TRAVEL PLAN By Plane The best way to get to Mozambique is by plane from Europe via Lisbon or Paris, to South Africa and from west or east Africa by Kenya, Namibia or Ethiopian airways since they are the cheapest to S.A with daily flights to Johannesburg. You can decide to transit from Johannesburg by plane to Maputo. There are several airports in this country but the most important of all is Maputo, the capital Maputo. The rate of cancelled flights is very high and it would be very convenient if delegates arrive in Maputo instead since that is where the conference would be held. Delegates can check out fair prices of flights from Johannesburg to Maputo online.
We are proud to announce Kenya Airways as the Official Carrier for AfroXLDS 2012, Mozambique. Kenya Airways will offer all AfroXLDS delegates special discount of 20% on market fares and on IATA published fares from participating countries where Kenya Airways offices operates respectively. The offer will be applicable to both economy and business class fares, and valid for tickets purchased directly from Kenya Airways offices. Congress Committee will create specific codes for each ticket required to facilitate identification and a transparent process. Congress Committee is responsible to send the names of delegates interested to Kenya Airways to facilitate discount offer. All you need to do is to send an e-mail with your passport scanned attached and dates of arrival and departure to CCVP Finance, Sally Prempeh (sally.kendrixs@aiesec.net) with subject “Kenya Airways Ticket_Name Surname 4 days before the date that you want
to purchase the ticket. We will in turn send to you the code that you will need to show to your country’s Kenya Airway Office to effect the 20% discount offer. Delegates should be sure of flight fares for their set departure and of their willingness to purchase ticket before sending their details to avoid any form of inconvenience since codes given would be irrevocable. By Car There is a well maintained road between Johannesburg and Maputo and it takes around 7 to 8 hours including border formalities. Other borders with Swaziland, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania are open and possible to cross with your own vehicle hence delegates from these countries can consider renting a bus which would be cheaper and more convenient since they have free entry to Mozambique. Note that you are mostly not allowed to cross borders to Mozambique with your South African rental car though there are some exceptions, it is however better to avoid it to evade any form of inconvenience that might come with it. By Bus The capital Maputo is easily reached by frequent daily buses to and from Johannesburg in South Africa, delegates from Europe, East and West Africa who land at Johannesburg airport can pick the airport train known as Gautrain which cost less than $15 to parkstation where they can get buses of all sort going from Johannesburg to Maputo, taking about 8 to 9 hours via the busy Komatipoort/Ressano Garcia border crossing. Pretoria and Nelspruit. Check Greyhound , InterCape Mainliner, Panthera Azul and Translux (google) to check and compare schedules and prices. Panthera has buses to Durban via Swaziland, originating in Maputo. Delegates should know that maximum cost to get to Maputo from Johannesburg depending on bus they decide to pick is `100usd and minimum is 45usd. The Minibuses from Johannesburg to Maputo are very cheap but not the safest anyway and that could cost roughly 350rands which is roughly 25usd. Minibuses also travel between Maputo and Manzini and Mbabane in Swaziland , taking about 3.5 hours including border formalities. From Malawi. To and from Blantyre use the Zóbuè crossing between Blantyre and Harare (Zimbabwe), where vehicles depart Blantyre from the border via Mwanza connecting in Mozambique with minibuses to Tete . The Milange border crossing is convenient for Quelimane and Island of Mozambique , with regular buses from Blantyre via Mulanje to the border. You can use the Ilala ferry which stops at Cobue Metangula weekly and an excellant way up on Lake Malawi via Likoma Island ( Malawi ). Contact Malawi Lake Services (ilala@malawi.net). Mozambique visas are Issued at Cobue. Slow sailing boats go Between Also Likoma Island, and Cobue Metangula. From Tanzania. Pickups depart Mtwara ( Tanzania ) daily at 6.30am Kilambo to the border post, and on to the Rovuma River, crossed – it could be dangerously adventurous, depending on your perspective and water levels - via dugout canoe. Once across, two pick-ups daily go to the Mozambique border post (4km further Top) and on to Mocimboa da
Praia (U.S. $ 10, four hours). The vehicle ferry ($ 50 per vehicle) at Kilambo Operates at high tide several times weekly. From Zambia , the main crossing is at Cassacatiza, northwest of Tete. Chapas(Mini busese) go daily from Tete to Matema, from where there's onward transport to the border, and vehicles to Katete (Zambia), and on to Lusaka or Chipata. From Zimbabwe, the main crossings are at Nyamapanda (which lies on the route linking Harare with Blantyre via Tete), and at Machipanda on the Harare to Beira route. Minibuses go from Tete to Changara and on to Nyamapanda, where there are vehicles to Harare. You can also travel directly via Blantyre by bus to Harare, again crossing the border with Mozambique through Tete. From Chimoio minibuses go to Manica and the border. From here, onward transport is available to Maputo . Important: Travel through the other boundaries should be risky, because of the accidents in the road. CC recommends taking a plane.
