The ROCKS hosted its 41st Annual Spring Gala Awards Banquet on April 18 at the Embassy Suites Springfield Hotel, Springfield, Va. The Rocks is a tax-exempt non-profit organization under Section 501(c)(3) comprised of ROTC and Military Academy Cadets, active duty, reserve component, commissioned officers and active duty or reserve component warrant officers and Department of Defense GS12 and above civilians. The organization was formed to provide mentorship, professional development and social interaction to strengthen the officer corps in 1974. In addition to the R.C. Cartwright Scholarship Fund, the “Leadership Outreach” program provides the opportunity for teams consisting of ROCK members to visit Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to provide professional career development guidance to ROTC students. Under the theme, “Excellence at all Levels with Transitioning in Mind,” the ROCK of the Year Award was presented to Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Byron. S. Bagby and Col. Anita Dixon with Honorary ROCK of the Year Awards was given to Gen. David Perkins and Lt. Gen. Robert L. Caslen, Jr. Closing remarks was given by Gen. The sorors of Iota Chapter, Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority celebrated their founder’s day, March 28 at the Forums Caterers. “Achieving Success through Collaboration, Advocacy and Diversity; Focus Promoting Excellence: Educators Making a Difference,” was this year’s theme. The community service awardees were Edith Bruce, Teresa Hall Cooper and Pamela Booker. Answering the essay theme, “How an Educator made a difference in my life,” Sabria Johnson a six grader at Dr. Nathan A. Pitts –Asburton Elementary Middle school, won the contest. The Iota Chapter, Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority was founded by Florence K. Williamson Norman.

The State of Maryland has officially designated Trinity AME Church a historic landmark. The dedication service was on March 29. Bishop William P. DeVeaux, the presiding prelate of the 2nd Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal church, was the guest speaker. The Rev. Frank M. Reid III , pastor of Bethel AME greeted the congregation. City Councilman, Carl Stokes spoke kind words and Thomas A. Phillip III presented a citation to the senior pastor of Trinity AME , the Rev. Rodrecus M. Johnson Sr. Lauren Schiszik spoke on behalf of the Commission of Historical and Architectural Preservation. Trinity AME church has been located on Hoffman street since 1957.

Margarita “Maggie” Anderson the founder of The Empowerment Experiment (EE), creator of Maggie’s List, as well as author of “Our Black Year,” was the guest speaker for the March 22, “2015 Trailblazing Women Award- Women Who Mean Business.” The event, set to honor new era women making a difference in today’s world, was held at The Forum Caterers, 4210 Primrose Avenue. Nostalgia was running rampant on March 28 as the members of the Patapsco River (MD) Chapter of The Links reflected on the exciting weekend of March 30-March 31, 1990 when the 42 enthusiastic ladies of the Patapsco River Chapter-Elect interest group became members of the illustrious organization, The Links. The Charter members, alumnae members, daughters of Links, husbands of Links and past presidents were recognized at the 25th Anniversary Celebration. The elegant luncheon with exquisite banquet decorations that included touches of silver on the tables, white covered chairs, a receiving line with a violinist playing harmoniously in the background while friendly chatter swelled the banquet hall with hugs and kisses as lifelong friends renewed friendships and met new ones. Honorees were Sen. Delores Kelley, 10 Legislative District, Baltimore County and Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, president, University of Maryland, Baltimore County who were both instrumental in providing resources and friendship during the infancy stages of The Patapsco River (MD) Chapter of the Links. The theme of the 25th Anniversary luncheon was “Celebrating 25 Years of Friendship and Service in Baltimore County.” Christie Ileto, WJZ TV served as emcee. Dr. A. Lois De Laine was chairperson; Geanelle Griffith Herring was vice chair of the event.

The National Collegiate Preparatory Public Charter School held its 2015 Sankofa Ball with young men and women gracing the ballroom in their formal attire, engaging in an evening of fun, singing and dancing while exercising good etiquette. According to its founder and executive director, Jennifer Ross, the goal of the school is to create life-long learners and give them the tools they need to succeed in college and beyond. Special guests included Jim Vance, NBC4 news anchor.
