dyson Airblade™ V The Dyson Airblade™ V high-speed hand dryer is suitable for smaller washrooms or tighter spaces. It features a slim profile that protrudes only 10cm from the wall. It is most effective at hand drying with sheets of air travelling at 688km per hour, scraping water from hands like a windscreen wiper. The HEPA filter traps 99.95% of particles from the air that passes through the filter. This ensures that users are drying their hands with clean air. Filters that don’t meet these stringent standards are potentially less effective at removing bacteria from the air. A proximity capacitive sensor offers touch-free operation. It is also said to dry 17 pairs of hands for the price of a single

paper towel. Dyson Airblade™ hand dryers produce up to 72% less CO2 than some other hand dryers and up to 68% less than paper towels. Don’t let the size mislead you, this hand dryer is 60% smaller than the original Dyson Airblade™, yet it offers the same drying performance: drying hands in 10 seconds. educational aqueous ozone

New studies reveal cleaning benefits of aqueous ozone During the fourth quarter of 2015, the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) released two studies titled Qualification of Surface Disinfection using Aqueous Ozone Generated by CleanCore Technologies Ozone Systems.

Ozone, which is found naturally in the atmosphere, can be mechanically created through the interaction of electricity and oxygen.

C

leanCore™ is an innovative cleaning technology that infuses cold water with ozone gas to create aqueous ozone, a natural and robust cleaning solution. Along with being effective, ozonated water is viewed as a more ‘natural’ cleaning agent because ozone is naturally found in the atmosphere. This form of no-chemical cleaning is often referred to as one step beyond green cleaning because there is essentially no impact on the environment when cleaning with a CleanCore system. These studies indicate aqueous ozone cleaning systems can prove very effective at eliminating colony-forming

units (CFUs) of both E. coli and Listeria from hard surfaces. These bacteria can produce food poisoning-type symptoms that can be very harmful, even resulting in death. Ozone, which is found naturally in the atmosphere, can be mechanically created through the interaction of electricity and oxygen. It is then infused into water to create aqueous ozone that can be poured into a sprayer or dispensed directly by an aqueous ozone system. According to Vince Elliott, author of the book Extreme Cleaning, aqueous ozone “is one of the most effective disinfectants available. In tests measuring pure disinfection qualities, it has proven to be as much as 10 times more effective at sterilising surfaces compared to common household bleach.” The aqueous ozone system used by UNMC was developed by CleanCore™ Technologies, which is based in the United States. The researchers applied the test bacteria to both stainless steel and ceramic surfaces. For control purposes, the surfaces were cleaned using sterile water and peracetic acid in addition to the aqueous ozone. Peracetic acid (PAA) is a powerful, hospital-grade disinfectant.

According to Matt Montag, distribution sales manager for CleanCore, it was important to compare the aqueous ozone results to the results using water (negative control) and PAA (positive control) in order to understand the efficacy of the aqueous ozone solution*. In these tests, it was clearly shown that aqueous ozone significantly outperformed water and, in many instances, performed equally to PAA. The reports concluded that “there was a statistically significant decrease in E. coli and Listeria CFUs found on the coupons post treatment, both in total and compared to the negative control”. The reports also concluded that “in several instances, there was no significant difference in reduction of E. coli and Listeria between the aqueous ozone solution and the positive control PAA”. While Montag says that aqueous ozone systems are not registered with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as disinfectants, and should not be used in place of an EPA-registered disinfectant, “these tests, and others like it, indicate just how effective these cleaning systems are.” For more information visit: www.cleancoretech.com

* In a scientific experiment, comparisons are often made using ‘negative control’ and ‘positive control’ components. Negative control is when no response is expected (such as when using tap water) and positive control is when a known response is expected (such as using peracetic acid).

educational antibiotic research

Antibiotic research decline points to increased emphasis on effective cleaning “Our industry is being called upon to step in and help stop the spread of disease at a time when the pharmaceuticals are stepping out.”

