Boy Talk is continuing at our partner aftercare center, giving boys in Grades 4 – 7 the chance to talk to male role models – they’ve even created a secret ‘boys only’ handshake!

Participants at Quirky 30 youth support group have been focusing on their future recently, creating vision boards to help direct their decision-making.

Our new Pregnancy Support Program has been established! This program welcomes volunteers into clinics throughout the township of Khayelitsha to talk all things pregnancy and motherhood with waiting patients.

During quarter 1 we welcomed our first two Social Work and Youth Development interns! These interns, in addition to working with a social worker, assisted volunteers to ensure the development of children in emergency foster care was on track.

And on track it is! We assessed 11 children aged 0-3 years old and 7 children aged 4 years and above. This creates a great baseline for all the long term residents at the center.

To top it all off, school readiness assessments at our partner preschools indicate that 76% of children could identify 5 numbers from 1-10, 83% could identify 3 colors and 83% could identify 5 colors. Let’s get this to 100% by the end of the year!

We welcomed our first Social Impact Experience volunteer this quarter. Tove, from Norway, had the opportunity to spend two weeks on this program and jumped straight into it; taking part in homestays, school readiness assessments and an incredible “Sweat with Sophia” evening exercise class!

Baseline assessments were kicked off at Red Hill Preschool with 50% of children being able to identify 5 numbers between 1-10, 58% able to identify 3 shapes and 50% identifying 5 colors. Definitely room for improvement for future volunteers to contribute to.

“Volunteering with African Impact is definitely something I would highly recommend. The people you meet are so inspirational and caring as well. I have made so many friendships with people all over the world. … As soon as you arrive at the projects kids come running to hug you! It's something I will never forget and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had.” – Nadine Nour, Orphan & Vulnerable Care

This quarter 544 children across three primary schools were assessed on their ability to complete sit ups, catch, sprint and balance. This makes up our baseline assessments so we can track the students’ improvement throughout the year.

Our lucky sports volunteers were able to attend the opening of a new sports field at our partner preschool Constantia Primary. Students now have the chance to play on artificial turf making PE all the more fun!

Sports Day has been declared in Khayelitsha! Every Wednesday students, teachers and even the principal come dressed in their sports gear for a day of active fun with our volunteers.

“Think about the scariest, most exhilarating and most fun things you’ve ever done happening all at the same time… that’s kloofing. My only advice to you is don’t look down. Just do it! Like we say here, TIA! Take a chance and do something crazy, you won’t regret it.” -

Kate, USA

“To be able to go to the communities of Cape Town - South Africa, witness the culture, struggles up close and all the warm and welcoming people is hard to explain. You have to witness it yourself to understand the incredible experience it is. My first homestay was def my biggest highlight.” -

Tove, Norway
