The morning of Sept. 30, the auditorium at the Empowerment Temple church in Northwest Baltimore was filled with more than 200 men, women and children, who listened to the representatives from various agencies giving pertinent information on how to achieve homeownership.

The seminar was sponsored by HomeFree USA, a leading HUD approved nonprofit organization specializing in homebuying guidance, foreclosure prevention and credit improvement.

Senior loan officers from SunTrust mortgage, Movement Mortgage, real estate agents from the Keller Williams Realty Company, were among the many vendors who were on hand to assist the interested potential homebuyers in purchasing their first home.

Bishop James Davis, of the AME Church (Second Episcopal District), welcomed the audience and provided information on the importance of owning instead of renting a home.

Rev. Jamal Bryant, Pastor of Empowerment Temple, gave statistics, which indicate African American home ownership lags behind homeownership by Whites, Asians, and Hispanics.

The Baltimore Book Festival was held Sept. 22 through Sept. 24, at the Baltimore Inner Harbor.

The three day event was produced by The Baltimore Office Of Promotion and The Arts. Over 500 authors participated in one of the largest literary festival on the East Coast. The festival included more than 100 exhibitors, cooking demos by celebrity chefs, storytellers, interactive arts and crafts, music performances, poetry, food vendors, panel discussions, local booksellers and readings.

On October 7, at the Richard Starr Ross Research building of Johns Hopkins Medicine, the seventh annual Henrietta Lacks Memorial Lecture was held. Each year, Baltimore residents, researchers, and doctors all come together to honor the life and legacy of Henrietta Lacks. Many speakers, including Lisa A Cooper, Dr. Roland Patillo, David Lacks Jr. and other members of the Lacks family were in attendance. The lecture took place in the Turner Lecture Hall, where the 2017 winners of both the Henrietta Lacks Dunbar Health Sciences Scholarship and the Urban Health Institute’s Henrietta Lacks Memorial Community Award were announced.
