Accommodation Madagascar is a destination still untouched by mass tourism. This means that much of the accommodation is more basic than other countries such as Mauritius or the Seychelles. Luxury (4*) accommodation is available in the more travelled areas such as Nosy Be and Antananarivo, but these still fall short of the western world’s standards. Please be prepared for this, and consider this as part of the rustic charm of Madagascar.

The service from Jenman Safaris was first rate; from the original enquiry to the final booking. In so far as Madagascar & Nosy Be is concerned, it is still a little piece of heaven on earth and I fell completely in love with the environment, the culture and the people. You need to be adventurous & have an open mind. You cannot visit expecting it to be like other Indian Ocean islands e.g. Mauritius. You need to get out and appreciate the wonder and beauty of the people and the land.

Ankarana Special Reserve
Just an hours drive from Diego lies this excellent example of montane rainforest. It is visitorfriendly with good information and hiking trails, a comfortable climate and a vast array of flora and fauna. Highlights are night walks, sightings of lemurs, chameleons, orchids, birds and mongoose, as well as the waterfalls and crater lake.
The reserve is an island of limestone tsingy and forest, with caves and canyons which have collapsed over time, allowing a river-fed forest to grow. Many lemur species, birds, reptiles and insects make Ankarana their home.
Upon arrival to Diego Suarez, we drive to Montagne d’Ambre National Park and enjoy a guided afternoon visit of the park, before returning to our warm and cozy lodge for the evening. The following day we enjoy our time in the reserve, exploring and observing the endemic wildlife known to the area. In particular, we look for the two species of habituated lemurs, mongoose, and the multitude of birds living in the park. Returning to Diego, we have time to explore the town, before departing the next day – homeward bound. Russian Bay - A beautiful and remote place opposite Nosy Be. Enjoy the fantastic marine life for snorkelling and fishing, and the abundant birdlife, reptiles and lemurs. Nosy Iranja - Nosy Iranja is a peaceful and remote island with crystal clear waters, good fishing, wonderful walks and fantastic opportunities to sea kayak and explore on foot. Mahalina - here we relax in the beautiful surroundings, or kayak up the mangrove swamps. The area is great for snorkelling, fishing and spear-fishing.
15km from the north-western coast of Madagascar lies the large island of Nosy Be. Here you can still discover a small piece of paradise, despite its growing tourism industry. Nosy Be offers travellers a taste of everything Madagascan, such as lemurs and chameleons, local rum and delicious seafood, beaches and activities and a warm inviting ocean. Accommodation options are varied also, and most will find something suitable. Two of Madagascar’s most exclusive resorts (Nosy Iranja, and Tsarabanjina) are accessible from Nosy Be.
We may use A-frame bungalows on Mahalina, instead of camping. Lokobie Reserve - a protected reserve, Lokobie offers wildlife galore with the likelihood of you spotting several lemur species and chameleons. Nosy Tanikely - a marine reserve teeming with underwater flora and fauna, allows us the chance for some superb snorkelling in warm waters with great visibility.
A visit to Nosy Be does not restrict you to one destination, as it is part of an Archipelago, with many smaller islands surrounding it. Some of our favourites include Nosy Tanikely – a marine reserve offering excellent snorkelling in crystal clear water, Nosy Komba, where you can have a lemur jump on your shoulder, and Nosy Sakatia, where you can snorkel, dive, hike and relax away from the crowds of the mainland. Climb up Mount Passot (350m) and you will be able to see Nosy Be in all its beauty: its jagged coasts, the numerous bays and lovely coves, the deserted beaches and the sparkling water.
Nosy Komba - an island with quaint villages, craft markets and famed for its habituated lemurs, who may take a jump onto your shoulders! Day 8 sees us returning to Nosy Be port, where you will catch your flight home, or stay on for a few days at your leisure. Photo: Don Pinnock - Getaway
Sakatia Island Situated near Nosy Be, Sakatia Island is a tropical paradise and a true breakaway. With no roads or motor vehicles but plenty of foot paths, you can wander at leisure and explore the beauty of the island. It offers typically unspoilt tropical fauna and flora and has a population of only 300. The island is fringed by spectacular coral reefs to be enjoyed by the snorkeller or scuba diver alike.
Radama Archipelago Located 90km south west of Nosy Be, the Radama Archipelago consists of four islands, of which Kalakajour is the most northern and the smallest. It is here that Jenman Madagascar Island Safaris has built Turtle Bay Camp – a privately owned fishing base, which is home to fish eagles, beautiful coral beds, and spectacular fishing. Just 3km off the beach you will find a continental drop off with abundant Tuna, Barracuda, Sailfish, and Giant Kingfish.

Departing from Antananarivo, we drive east through the green and luxuriant vegetation to the national park of Andasibe. That evening and the next morning we enter the reserve to watch the world-renowned night active lemurs, & to see the Indri – the largest lemur species. Continuing east, we reach Ankanin’ny Nofy, or “Nest of Dreams”. Here we visit the private park of Le Palmarium, where you will discover the endemic flora and fauna of Madagascar, such as rare palm trees and orchids, as well as reptiles and 10 different species of lemurs living in its trees. Later you will transfer on the Pangalanes Channel by boat to Tamatave, where we continue on to the magical island of St Marie.

Here you can relax for several days, enjoying the lagoon, tropical flowers and almost-Caribbean atmosphere. Plenty of optional excursions await you, such as a boat trip to the small island of Ile aux Nattes, or a visit to the Pirates cemetery.
A series of lakes linked by canals transport you from Manambato to Tamatave on a small motor boat. Stopping for the night at Lake Ampitabe affords you the opportunity to visit the Palmarium reserve with good trails and friendly lemurs.
For outdoor-lovers, the island offers many opportunities to explore on foot, or you can enjoy the crystal waters of the Indian Ocean while snorkelling or scuba diving. From July to September, you will have the chance to see the majestic humpback whales near the island.
The peaceful boat journey takes you past local scenes of fishermen checking their nets and children playing in the canals.

