Back To The Roots

How often do you go on a journey back in time tracking something down? Look around. Can you remember where all those things in your house came from? Check your mobile phone. When and where did you meet all those people under “K”? Let’s move to the next level. Try to remember names of each of your classmates in year one. Take your time… Not easy, right? It’s amazing how easily we forget events, facts and even people? A few years back I saw a show on TV about a Japanese guy who left his country in his twenties and never had a chance to go back or communicate with his relatives. After about 40 years he couldn’t remember how to speak or read his mother language. Back then I thought it must have been just a trick used by the producers of the show to boost the ratings, it can’t be true. Living in Australia today, I realise it was very possible. The secret is to find that healthy balance between your past and your future, treasure your background while investing in your future. It is our responsibility.

B

ut for Milwaukee Bucks forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute -- who is actually a prince in his native Cameroon -- turning up against such basketball royalty is an enthralling experience. “I take pride in my defense,” says Mbah a Moute, a 6 feet 8 inches forward who has leaped onto the NBA scene in the last few years, becoming an athletic ambassador for Africa in the world’s top basketball league.

14  AFRIQAN TIMES MAGAZINE | JUNE 2012

Born and raised in Cameroon, Mbah a Moute is the third-youngest son of the chieftain of a village near the country’s capital Yaounde. His father is also the general manager of the Cameroonian National Employment Fund. Describing his upbringing, Mbah a Moute is quick to point out that it was far from luxurious, calling it “regular middle class.” “When people hear you are a prince they think of Eddie Murphy and [1988 movie] “Coming to America,” which is totally not true,” he explains. “My dad is just the chief of my village, it’s not like Zamunda or the crazy things you see in the movie -- I don’t have my face on the money but you get treated with respect and have ceremonies.” The agile forward is one of seven African basketball players currently in the NBA, hoping to walk in the footsteps of other basketball legends from the continent such as Hakeem Olajuwon and Dikembe Mutombo. He is the lynchpin of the Bucks’ defensive play and widely regarded as one of the league’s best players to counter opposition threats -- Mbah a Moute has so far guarded everyone, from towering forwards like Kevin Garnett to shorter scoring machines such as Dwyane Wade. “I think there is no one like him in the game because he can guard one through five positions on the floor -- big guys, small guys,” says Australian player Andrew Bogut. “I call him the fire blanket because when guys get on fire in the game, we put Luc on them and he usually shuts them down,” adds Bogut, who recently left Bucks to play for the Golden State Warriors. Raised in Yaounde, a metropolitan city with more than a million residents, Mbah a Moute first picked up a basketball when he was 12 years old. By the time he turned 15, he was one of the best

African & Distinguished

youth players in his country, and three years later he was playing college basketball with UCLA in the United States. “It’s a pretty interesting journey,” he says. “When I first came here I just knew how to say ‘hi,’ ‘how are you’ and ‘good night’ -- pretty much that was about it.” But it didn’t take long for him to overcome the initial challenges of his new environment. His energetic game quickly became popular with the fans and Mbah a Moute developed a faithful following around the UCLA campus. “There was another guy on the team from Cameroon and the fans were so good to us and they created the ‘Cameroon crazies,’” he recalls. “They had flags and T-shirts and one time they came out with a shirt -- ‘Moute kicks Boute’ -- and then next year everyone starts wearing that and I was like ‘wow.’” His athletic talents also caught the eye of NBA’s top teams and in 2008, Mbah a Moute fulfilled his childhood dream and became a professional player at the age of 21. Although he wasn’t initially seen as one of the most exciting prospects to come out of college basketball that year -- he was a secondround draft pick for the Bucks -- Mbah a Moute was determined to not let this chance slip through his fingers.

“Most second-round picks don’t stick -- a lot of times don’t even play -- but I think I was determined,” he says. “I just needed the opportunity and the chance and the Bucks gave me the opportunity and once I got that I seized it and the rest is history,” Mbah a Moute says smiling. And he has plenty of reasons to smile. He did not only stick to the world’s toughest league but he recently re-signed with the Bucks for another four years -- the new deal more than tripled his salary, netting him close to $19 million. But despite all his success in the basketball courts of America, the 25-year-old NBA star has not forgotten his roots. He wants to give back to his country and continent, helping young Africans to realize their potential. “The most rewarding part is being able to impact people,” he says. “I represent Cameroon, Africa, keeping the dream for other kids.” In the summer of 2009, Mbah a Moute traveled to Johannesburg, South Africa, to take part in Basketball Without Borders, the NBA’s ongoing effort to give talented youth a chance to play the game. “There is a lot of potential in Africa, athletically, intellectually,” he says. “You’ve got a lot of different people and they need to understand that they have a lot of potential and can do great things and moving forward to becoming the Africa of tomorrow.”

