We turned 5 years old and celebrated in style with over 100 community students, council leaders, partners and volunteers coming together to make the day a success.

ChildReach Tanzania is partnering and mentoring us with Child Protection.

Our community came together for World Clean Up Day, collecting 21 huge bags of trash on the way!

• During the school break, we discussed a new curriculum with the girls at NAFGEM. Many of the girls hope to be change-makers in their home communities and advocate for girls education, stopping child marriage and female genital mutilation. Over the course of the next year, African Impact will be joining this vision by training the girls in advocacy, facilitation and focus-group skills • The jewellery that our Maasai Mama’s in Moshi Town created has made its way to the African Impact Volunteer House Merchandise corner • In July, we visited Kitendeni, our Maasai students’ village. We held meetings with the village leaders and discussed ongoing projects that we could work on while we’re in Kitendeni. Watch this space!

We created a strong, new partnership with a local physiotherapist who has done full assessments on the residents at Langoni Old Folks Home and we are working together to put in place intervention strategies to build their mobility, strength and health

A brand new Teacher Training project began with our Advanced English Language students, which provides them with the skills to deliver lessons, write lesson plans, and gives them time to facilitate classes to Foundation and Intermediate English Language students, all under the support of our volunteers and coordinators

We switched things up in the junior’s class at Nursery School and instead of us using a number of English questions to greet the children, the children now greet each other! It’s great to see peer-to-peer support, and good for the children to use English Language amongst themselves

We’ve held two Trivia Nights in Moshi Town to fundraise for the Wakipa Women’s Group since our last newsletter, and word has gotten out about the evening. We’ve managed to raise over $600 through just two Trivia Nights – Moshi residents are out in force to support us!

In July, Wakipa graduated from their 14-week Catering and Events Management Course. All group members passed their practical and theory exams with flying colors, and are now being mentored by a professional businesswoman from Moshi, until January 2019.

Our second women’s’ group, Hope Tailors, have a brand new classroom space for their sessions. After a few weeks delivering sessions in a small, cramped area – the group have relocated to our new partnership pre-school and are enjoying privacy to discuss women’s’ health topics.

We distributed the funds for our new income generating group, Msaranga Women’s Group and Hope Tailors group. The women were all very pleased with the amount they received and intend on saving it, or using it for their families.

“My husband and I have always wanted to have a volunteering vacation, where we could give our time and talents while in a new place, experiencing new things. We had a life changing experience. We were immersed in the local community as part of our projects. We feel like we actually got to know the people, the town, the feel of the place, in just 2 weeks. Which, by the way, flew by and was a good appetizer, but we are hungry for more!”

Without a doubt, our favorite moment this quarter has to be our 5 Year Anniversary. It was so special to hold the event at Langoni Old Folks Home, and meant that all community members could attend. The day not only marked 5 years of work in Moshi, but also marked the graduation of our women’s group – Wakipa – from their Catering Course, as they worked hard to cater (for the first time ever) to over 100 people. The Head of Community Development from Moshi Municipal Council was in attendance, and gave an inspiring and encouraging speech to all community members, and the African Impact project team. We finished the day with speeches from a member of each project, and by the end, there was no need for us to explain the impact we’d had: the community members did it for us.

Birthdays, birthdays, birthdays! This quarter we have celebrated 4 birthdays in our African Impact staff team, which has meant spending a lot of time as a big group of staff and volunteers eating birthday cake in rooftop bars overlooking Mt. Kilimanjaro. Not only is it a great way to spend your birthday, but we’ve managed to find a hidden spot in Moshi that is away from the crowds - so we have the whole bar to ourselves (we might rename it the AI Rooftop!).