Stephen Ashkin

I

t’s possible that many people in the professional cleaning industry are unaware of a major redirection in the pharmaceutical industry. Whereas pharmaceutical companies spent billions of dollars and put decades of research into the development of new antibiotics after World War II, one by one, the major firms are backing away from this expensive and timeconsuming research*. With all the discussion of methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), hospital-acquired illnesses

and other infectious diseases which cleaning professionals have become all too familiar with, this may come as a surprise. However, pharmaceutical companies are taking these steps for several reasons: • The high costs, and high chance, of failure in antibiotic research and development • The length of time it takes to develop new drugs – it usually takes up to a decade or longer • The slow approval process once a new antibiotic has been developed • Low return on the investment “The market for a new antibiotic is surprisingly very small, the rewards are not there and, therefore, the [investment] capital is not flowing,” says Paul Stoffels, chief scientific officer at Johnson & Johnson. “In cancer, people pay $30 000 to $80 000 per patient for a drug, but it is likely to be only a few hundred dollars for an antibiotic.” According to Stephen Ashkin, long known as the ‘father of Green Cleaning’, this is happening at a time when the socalled superbugs, which are becoming

increasingly resistant to antibiotics, are spreading – for instance, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that there are approximately 80 000 infections and 11 285 deaths each year from MRSA alone. “This redirection means more emphasis will be placed on preventing illness, and that’s where effective and environmentally responsible cleaning comes in,” says Ashkin. “In other words, our industry is being called upon to step in and help stop the spread of disease at a time when the pharmaceuticals are stepping out. Increased investment in training, equipment and health-protecting cleaning methods is already helping us accomplish this.” Stephen P. Ashkin is president of The Ashkin Group, a consulting firm specialising in greening the cleaning industry, and CEO of Sustainability Dashboard Tools, which offers a cloud-based dashboard that allows organisations to measure, report and improve their sustainability efforts. He is also co-author of both The Business of Green Cleaning and Green Cleaning for Dummies. For more information visit: www.ashkingroup.com

* The major US pharmaceutical companies that have walked away from antibiotic research (as of this writing) include Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Roche, and Bristol-Myers Squibb; basic research continues at GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca, and Merck & Co.

educational floorcare

Flawless floors with diamond polishing With the growing demand for polished concrete flooring in domestic and commercial industries, it has become increasingly important for polishing experts to deliver exceptional results every time. Johannesburgbased construction firm, URE Projects relies on the high-quality tools provided by Diamond Products to achieve flawless shine and smoothness.

U

RE Projects recently finished a high-level project, where it was contracted to polish 10 400m2 of flooring for two warehouses using diamond segmented metal bond grinding shoes, sealer and a densifier from Diamond Products. The project was undertaken by a team of 16 people, who worked day and night shifts for a total of 40 days during 2015. URE Projects director Kuben Naidoo explains that the company’s core focus is polishing, maintenance, sealing and restoration of concrete floors, which is a sustainable flooring alternative that does not require wax or coating. “We mostly do commercial flooring where the surface is likely to experience wear and tear from heavy traffic. Proper sealing of the floor every few years and regular mopping can guarantee a 10-year lifespan.” Concrete flooring is an intricate

process comprising multiple stages. This includes cutting, grinding, grouting and burnishing the sealer to give the floor a glossy finish. There is a wide variety of design options to choose from, such as decorative engravings, graphics or dye with the available sheen levels. Naidoo notes that concrete grinding and polishing presents its own set of challenges, such as holes in the floor, undesirable floor angles and the unsatisfactory strength of concrete. “The installer therefore relies heavily on the performance of their tools. Usage of inferior products for this process will quickly show in the results. The floor will not have the desired shine, and the strength of the floor will be compromised, which might result in cracking,” he explains. According to Naidoo, URE Projects started using Diamond Products a year ago after finding its service impressive. “We decided on Diamond

Products due to its impressive products and after-sales service. They are always available to give advice any time of the day and are ready to assist us.” Diamond Products manufactures highly-quality, specialised diamond tools used in industrial applications. The tools are designed for, among other things, cutting, sawing, grinding, polishing and drilling. Naidoo adds that URE Projects has equipped itself with the right tools to specialise in polished concrete, and he foresees a prosperous future in the industry. “We are optimistic about the future of polished concrete as it is a product that sells itself and is becoming increasingly popular in the country. Industry is aware of its advantages, especially from a price and durability point of view,” concludes Naidoo. For more information visit: www.diamondpc.co.za

feature cleaning equipment

Cleaning equipment rental Many companies across a number of different industries resort to renting equipment in order to operate more effectively and to meet the growing demands within their own organisations. The professional cleaning industry is no different, and there will be times when the need will arise for cleaning professionals to obtain floor care equipment at the drop of a hat. This is where the rental option is the ideal solution, as it keeps operations ticking along without any interruptions.