Sainte Marie Island The island of Sainte Marie is known for its beautiful white sand beaches and coral reefs. Its dense vegetation and the difficulty of navigating the lagoons which surround it made it an ideal base for pirates and, later a colony for convicts. Today the island is a vacation paradise. It has the world’s only pirates’ cemetery and visitors can walk among cashew and cinnamon trees, snorkel from the offshore islet or dive from one of the beautiful sandbanks. The island is less touristy than other resort islands of Madagascar, making it an ideal location to relax and enjoy the sunshine. From July to September, humpback whales can be seen playing in the ocean and breaching out of the sea in the narrow canal that separates the island from the mainland. They can be seen everywhere from the island but it is best to take a whale watching cruise and get an up-close look at these magnificent grey giants.

CENTRAL HIGHLANDS

1000 VIEWS OF MADAGASCAR Discover the best of Madagascar on this fascinating 11-day tour with lemurs, colourful tribes, tropical beaches, bustling markets and ever-changing scenery.
ITINERARY
Fianarantsoa
The most well-travelled route in Madagascar covers the central highlands. This area runs from the capital city, Antananarivo, down the RN7 to the south-west coast to Tulear’s white sandy beaches and rich marine life. Containing the country’s main international airport, Antananarivo is a place you will most certainly encounter. Antananarivo, better known in the shortened version, “Tana”, is the bustling capital of Madagascar with approximately 2 million inhabitants. Situated in the high plateau, it is a fascinating city with cobbled roads, zebu carts and clusters of red clay houses on hilltops overlooking patchwork paddy fields. Tana is an interesting place to explore for a day or two if you have time.
Andasibe National Park An excellent wildlife experience, Andasibe is a 4-hour drive east from Tana, and so should be visited on an overnight basis. We would recommend two nights for a good experience (see our package opposite for details). Expect to see the famous Indri Indri (the largest species of lemur), grey bamboo lemurs, brown lemurs, and other species. Andasibe is also good for spotting a variety of chameleons, frogs, spiders and birds.
Day 1: Antananarivo – Andasibe National Park Day 2: Andasibe National Park Day 3: Andasibe National Park – Antsirabe Day 4: Antsirabe – Ranomafana National Park Day 5: Ranomafana National Park Day 6: Fianarantsoa – Isalo Day 7: Isalo National Park Day 8: Isalo – Ifaty Day 9: Ifaty Day 10: Ifaty – Tulear – Antananarivo Day 11: Antananarivo Departing from Antananarivo, we drive east through the green and luxuriant vegetation to the national park of Andasibe. That evening and the next morning we enter the reserve to watch the world-renowned night active lemurs & to see the Indri – the largest lemur species. The following day we get closer to the islands second largest tribe – the Betsimisaraka. Heading southwards across the highlands with its spectacular eroded hills called “lavaka”, we arrive in Antsirabe and explore. We spend a day in the National park of Ranomafana, enjoying its beautiful landscape, primary forest and many species of endemic wildlife. Continuing south, we stop in at Ambalavao for a touch of wine tasting, and then reach Isalo – home to the extraordinary landscapes of Isalo National Park. A days hiking here reveals to you many types of vegetation, animals, reptiles, and incredible sights of natural beauty. Leaving the interior behind, we enter the driest part of the country with its fascinating Spiny forest – Tulear. In Ifaty you have a chance to recover from your travels on the tropical beach, or take part in some of the many activities available to you. We return to Tana by plane where you can relax or take in the bustling street life before your flight out of Madagascar the next morning.
Ranomafana National Park Accessible by road from Antananarivo or by plane to Fianarantsoa, Ranomafana is a superb mountain rainforest housing 12 species of lemur, over 100 species of birds (36 endemic) and many reptiles and insects. We visit both of the above destinations in our 1000 Views of Madagascar tour (see page 24)

South Highlights: Excellent surfing, rich marine life for snorkelling and diving, hiking in Isalo National Park, plentiful wildlife and the spiny forest. West Highlights: Tsingy, good wildlife viewing, trekking and luxury beach destinations.
West
The south of Madagascar is the most exotic, with spiny forests, abundant wildlife and excellent beaches and coral reefs.
The west of Madagascar is mostly dry with deciduous forests, and contains the famous Tsingy and several National Parks.
Isalo is an excellent hiking park, with several established circuits. A huge attraction is the sandstone rocks which are cut by deep canyons and have eroded into unusual shapes, as well as the rare endemic plants and the plentiful lemurs.
Fort Dauphin, Berenty Reserve and Andohahela Special Reserve Fort Dauphin has a backdrop of green mountains flowing into a deep blue sea, and it is the base for Berenty Reserve and Andohahela Special Reserve. Berenty Reserve is world famous for its population of ring-tailed and sifakas (dancing lemurs), and offers the best opportunity in Madagascar for wildlife viewing. Birdwatching is also rewarding here, and the excellent forest trails make the reserve a safe and easy place to explore. Andohahela contains both rainforest and spiny forest, but this reserve is not as easily accessible as Berenty, requiring a 4x4 vehicle, and is more for the committed adventurer.
Lake Tsimanampetsotsa National Park
The large shallow soda lake is the highlight of this National park, which has some striking spiny forest, and baobabs, and most famously, the lake itself, which is renowned for its waterfowl, notably flamingos and the Madagascar plover.
Beza-Mahafaly Special Reserve Not only does this reserve contain both spiny and riverine forest, with habituated ring-tailed lemurs and sifakas lemurs, but it is also home to the fossa – Madagascar’s largest carnivore.