“The most rewarding part is being able to impact people,” he says. “I represent Cameroon, Africa, keeping the dream for other kids.”

ONLY WATER ONCE ON YOUR ROSTERED WATERING DAYS â–

Right now, everyone in Perth is being asked to take 60 litres - or around 10% - off their daily water use. That’s because every litre we save now is a litre banked for the future, and will reduce the amount we need from our underground water sources and dams. In the garden, be sure to only water once on your rostered watering days, either before 9am or after 6pm. Watering in the morning is generally best, since the water is available to the plants throughout the day when they need it most. And for pop-up sprinklers, try to keep to a ten minutes per station. a

Phenomenal Woman

You’re currently the Policy Manager for Africa with Google. What exactly does your job entail? I focus on supporting three priorities on the policy and government relations side. The first is access, getting more African users online. We’ve made tremendous progress in encouraging the governments of African countries to adapt policies or partnerships that can get more people connected. The second thing I focus on is content. I always ask the question: As more Africans are going online, are they finding content that is meaningful and relevant to them, or are they just consuming from everywhere else. As Africans, we have the capacity to generate our own content. Though we are generating, we’re not putting it up online, so I focus on encouraging government to put up their content online for transparency purposes as well as helping them with planning. I also help create secondary opportunities for developers and App builders who want to take advantage of that. The third area I focus on is on the role of technology and what it can play in terms of building an ecosystem. It’s great to say young people should get connected to the internet but with the kind of unemployment we’re seeing, there’s always the money question and we’re focusing on how we can work with policy makers, government, 22  AFRIQAN TIMES MAGAZINE | JUNE 2012

industries on creating a broader ecosystem and making the internet and access to technology more affordable. We are also working on helping small businesses across Africa get their websites online very inexpensively. Basically, I work with government to ensure they provide regulations that allows technology to thrive. You have a very busy schedule between your job at Google, being a WEF Global Young Leader, a young mother of 3 kids and a wife. Yet you still make time handle a series of frequent speaking engagements across Africa. How do you juggle all of this? I don’t sleep much. It helps that I love what I do and I am very passionate about it, so it doesn’t feel like work. Also I work in a flexible environment where the emphasis is on delivery, not on physical presence, and I have a fantastic support system at home. So I think there is a whole set of few things that come together: One, I love what I do so it makes it a bit easier. Two, the environment I work in is flexible and the support system is tremendous and I’m raising my kids to understand that mummy works and she travels and they’re fine with it. It’s also important for them to see that I care about the world I live in and I do want to have an impact. At the end of the day, I’ve also come to terms

with the fact that I won’t do everything perfectly all the time. At any one particular time, there is something in my life that is suffering as a result of my many responsibilities; most of the time it’s me. But I try to find a balance between everything I do. Africa’s tech scene is growing rapidly, but the number of venture capitalists and investors focused on the continent is pretty dismal. What do you think is the reason behind this? African tech innovation is beginning to attract considerable seed funding. It’s not just enough yet, but I think it’s growing. In South Africa, Google established Umbono- a partnership with a few other VCs to do $25,000 seed investments. But we don’t really want to be in the business of VC. We were just trying to say, look, it’s doable and here is a model of how you can do it. We’ve encouraged other investors to structure their funding in that sense. But there is a need for venture capital for African tech entrepreneurs. Sometimes the entrepreneurs just need someone to bet on them and take a chance with them or their idea. Ideally, it’s the local billionaires in African countries who should set up these VC firms, angel networks and incubators. And there’s another key issue – we need to educate our holders of wealth in the

sense that they have a social responsibility to fund and groom upcoming entrepreneurs with remarkable ideas in their communities. What would it cost a billionaire or one of the rich people to take a risk with a few entrepreneurs and set up a $500,000 innovation or VC fund? What will your African legacy be? It’s up for people to define that for me. I’m driven by changing our conditions … We see so much potential within the continent and the singular to my work is to find means to tap into that potential whether it is through Ushahidi and how could we get people to tell their own stories, whether it’s through politicians with Mzalendo and how can we get our citizens to get their politicians accountable; or at Google with how can we get more Africans online and get the continent to benefit from technology and what it can do for us. So it’s about focusing on untapped potential of the continent and saying that at least I did my little thing to make sure that we lived up to our potential as a continent. If I was to sum it up in one word, my legacy would be “Someone who talked less and acted more.” If I were to have an epitaph, I’d want it to read: “She did stuff.”

