However, there is a difference between an athlete who competes in glamourous high-profile Division I major college sports such as football and basketball and those who compete in lower division non-revenue Olympic sports such as lacrosse or track and field. Chris Van Hollen told a group of Prince George’s County men that fatherhood is one of the most important undertakings a man has during his lifetime. District 24 is located in central Prince George’s County that borders the District of Columbia on the west and goes beyond the Beltway in the east. The district is 85.2 percent Black, according to the 2010 census. Ward currently represents District 24 on the Prince George’s County Democratic Central Committee and was elected in 2014. He wants the voters of the county to give him another four years so he can continue his work. “I believe in Prince George’s County,” Franklin told the AFRO. “I love its exceptional diversity and I have invested my life and family in this county and I want to work to make it a greater place.” Franklin is a candidate for one of the two newly created at-large county council seats. He is running against a colleague, Prince George’s County Council member Karen Toles (D-District 7), and other candidates including Gerron Levi, Calvin Hawkins, Juanita CulbreathMiller, Melvin B. Johnson, Julian Lopez, Reginald Tyer, and Jonathan White for one of the two spots for the Democratic Party nomination. The Democratic Party primary is June 26. Franklin Wants to Take His Service Countywide
As the state of Maryland struggles to fund various public services, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), announced new funding to support some of the state’s most critical public safety programs. The funding is included in the federal Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies appropriations bill which passed the Senate Committee on Appropriations
on June 14th. According to a press release, the package includes: • $482.5 million to help state and local partners combat heroin, synthetic drugs, and opioids; • $497.5 million for grants provided by the Office on Violence Against Women; • $22.5 million for law enforcement to purchase equipment, such as body cameras; and • $235 million for Community Oriented Policing Services hiring, which
will provide grants to hire and train additional police officers. The entire proposed federal package totals $62.995 billion in appropriations. Agencies funded under the bill include the U.S. Departments of Commerce and Justice, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Science Foundation. “This appropriations bill makes critical investments in keeping our country safe, Continued on A2
