The Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall(JBM-HH) Gospel Service hosted a holiday service members and family recognition banquet at the Fort Myer, Va. Officer’s Club. Nearly 300 guests enjoyed an evening of fellowship, inspirational music, door prizes, and a sumptuous meal that was highlighted by the awarding of “gifts” to military families and service members. Miss DC USA 2015 and Miss DC USA Teen 2015 were crowned Dec. 21 at the Renaissance Hotel in Northwest. The young ladies vied the coveted title by competing in swimsuit and evening gown competitions which was capped off with a Q&A session with the judges. Naira Tarleton-Allen was selected as Miss DC USA Teen 2015 and Lizzy Olsen was crowned Miss DC USA 2015. Prior to the crowning, the 2014 Miss DC USA Teen, Dominick Fink and the 2014 Miss DC USA, Ciera Nicole Butts took their final walk. They both were presented with special gifts of memory by the pageant director, Carla Crawford. Army Master Sgt. Tanza Green and Specialist Kiaya Jackson were also acknowledged as a salute to our defenders of the Nation. The next step for the queens will be preparing for and participating in national pageants this summer.

The Baltimore Chapter of Continental Societies hosted its annual Charities Gala on Dec. 28 at Martin’s West. The event is one of the largest attended fundraisers in Baltimore during the holiday season. In order to provide financial aid to deserving students in the Baltimore Metropolitan area, the Baltimore Chapter raises funds for its Baltimore Continental Scholarship Fund. The Chapter also continues to promote and develop the welfare of disadvantaged youth, by improving their recreational facilities, advancing their educational opportunities, and sponsoring a climate of security and well-being in their environment.

The 30th Anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Breakfast sponsored by the Howard L. Cornish Metropolitan Baltimore Chapter and the Morgan State University National Alumni Association (MSUNAA) was held, Jan. 10, in the Calvin and Tina Tyler Ballroom at Morgan State University. The annual breakfast is designed, not only to commemorate the life work of Dr. King, but to honor Baltimoreans and organizations for their community service, and to recognize the

WHUR and First Baptist Church of Glenarden pastored by Rev. John Jenkins joined forces again this year to honor and celebrate the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in presenting “Beyond the Color of Our Skin,” a two-hour town hall meeting discussing diversity and racial tolerance. The event took place Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at The First Baptist Church of Glenarden in Upper Marlboro, Md. The audience heard from youth along with local and national leaders about how they honor their heritage and celebrate the differences of others.

The Gamma Omicron Omega Graduate Chapter of Iota Phi Theta The chapter has now grown to over Fraternity held an elegant black tie gala in which the founding fathers were 40 members and continues to grow. In honored. its first year of existence, the chapter The Chapter recently celebrated its first year of existence (Dec. 9, participated in over 20 community service 2013), and its first line induction of “The Chosen 11” on June 28, activities. 2014. The main ballroom at the Forum Caterers was decorated exquisitely with the Fraternity’s colors of brown and gold with gold chairs and organza brown linen. In the Yale ballroom, the sounds of “straight ahead” jazz were performed by Guy Bragg and Sterling Silver while the Rolex Band kept the line dancers moving across the floor.
