China
A place of superlatives – one of the largest countries in the world, the most populous, one of the most powerful, one of the most beautiful, yet one of the most unknown. A place of huge deserts, vast plains, magical forests and some of the highest mountains and longest rivers. A place where time has stood still in parts while in other areas things are changing daily, such as in the ever-exciting cities of Shanghai and Beijing.

China – Cleveland Collection Asia 07
08 Cleveland Collection Asia – China China – Introduction It would take a lifetime to explore China, the fourth largest country on earth and the most populous. It is a country about which we seem to know a lot, both culturally and historically, and yet we know so little because of its vastness and the speed with which it is changing and embracing the twenty-first century. As well as its rivers and mountains, great plains and vast deserts it also has some of the most extraordinary artefacts on earth. Over the centuries it has held a fascination for explorers, traders and artists with its silks, spices, teas and porcelains being coveted by every nation. Cities and culture From the verve and vitality of Shanghai to the gentle gardens of Suzhou, (which Marco Polo described as one of the most beautiful cities in China), and from the temples of Kunming to the grandeur of Beijing, China has possibly the greatest variety of cities. Go south to Guangdong, one of the first to open to outside travellers and settlers, many of whom then crossed to Macau, China’s answer to Las Vegas, and you will soon realise that China has cities for all seasons and all reasons. And those cities hold some of the greatest cultural and architectural treasures in the world; from the Great Wall of China, a day trip from Beijing, itself home to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, to Xi’an, with its massive display of terracotta warriors, and Kunming, with its Forest of Steles, a vast exhibition of stone sculptures. In between times there are temples, monasteries and pagodas. Shanghai is an historical gem of old quarters – French & British – and Art Deco designs, with some of the most exciting modern architecture anywhere, as well as great retail opportunities in markets and malls.
Nature Again an explosion of choice from the huge mountains and plains of Tibet, to the glorious Yangtze and the gorges, towns, villages and spectacular scenery along its route, which includes the three gorges and the three lesser gorges. The Tiger Leaping Gorge is reputedly the deepest gorge in the world and is breathtaking, with a cruise along the river one of the highlights of any visit to China. Stop at Fengdu, the deserted City of Ghosts, or head for Shangri-La in Yunnan Province with its gentle scenery and more than 2,500 species of flora and fauna. You can visit the gardens and the silk museum of Suzhou and take a day trip to Lake Tai and its 90 islands, and before you leave try to spot pandas in the forests of Sichuan. From the warm waters of the South China Sea to the snow-capped Himalayas, China is a traveller’s joy.