I am taking part in Miss Africa Perth to represent my country – Bostwana, I love the opportunity to show a snippet of our culture; that we are beautiful people, we are welcoming people and we are proud to be African.

We all want to be world-changers and difference-makers, don’t we? As I look into the world around me, I see so much low selfesteem. A relentless striving to find one’s self, to fit in so badly to a society so mismatched.

Miss Africa Perth offers the unique and privileged opportunity to represent Africa in a positive and meaningful way on an international stage. I would like to use that opportunity to hopefully bring about greater awareness of Africa’s plight and the beauty Africa has to offer.

APPLE MACBOOK PRO WITH RETINA

MOPHIE JUICE PACK PRO

FERRARI GOLF COLLECTION

Just like the latest iPhone and iPad, the all-new MacBook Pro sports a bee-you-tee-full-clark Retina display, making it the world’s highest resolution notebook display. But contrary to what you’d think, the new MacBook Pro actually sheds inches and pounds, and is now 25% thinner than the previous generation, sitting at a mere 0.71-inches. The MacBook Pro packs in a quadcore CPU up to 2.7 GHz, up to 16GB of RAM, a crazy graphics card, and up 768GB of SSD storage. Plus, it’s got a 7-hour battery, FaceTime HD camera, SD slot, HDMI, USB 3, Thunderbolt, and a new Magsafe power connector for the clumsy among us. Stars: ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪

The new Mophie Juice Pack Pro assumes a couple of things about you. One, that you’re in need of extra juice for your iPhone, and two, that you’re either involved in a profession that puts your phone in constant peril, or a complete klutz. If any or all of the above describe you, the Pro has got your back with a Mil-Spec ruggedized case that protects your iPhone 4 or 4S from water, sand, and impacts and a massive 2500 mAh battery that can completely recharge your phone — and then some.

The Ferrari Golf Collection is the result of a collaboration between the legendary Italian automaker and Cobra/Puma golf, and includes the signature Cobra Ferrari Driver, which is based on the Cobra ZL Encore, but has undergone some changes at the hands of Ferrari’s engineers to improve aerodynamics, increase club head speed, and generally make it look more badass. Other pieces of the collection include an accessory range with premium visors, belts, gloves, umbrellas and bags, an apparel range with polos, knits, jackets and pants, and a signature Ferrari Golf Shoe.

2013 MERCEDES-BENZ SLS AMG GT

FITBIT ARIA WI-FI SMART SCALE

STAKE 3-IN-1 BBQ TOOL

The 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT bests its predecessor by 20 hp thanks to additional tuning of the 6.2L V8, making it a tenth quicker in the sprint from 0-60 mph — it now takes just 3.6 seconds — and also features new AMG Adaptive Performance Suspension, new, optional designo style interior packages featuring the highest-end leather upholstery with contrast stitching and diamond quilt details, and the same, rock-solid AMG Speedshift sevenspeed dual-clutch transmission.

Using a Fitbit to get in shape? Then odds are you’re also watching your weight — so why not combine the two with the Fitbit Aria Wi-Fi Smart Scale ($130)? This high-tech bathroom floordweller tracks your weight, BMI, and body fat percentage, automatically uploads your stats to Fitbit.com, where they’ll enhance the data from your Tracker, and automatically recognizes up to eight users so it won’t be getting you confused with other members of your household.

Most grilling tool sets include three basic tools: a spatula, tongs, and fork. The Stake 3-in-1 BBQ Tool ($30) combines all three into a single, grilldominating tool that features leaf spring tongs, a slide-out fork that hides away when not in use so you’re not stabbing your food — or guests — accidentally, and a locking mechanism for the wooden handles to convert the entire mess into a spatula.