T

he rental option is especially valid for start-up cleaning companies who may need equipment for short-term solutions without having to lay out the capital to purchase cleaning equipment. The option that most companies decide on will normally depend on two factors: the amount of capital available at the time and the frequency with which cleaning equipment is required in a company’s day-to-day operations. If purchasing equipment is the preferred option for your company but the capital is not available, then it might be worth considering approaching the bank for a business loan. The reality is that the company will be able to purchase less equipment but will probably save money in the long term, provided that it does not impact the company’s ability to perform according to the client’s needs and specific requirements. The rental option also ensures that your company will have access to the latest technology at an affordable rate. Not only that, but renting also provides the opportunity to access more equipment for the same amount that it would cost to purchase only a few machines. Another benefit of rental is that you have quick access to reliable and serviced equipment. When you own the equipment, the responsibility is on your company to ensure that the equipment is maintained and serviced at all times – this will cost the company time, money and the resources to do so. In addition, when you rent cleaning equipment, your company will not

20

African Cleaning Review January/February 2016

have to get involved with making arrangements for transport to and from sites as the rental company will ensure that it reaches the facility in good time. These are only a few of the reasons why companies in many different industries still choose to rent the equipment which they utilise in daily operations. So where do you find a reliable service provider with an extensive selection of quality equipment and a national footprint? African Cleaning Review spoke to one of South Africa’s leading cleaning equipment rental companies for a broader perspective on the issue of renting professional cleaning equipment: Goscor Cleaning Equipment, previously known as Tennant SA, boasts 32 years’ experience in the cleaning industry and focuses on providing complete, superior quality sales and rental of industrial cleaning equipment and solutions to mines and many other industries across the Southern African and Southern African Development Community (SADC) markets. The company stocks one of the largest ranges of cleaning equipment and consumables including commercial and industrial vacuums, single disc machines, scrubbers, sweeper scrubbers, beach cleaners, highpressure cleaners, vacuum trucks, road sweepers and escalator cleaners. Highly competitive rental packages, that are flexible daily, weekly and monthly, are available from the cleaning specialist’s Rental Division. These packages ensure optimum customer

convenience across diverse cleaning applications and market sectors (such as mining, construction, power generation and, of course, contract cleaning) throughout Southern Africa. General manager of Goscor Cleaning Equipment, Gregory Venter points out that equipment rental presents a highly affordable option, “even more so in a tough economy when stringent budget cuts are the norm rather than the exception. Cleaning equipment rental makes sound business and financial sense for contract cleaners and for companies that do not have the funds for large capital expenditure, as well as for organisations where cleaning is not their core business.” Customers can select from Goscor Cleaning Equipment’s comprehensive monthly, weekly or even daily rental packages, which include machine service and maintenance. “We have established strong and solid relationships with contract cleaning companies who are able to conveniently rent machines to suit their facility contract commitments, returning the equipment at the conclusion of the respective contract periods,” says Venter. “After assessing our customer’s respective cleaning requirements, our highly trained personnel, who understand the customer’s needs and expectations, will recommend the best rental machine for the job,” he states. Venter adds that in the event of a breakdown, the machine will be repaired by one of the company’s qualified technicians; alternatively the unit will be replaced to ensure

feature cleaning equipment

minimum customer downtime. In addition, customers have the option of using one of Goscor Cleaning Equipment’s experienced machine operators. This avoids having to train an employee which not only has cost implications, but also removes the employee from his or her daily job responsibilities. Goscor Cleaning Equipment is part

of the Goscor Group of Companies and represents world leading brands including Tennant, Ghibli, Delfin, Maer, Green Machine, Elgin, and vacuum trucks that have earned their reputation in the marketplace for quality, reliability and performance. The company has offices in Johannesburg, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, with reputable

agents in Polokwane, Nelspruit, Richards Bay, East London and Bloemfontein. The company’s excellent stockholding of equipment, parts and spares means that Goscor Cleaning Equipment customers are ensured of minimum downtime. First 5-star green rated building for Durban region The new R157 million green office development by Growthpoint Properties in Umhlanga’s Ridgeside precinct is nearing completion and has become Durban’s first 5-Star Green Star SA rated building.

