What are the roles of women? What are the roles of men? That’s the topic we explored recently during our gender equality sessions and the stereotypes were in full swing. It’s time for volunteers to help us challenge those traditions

Self-defense lessons were delivered to over 80 children, youth and adults. Our community partners learned how to get themselves out of unsafe situations and keep themselves away from harm

Our Girl Impact focal project has expanded – stay tuned for how you can help raise funds for Art Therapy Training and a mobile library

• The children and grannies from our local afterschool center were taken to Higgledy Piggledy Farm and Milkwood Maze for a day of outdoor fun. Our assessments show they learnt something too – an average of 40.5% increase in knowledge • Children at the emergency foster care center not only showed an average increase of 3.8 milestones (0-3yo) and 2.08 milestones (+4yo), but they also ventured out to a local stadium for some outdoor fun • Hardworking teens that we’ve been helping to complete their President’s Award hours with were rewarded with indoor rock climbing during a fun day arranged by our Foundation • School readiness assessments at our partner preschool showed 93% of children could identify at least 5 letters, 100% could identify at least 5 numbers, 100% could identify at least 3 shapes and 93% could identify at least 5 colours

With more volunteers on our Social Impact Project this quarter we were able to measure the BMI of the children in both preschools we work at. Across the schools, 90% of children are at, or above, optimal weight which is fantastic to see

A workshop on vitamins and minerals was presented to local teachers to ensure the nutrition level of the children’s lunches is maintained

Our volunteers had six homestay nights between them and stayed with three different families – not only learning more about their culture but sharing some of their own – cooking Mexican food for her family, volunteer Marianna excelled at this!

“I have really had the best time here in Cape Town. The staff and volunteers have all been amazing and you feel like a family after just a small time. The projects have really been fantastic and it’s great to see how happy the kids are. You can really see you are making an impact.” – Tanya Lylloff, Sports Development

100 children from four schools competed in our first Interschool Competition for 2018. Thank you to our volunteers for your efforts with coaching, refereeing and of course donating to our Foundation to make these events possible

Our sports program has also expanded to include rugby coaching sessions. In the afterschool hours we assist coaches with drills and fitness training to ensure the children are ready for weekend games – no prior rugby knowledge necessary

We assessed 440 children in two schools with an average performance increase of 10.8% and further supported a third school in assessing another 100 children for their own reports

“I loved experiencing Bo Kaap with the amazing friendships I have built here!” -

Clarissa, Switzerland

Bo Kaap is the “Muslim Quarter” in Cape Town and is renowned for its colorful buildings and incredible Cape Malay food. Join our Peninsula tour for Insta-worthy pics like Clarissa’s!

“I have loved spending time with all of the children, but in particular working with one of the young babies who hasn’t developed use of the right side of her body. Every time I went to the foster care home I would spend ten minutes working with her on standing exercises and eventually she was able to stand on her own while holding onto a table. It was amazing to see the progress she had made in such a short time and to know that I had been able to help her with her development.”
