AfriKids is a hugely successful non-governmental organisation, which has been working with communities of the Upper East Region of Ghana on various ground-breaking projects since 2002. Ethical trade initiatives such as this one combine traditional crafts with contemporary design in a responsible and fair trading partnership. Each purchase from the handmade Fresh Start range directly supports the work of AfriKids whose work benefits over 100,000 people across the north of Ghana. Their work ranges from the more traditional children’s projects including foster homes, schools and street child centres to more groundbreaking initiatives which tackle complex cultural issues including child trafficking, child labour and the spirit child phenomenon. Operation Fresh Start, the AfriKids project which has inspired the name for this range, has successfully resettled over 150 young people from the slums of southern Ghana to their northern homes where many are now being supported to train as seamstresses. The success of Operation Fresh Start can be demonstrated through a number of the tailors and seamstresses who produced this range, having benefitted from the life-changing programme themselves.