C

onstruction on the P-Grade (premium) 6 680m² building, with views of the Indian Ocean, began in June 2014 and was completed by December 2015. Originally targeting a 4-Star Green Star SA office building rating, Growthpoint has been notified by the Green Building Council SA that the development had in fact secured a 5-Star Green Star SA – Office v1 Design Rating. “This is a great achievement and will serve as a green building beacon in greater Durban and KwaZulu-Natal,” said Greg de Klerk, KZN regional head of Growthpoint Properties. Rudolf Pienaar, Growthpoint Properties’ office division director, said that the company’s Lincoln on the Lake and Mayfair on the Lake office buildings in the Parkside precinct of Umhlanga New Town Centre were pioneering green building developments in the Growthpoint portfolio. “We have come a long way and now have 23 Green Star SA rated buildings in our portfolio countrywide and several more under development, which have been submitted or will be submitted to the GBCSA for Green Star certification,” said Pienaar. “The Lincoln on the Lake office development secured the first 4-Star Green Star SA As-Built rating for a multi-tenanted office building in South Africa back in 2012.” De Klerk added that when it comes to thriving office nodes in Durban, there’s a continued move by business north into Umhlanga Ridgeside, Umhlanga New Town Centre and La Lucia Ridge. These nodes are experiencing the highest levels of office development in Durban.

22

African Cleaning Review January/February 2016

Around 50 000m² of office space will come to market over the next year in these nodes, of which about a third is being developed by Growthpoint. In addition to its Lincoln on the Lake and Mayfair on the Lake office buildings, Growthpoint is investing R117.3 million in another 5 500m² new green office development, named The Boulevard, in the Parkside precinct of Umhlanga – this is due to be completed in April 2016. Upon completion, The Boulevard will make

up a city block of green buildings in Umhlanga New Town Centre, providing A-Grade office space of 20 000m². In line with its green building focus, Growthpoint’s Bayside Mall in Tableview, Cape Town, has just scooped the 2015 Energy Efficiency Forum Award for the Large Building Retrofit Category, raising the bar for energy efficiency at shopping centres in the Mother City and across the country.

Facilities excellence award for Broll

B

roll Facilities Management (FM) received Gold for Facilities Excellence in the 2015 PMR Golden Arrow Award. Broll FM won a Bronze Award in 2014 and it also won the Gold Award in 2013. “We are honoured to receive this award and we would like to sincerely thank the PMR Africa Awards, the South African Facilities Management Association (SAFMA), our clients, industry peers and nominees in the competition,” says Rowland Gurnell, COO of Facilities Management at Broll. Broll FM is dedicated to the coordination of and functionality of space thus letting clients focus on their core business. The success of Broll FM is the dedicated team that sees to all the clients’ needs, and according to Gurnell,

the success would not be possible without this team. FM continues to be a sought-after specialist service across the continent as it allows property owners to focus on what they do best, and leaves the management of non-core support and associated services to the property specialists, he explains. Broll FM, a division of Broll Property Group, one of Africa’s leading property services firm, manages some 12 million square metres of properties within the Group. The purpose of the PMR Africa Awards is to enhance excellence and set a benchmark in the industry, and the awards are indicators of a company or division’s competencies. The awards are the culmination of a research process

whereby companies and institutions are rated based on respondents’ perceptions. There is a strong focus on evaluating and measuring customer service and customer satisfaction. Gurnell points out that the survey asked respondents questions such as how well Broll communicated with clients, the quality of service received, staff competence and credibility among other questions. “For Broll FM to tick favourably on all boxes as per the survey, shows our clients have confidence in our service offering and ability to over deliver on what we promise. This award will encourage our teams to continue to exceed customer service, while keeping abreast of FM trends locally and globally,” he says.

