Hello, The AFRO American Newspapers is proud to present its first Diversity in Careers and Education Expo. As the leading source of news and information for the Black community for over 120 years, the AFRO is committed to finding unique ways to connect the community with opportunities for positive change. Although, as last week reported in the AFRO, the Black unemployment rate is on the decline; we still have a long way to go before the diversity of the workforce reaches a level of equal inclusiveness. The Expo’s participating employers realize this and on Tuesday, will be looking to identify and even hire from the talented and diverse pool of candidates expected to attend the Careers and Education Expo. This Expo will also give those who want to further their education or even change careers, a way to meet with educational and training institutions to discuss enrollment opportunities. Career training workshops will be conducted onsite by ADP and the U.S. Secret Service. Everything is free and open to the public. So whether you’re looking for a job or a way to give yourself a competitive edge, we hope you’ll join us on Tuesday, June 24th at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. In the meantime, polish up your resume’, pull out your best business suit, and get ready for what might be the beginning of a brand new career and opportunity. Wishing you gratifying success,

rea residents seeking to boost their economic prospects are invited to attend the AFRO American Newspapers’ Career and Education expo at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum in downtown Baltimore June 24 “As both a career and education expo, this event is not just for job seekers but also for those looking to further their education or perhaps even learn a new trade,” said the AFRO’s Director of Advertising Lenora Howze. The jobs and education fair was organized in recognition of the persistent jobs vacuum that exists within Black communities in

Baltimore, the tri-state area and beyond. The Great Recession of 2007-2009 took a heavy toll on the U.S. workforce and disproportionately so on African-American workers, experts said. “Unemployment skyrocketed during the recession” and Blacks had the highest jobless rates, said Valerie Wilson, director of the Economic Policy Institute’s Program on Race, Ethnicity, and the Economy According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Black unemployment rate rose steadily from 8.3 percent in 2007 to 10.1 percent in 2008, 14.8 percent in 2009 and topped off at 16 percent in 2010. Since then, as hundreds of thousands of jobs were created, jobless rates have been Continued on Page 6

decreasing for all groups, but less so for African Americans, who continued to see double-digit unemployment rates from 15.8 percent in 2011, to 13.8 percent in 2012 and 13.1 percent in 2013. The disparities in unemployment rates is nothing new but it has grown since 2007, Wilson said. “That is something we’ve seen throughout history since these statistics began being collected by race,” she said. “Typically, the Black unemployment rate is twice that of the White unemployment rate.” For example, in May 2014, only 5.4 percent of Whites were unemployed compared to 11.5 percent of Blacks. And overall, the African-American unemployment rate remains 3.3 percentage points higher than the 2007 average while the White unemployment rate is just 1.2 percentage points higher than in 2007. Underemployment figures bear the disparity out. The National Urban League, in its 2014 annual State of Black America report called “One Nation Underemployed: Jobs Rebuild America,” found that the underemployment rate for African-American workers was 20.5 percent, compared to 18.4 percent for Hispanic workers and 11.8 percent for White workers. “Many Americans are being left behind and that includes African-Americans Continued on Page 8

and Latinos who are being disproportionately left behind by the job creation that we see,” NUL President Marc Morial said. Economists have posited several possible reasons for the disparities faced by Blacks in the labor market, including workplace discrimination, lower education attainment rates, overconcentration in occupations with high levels of unemployment, greater concentration in urban areas where job opportunities may be relatively limited and lower social capital. “The way people get connected to jobs is through informal networks,” Wilson said. “[But] if you’re in a community where the people you know are also unemployed then your access to getting jobs that way is limited.” The AFRO’s Diversity in Careers and Education Expo attempts to address many of those concerns, Howze said. “It is the responsibility of the Black media to provide unique ways to educate and enhance the lives of our community,” she said. “[And] this Career and Education Expo is an AFRO initiative designed to help diversify the workforce and to provide educational and training Continued on Page 10
