We came top of the pack in GoAbroad.com’s review rankings – 9.6/10! We’ve welcomed lots of new people to the staff team; Rich, Kasonde, George, Shu, Jenifer and Claudy! An emergency campaign to build a wall for a local nursery was hugely successful and we raised $1650 in less than a week! We’re incredibly lucky to have such amazing supporters, and happy to announce the wall is completed and Shiners Nursery will remain open for the children!

In May, students from our English Community Classes successfully completed their exams, with 19 students graduating from their current class to the next level. Well done to all and thank you to every volunteer who was involved!

Volunteers delivered one-on-one tuition classes in both a local nursery school and at our Adult English Community Classes during the June school holidays. The students have benefitted incredibly and seen huge progression!

Volunteers delivered a 4-week empowerment program at a local secondary school during the school holidays, where students increased their knowledge of genderbased violence by 19%!

We’re very proud of the Women’s Group we support as they continue to expand their business, having partnered with a local socially responsible hotel to sell their products!

A 5-week career development program was delivered by volunteers to girls seeking refuse at the Network Against Female Genital Mutilation (NAFGEM) center. We talked about a variety of career options and how the girls can pave their way to their desired career!

Volunteers, alongside local community members, inspired a group of secondary school students (and girls at NAGFEM), by inviting a host of inspirational people to speak to them.

“This experience has been absolutely incredible. The staff truly care about the community they are working in and it shows. African Impact is very organized in what they they do from your ride from the airport to the projects you work on. Although this organization has a very set schedule, it is balanced so you are working your whole trip and so that you have time to explore the culture and area. We have weekends free and the activities that are offered are affordable. African Impact has embedded itself in the community so that you are really immersing yourself in the projects. If you are looking to make a true difference, African Impact is the perfect organization to do so.”

Brianna, Education Volunteer 2017

To support our successful literacy program for Maasai community members in the local village, we started up a brand-new project in Moshi town for the Maasai community living there! Volunteers have been teaching English and Kiswahili literacy to 15 Maasai warriors every morning!

We were lucky enough to have been invited to a traditional Maasai ceremony in the village of Kitenden, called Orng’eher Lorkoriangaa, where Maasai warriors become elders! Volunteers joined in the celebrations and we were very proud to see many of our students become Elders of their village!

We continue to support a local business, 6 Rafiki Walking Tours. This quarter, volunteers held a 6-week intensive business development workshop with them, plus recruited 3 new members to the group!

•

Volunteers began a new 6-week English Language and Customer Service course with a group of local tailors who work in the nearby market. This should increase their sales and help them build better relationships with customers.

•

A new weekly project was launched (in collaboration with the Community Development Offer of the local village) to teach basic mathematics and finance skills to 6 businesscooperative groups.

Teresa, one of our Education Volunteers in April, wrote a beautiful blog about the Marangu Cultural Tour offered in Moshi: (check it out here!) “Not only do you explore the jungle on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, but you delve into underground tribal caves, swim in a waterfall, enjoy a fresh Swahili buffet and finish off the day roasting your own coffee beans (all in a days’ work!).

Yoni worked on the Business and Tourism Project with our income-generation group, 6 Rafiki Walking Tours: “I loved the business and tourism project and I had a 5-week curriculum and that was specifically made for my work with 6 Rafiki. African Impact gave me responsibility, and it motivated me to support the group, and work hard! They are an amazing group of entrepreneurs and I am so inspired to have worked with them. I’m a Trainee manager in The Netherlands, and what I’ve learnt here will so greatly benefit my work, and my team.
