WHAT’S NEW ON THE GROUND? • • •
Our gender equality program has branched out and now teaches to both boys and girls! We started a new afternoon project, Health Club! Health Club teaches children about health and the human body in a fun and engaging way! As a reward for high attendance in Maths Club, we have been holding weekly volleyball and football sessions with the children!
•
Medical volunteers have started extended their home-based care services to nearby Linda Farm, a community for people living with disabilities. They’ve seen 40 new patients, including some of the preschool children.
•
One of these patients at Linda Farm was a boy named Enock. Enock, when initially seen by volunteers, had a large wound on his right underarm. After having dressed his wound 5 times, it completely healed without any further issues – he now has a nice scar too!
•
At the local medical clinic, volunteers assisted in weighing over 1000 babies!
•
We now provide home based care to around 400 people and impact an additional 1840 people in local clinics!
• Reading Club students at Linda Community School have improved greatly throughout Quarter 2 and are on track to be reading at grade level in the coming months! We are proud to announce that our students’ reading scores improved by an average of 42% this term, with some scores improving by up to 96%! • Maths Club has been a HUGE success recently. Having now completed a pre-test (beginning of term 1) and a mid-test (beginning of term 2), we can boast the following statistics: ▪ Linda Grade 6 boys’ average percentage score up from 25% to 39% and Linda Grade 6 girls’ average percentage score up from 26% to 35%. ▪ Mwandi Grade 6 average percentage score up from 29% to 44%. ▪ Unmistakable positive correlation between sessions attended and percentage improvement for individual students! • We’ve had 11 volunteers on our teaching project this quarter! Each one put so much time and effort into our projects and we are SO grateful! By the end of the quarter we had 675 volunteer hours logged from our morning lessons alone! Whoa! • Novic, one of our star pupils from Adult Literacy Club, has completed the course and is now teaching the beginners group! We are so proud of him for his hard work and for passing his knowledge onto others. This bodes very well for the sustainability of the project! • We completed our SECOND Holiday Club of the year, allowing children in Linda to continue learning throughout the Easter Holiday!
•
In June, we began work on a NEW PROJECT at Mwandi Community School - Health Club! This project works from the Integrated Science School Curriculum to teach students about health and the human body through interactive activities!
•
On a similar note – our sports project itself has moved in a more academic direction! Each session this quarter has hit a balance between all the great benefits we were achieving previously through physical exercise, PLUS working out of the Integrated Science Curriculum. This ensures our students get an academic boost and are informed the exercise they are physically doing! The kids have really enjoyed this and love turning up to P.E sessions knowing that they’ll be learning!
•
We had 16 volunteers on the sports project this quarter! Each brought their own unique skills and interests to the table to provide lessons in everything from baseball to salsa dancing!
•
Our ‘Build-It Project’ was named GoAbroad.com’s Innovative New Program 2017 for it’s amazing use of ‘ecobricks’; plastic bottles stuffed with litter that can be used as a costeffective building material!
•
Our swap shops in local communities have been very successful, and we have collected hundreds of ecobricks in this quarter. This rewards the local community for collecting litter and means we can provide them with self-sustaining community buildings!
•
With these ecobricks, we have been building a chicken coup in a local community (Linda Farm), which has now been finished! A big well done to everyone who contributed to this!
•
We’ve also been working on a couple of different projects in the Dambwa community! Firstly, a set of benches (which sits in front of a black board wall) that will offer extra space for a class to learn! Secondly, we’ve been painting a pre-school classroom!
•
We began working with 2 new schools, the Dambwa Christian Trust School and St. Mary’s Secondary School. Already, we have held sessions regarding puberty, menstruation, self-confidence, and goal setting with these amazing groups of girls!
•
We distributed reusable menstruation kits to women and girls around Livingstone to help them go to work and school during their periods.
•
We have begun working with the grade 5 boys at Linda Community School teaching lessons on healthy friendships, gender equality, and more, while our Grade 4 girls have been working hard in the Girl Impact vegetable garden. By taking lessons on agriculture, they can use that skill to make a living later in life!
•
Volunteers began leading weekly sewing and fashion design workshops for students at a local tourism college!
• Volunteer Barbara, from Austria, taught the Linda girls a two part session in safety, ending in a self-defense lesson!
“While I was in Livingstone, I did a microlight flight over Victoria Falls. My flight was 15 minutes long and went over the Zambezi River and the falls. The Victoria Falls are an amazing sight from anywhere, but seeing them from the air was incredible. I was able to see the falls in their entirety and from all new angles. The landscape was beautiful and I could see all of the features created by the river. The view went on for miles. I also saw hippos, crocodiles, elephants, zebras, and impalas from the air. The pilot even let me take over flying for a bit! Zambia is a remarkable place and I had the opportunity to do several big excursions during my time there, but the microlight flight is something that I’ll never forget! -

“I spent 8 weeks in Livingstone with African Impact. I spent one of the weeks at Baobuyu Preschool. Here the kids range from 2.5-6 years and are all adorable! I really enjoyed teaching the kids shapes and words starting with the letter ‘H’- including hippo, happy, and hat! -