New chair appointment at GBCSA

Seana Nkhahle

D

uring January, The Green Building Council of SA (GBCSA) announced the appointment of Seana Nkhahle as the chairperson of the organisation. The GBCSA, a member of the World Green Building Council, was established in 2007 to promote green building development in South Africa. The organisation’s CEO Brian Wilkinson

24

African Cleaning Review January/February 2016

said: “We are happy to welcome Seana on board as the council’s new chairperson. He brings with him extensive experience in terms of sustainability knowledge in his academic work as well as the work he has done in consulting and in local government.” Nkhahle holds a BSc (Hons) Town and Regional Planning from Wits University. He was an executive director at the SA Local Government Association, where he was responsible for corporate strategy and research. Prior to this, he was the executive manager and national programmes co-ordinator at the South African Cities Network from 2005 to 2009. In both these roles, he facilitated partnerships and support to selected municipalities in order to improve

sustainability in their operations, with particular emphasis on energy, water and land use management. Nkhahle said that he was looking forward to the opportunity of heading the board of the GBCSA and playing a meaningful role in transforming the building industry towards a greener future. “I want to draw on my experience in sustainable urban development and local government in taking the GBCSA into the next phase of its journey,” he said. “The council is at an important chapter, where green building is gradually gaining momentum. People, private companies and government are realising that managing climate change is becoming increasingly important and that green building is a crucial element to this effect.”

Training changes lives and empowers staff For the past three years, Wasteman Holdings Western Cape, member of Averda Group of companies, has run extensive training programmes for some of its employees in order to support them in their career progression. These programmes include courses on how to read, write, do calculations and acquire a minimal business and educational knowledge. Speaking at the third annual graduation ceremony of employees who completed year-long National Certificates in Business Administration Learnership (BAL) and Adult Basic Education and Training (ABET) courses, Francois De Clercq, Western Cape region general manager, said: “Many of our employees selected for these programmes come from disadvantaged backgrounds and enjoyed the opportunity to learn, read and write. I truly believe this educational and training process empowers my staff and we shall continue to invest in this initiative in the future.”

The 22 employees selected for these programmes come from areas like Khayelitsha, Delft, Philippi, Crossroads and Guguletu. Their ages range between 23-50 years. Twelve employees successfully completed the ABET courses and 10 graduated from the BAL courses. The ABET graduates could not read or write before they joined Wasteman. Now they are fully literate and have acquired, through the various training programmes provided, a minimal business and educational knowledge to support them in their further career progression. “A lot of sacrifices were made by these graduates to ensure that they attended the courses uninterruptedly, with immense benefits for them and their families,” De Clercq said. “We can see the impact it has on staff, both on a personal and professional level.” One of the graduates of the BAL course, Cheryldene Damons said: “Joining Wasteman is the best

decision I have ever made – I cannot believe how much this year of study has changed me, as a person, and also changed my future prospects. Now I can share all I know with my children and make sure that, if they are not offered an incredible opportunity like I have, at least I can teach them how to read, write and make calculations. My life has been forever changed and I cannot express my gratitude enough to Wasteman for making this dream come true.”

The Microweb filter is of huge benefit to industrial users: its unique homopolymer construction uses a revolutionary acrylic fibre, and its microporous membrane, which is applied to the collection surface, provides a kind of ‘Teflon’ finish – this provides a low-pressure drop and causes the dust to ‘cake’. The caking facilitates better dust release, improves collection efficiency and results in massive time savings over the life of the machine.

“The caking system releases the dust with a shake of the filter. No scrubbing or beating is required,” said Aussie Pumps’ Bruce Hulm. The Microweb is essential for vacuuming dust from limestone, bio chemical, lead, sugar, cement, precious metals, pigments and fertilisers. The new Aussie Clean Air machines are robust with rugged polypropylene barrels that are impact resistant. The vacuums are available with barrel sizes of up to 75l capacity and up to three powerful 1 200 watt motors – this provides real capacity with the big machines, pulling 181l/sec airflow and a water lift of 2 600mm. The Aussie Clean Air vacuums come with a unique five-year warranty against faulty material or workmanship. For more information visit: aussiepumps.com.au

It is reported to clean windows up to 25 percent faster and uses up to 39 percent less chemicals than traditional methods. Research has shown that cleaning professionals face two key challenges when cleaning indoor windows: efficiency and safety. Unfortunately, current tools lead to time-consuming issues, such as rearranging furniture prior to cleaning and reaching high or unusually positioned windows. Present solutions to these issues also lead to time being wasted, not to mention the risks associated with the use of ladders. Inspired by the power and glide of its namesake, the Unger Stingray utilises several patent-pending features to overcome the challenges associated with indoor window cleaning, delivering outstanding cleaning results. These patent-pending features include its modular pole system (this allows the
